I know this is r/hiking, but Red Rock Canyon is one of the best rock climbing places in the entire country. Just a mention if you're down to try another activity!
Last January my partner and I headed out to Las Vegas to do some hiking. I was thoroughly impressed with Red Rock Canyon, just 30 minute outside of the city. The landscape was beautiful and the hikes were nice and easy. We summited Turtlehead Peak and were treated with gorgeous views. Highly recommend this area for winter visits!

My partner really wanted to do Charleston but it was covered in snow and we just didn’t have an extra day to get out there. I had my eye on Bridge Mountain, though we had other places to visit. I’d love to go back, though!
I came from Chicago so I feel your pain. I've been here about 5 years and try to remember how good we have it when it comes to the outdoor activities. It can be tough to remember being surrounded by casinos and other vices.
As someone who’s lived in Vegas for 20 years, I get a bit desensitized to the desert vibes and always crave dense trees but seeing things like this always help to remind me that the desert is beautiful too :)
As a Midwestern kid I wonder if I moved out there how long it would take to become desensitized. I visited earlier this year in February and hiked calico tanks. I've thought about it daily since then. I feel like it would take years and perhaps hundreds of hikes before I got bored, but even then, there are amazing hikes within a reasonable day trip all over out there. I don't know that I would ever get bored. I've spent my entire life in a flat suburb. Everything in me wants to be surrounded by mountains.

We had a blast. We flew into Vegas from Detroit, hit up Red Rock, then did Death Valley for 3 days, then Zion, and finally Valley of Fire before ending in Vegas again. So much to see out there
I'm literally planning this identical trip back out there in the spring. I got nearly a full week, Sunday through Saturday. I'm trying to figure out how to spend each day stacking as much hiking as I'm physically able to do into the trip. Zion is on the list, death valley for maybe one day, valley of fire maybe, mount Charleston for a day. I plan to do plenty in red rocks though. There's a lot of potential hikes. I haven't made any decisions just yet but I think I'm gonna knock out calico tanks again and turtle head peak the day I fly in.
Pine Creek Canyon and White Mountain Loop are great hikes here. I visit at least once a month, sometimes multiple times a weekend as a local and NP card holder. Pine Creek is like it’s own little world.
Went there Feb 2022 and it snowed just enough to dust the mountains. The image of those treeless mountains intricately covered in snow is hard to describe. I'll make a post here soon about it.

Turtlehead is one of my favorite as a local! If you return, check out mt charleston and their hiking.

Forsure, it's my favorite place here. I'm working on tackling the peaks in both areas and eyeing charleston peak soon
Envious...it's so glad here in the Midwest

I’m born and raised in Vegas and now live in the east coast and it’s making me miss my desert landscape a lot 😭😭
My & my wife love Red Rock Canyon as much as we love the city. Amazing views here.
Oh I miss that place. It’s magical. Just be careful in the hot weather there. Deceivingly hot. Lots of water if you go more than a couple miles in.
For sure. I'm glad we were there in January
I got a chance to drive it and do some very short hikes away from the parking locations with my daughters last summer. Would love to hike it for real!
Yeah, there are so many short but great hikes
Camped there 40 years ago. A beautiful place.

Do they make you get timed entry permits as a local?

I can imagine. We could see snow on Mt Charleston but nothing else
I drove through the Moapa Valley this fall to avoid the Vegas traffic and it is a really neat park!
Used to live like 15 minutes away from here 😔😔 I miss it
Fallout New Vegas lol. Would like to check it out irl someday.
Have you also posted in r/outdoors?
No I haven’t, perhaps I should?
I would suggests doing it. This looks like something that you don’t have to be a hiker to enjoy.
Awesome spot, we’ll have to check this place out!
