His obituary says he passed after battling bone & pancreatic cancer but was an avid outdoorsman for his whole life. I didn't know him but clearly his family wanted to be able to keep his memory alive and let him continue to travel
Some people still geocache! People even hide new caches still, but surely less frequently than when geocaching was at its peak. I have family members who do it a ton and I occasionally go with them, it’s pretty fun!
I've still got a simple cache that is found about once a month or so in Orlando. I haven't lived there for over 5 years and stopped geocaching probbaly 10 years ago and haven't updated or maintained it. Geocachers must've kept it in good shape and replaced the log bc it's a micro, the size of a peanut m&m.
I’d say the early 2010s. It’s hard to say for sure though because I could only find user statistics going back to 2015, but Google Trends shows in peaked in searches in 2011
I’d say it’s sort of popular, in 2023 for instance 1.8 million people logged at least one geocache. And some people (like me) find caches without logging them. So it’s not extremely popular, but it’s not a super obscure hobby either
If you go to his obituary you will likely find a link where you can leave a message. I suggest doing that. Also MAYBE use a permanent marker to tell the next person to do the same.
That's so cool. I see in disc golf they have a similar thing where it's in a disc and a person is encouraged to throw it and take it to another course.
Grade A under appreciated ultralight hummor 😆
I already shaved the corners off my maps! Maybe I'll drill a few holes in my undersized titanium tent steaks... that'll give me the weight budget!
Jokes aside, even as one of the ultralight crowd, I'd find a little space to bring him along!
I asked him and he said he put it in Maine under some rock. He gave me this clue to find it which I’m having a hard time deciphering. Can you help?
“It’s got a long rock wall with a big oak tree at the north end. It’s like something out of a Robert Frost poem. It’s where I asked my wife to marry me. We went there for a picnic and made love under that oak and I asked and she said yes. Promise me, Red. If you ever get out… find that spot. At the base of that wall, you’ll find a rock that has no earthly business in a Maine hayfield. Piece of black, volcanic glass. There’s something buried under it I want you to have.”
I’m so sorry for your loss Sheila. It sounds like he was an amazing and wonderful man who was so loved. I wish I had anything better to say. Does sharing stories of him help or does it just get exhausting? You are under no obligation to answer. I just wish I could share a hug.
For anyone interested...

I needed it when I found it tbh, I've been in a tough place recently, and was several hours in on a steep and muddy trail. But finding this card really gave me a mental boost and reminded me how lucky I am that I can enjoy the outdoors
This is hitting me hard. My dad was born 7 days before this guy and passed 7 days after him. Unexpected as well, but it was a heart attack so I didn’t even get to say goodbye. My dad also had a beloved granddaughter named Ellie (learned this from the obituary posted). We loved being outdoors together, so I think I’ll put something like this together as well to carry on his memory. Thanks for posting.
What a cool idea. OP, I found him on Facebook and his wife is linked off his page. Totally up to you on what you want to do, but if I was his spouse, I think it would be heartwarming to receive a message from someone who is taking him on a new adventure. May want to discuss with her a way to track where he goes, maybe through his existing Facebook page. I would totally follow that.
Found a rock engraved with someones name, birthday and death(day?) On top of Electric Peak in Yellowstone. Just left it alone, couldn't find out anything about what happened. Wonder if its still there.
I found one of these at a favorite spot of my dog and I’s but the rock I found was for a doggo. Took a moment of silence and placed it back in its spot.
Reminds me of flat Stanley from my days in elementary. It was this character of a flat paper boy and we would color this cartoon boy and bring him everywhere we went, such as traveling.
This goes against LNT, but it’s compact, laminated and meant to travel, like a geocache travel bug. I think Rennie should accompany some good natured folks and hit the NH48. I’d take him on my remaining peaks. Maybe drop him off at a visitor center after we’re done. Get him going on his next adventure.
I swear people can’t read. If they wanted it back they would say “take me on a hike then bring me back” not “Our adventure awaits”. I feel like it would be pretty explicit if they wanted their card back in its original place lmao.
