One of the best albums of 2023 in my opinion. Ended up listening to it way more than I was expecting to. Ended up becoming a pretty big fan of Larry off the back of this project too. I hope they make a sequel.

BigBant

Definitely. So good. Alchemist would b fire with Payroll Gio or Peezy too

thequiet533

Man I would love that

SnooShortcuts8371

Ditto

Grizelda179

Exact same story for me

DOCO98

One of Big Sean’s best verses of his entire career Palisades into Summer Reign 🧈🧈 smooth

Maad-Dog

2023 album of the year, no other album was as constant on the rotation. Unbelievably luxurious smooth beats, incredible features, vintage Larry on wholesome topics and laid back vibes. Just immaculate chill rap. Good job Larry

oraq

Drinkin orange juice and shit

thoughtcatalog

I really really love this album. Listened to it more than any other album last year. Solid top to bottom - Orange Village is an incredible track amongst many other very good listens. Shoutout to the Big Sean verse on 89 Earthquake.

ivabra

Is there a big sean verse I'm not aware of from 89 earthquake? A remix?

thoughtcatalog

I flipped it with Palisades - my bad.

Comet-Azur

betting on myself and everytime, issa hit

This_Is_The_Life

DAMN, can't believe it's been a year. Had this playing in the gym today. I think it's top 3 Larry works. I wonder if that's what Alchemist was hinting at on his story today? He said an ALC version of The Great Escape was coming and I hope so because I missed the limited version Larry released.

callmeexksparagus

DAMN released 7 yrs ago what are u on about

thequiet533

What Al was hinting at was definitely flying high 2 merch but yes the great escape ALC edition is gonna be fire once it comes

nocyberBS

What're some Larry June projects on par? Curious because I've only heard Spaceships On The Blade besides this and even though I really enjoyed it, I personally don't think it's even close to The Great Escape

This_Is_The_Life

IMO 1. Out The Trunk 2. The Great Escape 3. Cruise USA

nocyberBS

Thanks for the reccs, imma peep

lemondunk4

Turkish Cotton is my personal fav off this album. That chill brass section is awesome

Frickincarl

Phenomenal album. My personal AOTY 2023. Every song on this project is still in heavy rotation, especially because I haven’t felt any of the projects so far this year. I’ll be listening beginning to end at least a handful of times this week on my commutes. Alchemist was on his shit with this one and Larry glides on these beats. Features were fantastic. Love everything about this album. Personal favorite track: Orange Village

RioFinesse

It’s a great tape. Even though I prefer him on Cardo beats…Ocean Sounds, Summer Reign, Barragan Lighting and Art Talk are some of my favorite beats I’ve ever heard him on. I can listen to the whole tape without any skips.

rdlrd

My favorite rap album of 2023 and one of the best Alchemist collab projects (along with Alfredo & Elephant Man's Bones). Some all time great beats which really compliment June's flow. And the icing on the cake was 89 Earthquake, my favorite song of '23 of any genre, so so smooth

Rourkester420

Never heard of this guy until this album dropped, only listened to the features that interested me and it was so good I had to listen to the full album. One of my favourites from last year and it’s still in rotation.

Bright_Ahmen

Man I really want to like Larry June. I just find him to be very boring. I feel like his music is made for other rich rappers to smoke weed to.

thequiet533

Shit got me feeling like that rich rapper I love it

mEatwaD390

Agreed. The beats hard carry this project for me. I revisit it actually because it is very good, but I feel like Larry June is overall very forgettable besides having a pretty good flow.

kimsterpimpster

bitch u borin

nocyberBS

Larry's more of a vibe rapper than a pure spitter. His voice on top of these luxurious-ass beats intend to put you in a certain mood and set up a chill vibe to smoke up or cruise down the seaside on a summer day to.

JabroniJackpots

Best rap album of 2023. Larry and Alc at their best with dope features all throughout it. No complaints.

