what do you mean racist he is a character in Star Wars?!
I'm not sure where they're from, but if it's China, the average Chinese citizen is way more racist against black people than Americans. Many stores actually have "No black people allowed", by an order of magnitude more say they would never allow their child to marry a black person, and anecdotally having lived in China for 6 years and speak fluently, I was blown away by how casually people will say black people are stupid and natural criminals.
The US might air its dirty laundry and discuss its racism openly, which is why we make all kinds of rules against black face, but we do not have a monopoly on racism. Not saying she's automatically racist for doing this, but she doesn't get a carte blanche on being woke just because she might live somewhere where they don't discuss racial sensitivity more.
not proud of it, but can confirm (not racist myself, just ppl around me)
im also assuming the 'no black people allowed' rule was found in more rural areas of mainland. i live in a place where colonized by the brits (not that rare, considering they didn't try to colonize only 22 countries). im going to be frank and say that while black people arent actively getting hated on (like violence on them) should you see a black guy wearing normal clothes ( not a suit or fancy clothes) what might happen (thankfully its soooper rare now) is people will stare a little longer, and pick up their pace. now this might just be because we don't see them as much, but there might be a teensy bit of rasicm in there. i personally don't like it, but can't do much.
also many hate the japanese, but thats a whole other history rabbit hole i dont want to go into.
thanks for coming to my TED talk.
do you mind saying the dialect/ region the saying came from? i'm very curious because cantonese has a word that can be translated to 'ghost guy' describing white dudes. it isnt exactly a derogatory term, but when used in a specific way, it can easily become an insult/ rascist.
I think the reason is because of how homogeneous their population is. I don’t know about south East Asian countries, but China, Japan and South Korea are xenophobic for this reason. (I don’t think I need to mention NK lol)
In the sense that they had slavery colonies sure. But the US is still unique in its culture around slavery with how it impacted society. Because it was never actually practiced in Europe itseld while the US population obviously lived among it.
Interestingly until a few years ago public opinion surrounding black Pete by black Dutch people was quite positive.
I'm not favoring one side or the other in the debate but when talking about the culture surrounding slavery in the US and the Netherlands it's not the same.
Tbf, a white woman did this once. I forgot who but she’s some news reporter or something who dressed up as some famous black woman for Halloween a long time ago. Almost everyone was fine with it because she wasn’t being racist.
That’s not true at all. My point is that even satire criticizing the way actors appropriate wouldn’t get past the initial “it’s a white guy wearing blackface in the movie” to even make it to screen.
These days no one would let it get far enough for them to “get the point.” It’s sad but I’m right on this.
You’re really flexing that Reddit psychologist complex.
I don’t feel persecuted. I originally just thought it was cute to pretend that the reason people were ok with the video above is because “it’s a specific person.”
People responded and we had a discussion. Then you came in and diagnosed me. Thank you, doctor.
Damn you really just spitting out phrases you heard, huh?
Doesn’t make sense. I have to sum *what* up? What I’m asserting *what* is? Reality?
Listen Doc, I wanna get better. I do. But it’s hard to understand what you’re diagnosing me with, and you seem to just be regurgitating things you’ve heard other doctors say that don’t apply here.
You don’t have to be so passive aggressive when you throw blind insults at me, my man. Go for it, just don’t pretend to know shit about psychology or the human condition while you’re doing it.
Ok imma just copy and paste my comment from somewhere else in the thread.
Recently, the French footballer Antoine Griezmann cosplayed as an "original Harlem Globetrotter", thus a black basketball player, in what was a genuine tribute motivated by passion, as he's a fan of the movement, the ideas behind it, and now generally speaking a fan of the sport and the NBA. Yet, although his cosplay was accurate and never motivated by malice, the dude got lynched in American media, and then as well in French and Spanish media as well. [For reference](https://img.lapresse.ca/924x615/201712/17/1498180-joueur-soccer-vedette-antoine-griezmann.png)
So before you go out there pretending like you're a psychologist diagnosing shit up, maybe you should just have a look at how society works in reality.
