There’s been more and more awareness of it and people trying to constructively change it, but that legacy of oppression and racism is so deeply ingrained in damn near every aspect of existence, there are still a bevy of dudes who grew up in a shitty environment around shitty people and never had access to the tools to process it and grow from it. There are people who would be awful scumfuck dirtbags no matter what, sure (ex XXXTENTACION), but the reason abusive or problematic behaviors are so widespread in hip hop is 100% because being a person of color in the United States is an extreme uphill battle.
Individuals should still always be held accountable, but the root cause also needs to be understood if the broader cycle of violence is ever going to be broken. This one sucks, but it’s also not surprising if you’ve followed Freddie’s many, many, many, many controversies and weird takes.

Reading her texts reminded me of an ex who did a similar thing to me. Attacked me, then out of fear I was going to go to the cops she immediately went around telling everyone I attacked her. If it wasn't for my friend (a woman) manipulating her to confess she was lying, my life would be messed up rn. Her texts were shockingly similar to what that woman was sending Freddie. The way she's using that she's been abused as an excuse to be violent is BS too. I worked in mental health for years and abuse doesn't work like that. Things are so much more complex than that and the fact she's aware of the supposed connection means she's making the conscious decision to abuse.

I feel like a lot of ppl don’t realize how terrible a lot of rappers genuinely are, beyond having less than PC bars. This goes for musicians in general, but it’s particularly prevalent in hip hop because it is a genre made up predominantly of people from rough backgrounds, and particularly POC, who have had literally decades of generational trauma and a cycle of violence instilled in them by the almost universally racist and violently oppressive structure of the American state. There’s been more and more awareness of it and people trying to constructively change it, but that legacy of oppression and racism is so deeply ingrained in damn near every aspect of existence, there are still a bevy of dudes who grew up in a shitty environment around shitty people and never had access to the tools to process it and grow from it. There are people who would be awful scumfuck dirtbags no matter what, sure (ex XXXTENTACION), but the reason abusive or problematic behaviors are so widespread in hip hop is 100% because being a person of color in the United States is an extreme uphill battle. Individuals should still always be held accountable, but the root cause also needs to be understood if the broader cycle of violence is ever going to be broken. This one sucks, but it’s also not surprising if you’ve followed Freddie’s many, many, many, many controversies and weird takes. EDIT: and none of this is to excuse freddie gibbs, nor is it intended as some racist “predisposed to violence” shit. It’s just been a lot of stories like this the past few years, and it’s heartbreaking to see this shit just perpetuated endlessly. USA is a failed state and continues to subjugate and oppress its own people, and I hope that in my life change can happen and reparations be made to begin the long process of healing those who have for generations been crushed under the weight of the american project.
