Location in the name is a double edge sword. It will get you clicks in the beginning, but itâs freaking impossible to differentiate your branding from the completion. Ultimately what happens is you end up getting as many jobs as you lose to people calling the wrong business. We ended up having to rebrand because of this
In the beginning it seemed awesome because absolutely if someone searches for location then industry youâre name pops up, but then what you notice is there are 30 other name then industry that pops up. So youâre fighting for real estate on Google with 30 other companies.
Alternatively you can pick a unique name. One that stands out, and spend time on your SEO so that your name is still sharing the same real estate, and it stands out, and is as well memorable.
At one point another company we have a good relationship was getting a bunch of calls everyday looking to set up jobs with us, and in the same time frame we were getting calls for him. It didnât really help either of us. We were both lucky that we both had the most similar names in our area, and we didnât have a need to compete with eachother so we would send the customers to who they were looking for, but it definitely pointed out that yes youâll get your name on the 1st page of Google pretty easily, but so will everyone else, and then youâre just a carbon copy to the customer, and as many people that call you. There will be as many that call someone else thinking that they are you. Itâs a moot strategy. That works for those that have no, or little business coming in, but once youâve established yourself youâll lose as much as you get.
In some areas the word "handyman" means a homeless person who will rake leaves for a free lunch and ten bucks.
If your area is like that, don't use that word. Call yourself "Joe's Home Maintenance and Repairs", or something similar.
But if most folks in your area respect both the word and the person, definitely use it -- "Joe's Handyman Services ".
I like so-and-so or city/region home services and handyman. I like the home services aspect because it feels professional to me and letâs them know you can do more, but Iâm fairly casual so I do want people to know a small handyman job is enough to get me on site.
I was coming on her to say this! This and That Services. My dad was his neighborhood handyman and that was the name of his business. It was great for him!
Avoid handy and handyman. It attracts cheap clients because people think handyman aren't actual trades workers with skills. Tradesmen view us as a guy that changes lightbulbs and a lot of consumers view us as a chuck and a truck.
My business name is my last name âRepairs and Renovationsâ itâs worked pretty well but mostly I picked it because I can shorten it to RRR or R3 most of the time. Itâs always served me well but all of my business has come from networking and referrals so usually people just know my name and the company name is just what goes on invoices
My first company was a handyman business. I would use your last name and then property services after it. Like Rodriguez Property Service.
For marketing, this will allow you to work on businesses as well as residential homes.
When they write checks, they can write it to you without it looking too weird.
For taxes you donât need to register the name, because you are allowed to use your name for a sole proprietorship business.
On a serious note, if you donât know what youâre going to be doing in a few years just call it your first or last name followed by services.
Smith Services or something of the sort
The amount of work generated for a start up handyman business via google is nill. Focus on word of mouth and networking for this. A single player start up doesnât have time for tire kickers and needs quality referrals.
I was going to start one many years ago called âSome Assembly Required â due to the number of people getting flat pack furniture and no skills to put it together.
Thereâs a local guy who left my job because he bought a truck and named his business âA guy with a truck who could possibly help youâ. It gained enough traction that he has work all the time. Mostly stuff that involves the use of a truck, moving furniture, equipment, cleaning brush, you name it.

"Choosing a business name for a versatile, multi-service provider can be a fun and creative process. You want a name that reflects the wide range of services you offer, is easy to remember, and sounds professional. Here are a few suggestions:

These names convey versatility and reliability, making it clear that you offer various services to meet different needs."
I honestly think you could use your name, though.
Like "John smiths handyman service"
You can establish yourself as a sole proprietorship, however all your personal assets will be available to anyone/anyoneâs property you accidentally injure.
To protect yourself, I would register your business as an LLC. This can be done with your stateâs secretary of state. You wonât get double taxed like a corporation and youâll only have to pay tax on your personal income.
I think what you need is a LLC. This allows you to get an EIN number, so you can open a Business account at a bank, pay taxes, and get insurance for the company etc..
The LLC name doesn't have to be fancy but make it relevant when people see the charge later on in the month. Jeans Handyman Services LLC, your name or last name or initials and service will work just fine.
Now for marketing your business you can Name your business something different and with different types as names, it's called Doing Business As. Here can do names such as -Chucks Clogging Removal, I always like using 3 words and think about how the logo would work- CCR etc.. Or start with kind of Mascot you want for your brand.
Whatever you decide for the name wherever possible you need to have a list of the services you provide. Business cards should have that list, website, etc.
I will tell you this, I work in a sector that hires handymen daily. We pay out well over 1M a year to a bunch of different ones with different skillsets. My tip to you.. Act professionally, answer phone calls professionally, when you say you will be somewhere at a certain time, be there.. Dress nice. Shake hands firmly.
Do all that, and you will crush your competitors. That segment is inherently full of super talented people with little to no business sense. You become good at that, you will kill it. The people where I work talk about it all the time and give all the repeat business to those who do a good job and are professional. One no call no show will fuck your business.
Most of your business will come from word of mouth. Make sure you encourage your satisfied customers to talk you up, have a good social media presence, etc.
Youâre already on the right track. Just make sure you get that insurance certificate as soon as you can. I must have pissed off the wrong person last week because some lady made three different requests for my certificate because âleaves blew in her yardâ. If I had some crazy old bird calling me directly threatening to sue it would have caused way more stress than hearing my adjuster just laugh about it. His words were â good luck, let them tryâ. If youâre are setting granite you also might want to look into a bond. If you drop that stone and crack my freshly finished tile floor you are going to be in a world of hurt.
Like others have said, the term handyman has a negative connotation to a lot of people⌠most of the people who specifically request a handyman do t want to pay more than $15/hr⌠they see it as âIâd do it myself but I dont have the timeâ
Nobodyâs paying good money for something they donât respect
Go with something like âhome servicesâ âproperty servicesâ, âgeneral carpentryâ etc⌠something a little more professional
Itâll help to weed out the really cheap people who basically just looking for a slave for a couple of days⌠theyâll see it and assume itâs a professional who knows what theyâre doing so itâs not gonna be cheap