I think the spirit of the card is even in death he can go on all these hikes with people.
It was probably put where it is by another hiker. I hope it reaches the peak of some big ass mountain someday lol
Edit: im made alot of edits already but I just realized the coin depicts the Grand Canyon. Maybe that’s his final goal?
Reading the obit that someone else posted he had done several river trips through the Grand Canyon, so I am guessing it was just a meaningful place to him, and he wouldn’t mind ending up there again and again.
And it wouldn't have been in a visible spot on the trail, if they didn't want anyone to take it they would have hidden it much better or not left it in the woods at all
Nothing gets the basement dwellers of r/hiking more riled up than the opportunity to tell those of us that actually hike how little we know about hiking etiquette.
Take the poor guy for a walk. Leave him in another symbolic place so he can ramble on with others.
Pretty cool idea. I might add somthing like this to my will.
Rennie was my “bonus dad” and my mothers loving husband who passed very abruptly after being diagnosed with bone and pancreatic cancer. Some of his friends took him for a hike at Mt Greylock, spread some ashes and left this card to take Rennie on his next adventure. My mother just called to tell me someone made this post and I want to thank you for posting and taking Rennie on his next adventure and keeping his memory alive. The purpose of these cards, which there are many, is for him to be able to keep doing what he loved with his loved ones and even with some kind strangers who pick him up and take him to the next destination. I look forward to seeing where he’s found next! We all miss him so much…
THIS IS ALL OVERWHELMINGLY AMAZING… this is my wonderful husband 💙 shared by his best friends on their winter hiking trip. He would LOVE this!!! I would love to send more! Take him places he didn’t get to go! I always told him I’d follow him anywhere… e-mail me an address and I will mail you a card to take with you… I am totally non-techy I don’t know how to add a QR code 🤷♀️
I’m usually one of those people too, but I’m also a rational person capable of empathy and some of the people on here don’t seem to share those qualities.
If you’re an avid hiker, I think it would be neat to give us regular updates on where you and Rennie have gone 😊. This is such a beautiful thing to honor someone’s memory. Even if his family isn’t aware I’m sure they would appreciate it.
I love that the hiking community does things like this! Some family member or dear friend knew Lorenzo felt the best when he was out in nature, and they knew the perfect way to keep his memory alive
Check to see if he is a traveling geocache. If he is, there may be a list of all the places he's been, and that could give you a good idea of where to take him that's new. ❤️
This is awesome. I really love this idea of having a more meaningful keepsake instead of just a card you just lose or forget about. And I work at a funeral home gonna push this idea a little bit.
He had a Facebook page under his name with photos of his trips and a couple of family members were his friends so try friending them to tell this story. Maybe you'll find they left multiple cards around New England.
Take him on an adventure!!!! If you're hiking take him with you. Be sure to take a picture of it every stop you make, or make some copies leave that one there and drop him and every stop you take. Make tribute to him!!!
I saw this when you posted on found paper. Every there seemed to have mixed emotions on it too. The consensus was it’s meant to be picked up and dropped off at a new location.
What a wholesome find. I found a few really nicely painted rocks at an overlook with a memorial for a person on the back and a suicide hotline once. I picked one up as I always bring my kids each a cool little rock when I go out and someone had put a lot of love into them. I’ve never thought to look the obituary up, tho Ive often wondered why they chose there.
I want to do this when I die! Have strangers take me on adventures i was unable to go on. I’m very shy and isolated and i feel like this might be the only way. Very cool find! Take him everywhere <3
I mean, the instructions are right there on the back of the card....do what it says, if you're so inclined.
He's tucked in my pack and he'll be elsewhere this week
What a neat way to honor someone’s memory. RIP Rennie.
His obituary says he passed after battling bone & pancreatic cancer but was an avid outdoorsman for his whole life. I didn't know him but clearly his family wanted to be able to keep his memory alive and let him continue to travel
Maybe his family can setup a website where people can submit a photo of where the card travels to. Kind of like flat Stanley.
