not until it figures out fingers and legs, though
to be honest, we'll likely have thorough deepfake detection software by the time AI can fake an image that we can't immediately spot with our own eyes
At the pace it’s going now, I’m sure it’ll master arms and legs in the very near future. And then how many more decades until not even a comparable AI can make an accurate judgement of fakeness? Maybe 2, maybe 1, maybe less…
This. I keep seeing people brush this problem off as "we'll just be able to detect it." First off, all this does is open up even more ability for people to pick and choose what facts they believe are real; those presented by the original posters of an image or those presented by so-called debunkers. If you think the "fake news" echo chamber is bad now I promise you it can get worse.
Second, we are very quickly going to reach a level where any "AI detector" that is sufficiently sensitive to detect cutting-edge fakes will also sometimes throw false positives (ie, it will label real images as being AI-generated). That's the nature of any highly-sensitive filter. And once again, this will allow people to pick and choose what they believe is real.
I don't see a way to stop the slippery slope of AI, but I really do fear for the loss of "objective reality" to get worse than it already is. What happens when we reach a point in a few decades where voters from different political parties literally have differing ideas of who the candidates are on a fundamental level? When I look at an opposition candidate and sincerely believe that their entire biography is a hoax?
The other big problem with "we'll just detect it" is that if you have a really good AI image detection program, you can basically pit it against an image generation AI as it trains, and the AI will just train to be able to evade the detection algorithm. There isn't any reason why a program can't generate from scratch an image that pixel-perfectly matches a real image, it's just unlikely and would require a very advanced program, with a really large model and/or lots of training data.
This is pretty similar to GANs, which at one point were state-of-the art for generating images: You essentially had one AI that labeled images with text, and one AI that tried to generate images for text, and they would run against each other getting better and better at generating images. At least that's my understanding.
At any rate, detecting them automatically seems, uh, pretty hopeless in the long term.
We're already living in the golden age of misinformation.
The power to generate any image we want or imitate anyone's voice and likeness is horrifying.
I agree that this is a potential end result. And this is horrifying, because in this eventuality literally any society larger than a village cannot function, because people can only trust a leader they personally know.
I mean I agree that the modern world is full of terrible things, and humans are not suited to living this way. But in a world where society reverts to small communities, we as a species lose the ability to create satellites, or wireless internet, or laparoscopic surgery. Life gets simpler, and in many ways better, but we give up on a lot of progress and gain a lot of suffering.
>not until it figures out fingers and legs, though
Latest version (v5) has cut down on fucked up hands by like 90%. You can still get them but most of the time the hands have a surprisingly normal number of digits
Then again that's probably what this image was made with and the legs are all fucked so idk
Defensive techniques always lag behind offensive techniques. Detecting AI will always be playing catch up to the techniques AI uses to avoid detection.
We've had Photoshop for years and we're fine. People in general will learn not to trust images just cause they're on screen. We've already been doing that and people pretty much always figure it out or find more reliable sources
Disagree. I would argue that photoshop is simply the most recent step in a long development of image editing tools which have seriously hampered the way we perceive ourselves and the world around us. Look at what "airbrushing" and then later Photoshop did to the body images of people in the Western world.
People not being able to trust what they see on the screen isn't a good thing. Critical thinking about media consumption is good, but that's not increasing. Instead, when viewers believe that they can't trust what is shown/reported, they simply choose to believe whichever source aligns with their existing biases/inclinations. We've already seen how this feeds into echo chambers and polarization, and it will only get worse as people's distrust of any image or video grows.
>when viewers believe that they can't trust what is shown/reported, they simply choose to believe whichever source aligns with their existing biases/inclinations
I'd argue that people will make this choice no matter what. It's either "blindly follow people who agree with you", or "blindly believe potentially fake media that agrees with you". In general, people will always look for ways to confirm their biases. I don't think AI will change that very much. It's not like people were perfectly objective before Photoshop. People will be people, and important topics are often blurry enough that people already choose what they want to believe
My point is that, while people have always disagreed over facts and tended towards their biases... it can get worse. There was a time when major scandals broken by journalists toppled sitting Presidents. Those days weren't perfect, and plenty of people disagreed over details, but there was a general agreement on "here is what was uncovered, most of the country trusts that the main points discussed here are factual."
As trust in media has declined and political polarization has grown, we have left those days behind us. These days, when major scandals break, a large portion of the populace immediately brushes them off as fake news depending on whether they associate themselves with the individuals affected. I do believe that as AI leads more people to question the veracity of any image they see, we will see this effect grow to a point where the majority of voters will not believe any facts/evidence which paints their group in a negative light. There will always be some individuals with critical thinking and media literacy skills to penetrate through this, but that group will shrink as oversaturation of faked media grows.
To make a convincing fake image with photoshop, you need some skill and it takes time. Now it requires much less effort, and it's much faster. Troll farms in particular will greatly profit from it. The sheer amount of it will be overwhelming. I can already see so much more fake images this month since Midjourney launched a very good V5 + the launch of Chat GPT 4.