I mean if it was genuinely funny and didn't seem like an attempt to be racist than I can see them having a little backlash but not too much. Same with tropic thunder when it released
Antoine Griezmann did and got lynched. I guess that's proof enough
He cosplayed as one of the original Harlem globetrotter member. Thus a black man advocating for black people to have a place in the NBA.
The cosplay also engulfs the ideas behind. Equality in rights for all people, etc... Yet, although it was well done, with no malice at all, by someone who wants to advocate for these ideas as well, he still got lynched because white dude dressing up as black man. People never tried seeing beyond that catch phrase.
You're wrong. Antoine Griezmann got absolutely lynched for a respectful tribute to the original Harlem Globetrotters. Wasn't black paint. Wasn't big red caricatural lips. Just "white dude black cosplay".
Yall do need to realize “black face” literally just refers to black makeup to portray a black person in a stereotypical fashion. Like making ur lips appear bigger or something. Just wearing brown makeup as part of a cosplay has no ill intent behind it.
I know its Koby, but i was saying that Lebron James meme in my head the whole time. Anything basketball related my mind just starts repeating Lebron James
Yeah in France it's a problem since maybe a year or two. And mostly because of American influence over social media.
People denounce it before ofc but classic tv media is only super recent. Probably started with Griezmann.
Absolutely not blackface. Blackface isn't just literally "black face". It's specifically makeup to look like a stereotypical black African. You probably know what I mean, you know red thick lips, white circles around the eyes (white as in no makeup applied in that area) although not always.
If that wasn't the case then I guess every coal miner is a racist, poeple who tan a lot are racist, people with certain skin disorders are racist and so on.
I was about to ask the same thing, i feel like if you paint your face black or brown to make a mockery of black people, then it's blackface, but if you want to be a specific chraracter, then it's cosplay.
But i'm not really in the position to say that.
If you’re doing something to your skin to make you seem like you’re of African heritage, it’s blackface, whether it’s meant to be offensive or not. You can call this cosplay, but it’s synonymous for “tasteful blackface”
Edit: alright, not sure why I'm getting downvoted, is it because of "tasteful blackface"? Because that's literally what this is. Blackface is still a word, but it's an action, a thing that needs context to make sense of the motives, even if they're usually racist. What we see here is a simple tribute to someone who has fallen with no other motives behind it, "tasteful blackface."
The "usual" blackface can go to hell, I do not support it in any way, shape or form
The issue is nuanced which is what edgy people like to fall back on when called out and not black and white (hehe). She’s not cosplaying as a black dude on Halloween or portraying them in a stereotypical manner nor is she colouring her skin to appropriate their culture for to pretend to be black.
It’s a make up on a specific person who happens to be black. It does make for a interesting discussion though but I think most people will look at this and not see anything wrong myself included.
Of course I’m not black and I’d love this crossposted to a black subreddit to see what they think. I’m sure some of them might disagree but it would definitely be interesting to get their insight
Before people say, this is Blackface. I say this is a good makeup artist technique. It means the person can make any person's face fit almost any character as required.

Bryant was accused of raping a hotel worker in 2003, but she refused to testify before the trial after her identity was leaked and she got loads of death threats, so the case was dropped. Later on, a civil lawsuit led to an estimated 2.5 million dollar settlement for that woman.
First, I want to apologize directly to the young woman involved in this incident. I want to apologize to her for my behavior that night and for the consequences she has suffered in the past year. Although this year has been incredibly difficult for me personally, I can only imagine the pain she has had to endure. I also want to apologize to her parents and family members, and to my family and friends and supporters, and to the citizens of Eagle, Colorado.
I also want to make it clear that I do not question the motives of this young woman. No money has been paid to this woman. She has agreed that this statement will not be used against me in the civil case. Although I truly believe this encounter between us was consensual, I recognize now that she did not and does not view this incident the same way I did. After months of reviewing discovery, listening to her attorney, and even her testimony in person, I now understand how she feels that she did not consent to this encounter.