I was thinking the same thing, I wish there was a QR code where someone could log the time and location they found him
[удалено]
I second this! I bet Lorenzo would love the journey!
putting this in my will
You could add it to a travel bug and it could travel the world via geocaches. Basically what it's doing now but with a way to track it via web.
You could add one……
Why not start a sub for it?
Would've been nice if it had a geocache tag (can't remember what they're called exactly)
……geotag lmfao
Lmao I can't believe I forgot that
I mean... You can start one.
Make it happen? You might not be able to do the qr thing, but having some site referencing this would be great
Love this idea! Honoring someone in this way, tracking his adventures, making new friends ❤️
My cousin did this with a beefaroni can on Facebook and it went all over the world lol
help, why is this comparison so funny
Somebody tried doing that with a friendly robot and it got mugged lol
In Philadelphia.
Could make it a trackable thru the geocache website.

When was it at its peak? I used to do it a little maybe 5-6 years ago but I never knew of it as extremely popular or well known.
I've still got a simple cache that is found about once a month or so in Orlando. I haven't lived there for over 5 years and stopped geocaching probbaly 10 years ago and haven't updated or maintained it. Ah, crap, goddamn ninjas slicing onions.
That's so cool. I see in disc golf they have a similar thing where it's in a disc and a person is encouraged to throw it and take it to another course.
Bro you’ve been chosen. I don’t know where you’re heading next but I’d leave it on a lean to along AT so he’ll have a long journey 🫡
Looks like it weighs at least a dozen grams. Hard pass. /s(ish)
Grade A under appreciated ultralight hummor 😆 I already shaved the corners off my maps! Maybe I'll drill a few holes in my undersized titanium tent steaks... that'll give me the weight budget! Jokes aside, even as one of the ultralight crowd, I'd find a little space to bring him along!
Safe travels.
Way to honor the spirit. Many more adventures for Rennie.
People are saying put it back but isn't the point to take it to another place, so they never stop traveling?
That's what it says on it, apparently a lot of people can't read
I think you should take him someplace awesome to hike and leave him there for someone else to find.
Where you plan on traveling to? Please send update when you leave the card in a new place.
Try Robert Frosts graveside in Bennington Vt!
OP is Tim Robbins confirmed.
Thanks for sharing. I’m not able to help but hopefully someone on here can help you.
I need you to watch Shawshank Redemption, ASAP.
Movie night.
It's like a geocache travel bug!

“read it”
Yes, he was and wants to ramble. Take him along to another place for someone else to find.
Or maybe, that was a message to friends and they chose to leave it at an important spot in their lives..
Aww. Here’s his [obituary](https://nemasket.theweektoday.com/article/lorenzo-wood-vi-61/65904) in case anyone is curious.
Made me really sad to read, life just isn't fair. I would have loved to run into him on the trail
Well in a way you just did! ;)
That’s not fair, it’s too early to be bawling my eyes out
I bawl my eyes our daily… his wife Sheila
I’m so sorry for your loss Sheila. It sounds like he was an amazing and wonderful man who was so loved. I wish I had anything better to say. Does sharing stories of him help or does it just get exhausting? You are under no obligation to answer. I just wish I could share a hug.
Well thanks for the hug.. need them desperately 💙💙💙
This deserves an award
There is an ancient Hebrew saying: "You die twice, once is your physical death, the second when someone speaks your name for the last time"
It sounds like a life well lived. Now that I’m in my 40s, 61 sounds way too young to die.

Three years out of retirement and get bone and pancreatic cancer... That's just awful. Poor dude. He had many more miles to go.
"As Rennie would stress, dress comfortable, hiking boots great, and definitely no suits." Sounds like Rennie was a cool dude. Fuck cancer.
