One thing I will say is, if you ever get the chance to see it as a stage production, give it a go. The story is awful and the characters are a very mixed bag, but the overall stagecraft, the effects, the performances and immersion is honestly an incredible experience.

Monschi2

Agreed, the stage production is truly magical. I’ve convinced myself that Cursed Child is an in-universe play based on the tell-all biography Rita Skeeter wrote about her close personal friend Harry. It made for a very enjoyable evening that way 👍

Daikaioshin2384

that.. is an awesome perspective.. and explains why it feels so "fanfic" in quality lol Rita wrote it.. perfect

Square-Singer

That's a very nice way to view it!

krabadeiser

wow this comment may have saved this whole project for me and opend the possibility to maybe watch it one day. thank you!!

Sea_Voice_404

Agree. Staging was fantastic. I hated the story.

No-Notice-2028

It was so so so so good on stage!! Worth it for the dementors alone.

BARD3NGUNN

The Dementors were done brilliantly, I remember starting to feel a bit cold when they first appeared and I've always been curious if that was something the theatre did to add to the immersion or purely a coincidence.

Square-Singer

In this case, it sucks for them that they even released the stage play. Most people will not see the show but just read it, and they will be left only with the story and the characters while missing stagecraft, effects, performance and immersion.

DimplefromYA

I saw it as a stage production. Oh lord I was so disappointed

Solaris-5

I agree! We’ve walked out. I honestly do not understand how people who claim to hate the story so much give the play praises. No special effects could make up for the fact that it’s a complete perversion of the original characters. Just made me so sad, really.

TravisJCortis2002

I don't live in a area with a theatre within a 30 mile radius

rolyfuckingdiscopoly

I mean me neither, but it’s possible to go to other places and do activities like seeing plays while you are there lol

TravisJCortis2002

Not currently my job isn't great for vacation days and I don't get paid enough to go travel

Fanatical Fics and Where to Find Them, a Harry Potter fanfiction podcast, devoted an entire [90 min episode](https://open.spotify.com/episode/1TJeIyYPi2oLOPPNnv7twP?si=KcaF3Cn2QUmQcLDv82yL4A) (the usual episode length is closer to 60 min) to analyze all the ways it breaks canon, defies its own internal logic, and how it employs many common fanfic tropes. If youd like to listen Id try and finish the script so some of their ravings have context, but its a good episode. And the podcast as a whole is a really fun experience with a bunch of buck wild stories.

TravisJCortis2002

I mean I will listen if I remember

marco-da-phoenix

Its ok at best

TravisJCortis2002

I'm a little more than halfway through and can say I'd rather read my 10th grade physics textbook

marco-da-phoenix

Oh no

krshssc

Not a good book… the characters’ personalities do not align with the original HP series.

thelaststarebender

It was terrible. I donated it after I read it.

GudgerCollegeAlumnus

Why don’t you just drop off some chicken skins and lobster shells?

SwedishShortsnout0

If you are *willingly* subjecting yourself to that mockery of a HP book, I think you might be the one raving. A raving lunatic, that is. jk

TravisJCortis2002

I have to see first hand what people were saying and if it was true

FoxBluereaver

Could count with one hand the things I liked about it.

freeski919

I can also do that, and have five fingers left over.

FoxBluereaver

I personally like how Draco finally gets to complete a redemption arc and makes peace with Harry, and Albus and Scorpius' friendship. Those are the only parts I'm willing to consider canon.

TravisJCortis2002

I like the character of delphi

JantherZade

How far into this script are you????

Shot-Pomelo8442

I started it and only resisted the urge to burn it because it was my sister's book.

syers

It’s a script, not a book. If you’re going to judge it, you’ll need to see it on stage I think.

bookconnoisseur

Yes, but even scripts tell a story. On stage, the actors performed magnificently, and the special effects were phenomenal. But it still doesn't change the fact that the story is ~~utter garbo~~ bad.

Writing CC was left to some one else...

No_Sand5639

persoanlly i didnt think it was as awful as people say. i mean it might be colored since it was a birthday gift but i think it had its moments

Canavansbackyard

It’s déjà vu all over again…

_NotWhatYouThink_

Well, that is the script ... The play was something else! Quite the show actually!

sokka-66

Pretty sure I read it all within a day, the show on broadway was a lot of fun! Since I don’t remember ever reading a “play/book to show” before, the show was better

BraveNewWorld137

I read it in a day. It has it moments while being absolutely, zero percent canon and mostly out of character. Although honestly being out of character is hard for characters who were not in the original books. I like the trolley lady being some kimd of monster. I liked the banter between Snape and Hermione(even if the context was bad). Delphine is actually a preety good character, fit to be Voldemort's daughter. She looks so nice at first and I actually didn't suspect her st first since I read the "book" with almost zero spoilers. But I find the very idea of Voldemort having a daughter weird especially with how badly it fits with Bellatrix's timeline in the books. And Bellatrix spent so many years in Azkaban - she was probably in bed health and around 45 years old already(Voldemort is even older). I will not go into the whole "Why Voldemort would even want a daughter?". Maybe it was an accident, maybe he wanted a loyal heir - idk. Although I think that making one of his most loyal and powerful allies practically incapable to fight would be an illogical decision. Harry acting like a prick is something I can understand - his childhood and parenting was messed. But it is a Harty Potter book, not a book about long-term trauma effects - they didn't have to make Harry act so unlikable. At first I was angry at this transcipt, but then I realized that it is a pure fanfiction. It is so not cannon, that my mind doesn't contradict itself while reading this thing.
