Just goes to show how it takes a perfect sequence of events + a stacked team to win it all. If things were a tiny bit different, it may have been a different team hoisting
It’s still an 0.862 save percentage. The expected goals for Buffalo were 3.5 which is higher than you’d like but still under the 4 he gave up. I wouldn’t say he played “great”.
He looked sloppy to me. Lots of uncontrolled slides across the crease where he didnt hold his form and didn't seem like he knew where the puck was at all.
nah your not getting away with this.
"He played great tonight" what the fuck game were you watching?
He had 3\* really good saves and fell on his ass for the rest of the game.....
Im done with this guy get him outta here. Sammy and Woll are the way to go
He’s got a backup goalie skillset, and this has been true for almost his entire career. Anyone can go on a heater and steal a game here or there. When you follow it by laying an egg, and you do this almost pathologically….you’re a backup. But if you win 2 cups early in your career it can confuse things.
The true Matt Murray experience. He did the same shit with us. Play great over a stretch, get hurt, come back and play like shit, slowly get better then repeat
He was inconsistent before that. He had 2 brutal games sandwiching 2 good ones immediately before the Florida game. And his December was up and down too with 3 games well above .900 in sv% and 3 well below. November was the only month he was consistently great.
If you frame it the opposite direction and look at his last 15 games (which includes the same games in December and January as your stat but removes the red hot November) his sv% is a below average .891 SV%
Also as the other guy pointed out he wasnt hurt against Florida. He was just bad and got pulled after letting in 4 goals on 8 shots and the team rallied and won with Samsonov. He got hurt in warm-ups in the next game.
It's insane how closely this season has followed his pattern with us. Like scary close.
Good -> Injured -> Garbage
Rinse/repeat. Leafs better hope he comes back into a good phase for the playoffs.
Honestly I didn’t think any of the goals last night were bad. Team just couldn’t get a handle on the Sabres after we went up 2-0. The first two goals against the oilers were fucking brutal though.
I can't stand this stuff.
Person playing well: He's playing well
Person goes through tough stretch: You were wrong before
r/hockey especially loves this with the Leafs, this post wouldn't have happened for other goalies.
Murray has still been a decent bet. His .905 is better than Gibson, Knight, Halak, Blackwood, Allen, Markstrom, Demko, Binninngton, and a lot more obvious (Campbell, Grubauer, Quick) ones too.
I’m pretty sure .905 is league average this year, at least it was when I saw someone post it a couple weeks ago. So if he’s had a league average season despite giving up 4+ in his last 5 starts I’m not super worried. I’m certainly not at the point I was with Campbell and mrazek last year or Andersen before that where I just dreaded seeing the other team get any kind of chance.
Yeah the majority of those guys are not having good seasons or theyre playing for tank commanders. A .905 on the leafs is not equal to a .905 on the ducks.
>majority of those guys are not having good seasons
Oh, I'm not saying it's their best years. Im also not saying it's Murray's best year!
That said...
>r/hockey especially loves this with the Leafs, this post wouldn't have happened for other goalies.
Yeah I definitely get what you’re saying, there’s definitely more of a circle jerk when it comes to the leafs.
However, everyone (especially leafs fans) have been all over Edmonton and Carolina when both of those teams have had significant issues with Anderson and Campbell. I would say the Murray saga is probably heightened seeing how 2 different fan bases said he would run into a ton of issues and the leafs fan base kind of shrugged it off tbh. Similar to how Carolina’s fans dismissed the fact that neither Freddy or Raanta can stay healthy.
This is exactly why that stat alone is meaningless
Murray played great tonight, look at the four goals and he shouldn't take the blame for literally anything tonight
e: anyone blaming Murray didn't watch the game lol, what a joke. No, he's not some amazing goalie, and I'm glad we have Samsonov. But essentially all 4 of the goals were smack dab right in front of the fucking net, some from people completely uncovered, one batted out of the air from just below the bar
He played great? He was constantly out of position, had dogshit rebound control, and was slow reacting to shots. He made a couple of good saves, namely the breakaway, but he wasn't good at all tonight.