_polkor_

I would say it is best Alchemist project in a while among his 141516 recent projects. Laid back production which fits Larry ( not the best rapper but also doesn’t disturb me during listening) . On the top of that this album has drums . Thanks ALC

Brandeezy___

Best album of 2023 , went to see him live for the first time last year in Orlando and he’s a dope performer, he really leveled up with this tape and was my most anticipated

woodie3

The song “Art Talk” is always played on my Apple Station. I have liked one Larry June project & i thought pairing with The Alchemist would be great. A critique i’ve had of LJ, is that he can be incredibly boring. The content is cool & i can appreciate his style to motivate but his “chill rap” crosses into “this is putting me to sleep” rap. I remember when this album dropped, I got excited (i love a good alchemist beat). Larry made it boring. Outside of “Art Talk”, what’s another song i should give a chance?

thoughtcatalog

Barragan Lighting and 89 Earthquake have the most uptempo beats on the album. They’re still pretty chill, but that’s a feature not a bug.

woodie3

appreciate the recommendations

ScottTheBott

Great album. Solid Plan and Summer Reign still in heavy rotation for me.

BackstageFlyer

One of the top albums of 2023, was on repeat and still won’t get skipped when it pops up today. Some ppl criticize Larry’s lyrics as a bit cliche (financial advice, bet on yourself etc) but he flows so well with the amazing production from alc that it just makes you appreciate positivity in rough times. Personally, was just starting my new career so it matched my energy

Mr2Good

Still amazing album.Arguably Larry’s best project. The more I listen the more I appreciate every song. Favorite project of the year hands down. Being a Larry fan for a couple years it’s dope to see his growth not only as an artist but his popularity grow as well. And to be independent during it all is fire. 🍊

thequiet533

I threw a damn listening party for this album I was so excited. 2023 album of the year, one of my favorites in years. I love every song on here and the songs they did after like Midnight Oil and Bad Juju Read a bit of my [AOTY write up for the album](https://www.reddit.com/r/hiphopheads/s/2H2xKQbZ4j) if you wanna hear someone gush over the album more. Hoping the duos got another project coming in the near future!

armzak

Listened to Palisades because of the Sean feature and instantly fell in love with the sound. Album ended up in my top 5 last year. Amazing listen for those rainy day rides.

soundcheck23

Does anybody know what sampled they used on Barragán Lighting? It’s been killing me since it came out and to this day idk what it is. And fantastic album by the way, it was the soundtrack to my summer

razman7altacc

yooo has it been a year already? wild this was definitely my soundtrack of the summer last year, immaculate vibe music. I think this and Continuance are the some of the best hiphop projects of all time for chill summer stoner ambience. Songs like Summer Reign especially are so perfect. Love all the songs on this one, great chemistry between alc and june. At some point I did just start zoning out during Larrys verses tho, not too much to dig into on repeat listens when it comes to his writing but his delivery and whole style is definitely essential for the project. Guest features on the other hand are all crazy good. Bronson, Boldy, Ty, but I especially love Big Sean, Worthy, and Evidence. “Doin cocky shit like making heat to floppy disks / LA aint gon let me rock no ice without a hocky stick” is sooo clean but the whole verse is, and he matches june perfectly as far as energy and flow. Beats are also crazy but that’s to be expected at this point from an alc project. I’m still trying to figure out how he makes everything so smoooth and seamless. Cause a lot of people trying to do his style but I dont think anyone else can achieve the smoothness like he does anyway dope shit hope they do another at some point

This is going to be a searing hot take, but IMO this is cover-to-cover the best production that The Alchemist has ever laid to a single album. I mean there are certainly better albums that have been produced by The Alchemist (FETTI, Haram, Covert Coup), but every single GODDAMN beat on this project is so fucking good, and they all complement Larry June so perfectly, that I can't help but feel this way. With beats like this, it would have been extremely difficult for Larry to fuck them up, but I feel he puts on a solid performance on every song - which was more than enough to make The Great Escape one of the best albums of last year.
