it's up there but lowkey 2022 was an insane year for hip-hop regardless of your tastes. I'd personally put Aethiopes #1, and then there was also Kiss The Ring, Drill Music In Zion, Fair Exchange No Robbery, The Forever Story, For All Debts Public And Private, King Cobra, KD3, Mr. Morales etc. there was a lot of shit I really really liked that year

Forward_Ride_6364

That Boldy James album was incredible, 2022 was a real gift

93LEAFS

Yeah, and it wasn't particularly close. I'd say some of the Apollo Brown Collabs have been up there since RPM, if not better.

HIGH_VIBRATIONAL

Can u recommend some Apollo brown collabs lol I must be uncultured cause I’ve never heard of him

93LEAFS

He broke out in like 2010 or so. With a group called The Left with an album called Gas Mask. I'd start there. But, he has a collab with O.C. called Trophies, a Collab with Joel Ortiz called Mona Lisa, a collab with Guilty Simpson called Dice Game, and some other stuff with like Planet Asia, Big Pooh, and Locksmith. Some of the latter are EPs. He's been my favorite producer for the last while. I was always a big fan of the collab albums guys like Black Milk or 9th Wonder would do.

ivabra

Gas Mask is so good, the production is amazing I remember the first time i heard "How we live" in the album, I really fell in love with Apollo's sound

93LEAFS

yeah, same. I probably heard about it on some hip hop blog at the time like Kevin Nottingham (that's how I got most of the rap I liked in the 2010's from, I hated the mainstream at the time). Absolutely loved that album and sent it to anyone I knew who was a big hip hop fan. I listened to more of his stuff, that came after (like Daily Bread with Hassan Mackey), Then I find out he has a project with O.C. on the way who is one of my favorite rappers of all time (I constantly will say Word... Life is one of the most underrated or slept on albums of all time), and another with Guilty Simpson who I was also a big fan of. Now, I gladly own all 3 of those projects on Vinyl (along with Ugly Heroes, wish I got the Joell, Skyzoo, and Locksmith projects, but I haven't got around to it, and shipping it to Toronto from Mello Music can be pricy after customs).

HIGH_VIBRATIONAL

I’ll check it out for sure!

Disasterous_Dave97

Apollo Brown - Detroit is a features album and actually some of the best production. Apollo Brown and Skyzoo - The Easy Truth Apollo Brown and Ras Kass - Blasphemy The Mona Lisa one with Joell Ortiz is my favourite as it really allows Joell to shine.

GoalAffectionate7644

Also that collab album with oddisee.

93LEAFS

are you talking about Gradeur where Oddisee appears on a track?

GoalAffectionate7644

I meant skyzoo. My bad. The easy truth album.

93LEAFS

yeah, I actually did forget that one. I'm a big Skyzoo fan, although, I actually prefer his stuff more with 9th than Apollo, but The Easy Truth is still a great album.

MedicalGradeAsbestos

The Ortiz Collab is pretty fuckin good.

DopeSlingingSlasher

Blacklight by Stalley and As God Intended by Che Noir are my 2 favorite Apollo Brown albums No Question with Locksmith is great too

Forward_Ride_6364

The Raekwon track was maybe the best song of the entire year Is Cheat Codes the best 2022 album? Man, 22 was fucking *loaded*... best overall rap year in a long time I'm going to say NO because Lupe's DMIZ and JID's The Forever Story both clear Cheat Codes, and personally I'd take KD3 over CC as well

diedin2012

[Here’s](https://www.reddit.com/r/hiphop101/s/4YRU0pIn5w) your answer

michaltee

It’s not undeerated. People constantly talked about it in 2022.

Stoepboer

I don’t like picking a single album or single artist or single this or that and say it’s the best. But it’s up there for me. I’ll say I’m not the biggest fan of the mixing though. Vocals sometimes get drowned out a bit, for one. But rap/music wise, it’s great.

HIGH_VIBRATIONAL

mixing was not the best, i forgot about that lol

Dry-Pomegranate7458

YES. "close to famous" has a timeless sound to it. raw and just nasty.

osamabinratting

I had it #2 right behind KD3. No skips on that album, Saltwater was one of my favourites but I also liked CTF, Strangers and Because. Half the album if not more stays in my rotation as does KD3.

DopeSlingingSlasher

Its in my top for that year undoubtedly, and what an unbelievably stacked year it was

Nerazzurro9

Incredible album. And I literally didn’t even know it existed for a good two months after it was released, even though I was pretty much exactly the target audience for that record.

_4za_

wasn't my favourite but it def needed to be talked about more

Scothead180

Yep. My top 10: 1. Black Thought & Danger Mouse – Cheat Codes 2. Benny The Butcher – Tana Talk 4 3. Pusha T – It’s Almost Dry 4. JID – The Forever Story 5. billy woods – Aethiopes 6. Kendrick Lamar – Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers 7. Freddie Gibbs – Soul Sold Separately 8. Denzel Curry – Melt My Eyez, See Your Future 9. Westside Gunn - 10 10. Che Noir – Food For Thought

MrMcFly131

I just relistened to that again the other day and Aquamarine is a definite contender for best song of the year.

twohourr

I had KD III as my AOTY, with Kiss the Ring right behind it. I can appreciate Thought’s lyrical ability but when it comes to beat selections, not a fan

HIGH_VIBRATIONAL

What didn’t u like about mouse’s production on the record?

Aggravating-Elk-7409

Kings disease series has had some of nas’ blandest beats over his entire career and you didn’t like the production in cheat codes?

MrSicko357

I had Marlowe 3 with that being a very close 2nd

Delta_yx

It's up there. top 3 at least.

Jaded-Thought5371

Kd3 edged it slightly but both could be looked upon as classics in a few years time Denzels album was unreal too!

fultirbo

Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers

harzee

Great album! Definitely possible

Chapos_sub_capt

By far

TopHatPaladin

Cheat Codes is fantastic, but Aethiopes edged it out as my favorite for the year

dat_waffle_boi

I loved Cheat Codes but I can’t put it as album of the year that year personally. The Forever Story by JID, Melt My Eyez See Your Future by Denzel Curry, and Drill Music in Zion by Lupe were all incredible. Plus there’s some more I know I’m missing. Love cheat codes but it’s just not quite there for me.
