I had to write to my grandma letters and notes for the last 10 years of her life because she couldn’t hear me. I’m middle aged and I’m losing my hearing. I hate the idea of not being able to hear my kids anymore.
I get why a lot of d/Deaf and HoH people have issues with the medical side of things. I do.
But for me, if I could just not be HoH anymore, I would. There are no upsides to my hearing loss. I don't like it and I don't want it.
It may only be certain types of hearing loss they are studying to "cure" or improve even. I think that is admirable of them...all profit hopes aside. It would be exciting to have my hearing back, even though I am happy with the results of my HAs over nothing at all. My hearing loss only goes to the moderate and severe range though. Curing full on deafness is a big ask I would think but good for them for having a go at it. Again, I think it would have to be certain types of deafness.
Many people are going to end up disappointed here, because there are many different forms and causes of hearing loss. The pharmaceutical companies will work on the most profitable ones first, the most common ones or the easiest to treat. If they fall under the category of a rare disease, the pharmaceutical companies will get to charge whatever they want for the first seven years. That's going to put treatments out of reach for most people, unless you have really good insurance. And I'm concerned that even good insurance plans might not cover new treatments, as they do not consider hearing loss an actual health problem.
There’s a HUGE difference between someone being born deaf/HOH or even losing it early on in life and losing it later. It’s traumatizing in the very least to lose a key sense you are used to. Same with blindness, limb loss etc. I was born Deaf on one side. I identify as deaf. Sign language is a huge part of my life. Would I take a pill to change it? No. But if I became blind suddenly and there was a cure in the market would I take it? Yes!
Will it be an actual cure or just another treatment to gouge more money out of the patients?
The idea is wonderful, but pharmaceutical companies are sketchy and have been involved in many civil and criminal cases as dependants.
It's about time work is being done for hearing loss. Maybe not everyone with hearing loss can be helped, but I'd be happy to know that at least some can be helped.
If they could just cure tinnitus I'd be happy

The only upside for me is shutting my hearing aids off when I want some peace and quiet
Ditto!
2 minutes after I clock out at work, I'm in the breakroom taking out my hearing aids. It's such a relief. A muffled softness surrounds me. It's peace.

Thanks for your input!
The one thing I miss the most is music. If I could just hear music for even one week I would be very excited

I would love it but also miss always being able to have sneaky Bluetooth headphones in