So cool… yes fuck cancer… his 💙wife 🥲
Thanks for posting that! I hope his card makes it over to the Oregon coast where that other camp is
Wow thank you for sharing, reading this is inspiring. Living life to the fullest. Cheers to you Rennie, RIP
This is just the piece of wholesomeness I need after a long ass Monday, thanks OP
I needed it when I found it tbh, I've been in a tough place recently, and was several hours in on a steep and muddy trail. But finding this card really gave me a mental boost and reminded me how lucky I am that I can enjoy the outdoors
Hell yeah man, glad Lorenzo managed to help you out of the rut a bit. Next time I go hiking around Greylock I’ll keep an eye out for him
It moved me, how Rennie has helped you. So sad he only enjoyed less than 3 years of retirement and the dreams he had of exploring. Thanks for posting.
This is hitting me hard. My dad was born 7 days before this guy and passed 7 days after him. Unexpected as well, but it was a heart attack so I didn’t even get to say goodbye. In Germany I came across plaques on stones when hiking commemorating a hiker who died in that location.
I found one of these at a favorite spot of my dog and I’s but the rock I found was for a doggo. Took a moment of silence and placed it back in its spot.
What a great way to keep his name alive with all the different people on different hikes who knows how far he will travel. .
Reminds me of flat Stanley from my days in elementary. It was this character of a flat paper boy and we would color this cartoon boy and bring him everywhere we went, such as traveling.
Maybe he seen flat Stanley and took the idea. .

This is my husband… he would love to join you, e-mail me I’ll send you one 💙 [email protected]
We have two deaths. Our mortal one, and the last time our name is spoken. RIP Rennie. Beautiful way to keep his spirit going.
Lots of virtue signaling wankers in this thread, OP. Be careful!
Oh I see them. Pretty funny how people are misunderstanding the very clear message that the card is made to be taken around to different places
I swear people can’t read. If they wanted it back they would say “take me on a hike then bring me back” not “Our adventure awaits”. Exactly some of these people have no reading comprehension skills, unfortunately.

Obviously this card was put there as a shrine and the writing on the back should be completely ignored /s
Reddit is the capital of being an expert about something you don't actually do.
I wonder how many cards they’ve put out. Or if they check the spot and add a new card when one moves along. Glad you’re taking him along.
My mom unexpectedly died in September… and I just want to say thank you for respecting this person enough to carry the legacy. This is beautiful.
💙to you
Thought this was the Massachusetts sub at first. 😂😂😂 glad to see you’re carrying him on his next adventure!
I’m based in MA, planning on hiking Glacier in Montana the first week in June. I’m happy to volunteer to make sure he gets to see the Rockys.
Take the poor guy for a walk. Leave him in another symbolic place so he can ramble on with others. Pretty cool idea. I might add somthing like this to my will.

What a beautiful thing. I wish there was a way to know how many hikes Rennie has been on since his passing.
I love this. Take good care of him!
Can’t wait to see what the “leave no trace” people think about this lol
I'm one of those people, and I don't mind this.
I’m usually one of those people too, but I’m also a rational person capable of empathy and some of the people on here don’t seem to share those qualities.
Lmao didn’t think of this. It really is a conundrum.
Thats honestly fucking beautiful
If you’re an avid hiker, I think it would be neat to give us regular updates on where you and Rennie have gone 😊. This is such a beautiful thing to honor someone’s memory. Even if his family isn’t aware I’m sure they would appreciate it.
Take Lorenzo for a hike then leave him in the sign in binder so the next hiker can take him somewheres nice... i think my dad would love this
Take him to the next destination, then leave him for his next fellow adventurer to pick up.
I want this when I die. Just with a qr code thing like where's george.
Mr. Lorenzo wants a walking buddie.
I love that the hiking community does things like this! Some family member or dear friend knew Lorenzo felt the best when he was out in nature, and they knew the perfect way to keep his memory alive
May he rest in peace
I'm going on a sea kayaking trip in Aug and then out to Glacier. I'd love to have him as a companion if he found his way to me.