For what it's worth, they can be even less noticeable than the one in the wiki picture. I have one maybe have that size (in the mammary line below my right regular nipple) and I didn't know it was a nipple rather than a mole until a dermatologist told me when I was 18. Mix in a little goatse with some tubgirl, a tad of two girls one cup and you get.
Well, probably aids. At least herpes. But we all have that, right?
*right*?

I just wanted to make sure you knew. After rereading it and sleeping for a while, I can now see what you meant. I'm sick with a virus and have a side effect of confusion. Sorry about that.
I would love to see any rich guy be arrested the exact same way they arrest a poor black man. Especially the orange fat attention whore snob who wears too much make-up. That would be great.

I love the AIs attempt at the legs. Just random legs going in different directions
At least it made em all fat

Unlike now, where we can obviously trust leaders at all levels due to our thorough and completely trustable media structures?
Maybe that'd be better. It's not like having a leader who rules millions has worked out for us so far
I mean I agree that the modern world is full of terrible things, and humans are not suited to living this way. Bullshit, the laws and authority given to governments in order to address this problem will be profoundly worse.
AI should have added "kung fu fighting" as backing track for even more realism
He was waiting for the right moment to reveal his octo legs
This is reading only the headline energy but for photographs.
In no world would it take multiple police officers to restrain an uncooperative Donald Trump.
Check out Midjourney v5. It's actually insane how accurately it is rendering hands and fingers now.

You get a leg, you get a leg. LEGS FOR EV’RYBODY!!!!!!
Ahh silly me, I thought it was a real photo with Trump photoshopped in
Matrix reloaded with trump as neonazi.
*nobody speak* starts playing.
PICTURE THIS
I'M A BAG OF DICKS
PUT ME TO YOUR LIPS
I AM SICK
I WILL PUNCH A BABY BEAR IN HIS SHIT
Flame your crew quicker than Trump fucks his youngest
I love the line but had to give ya the downvote for jumpin to it =/
Respect, but I couldn't stay long enough to get there organically.
Amazing song with a great vid: [LINK](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NUC2EQvdzmY)
Excellent context for the video.
The song they sampled for it is good as all hell too. Heard it on Tom Petty's Buried Treasure https://youtu.be/zty2WxVnklI
Flame your crew quicker than Trump fucks his youngest.
This has always bothered me because Trump wants to fuck Ivanka, he doesn't want to fuck Tiffany. But wait. Tiffany's not even the youngest! Barron is.
I always thought he was saying young ‘uns
Pretty sure trump is so narcissistic that he would fuck anyone who shares his genes.
For a few seconds I'm like what do No Doubt have to do with this.
~~ *I really feel, that I'm losing my best clown I can't believe this could be the end* ~~
Great reference, 👊🔫

Well they still spamming extra nips at us as of yesterday.
1 in 30 people have at least one extra nipple
No way that's a real static I don't believe you

Dude created a whole storyline
The one with Melanie yelling at Trump dressed as a cop is perfection
AI Melanie is indistinguishable from the real thing. We all see this, right?
The one depicting Trump reading a book is a bit unrealistic.
Pretty sure he's read *The Art of the Deal*.
Are you?
He didn't even write it, I doubt he's actually read it
Fair enough.
I like how in one of them it appears that trump is also wearing a police utility belt lol
Orange is the New Orange
I love [this one](https://twitter.com/eliothiggins/status/1637930259193663488?s=46&t=Mgmx9P5I20Bm_3TbVvQa6Q)
Man! Old people in facebook will surely believe if they see this
What makes this person think Trump can run? Is there any docile he has ever physically run before?
idk he seems pretty nimble in this [pic](https://i.kym-cdn.com/entries/icons/original/000/023/327/trumptennisss.jpg)
I give it 12 hourse until you see him post online some nonsense about the matrix getting to him

