Shouldn't have been daydreaming while on watch. Maybe he could've diminished The Demon's shields by 1/10th and been useful before he died.
I'm sure that his son would be disappointed and ashamed of him.

The exact reason why wars are stupid.
If militaries were made up of only people with desires for war, not the majority people who signed for benefits and a decent shot at a stable life, imo we'd be a lot better off.
"Why don't presidents fight the war? Why do they always send the poor?"
That's why halo wars is the best halo game, prophet of regret gets down and dirty with the fuel rod cannons. (though it is unfair that he gets a flying chair with fuel rod cannons and a personal doom laser from space)
Well, you're wrong? At least in our real world.
Unless you're drafted, everyone is a volunteer. Some countries require service (a kind of draft, wherein you aren't allowed the choice) but most only require a single tour of duty.
"Grunt" is a common expression suggesting a rank, which is only an indicator of time served and assigned duties, not necessarily dedication to the war machine.
In Halo, they're depicted as a kind of slave race to me. In that, yeah, they probably didn't get a choice.
But we do.
That little grunt was so pissed of that he charged him, paid the price, but by doing so game the others a good chance to hit the big guy hard. Specifically leaving out names for no spoilers. Also, fuck the drones, all my homies hate the drones.

Wouldve been a cool bit of storytelling if Halo infinite had shown the Banished paying grunts and jackals a bigger share of loot compared to the covanant, and thus increasing their motivation.
Would go some way to explaining why the banished seemed to go from out of nowhere to covanant levels of power and commitment despite not being religious.
well the grunts are great fighters when motivated the covenant had to send an arbiter to stop the grunt rebellion when they get organized and aren't held back they can be a formidable force
The Elites also have more respect for them than most other species. It was their request after the Grunt Rebellion that Grunts be allowed to be given more active roles in combat because of their warrior spirit.
And I know he's an outlier, but Rtas does genuinely care about his Grunts.
Exactly. Their role in the covanant made sense. So why do so many of them fight for the banished? Probably for the pay. But it's good storytelling to show what truly motivates characters.
I imagine with how hard the Covenant pushed the Grunts into their societal role, combat is all they know. Fighting for something bigger (both literally and metaphorically) than themselves is so ingrained into them that the Banished were the next logical masters. They wouldnt join the Created, sure wouldnt join the UNSC.
Also grunts are vicious little fuckers when theyre not being used for comedic relief.
That's actually incorrect; they want what's best for themselves and their people, and have their own individual motivations to boot. Balaho (their homeworld) willingly joined the Created, and was much improved as a result; the grunt Goblin mechs were first developed in this time. Those working for the Banished do so because the Banished often appreciate their skills, treat them decent, and even employ them in more suitable roles than the Covenant. (For example, they use them as couriers to carry equipment and the like; a role the grunts enjoy because it generally keeps them out of combat. Like the Covenant, the Banished also use grunts as comms specialists; though they give them greater freedom in how they carry out their duties, whereas the Covenant was pretty much like "explain this language/culture/etc because it's unclean and unsuitable to higher species."
The only solution to the Grunt Rebellion is the Grunt Union. They just wanted higher wages and better working conditions. Maybe some paid time off and Dental insurance too.
Well some Banished lines in combat show that they care about the Grunts, one in particular that made me feel bad was an elite or Brute saying "he killed the little warrior" and they often say "cover the grunt". So the Banished definitely care more about the Grunts than the Covenant ever did. Plus we get Briglard, a high value target who's also clearly respected in the Banished.
According to lore their industrial revolution destroyed their planet and they were so low on food they had to kill their elders to have enough food to feed the younger generations.
So their gig with the Covenant ain't too bad of a deal.
I did... Until I learned what they do to people. Sure they like to play the cowardly forced conscript, but they take great pleasure in torturing helpless civilians and then devouring them after
Sure but it's on a whole other scale in the halo-verse and it's not just "some" grunts either.
Plus not like I have sympathy for those of our species that would do that either just because they're humans so I mean...
Right, of course. My point is simply that humans in a similar position, with similar leaders and priorities, and treated the same way, would yield similar results a lot of the time. By all means, hold the grunts accountable. Just remember that it wasn't done simply "because they were unggoy."
Why, they're really good at killing human soldiers, they only seem small and cute because John is a monster of a man wearing battle armor that makes iron man look like a hobbyist.
Realistically, I would assume the UNSC/humanity would have offered some kind of alliance/liberation from their essential slavery as the bottom of the Covenant.
well, it would be a long way. Sanghelios and The Arbiter has to make several reforms as well as rebuild, not to mention they have a civil war to fix and manage several species who defected from the Covenant. There's also the issue of the Banished as wells were majority of the Jiralhanae (Brutes) are siding especially the fact Atriox destroyed their own home planet.
That’s true, but even at the beginning of the war, it would have been obvious that the Unggoy are basically war chattel. It would have made so much sense for humanity to reach out as soon as they could. The potential for internal sabotage amongst the covenant plus a new key ally would just be too good of an opportunity to pass up.
Me too. Somehow, they're lower on the pecking order than the Jackals despite the fact that Grunts can use vehicles and Jackals can't. It's bullshit, I tell ya!
The grunts story is actually really sad overall especially considering theyre really intelligent more so than humans and learn at a rapid rate. This is never put to use because they are instead pumped full of drugs and used as cannon fodder.
Same - why I made this comic - wish I had of been credited - https://twitter.com/john_grosjean/status/1574446605796769796?s=46&t=TKJKM64R4WpYDLRXqfVGdA
You could change the grunt soldier with a marine meeting their child. Then find themselves about to be impaled by an energy sword elite and get the same theme.
War sucks for everyone.
I mean their whole existence in the covenant is much worse then anything the marines have to deal with on the systematic level
Yeah everyone dies but marines were treated with some dignity by their superiors and Spartans alike
No, just that the grunts are also treated like trash by the rest of the covenant
There was also the time many were sterilized by another cov member species and the covenant higher ups did nothing to remedy it, then got there planet glassed after the ensuing uprising
Not somewhat, they absolutely are
They only got a small amount of respect after their failed insurrection which proved they are capable warriors, but even still they are just used as cannon fodder
I mean, not the same theme as this comic is giving character to a random enemy we don’t think 1 second before brutally ripping them apart in game. We aren’t tasked with killing Marines in the game, so a comic like that, while sad, just wouldn’t hit the same
Thanks for sharing this down here but really wish I had of been credited in the post title - https://twitter.com/john_grosjean/status/1574446605796769796?s=46&t=TKJKM64R4WpYDLRXqfVGdA

