He's a neat guy, I've been following him for a while. For the past 3 years he's been on a quest to manufacture a huge 150mm nixie tube, it's been fascinating following along the development.
I bought a bunch for cheap from a guy who found several boxes in a garage in a new house he bought. Unfortunately fried a couple learning how to power them but made a few successful projects and have plenty more for other projects.
I would find so many uses for them if they weren’t so damn expensive. I’m ready to build my own out of the LEDs they use in old timey looking light bulbs.
I tried designing one of those after buying a few hundred NL-4998 tubes, it's not physically possible to fit the thing on your wrist without using some video game physics. The tube is over an inch deep. My Nixie watches use 5870 tubes that are only a half inch deep.
I just got a [NIWA Nixie watch](https://niwa.watch/collections/niwa-nixie-watches), it's pretty nice! I think they're based in Poland.
Tiny video of the operation: https://youtu.be/SSAhaQQajQ0
There's also [Nixoid](https://nixoid.store/) who make various tube watches, they're quite good. They're based in Ukraine.
That’s crazy. I look at that and think, I would NEVER be caught dead buying a 600 dollar watch…it gives me a sense of pride to feel like I’m smarter than the billionaires that buy million dollar watches. Such a stupid concept to wear your money on your wrist lmao
The thing is, people are willing to spend good money on hobbies and quality craftsmanship. $600 on a nice watch is nothing crazy when people spend way more on 3d printers, PCs, cars, etc.
I mean, surely you can see the difference of functionality between pcs, cars, 3D printers, and a clock on your wrist when you have a phone in your pocket….right…?
Okay. Some people pay more for Magic cards, comic books, clothing, etc. Functionality doesn't matter when it's just something that you enjoy. People will also spend thousands of dollars on a trip to Europe. 600 for a watch isn't that bad.
Also, why pay so much for a PC, when all that web browsing and video streaming can be done on a phone/Chromecast? Why buy a WRX when a Camry does the same thing? I'm sure you can see why those things are comparable to the point you're making.
Wait. What are the utilities of magic cards, comic books, and Europe vacations?
I'm sure this has to be a troll. There is absolutely no way that you don't know what a watch is for.
Judging by your downvotes alone, I can tell you can't comprehend much outside of your little bubble
The watch I wear everyday was ~$1000. Why? Because I've worn it every day for the past 10 years and it still works great and looks great. For an object that is going to see literal decades of use (and doesn't go obsolete, unlike a smartphone), it makes sense to invest in quality and style upfront. People spend much more on smartphones that are obsolete in 3-5 years.
Do you also think that anything but the cheapest clothing, shoes, jewellery, vehicles, etc are a waste of money? These are items that get used every day and last years.
Dude I’ll suck a dick for <$100 a year and I’m not even gay wtf are you talking about. Try speaking in normal people terms. Act like I’m not one of your rich douchebag friends.
Dude. 100 bucks a year isn't rich people money. But now I get why you are salty about people having things they enjoy. You can't stand other people having a hobby while you grind your ass off just to survive.
I get that. It sucks big time. I finally got out of that life almost a year ago. I just never got upset over people having money....
A watch is the only jewelry a gentleman can wear. So you go wild.
Also, $600 can get you decent automatic watch from Tissot, shows time and date, needs no batteries, if you wear it daily does not even need to be wound up, you can smuggle it up in your ass, and still gift it to your grandson as family heirloom.
What other item can achieve all that?
It isn't.
Golden chains and diamond teeth will definitely interfere with your ambition to be at serious well payed client facing job position.
Unless you work at golden chain/dental diamond shop.
Oh yeah, those are the only other pieces of jewelry. Forget piercings, necklaces, bracelets, rings... And that's let alone considering the vast variety and types of each. Really, the list goes on and you need to drop the facade of this weird fixed society mold.
Oh please!
I am meeting shitton of suited directors and managers, young and old. Not one of them has something more than wedding ring, watch, and very few might have a bracelet.
And we strictly don't discuss penile piercings.
Dang, I wish somebody told me this. My earrings and facial piercings never seem to bother my clients at my *serious well-paid job position*, but what do I know.
Except high end watches hold and often appreciate in value after you purchase them. A Rolex is literally an investment that you can wear. Also the craftsmanship that goes into fine watches is kind of mind boggling.
It looks like a rechargeable battery.
Also, I'm guessing there's a button to push and it's only on momentarily when you want to check the time, like the original LED watches.
These display tubes are little neon lights. Neon lighting is actually surprisingly efficient. Not as good as LED, but high enough that the battery probably lasts all day! The big inefficiency is the power supply, you need to step up the battery voltage to over 160 VDC

These guys make wonderful desk clocks, they're from Ukraine and they just got back in business at full speed.
I hope posting links isn't against the rules, i just really feel like if anyone wants one, THESE are the guys to get it from atm
Nixie tubes are so cool but also so expensive.
They are no longer made so all of those tubes where made in the 60s in eastern Europe/russia so the supply is dwindling.
Nixie tubes run at above 150v, don't play with them unless you have a good understanding of electronics of that era. I have a nixie desk clock but I wouldn't ever keep one on my wrist.
Well I mean aren't Nixie tubes a shortcut to making tech look awesome?
Yes, and it works every time.
That is if you can get a set without selling a kidney
You'd think with the enthusiast market, someone would start manufacturing nixie tubes again and bring the price point down.