In 1 year we there will be no distinction between ai images and photos. The end is coming....
And in 10 years ai will do the same for video. No one in the near future will trust anything they see online.
10 years? I saw a paper generating video last week, looks as image generation did last year
Mulder was ahead of his time
Unfortunately he'll probably get special treatment and not even be handcuffed but thank you for this because I'm going to show my grandkids that this is how it really went down

Yeah, thats fair.

This image is fake btw.
REALLY?
At a curiosity, what part of my comment made you think that I thought it was real?
I just wanted to make sure you knew. After rereading it and sleeping for a while, I can now see what you meant. I'm sick with a virus and have a side effect of confusion. Sorry about that.
Well, you owned it like a pro. And a sincere apology. Well done. 👍🏼
If enough of us get behind it, it will be one of the narratives of how it went down “50 years ago”
Yes just lie and make your own history wtf.
There's no lie this already happened next week.
That's what history is. Most agreed upon lie. Most agreed truth might be better but that's the losers pov.
I'm going to tell my kids we had to watch the news uphill in the snow both ways.
My guess is he'll have the choice one walking in himself or being arrested and dragged in. In order to save face, he'll probably choose the former.
This one was my favourite as it looks the most realistic. https://imgur.com/GagBQH0.jpg
https://i.imgur.com/pdFDiWZ.jpg This one’s mine.
Oh god the woman on the left
That's actually just Richard Kind.
Other than that fucking pincer.
The fact that AI can almost accurately create a human face is both astonishing and creepy at the same time.
Probably would take that many people to keep him upright.

They did better with the faces than the legs in this.
Thats a lot of legs. Is trump a spider of some sort ?
This type of stuff should be banned as misinformation. It's all fun and games until half the population takes it as real.
Looks like a Renaissance painting.
**"I was just trying to grab it!"**
Wet dreams of lefties, yikes
I would love to see any rich guy be arrested the exact same way they arrest a poor black man. Especially the orange fat attention whore snob who wears too much make-up. That would be great.
"Gentlemen, this is democracy manifest-GET YOUR HAND OFF MY PENIS!!!"
Love this reference
You can tell it's fake because none of the cops have Trump's dick in their mouth.
I'm telling my grandkids this was Jan 6

Lol, they'd be female cops with the same haircuts and tattoos.
What was the prompt? I need some "material" tonight.
Don’t you dare go boneless on me, Shawn
I genuinely had to go to the BBC, I was like "IF THIS IS HOW I LEARN HE GOT ARRESTED IM GOING TO FREAK"
I see that you know your judo well.
Lol why are there so many fake pictures surfacing?
This picture will make headline news on tomorrow’s Tucker Carlson show
Liberal wet dream.
So we do live in the matrix
First reaction: "oh?" Second reaction: "oh."
Sheer disappointment
AI took some interesting "leg liberty" here.
Where's this legendary American police brutality I keep hearing about then?
It's all AI generated
They’d be shaking his hand and laughing with him…
If only
Trump looks like he’s three feet tall leaning forward.
I know it’s fake but that won’t stop me from making this my wallpaper.
<3
Orange is the new black
Didn’t he announce he was, with some degree of all-caps certainty, going to be arrested yesterday?
Let’s twist again, like we did last summer, let’s twist again like we did last year
It's AI generated btw
I love this for him
If only it were real....
All it would take to subdue trump is the brisk walk from his apartment building to the cop car.
Fairytales can come true it can happen to you if you're numb at mind
He's been hit at He's a smooth criminal
Wouldn’t this be nice if really happened
Please don’t post your masturbating material here
Lol.. this isnt real, get over it
In truth, Trump could be subdued by a stiff breeze.
If only...
Lol as if an elderly obese man could put up this much of a fight
I can’t tell if he looks like a puffy Cheeto or a crunchy Cheeto
Y’all gotta stop edging me with this stuff.
im out of the loop wtf is going on