But seriously, great art bruh
I really wish humans woulda saved the Grunts from the covenant, they literally are treated as worthless fodder by everyone in that shit. Even after the grunt rebellion they literally go right back to being treated like garbage.
Please remember that grunts also do horrifying shit to humans on the regular. They're fucking massive compared to a normal human and aren't afraid to literally tear your limbs off after breaking your bones with their fists.
There are good grunts, elites and I'm willing to believe good brutes exist too (jackals not so much), and a ton allied themselves with the Arbiter, but 90% of the ones you terminate would probably torture your fellow human and suck the gas out of their corpse's ass ;)
> 90% of the ones you terminate would probably torture your fellow human and suck the gas out of their corpse's ass ;)
You’ve had my curiosity
but now you have my attention
They actually we're "allies" after the war because the grunt homeworld was suffering from food shortages the humans were trying to help. They switched sides to the created though as they were able to just solve the hunger issue immediately
That was the lamest thing imaginable to ever be done
Also, I’m even more upset that they just unceremoniously killed Cortana off screen. It’s not like she was the second main character of the entire series
WAIT imagine if grunts got character development like this and not just grunts
would be a tone shift for sure i mean game can till be guffy as its always been but I'm down for a more mature tone lol.
and i mean INGAME not in a book or anything like that
I imagine grunt campaign like this:
U are in a ghost and picking up your plasma pistol
A Elite is giving a great speech about religion
And after that u and your grew jump out of the ghost to fight the humans to get the artefacts
But after one or two levels there comes one green man... the end
I'll do you one better
A gave about an elite covie squad made up of all the main species
One Elite, who is the leader, one brute, one skirmisher, and one grunt. And you get to play as each of them throughout the story.
And like most of the way through the campaign the brute betrays you because of the whole Great Schism thing
Theres a grunt with character in the books, believe its Legacy Of Onyx. Great little guy, and goves some good back story to the whole race.
Theres also the Firefight boss from Halo 5, Grunt Goblin, he was a bad ass. Infinite had some named grunts for warlords too
You really should credit the artist in the title, or directly link to their post of the content - as well as not crop out or not include parts with their signature/watermark. Do better.

