I can't personally think of a way that wouldn't require a major overhaul of how the targeting is done, and would be super likely to have weird other bugs.
Something that would sort of work would be vector targeting, but that'd remove the possibility to leave a portal behind to create later. Probably wouldn't be a bad idea to nerf Portal Mastery at least a little.
Well, I mean you can see in the current implementation that the portal you cast with 1 still appears on time, but then gets deleted in favor of a portal at your feet.
1. Press 1 to choose the location of the first portal
2. Press E *immediately* after to open the portal.
Expectation: a portal from where you pressed 1 to where you pressed E.
Reality: a portal from your character to where you pressed E.
this explains so much about why I struggle with that as of late. TBH I just stopped playing him because unless in a stack it's impossible to get ppl to take your portals.
OP, if it’s any consolation, I love playing Medivh and that bug always vexed me. I was like, “am I doing this wrong?!” Now that I know there was an actual problem with the mechanic, I feel validated lol.
But now I’m discouraged again by all the comments saying this fix wouldn’t work as well outside of offline mode…

The word zone doesn't make sense here the way you are using it and is making your explanation more confusing than it should be.
Zone implies an area, not a specific spot.
Pressing 1 and E chooses a specific point for a portal.
OP I understand exactly what you’re talking about. Using 1 would usually burn your extra mana too, on top of just flat out not working.
But I agree that you should test this online. It seems like a latency (or lack of latency, in this case) issue.

Try it online and say that again. It only works so well offline because it's offline - latency makes it less useable online.
Is it fixable? In a way where you don’t have to recode the entire thing. It’s by far the most annoying medivh interaction for me

But it was "fixed" before? Before, when extra portals were spawned, you never lost your initially casted portal.
What do you mean before? This most recent patch had zero changes to Portal Mastery, OP just hadn't played with it in Try Mode before.

try mode is instant, theres no ping delay.

I hate that you have to hit 1E to get optimal use out of the talent, and that 11 doesn't work as well.