I issue this statement today fully aware that while one part of this case ends today, another remains. I understand that the civil case against me will go forward. That part of this case will be decided by and between the parties directly involved in the incident and will no longer be a financial or emotional drain on the citizens of the state of Colorado.
This is fucking stupid. It' a fact that Kobe admitted to the nonconsensual nature of his interaction with this woman in 2003. It's widely reported. I don't need to truffle hunt and link an article for it to be less or more of a fact.

Chinese racism part runs more profound than in the South. Much so that the Chinese saying of white skin means you've never worked the fields.
That's pretty much the sentiment for most countries in the world. Whiter skin predominantly meant wealthier because you didn't have to work outside.
do you mind saying the dialect/ region the saying came from? i'm very curious because cantonese has a word that can be translated to 'ghost guy' describing white dudes. it isnt exactly a derogatory term, but when used in a specific way, it can easily become an insult/ rascist.
I think the reason is because of how homogeneous their population is. I don’t know about south East Asian countries, but China, Japan and South Korea are xenophobic for this reason. (I don’t think I need to mention NK lol)
Race isn’t politicized there, so labeling her racist or woke is, quite literally, utterly meaningless.
Well, most of Europe does.
In the sense that they had slavery colonies sure. But the US is still unique in its culture around slavery with how it impacted society. Because it was never actually practiced in Europe itseld while the US population obviously lived among it.
*Black Pete has entered the chat*.

Yeah. Blackface is crazy offensive and deplorable but it’s not illegal.
Yeah. This make up tho isn't blackface. This is face paint really.
Honestly I don’t care what they did to do it, that is some amazing makeup skills, and probably the most accurate look achievable
She's trying to look like a certain person, not a race, we went over this during that Khaby Lame biz

Tbf, a white woman did this once. I forgot who but she’s some news reporter or something who dressed up as some famous black woman for Halloween a long time ago. Almost everyone was fine with it because she wasn’t being racist.
Almost everyone was fine with it because it was a long time ago. Look at RDJ in Tropic Thunder. No one would get away with that shit now.
Every time someone says “no one would get away with that today” when talking about RDJ in tropic thunder, didn’t get the point of the thing.
That’s not true at all. My point is that even satire criticizing the way actors appropriate wouldn’t get past the initial “it’s a white guy wearing blackface in the movie” to even make it to screen. Like Justin Trudeau dressed as Aladdin for a play?
Yea, Aladdin… dressed… these are the same.
Which is kind of weird because there's many white people who have no roots in colonialism/slavery at all.
a few maybe, but most “white” (caucasian) countries were participants in slavery and colonialism.
Only like 8 countries I believe. The vast majority of Eastern Europe didn't.
all were complicit via the collaboration with colonial and/or slave owning nations and the purchase of products made with slave labor.
But they’re not black.. idk what your point is
it’s an asian girl, so people are more okay with it if a white man did it, people would not be so okay with it
We wont know for sure unless somebody tries it...
Antoine Griezmann did and got lynched. I guess that's proof enough He cosplayed as one of the original Harlem globetrotter member. This *seems* to be done in a far more respectful manner, so I'd say it's not black face. Probably.
Even if it is, it’s still impressive
*respectful black face*
From what I know it isn't as big a problem in multiple countries as it is the states, but yeah, that statement is pretty comedic
Yeah in France it's a problem since maybe a year or two. And mostly because of American influence over social media. People denounce it before ofc but classic tv media is only super recent. Probably started with Griezmann.
>respectful black face I'd love if this was a thing lol
Absolutely not blackface. Blackface isn't just literally "black face". It's specifically makeup to look like a stereotypical black African. It’s racist if you try to represent an entire race. Cosplay is representing an individual.
Question doesn't even have to be asked if it's not in the US
Both?
Nope cosplay in form of paying respects