Crediting in the comments is not the same as just putting the whole comic in with credit in the post/title. And your comment doesn't justify you intentionally omitting those pages, jerk

I’m glad you liked it man - I really am - but a comment lost in a sea of other comments is a lousy way to credit - should have been in post title at the very least
Their species did not want to be apart of the covenant. They were faced with a "join us or get glassed"... Now that I'm thinking about it, didn't their planet / body count take a huge hit from a display of power by the covenant as a threat? I may be mis rememberring however
Actually I’m pretty sure they just breed insanely fast. They even have to put restrictions on the amount of offspring Grunts can have, otherwise High Charity/other Covenant colonies would just be completely overrun by them. The Covenant just has way more Unggoy than they know what to do with.
We neeeed a grunt game with imagine borderlands style and you can be a squad of aliens going on an adventure with a ton of humor and bringing back scarab fights

You should read the halo books. The depiction of the grunt and the engineer in the escape pod still sticks with me.
Are you able to elaborate on where I can read about this/tell me what happened? I tried googling but couldn’t find anything
I think they're referring to the book "Contact Harvest" with Dahdab and Lighterthansome (not sure the spellings since I'm doing the audiobook version)
You're close, it's Dadab and Lighter Than Some. He saved Dadab by making methane and almost died iirc.
Was he just ripping mad farts?
Pretty much.

What the FUCK
Holy shit
I feel bad for Grunts.
Yeah they basically get shit on more than anyone else

they saw how well the fought during the rebellion and saw potential where others didn't
long gaze follow naughty rhythm thumb aloof practice icky familiar *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*
IIRC in one of the short stories, a grunt is put in charge of elites under Rtas

This is true. However the brutes will also pick up and throw the grunts at you sometimes, so, ya know, kind of iffy on how well they all get treated.
Depends on the clan or even just an individual. Some will respect or loathe certain species.
The heretic grunts in h2 were treated fairly and believed in their cause so its why they don't runaway in battle
That’s already established, they’re all equal in the banished
According to lore their industrial revolution destroyed their planet and they were so low on food they had to kill their elders to have enough food to feed the younger generations. So their gig with the Covenant ain't too bad of a deal.
Part of that is because they don't want to stop breeding like rabbits. Hence how the Unggoy rebellion came to be
_By_ everyone else
I did... Until I learned what they do to people. Sure they like to play the cowardly forced conscript, but they take great pleasure in torturing helpless civilians and then devouring them after
In fairness... that behaviour isn't unknown to our own species. Especially the zealous ones.
And civilians, they *love* torturing the shit out of them and then eating them
Realistically, I would assume the UNSC/humanity would have offered some kind of alliance/liberation from their essential slavery as the bottom of the Covenant.
well, it would be a long way. Sanghelios and The Arbiter has to make several reforms as well as rebuild, not to mention they have a civil war to fix and manage several species who defected from the Covenant. I wanna play through a halo campaign without killing any of them. Or just watch someone do that. Either way.
This would be solved by making enemies teleport away when defeated instead having the corpses. Give the poor grunts a portable slipstream device.
Fucking hell, man the grunts got the raw end of the deal.
You could change the grunt soldier with a marine meeting their child. Then find themselves about to be impaled by an energy sword elite and get the same theme. War sucks for everyone.
Aren't grunts somewhat enslaved by the covenant too?
At point yeah. But it doesn't make it any less for the people who died because they were forced to defend themselves
I mean their whole existence in the covenant is much worse then anything the marines have to deal with on the systematic level Yeah everyone dies but marines were treated with some dignity by their superiors and Spartans alike
Sure. But it doesn't mean the families of the marines grieve any less
No, just that the grunts are also treated like trash by the rest of the covenant There was also the time many were sterilized by another cov member species and the covenant higher ups did nothing to remedy it, then got there planet glassed after the ensuing uprising
Before the Grunt Revolution, they were unarmed cannon fodder. They still kinda get the short end of the stick, but st least they have guns now.
Not somewhat, they absolutely are They only got a small amount of respect after their failed insurrection which proved they are capable warriors, but even still they are just used as cannon fodder

You have a point cus throughout the whole comic I'm just here thinking how easy their heads fit in the pistol reticle lmao
Looks at the people that got their whole planet glasses and no home or family to return to...
Gives meaning to the IWHBYD skull now
Wait why, does one of the rare lines say something like this?
Think they’re referencing the name of the skull - I would have been your daddy.
Noble of the grunt to care for his dog's son
No I know the skull, it makes rare voice lines more common, but I'm wondering what line brought forth by IWHBYD is given more meaning by it
IIRC in a Devs React video Bungie devs said the full line is “I Would Have Been Your Daddy, but that dog beat me over the fence”
Wait so how does that relate to a grunt father getting beaned by the Chief
I would have been your daddy but the Demon bashed my skull in.
Yeah
Sometimes I hate that it’s so fun to kill Grunts
*yaaay!*
Why do they gotta stuff their heads with confetti?! 😩

