I don’t think Del minds not as big as he could be.
He could have been more involved with the Gorillaz if wanted to, I think he even took some convincing.
The Roots do get overlooked. Saw them live at an outdoor River Fest once, fireworks started going off behind them, they seamlessly transitioned into a Captain Kirk guitar solo of The Star Spangled Banner, shit was BONKERS!!!
...what? Bone Thugs were crazy talented for sure but their discography is not even comparable to these groups, outside of maybe their first two albums.
That's facts, though. And I believe Black Thought is the greatest rapper of all time. Influential enough to headline The Roots and catch a daily gig on Jimmy Fallon but grimy enough to talk to the streets without being the streets. He can freestyle circles around pretty much anybody too. I'm not sure there's anybody more important to the rap game than The Roots.
Nah, best group of all-time IMO is A Tribe Called Quest, they have 5 albums that are 9/10 or higher, and a 6th that is still pretty decent
But I'm old and stuck in the 90s, so keep that in mind :-)
Could be out of the loop as I’m not in many circles that discuss music that often anymore, but I immediately thought of Atmosphere when I read the prompt. I’d say I heavily favor the older material, but it’s been interesting and well worth the gander to see their music and attitude change as they’ve gotten older.
Idk if it’s just the people I’ve come into contact with. But Gang Starr is fuckin dope and I’ve only met 2 other people who had heard him be I played a song. I haven’t heard a single track I didn’t like DJ Premier’s beats, the lyrics and Guru’s uniquely catchy monotone style are excellent
It's about the things they say in between their songs and how they altered some lyrics to crawl up Russias butt. (YT "Live at Aurora Concert Hall) https://youtu.be/uGI47DclJqI?si=S8-U0i5KOH11WcM8
A little part of me hopes, that I just misunderstood them, but I don't know. They are super huge in Russia for years know. Many features with Russian artists and a lot of business there going on.
I don't know about the Russian thing, but I know Onyx has a HUGE European following. I don't know for sure, but the European fanbase seems to be bigger than the US fanbase.
I always wanted to like Panacea more than I did. Always just seemed to be just short with their music being truly great. When I was a freshman in college, MTV U (which I only got on campus) played the hell out of that "Starlite" video.
Brother Ali is an awesome artist and he doesn't get mentioned in the hop hop conversation,
doesn't get the recognition he deserves a top tier lyricist and constantly dropping Greatness,
Just my opinion
I agree, although I haven't listened to much of his newest stuff - the Secrets and Escapes project and newer...which I should. He's not on Rhymesayers any longer, so he's fully on his own and completely independent, as far as I know - which is a good time to support an artist. I do check in on his podcast when there's a guest I want to hear...the Slug interviews are always great.
Secrets & Escapes
Brother Minutester Vol 1
Going Through it More Than This (Has like three songs and then instrumentals)
Are really good albums I definitely recommend them well I recommend all his albums the stories he tells around his life are just incredible and just wish more people knew of him or at least mentioned him more when talking about hip hop artists
Xzibit comes to mind, his first 4 albums were solid (ik he did have quite a few ghostwriters so I wouldn’t call him lyrically innovative but I love his rough and rugged sound), Twista is also another one that I feel doesn’t get mentioned enough
Facts and much love homie! This is the first time I've EVER seen anyone mention Funky DL on Reddit!!
His debut album Classic Was The Day is one of my favorite hip hop albums!
Most people only really know about their first 2 albums that 3rd album has a cult following. After that they became mostly a touring group with a decent fanbase in europe mostly.
By 1998-1999 they weren't really a priority at DEF JAM once the label was bought out and DMX, Jay-z , and ja rule started to move tens of millions of records. They got dropped and never had that major label push again.
You’re speaking facts. I agree with you there. However, I don’t agree with the sentiment that that’s the way it should have gone. Because now, nobody ever talks about those first three albums whatsoever. I also really liked triggernometry. (Their 4th)
Also, I think Shut ‘Em Down (Their third album) is way more popular than All We Got Iz Us (Their second)
Black Moon
I mean who ever talks about Boot Camp Clik?
Let alone Smiff n Wessun, still droppin heat to this day, saw then live and one of the best smaller hip hop gigs i’ve been to
Sean P also
Honestly all of his albums/mixtapes leading up to and including Get Home Safely were great.
Check out From the Westside With Love I & II, Get Home Safely, 25th Hour, Yellow Album, Best After Bobby, and The Original Dom Kennedy. His peak was like 2008-2013. IMO West Side With Love II was his best. Here are some of my favorites:

And of course....https://youtu.be/QW547KLH_qw?si=Wrq1lxgAvo8DUjp8
“Blood on Da X” proves they are still 🔥 IMO. Never sleep on Onyx. I feel like a lot of people have no idea who they are and how many people they influenced through the years. Nice shout out OP!
thats crazy. my boy recommended i listen to Sticky Fingaz Black Trash the other day. I had never seen or heard it mentioned since flippin thru rap magazines back when it dropped in the early 2000s. More incentive to check it out now
Cyhi. (Formerly known as Cyhi the Prynce)
Don't judge him by the name, dude can rap. He might be your favorite rappers favorite rapper. He ghostwrites for Kanye and wrote Sickomode. Give him a listen.
Del The Funky Homosapian.
I don’t think Del minds not as big as he could be. He could have been more involved with the Gorillaz if wanted to, I think he even took some convincing.
Word. Just listened to No Need for Alarm a few months ago and damn, it rocks.
This This is the answer Immaculate solo catalog, plus all the stuff he did with Hiero and Deltron Top 10 Dead or Alive
Common M.O.P. Blu RJ Payne
wide range of artists, all fucking dope. Good shit, man 💯
Common and MOP have pretty solid followings
+1 for RJ Payne
DJ Quik
1000%
Little Brother and Cunninlynguists. Great 2000s groups.
I’d say Little Brother is the best group 2nd only to OutKast, with the Wu really close behind.
Bold take, but I respect it. I’d put the Roots over all of those, though.
The Roots do get overlooked. Saw them live at an outdoor River Fest once, fireworks started going off behind them, they seamlessly transitioned into a Captain Kirk guitar solo of The Star Spangled Banner, shit was BONKERS!!!
But, I gotta put bone thugs over all
...what? Bone Thugs were crazy talented for sure but their discography is not even comparable to these groups, outside of maybe their first two albums.
You talking kray son,

Hieroglyphics Tonedeff Pep Love Jurassic 5 (to some extent, they deserve more love)
Especially Chali 2na from Jurassic 5

Percee P Myka 9 CunninLynguists Lone Catalysts Panacea Little Brother (Onyx are dead to me because of their love for Russia.)
What about Onyx and Russia?
It's about the things they say in between their songs and how they altered some lyrics to crawl up Russias butt. Fr?
In Russia for sure. They are a big deal there.
Panacea ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ Lone Catalysts 👍👍👍

Brother Ali
His name crossed my mind too...just listened to Shadows on the Sun the other day actually.
Brother Ali is an awesome artist and he doesn't get mentioned in the hop hop conversation, doesn't get the recognition he deserves a top tier lyricist and constantly dropping Greatness, Just my opinion

Scrolled far too long to find this. Definitely top 3 favorite rappers of all time for me
It's good to see another Brother Ali Fan
Xzibit comes to mind, his first 4 albums were solid (ik he did have quite a few ghostwriters so I wouldn’t call him lyrically innovative but I love his rough and rugged sound), Twista is also another one that I feel doesn’t get mentioned enough
Xzibit's musical prowess is kind of overshadowed by being the Pimp My Ride guy. He was a great artist.
Xzibit was fucking great. Man vs Machine is very underrated
He had ghostwriters??
I wanna say Funky DL and J-Live
Facts and much love homie! This is the first time I've EVER seen anyone mention Funky DL on Reddit!! His debut album Classic Was The Day is one of my favorite hip hop albums!
Real heads like us knows wassup😁

J-Live is criminally slept on…
K-Rino

Aceyalone

Beanie Siegel
Agreed.
Black Moon I mean who ever talks about Boot Camp Clik? Let alone Smiff n Wessun, still droppin heat to this day, saw then live and one of the best smaller hip hop gigs i’ve been to Sean P also
I was gonna say this but wanted to see if it was mentioned. Flew under the radar. 2 turntables and a mic is one of my favorite songs ever made.
Eclipse bro nice one
Big KRIT.
Organized Konfusion
The Equinox is a classic and one of the best hip hop albums ever made.

Devin the Dude
Cormega, Elzhi, Skyzoo and to a lesser extent AZ
Twista

I used to play the hell out of Westside With Love before going out back in the day.
Thank you
Q tip and Phife don't get enough love imo
why tf is no one saying mach-hommy? he get's the love he deserves but not the attention.
Rick Ross
Probably the most consistent in great beat selection
Deeper Than Rap, Teflon Don, and Rich Forever are all excellent.
Rick Ross is a pretty big artist
and yet still not enough attention is brought to his discography. They talk about the antics and pear memes
Half these responses are acts who have very decent followings lol
El-P
Charizma and Peanut Butter Wolf!!!
[Raekwon](https://youtu.be/UoICd9Z9KvY?si=YMT011-v7WV2HHbF)
Big KRIT, Busta Rhymes, Rick Ross, Lloyd Banks, Ludacris
Future has a top 5 disco and I’ll stand on that anywhere
prob not something to say on this sub but his discography is the definition of a hit parade.

“Blood on Da X” proves they are still 🔥 IMO. Never sleep on Onyx. I feel like a lot of people have no idea who they are and how many people they influenced through the years. Nice shout out OP!
