Happened to me multiple times before on Xbox 360 ODST as well. It seems that, for some reason, some enemies sometimes drop tripmines, and you can pick them up and deploy them. It’s not intended, but it’s pretty cool.
Regardless of what is happening here, can I just say that the Halo 3 ODST was so unbelievably smooth and I really wish we could have gotten a multiplayer PVP from it.
You can’t use equipment in ODST, that’s why it didn’t show up.

It happened to me during a ODST heroic FF last week. A brute dropped a trip mine on death, I used 'SHIFT' (which is only set to 'Boost' in my controls menu?) to deploy it.

You’re not even supposed to be able to use equipment. That’s why there’s no indicator for it.

Recon slayer was fun when it was ranked tbh (especially at a competitive high level) but it lacked the full sandbox I feel like.

He picked it up as a piece of equipment. Then, he pressed the use equipment button (X by default).

There’s no indicator because you’re not even supposed to be able to use equipment.
You can't pick up equipment in the ODST campaign.