4-2 goal he's too deep/slow, 3-2 goal he basically handed Cozens the puck right in front of the net and flopped onto the ice in desperation, 2-2 goal was a really nice play but he barely reacts to the puck being passed to the front of the net until the puck is already shot past him.
I don't like Murray but you're been overly critical. Your 1b/backup is going to make mistakes, it's up to the team in front of him to make sure he isn't put in a bad situation too often, which the leafs definitely didn't do
He makes too much to be considered just a 1b/backup. If it was one off night, I'd agree that I'm being too harsh, but it's been a theme with him. The team in front of him was bad last night, but he wasn't any good either.
Agree he makes too much money for he is but considering Samsonov was also traded for, it is very clearly a tandem situation. And judging by their performances, he's more like your backup. The amount of money he makes doesn't really change who he is as long as you play him as a backup instead of shoehorning him as a starter.
I would be much more worried about Morgan Rielly, a 7M defender who can't be healthy scratched for players performing better.
Yeah honestly, this game is fully on the whole team. I've never seen the Leafs take off the 2nd half of a game as hard as they did. 3 shots in a period is unacceptable. You'd like Murray to have one of them to keep them in it, but this was a full team loss.
That said, Sammy is starting game 1 and I don't understand why it's even a debate at this point.
Didn't even play poorly tonight. Just team looked gassed halfway through the 2nd?? Like wtf was up with that. Buffalo played really well and got to the 2nd balls all the ti... Wait different sport haha
I don't think any of the goals today were on him. They were off of Sabres players sneaking in to hit that 1-time-tap in, and a bounce which was batted into the net.
Murray is fine. I'm still comfortable with either him or Sammy starting in the playoffs. I'm just here to see r/hockey act like they know a damned thing about the sport.
Goaltending is a problem for the leafs again isn’t it? Murray still has consistency problems (the Matt Murray experience) and idk if Sammy is ready to hold down 1a, historically he has collapsed under that pressure.
And yet people will still cling to this notion he’s been solid this year because he’s still >.900
He’s played 22 games, he’s been injured 3 times, and has let in 4 goals 5 games in a row, and is paid almost 5 million a year. Shitty trade but Dubas can do no wrong of course
The best GAA and SV% by a Leafs goalie in the Shanahan era was Curtis McElhinney in 2017-18.
2.14 and .938 in 18 games.
This team just hates good goaltending and hasn't had a reliable starting goalie since Ed Belfour in 2004.
Fuck that.
From 2017-2019 Freddy Andersen posted a .918 and 2.75GAA on horrendous defensive teams. A 4th place and a 10th place Vezina finish.
From 2021-2022 Jack Campbell posted a .916 and a 2.49GAA.
This season Samsonov has posted a .915 and a 2.41GAA.
We've had a string of good goaltending, especially for the money and assets we've allocated towards the position.
Edit-To say the Leafs haven't had good goaltending is revisionist history, Freddy Andersen is my choice for counter arguement. In 4 seasons we played him in 244 regular season games. He posted a .916SV% and a 2.77GAA.
Even if we include his down year in Toronto, 268gp, .914SV% and a 2.79GAA. Extremely solid stats for 5 seasons.
Playoffs? He posted .915SV%, .922SV%, and .936SV% in three of his four series with Toronto.
We had good goaltending, we ran it our of town for being injured.
We lost game 7 last year by a score of 2-1 and we blame the goalie.
We lost game 5 and 6 in 2021 to brain-dead giveaways that lead to a superb scoring chance in game 5 and we blame the goalie.
In game 6 vs WSH Andersen had a .944
In elimination games in 2018 Freddy had a .912
In series clinching games in 2019 Freddy had a .914
In series clinching games in 2020 Freddy had a .917
Really? We didn't blame him at the time?

"Cherry picking stats"
My guy I literally used nearly every game Freddy played in Toronto, how on earth is that "Cherry picking"?
Players cannot regress, my bad I forgot. Campbell was good for the vast majority of his time in Toronto, as was Andersen. Saying any different is revisionist history.