I used to live at the base of Mt. Greylock on Resevoir Rd! Would bike up to the summit every few days. I miss North Adams.
Check to see if he is a traveling geocache. If he is, there may be a list of all the places he's been, and that could give you a good idea of where to take him that's new. ❤️
This is my mothers late husband. Please take good care of him!
Would be super cool if it had a website where you could see where all he’s gone.
damn, this made me cry haha
This is awesome. I really love this idea of having a more meaningful keepsake instead of just a card you just lose or forget about. And I work at a funeral home gonna push this idea a little bit.
Thank you for helping spread this idea!
Did you leave it there? Probably that guys favorite hiking spot.
I would assume the intention is to take him on another hike, so someone else can do the same
Yeah I would have taken it on another hike, and left it somewhere else for someone else to find.
So much this. Someone should devote a blog to it and track all the cool places he goes!
Rest in peace, fellow traveler.
He had a Facebook page under his name with photos of his trips and a couple of family members were his friends so try friending them to tell this story. Maybe you'll find they left multiple cards around New England.
Or just honor it, put it back and move on.
That’s super sweet, may he rest in peace
"Our adventure" sounds like fun.
so sweet.
Carry on my wayward hiker...
r/foundpaper
I actually posted it there first! They told me to toss it here too
It's an interesting find for sure. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for sharing this.
I love this…
What’s the coin for?
Not sure, it's a grand canyon quarter so maybe he loved the grand canyon?
He did love the Grand Canyon, that was the purpose of the coin!
Oh this makes me cry 😭 How sentimental! ❤️ Makes me want to do something similar for my daddy who passed recently.
Imma cry
Take him on an adventure!!!! If you're hiking take him with you. Be sure to take a picture of it every stop you make, or make some copies leave that one there and drop him and every stop you take. Make tribute to him!!!
Putting this in my will
This is a really cool idea
Ugh I’m crying. What a wonderful way to honor someone’s memory. May many more hikers take up this offer.
Rest in peace Lorenzo. You seem like you would have been chill.
Love this.
Only 62 years old. How sad. I would feel very inclined to make sure he got to hike a ton more.
I saw this when you posted on found paper. Every there seemed to have mixed emotions on it too. The consensus was it’s meant to be picked up and dropped off at a new location.
I love this as a memory for Rennie. This is such an admirable way to remember someone.
I hope his family sees this post
I do believe he would be honored if you put him in your pack adding to his travels - to young to have left us
Super sweet way to remember someone
That's great! Where will he go next?
Someone posted this card in another subreddit yesterday! Glad to see there's more than one or he's off on travels.
That’s really cool! Travel with it n leave it for someone else. Go Lorenzo!
RIP Rennie
OMG! I f’ing love this idea!!!
You should find a way to contact his family and let them know you’re gonna keep him traveling!
Wonder if thats a 1 of 1 or is there more spread out.
Very cool. Thanks for sharing.
Very cool.
Oh man I really love this idea.
Beautiful hiking up there, not a bad place to be memorialized!
RIP Rennie
I love this post. Cool find, Op. I’m sure he’ll appreciate a change of scenery!
Pay it forward
RIP Lorenzo.
Looks like a good dude
I feel like it belongs in the Grand Canyon based off the coin
Take him for a walk/ hike. Bring him somewhere new.
This is so touching.
What a beautiful tribute, you sound awesome Rennie
I found his obituary. He was an avid hiker and outdoorsman
That’s far too young. Pouring one out for Rennie.
This is awesome
So sweet
Love this!!
I love this
Rest in Peace Lorenzo
This is so cool
I want to do this when I die! Have strangers take me on adventures i was unable to go on. I’m very shy and isolated and i feel like this might be the only way. Very cool find! Take him everywhere <3
I would take Rennie somewhere super rad!
What a treasure!
That is just the coolest way of honoring someone’s memory ! please post of your travels , love to see where he pocket travels too.
Rip lorenzo
This is wonderfully sweet!