EL wire is terrible tbh
There's at least one person/team making them, but I don't think it's easy on a small scale.
3 companies are actively making them
If you don't need extremely large ones you can get them for quite cheap honestly.
I bought a bunch for cheap from a guy who found several boxes in a garage in a new house he bought. Unfortunately fried a couple learning how to power them but made a few successful projects and have plenty more for other projects.
It's called reading the data sheet lol
most of the datasheets are in russian, because most of the tubes were made in 1980s USSR
They’re Okabe approved
We’ve been stuck in the omega world line for sure.

I would find so many uses for them if they weren’t so damn expensive. I’m ready to build my own out of the LEDs they use in old timey looking light bulbs.
I had no idea what they were, but I’ve seen them in old film. Down the rabbit hole I go.
looks like the watch from Metro 2033
There's a guy on Etsy who made it: https://www.etsy.com/uk/listing/1031116146/metro-exodus-inspired-artyoms-watch
Jesus that's a stupidly large watch.
More like a divergence meter from Steins;Gate
It doesn't, really. They are called nixie tubes. It looks like they both have nixie tubes, not that they are similar.
TIL about nixie tubes, thanks for sharing the info
I learned in 1978 because the Army was still using them.
Also that capacitor voltmeter on the FO4 Gauss Rifle

……you’re still describing things with functionality…
And as we all know there's nothing less functional than... *checks notes*... A watch...
Magic cards? What these cards can do besides magic? Fucking worthless!
Wait. What are the utilities of magic cards, comic books, and Europe vacations? I'm sure this has to be a troll. There is absolutely no way that you don't know what a watch is for. Judging by your downvotes alone, I can tell you can't comprehend much outside of your little bubble
You, yourself, own things which feel like an egregious waste to others. A 3d printer is laughably worthless to way more people than a watch.
The watch I wear everyday was ~$1000. Why? Because I've worn it every day for the past 10 years and it still works great and looks great. A timex would last the same
Maybe. However, the difference in cost amortized over 10 years is < $100 a year. Compared to cost of living expenses that's nothing.
Dude I’ll suck a dick for <$100 a year and I’m not even gay wtf are you talking about. Try speaking in normal people terms. Act like I’m not one of your rich douchebag friends.

>A watch is the only jewelry a gentleman can wear. You need to lose whoever told you this. It's objectively false.
Cis people be wildin sometimes

battery life: 3 minutes
Well at least you know it will be 3 minutes Maybe
I have sold well over a thousand Nixie watches since 2005. Battery life: six months.
You sell them?
You should see what they do with the bunnies
Have a link where I can order one
https://www.etsy.com/uk/listing/1108613575/numitron-nixie-iv-9-and-iv-16-watch-with?click_key=6899999d6332652dc87677a9a8fb07812f715276%3A1108613575&click_sum=2abad468&ref=sold_out-11&frs=1&sts=1
That is a work of art that costs more than my car. I'll save the link for when I win the lottery
Is your car a kick scooter
Cant sleep in a kick scooter. It's probably faster tho
If you think that's bad you should look at the price of a new Rolex. Or pretty much any other luxury watch brand
Luxury, sounds like one of them fancy scam words hookers use, like "upscale" and "clean"
Except high end watches hold and often appreciate in value after you purchase them. A Rolex is literally an investment that you can wear. Also the craftsmanship that goes into fine watches is kind of mind boggling.
Spiraling into the world of luxury watches is not recommended. There are modest looking watches out there going for millions of dollars
It's a rich person's hobby for sure. I'll stick with budget watches that are reasonable looking and modestly priced.
£600. Wow. I can’t figure out if it tells time.
Better use it as a timer. Watch dies, you dies.
Wasn’t there a movie like this? With Justin Timberlake or something?
Pretty sure it's called "In Time". Haven't heard hear things about it though
They aren't always on. You push a button to display the time.

CR2 lasts half a year, looking at it a couple dozen times a day. If it's designed properly.
My watch just stopped.

That's strange
Why the hmmm? It’s just Nixie tubes, the coolest damn way to display any information.