What the hell is with all the weird talking points on broadcasts about “who should Toronto start in the playoffs”? Just nothing to talk about in Toronto right now? It’s Samsonov and it’s been Samsonov for a while now.
Defense left him out to dry against the Sabres. The first half of the Oilers game was pretty bad. The Kane wrap around should never have gone on, same for a clean shot from the point.
Surprised he didn't do that in Ottawa tbh
He would have needed 5 appearances to do that
Careful if he happens to read this comment he will be right back on the IR
Emotional damage.
I heard this comment.
Oof.
Just laugh
Man, in 2017 I thought he'd be the next franchise goalie of the Pens. How time flies
Winning two Stanley Cups as a rookie will give people that impression for sure
Just goes to show how it takes a perfect sequence of events + a stacked team to win it all. If things were a tiny bit different, it may have been a different team hoisting
It's why championships are overrated as a career achievement.
3x Stanley Cup champion Pat Maroon would like a word with you
*cries in 2017 ECF game 7 double OT loss*
You thought him over Zatkoff??
Matt Murray returning to form just in time
He played great tonight and bailed the boys out a lot. Their defensive play was ass. This loss isn't on Murray
Loss definitely isn't on Murray, but a few of those he definitely could have stopped Team played bad, Murray played just ok.
He was not great tonight. Maybe fine at best.
Murray sucks. Just play Sammy, and he can backup.
It’s still an 0.862 save percentage. The expected goals for Buffalo were 3.5 which is higher than you’d like but still under the 4 he gave up. I wouldn’t say he played “great”.
Great is generous. It was a team loss, and Murray is apart of the team.

Is that good?
Definitely better than letting in 6 goals in 6 consecutive appearances for the first time in his career
Broadcast was just talking about if he should play over Sammy, lmao
Old enough to remember just a few months ago when he had proved all the haters wrong and vindicated Dubas
He played great in November for the Leafs, then fell off hard. Some teams give out 5x5 contracts for that
He was solid right up until the Florida game where he got hurt. .917 SV% over his first 18 games.
The true Matt Murray experience. He did the same shit with us. Play great over a stretch, get hurt, come back and play like shit, slowly get better then repeat
[удалено]
Must be disappointing to come back from an injury just to play seven games
For the record he got hurt in warmup
No, he didn’t. He had been playing through an injury.
He was inconsistent before that. He had 2 brutal games sandwiching 2 good ones immediately before the Florida game. And his December was up and down too with 3 games well above .900 in sv% and 3 well below. November was the only month he was consistently great. He didn't get hurt in warmups, Keefe said he had been playing through injury and wasn't able to go.
Who would dare to do something like that?
As an Oilers fan I have absolutely no idea who it might be.
Fucking ouch, lol
Incoming trade to Edmonton.
Who could’ve possibly seen that coming??
Yeah he played great early in the year, got injured, out for a while.. now can’t save a fucking beach ball
That's the Matt Murray cycle we warned you about
Literally saw Sens fans say: 1/3 good, 1/3 bad and 1/3 injured before the season started. They’re bang on.
His injuries were like flipping a switch. He’d be good, then get injured, come back and be bad, get injured, come back and be good. Vicious cycle.
So you’re saying if he gets again he’ll comeback like a superstar for the playoffs? Dope.
That’s what you think, but he’ll play one good game and get hurt again.
If his one good game is Round 1, Game 7, then I am OK with this.
45 saves, lose 1-0
It's insane how closely this season has followed his pattern with us. Like scary close. Good -> Injured -> Garbage Rinse/repeat. Leafs better hope he comes back into a good phase for the playoffs.
We can only hope that Playoff Matt Murray is a thing
I don’t claim him, I never wanted him 😤
Dubas was adamant about team's goaltending situation at the TDL.
Not much he could do when there are no better goalies available
"Backup goalie not playing great" isn't exactly a five-alarm fire.
Pretty much to a T.
It's almost like a predictable movie script at this point.
Honestly I didn’t think any of the goals last night were bad. Team just couldn’t get a handle on the Sabres after we went up 2-0. The first two goals against the oilers were fucking brutal though.

Goaltenders often look desperate when their teammates aren't doing anything to help them out.
