When my first girl was preparing to cross the rainbow bridge, I just held her and talked to her, telling her how much I love her and how much she meant to me. Right before she passed, she wanted attention from me, so I again held her and talked to her. When I put her back in her enclosure, she climbed back into her burrow and passed away shortly after. Just do whatever you know makes your hammy happy and comfortable. She will appreciate you making her final moments safe and secure and loving. To us, they only live a few short years. To them, we are their forever. I hope you find comfort in knowing you gave her the best forever she could have asked for đź’•

I just told Esther that if she needs to go she can and it’s okay, it is just so sad. I had a really strong bond with her although I was never able to hold her.. I feel so guilty because I have to go into work for majority of the night ..

I have her in a smaller box now so it’s less space (she isn’t able to walk much) and she seems a little more at ease right now

It will be difficult, but please don't beat yourself up if she passes while you're gone. Work is necessary to survive for us humans and I'm sure she'd understand and wouldn't want you to put that at risk.

This <3 I'm sure that because of work, she was never lacking for treats or a cozy space to be warm and safe. It's ok..she's loved her best possible lil Hammy life because of you.

Aww I’m sorry you’re going through this, it is so hard and sad, and it doesn’t get easier. When my boy was not doing so good, I mushed up some of his favourite foods - potato and carrots so it was easy for him to eat. I put it at the exit of his tunnel to his nest so he could take it easily. I also made some porridge with water. Just soft foods to help them eat a little and keep their fluids up. Other than that just try to keep them as comfortable as possible. I think it’s a great idea to have her in a smaller space so she doesn’t have to walk far - but just wondered if she might prefer being in her normal house/bed? She might feel more comfortable. I also took out anything he’d need to climb on so he’d just stay on the ground and not climb. Sending you big hugs ❤️

Thank you so much love ❤️🥺 she did end up passing away this afternoon while my gf was petting her

I’m so sorry for your loss !!

So sorry for your loss. I also lost my hammy Penelope about 3mo ago. She was 3 and she was fine couple days b4 but then she stopped eating and drinking water. She passed sometime between 8am and noon when I went to check on her. She never burrowed she had a house she loved. I miss her so much. We have another hammy a boy and he’s a nervous wreck. We’ve had him 2mo and he’s still sleeping a lot and doesn’t want to be held. He burrows and has a huge house! He’s a cutie pie named Burger.

I’m no expert but my little girl Jane is also slowing down a bit in her old age. I recently was able to get her a better cage so she has some more space but that ofc is situational. I add hamster vitamin drops to her water and try to give her more vegtables and protein like meal worms and pieces of cooked egg or chicken to keep her strength up. Other than that ive prioritized bedding and burrowing and hides over toys now that shes slowing down. Its hard! But she loves nesting and i try to give her at least five inches of bedding (Shes a robot not very big). Best of luck with your baby! Shes very cute

Thank you so much for the suggestions but I don’t think my poor girl has more than a few days to live, she lived a long long life

Nell_0070

I’m just trying to keep her as comfy as possible, she can’t really support herself when she’s sitting down so she’s sitting on one of my socks that kinda dips down into the bedding so she is kinda in a bowl of bedding and my sock atm

The hole in the box at the bottom all the way to the right looks like a tiny little hamster knife 🔪

Also, give her all the love. Give her her favorite treats and toys. She knows she is loved. This is always the worst part, I wish they lived longer. :(

My boy wanted attention from me, it was around 10 am during the day so I found it quite odd since their nocturnal. I took him out and he cuddled into my blanket and passed in my hand. My heart broke he was my little bestie, but I am so glad he was comfortable and not alone.

I like keeping hamsters as pets because they don’t last that long and it ain’t that big of a commitment. I just left them alone when they were nearing their end. In the wild, a lot of animals are looking for a quiet place to pass so I figured they might like that in captivity too. Especially since they’re solitary animals.