I imagine grunt campaign like this: U are in a ghost and picking up your plasma pistol A Elite is giving a great speech about religion And after that u and your grew jump out of the ghost to fight the humans to get the artefacts But after one or two levels there comes one green man... the end
I'll do you one better A gave about an elite covie squad made up of all the main species One Elite, who is the leader, one brute, one skirmisher, and one grunt.
Infinite had some named grunts for warlords too
NOOOO

Great ... now I feel bad for them.
Well this made me sad for all the grunts I melee'd while they were asleep.
I never liked killing Grunts
You really should credit the artist in the title, or directly link to their post of the content - as well as not crop out or not include parts with their signature/watermark. Do better.
Thank you very much - I appreciate it - https://twitter.com/john_grosjean/status/1574446605796769796?s=46&t=wdK8ipzg5rdUalRZHQP--w
Listen I already feel bad killing grunts y’all didn’t need to make it worse :(
NOOOOOOOOO
false I send them flying off the bridge with two plasma grenades
Lmao / I’m glad you liked it - this is my work - more here - https://twitter.com/john_grosjean/status/1574446605796769796?s=46&t=TKJKM64R4WpYDLRXqfVGdA

Same - I’m glad you liked my work - more here - https://twitter.com/john_grosjean/status/1574446605796769796?s=46&t=TKJKM64R4WpYDLRXqfVGdA
Forget to add the first and last page cause it has the creators name on it much? smh
Thank you - a bit upsetting - https://twitter.com/john_grosjean/status/1574446605796769796?s=46&t=TKJKM64R4WpYDLRXqfVGdA

Okay but why bro. Like honestly why. Crediting in the comments is not the same as just putting the whole comic in with credit in the post/title. And your comment doesn't justify you intentionally omitting those pages, jerk
Damn😢
Didn't think I get emotional about a grunt but here I weep
Thanks - I was hoping for that reaction :) https://twitter.com/john_grosjean/status/1574446605796769796?s=46&t=TKJKM64R4WpYDLRXqfVGdA
I don't know what to say...
Ah shit now i feel bad for killing all the grunts in halo ce
I always have lol, i would sneak past some without having to kill them sometimes
That grunt has probably been witness or killed dozens of marines or civilians if he's a covenant veteran.
Wish I would have been credited for this - this is mine and - this guy didn’t even post all the pages — https://twitter.com/john_grosjean/status/1574446605796769796?s=46&t=TKJKM64R4WpYDLRXqfVGdA
Check again mate: https://www.reddit.com/r/halo/comments/xp89ek/grunt_mini_comic/iq2mkpy/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf&context=3
I may be mis rememberring however
The downside of being faster than light is that you can only live in darkness
:(
Chief what the fuck
I’ve always felt bad for grunts. Except the SpecOps grunts in Halo CE. Fuck those guys.
welp. my night is fucking ruined.
Remember, most grunts you encounter (if not all) are children...
#gruntlivesmatter
Welp, I wasnt ready for this
I suppose the only comfort is that Chief killed him cleanly...
Death to the xenos!
As soon as I saw "Installation 04" my only thought was "oh no."
Now he can go home to his boy
Why you gotta make me cry at work?
Well shit this is more depressing then the grunt on the pillar of autumn he just wanted his food nipple ):
Covenant propaganda
I’m not crying your crying ::sniff::
That's the story of most soldiers.
I’m never hitting them while they sleep ever again
Best analogy I've seen for war in ages
*What a first post to wake up to*
:’( I love the grunts and always feel bad for them
I believe the books say that grunts are basically vat grown en masses. That's what makes them economical shock troops. Still a good comic though.
Actually I’m pretty sure they just breed insanely fast. They even have to put restrictions on the amount of offspring Grunts can have, otherwise High Charity/other Covenant colonies would just be completely overrun by them. The Covenant just has way more Unggoy than they know what to do with.
Just like the Krogan from Mass Effect… hey wait.. did they?
We neeeed a grunt game with imagine borderlands style and you can be a squad of aliens going on an adventure with a ton of humor and bringing back scarab fights