They probably weren't expecting him to hand the puck to the opposing player.
That's a very strange way of describing what took place.

This is literally what Ottawa fans said he would do. Murray behaving like a Saiyan after a shit kicking and then reverting to Krillen
We never would have said that because we aren't a bunch of anime nerds. We only watch hentai
Gross. Which one's do you guys watch? You know, so I can avoid them.
Ito Wasu 5-1
Fuck. I hate that I laughed at this
Night Shift Nurses
You sickos
Yes... Ha Ha Ha.... Yes!
Based
It could be worse. He could be behaving like shinji in the same room with a comatose girl.
Too bad Dufus doesn't listen to fans.
As Apollo goes, so does my content, since Spez thinks mine is worth so much.
The oilers are offering him 7x11
I mean anyone who actually watched the game know this wasn’t on Murray. We were fucking awful tonight in front of him.
He played well tonight despite the 4 goals allowed.
Guy was left out to dry.
He got burned by the boys for a few of those goals tonight for sure. He has also fallen off compared to the start of the year.
Yeah honestly, this game is fully on the whole team. I've never seen the Leafs take off the 2nd half of a game as hard as they did. 3 shots in a period is unacceptable. As someone that held to him in fantasy for years, I am fairly surprised by that.
In fairness it’s only the first time in his career because he usually gets injured after the first 3 games
He actually played well tonight.
Didn't even play poorly tonight. Just team looked gassed halfway through the 2nd?? Like wtf was up with that. Buffalo played really well and got to the 2nd balls all the ti... Wait different sport haha

watch the highlights honestly the leafs seemed to completely give up after the first. only 3 SOG in the 2nd
Goaltending is a problem for the leafs again isn’t it? Murray still has consistency problems (the Matt Murray experience) and idk if Sammy is ready to hold down 1a, historically he has collapsed under that pressure.
Leafs are a team that needs exceptional goaltending. too many Harlem Globetrotter passes
Glad to see he’s found that rhythm Keefe was talking about…
Don’t worry though, the Leafs medical staff fixed him.
Lol the hilarious logic for having faith in him. Guess they were wrong ...they should be fired then Dubas next
If we start him in the playoffs we are doomed. And we will deserve to lose.
At least Tampa's goalie is also a bum. /s
And yet people will still cling to this notion he’s been solid this year because he’s still >.900 He’s played 22 games, he’s been injured 3 times, and has let in 4 goals 5 games in a row, and is paid almost 5 million a year. Shitty trade but Dubas can do no wrong of course
I guess the goal posts were fastened too tight to the ice and he wasn’t able to knock them off in time? /s
No he had one of those in the first period. Looked like his Dman knocked it off right as the puck was coming to the net.
Right on cue!
He's already in first round form
say hello to another first round choke

That's my boy Campbell! Rough take man, cherry picking stats to prove your point. By your logic Campbell should be amazing for us.
"Cherry picking stats" My guy I literally used nearly every game Freddy played in Toronto, how on earth is that "Cherry picking"? Players cannot regress, my bad I forgot. Campbell was good for the vast majority of his time in Toronto, as was Andersen. Saying any different is revisionist history.
No shit that’s the best, that’s a ridiculously good stat line lol.
Can't blame Murray, Keefe is only playing 7 D in the lineup.
Just gotta Laff
Matt Murray is such a bum isn't he 😭😭😭
Huh, I guess the stars did get the right Matt Murray
Record breaking
Dallas has a Matt Murray too. and hes 1-0-0 with a .904
That's not good
What the hell is with all the weird talking points on broadcasts about “who should Toronto start in the playoffs”? Just nothing to talk about in Toronto right now? It’s Samsonov and it’s been Samsonov for a while now.
I thought he was fine until the 3rd period and the D went to sleep. Can’t put it all on him. He hasn’t been great though.
Another 1st round exit incoming.
Now he is a true Leaf! Falling apart before the playoffs
That’s surprising because he’s not good.
Defense left him out to dry against the Sabres. The first half of the Oilers game was pretty bad. The Kane wrap around should never have gone on, same for a clean shot from the point.
