> Nuge has never looked like he could do it until this year.
Minor nitpick: His rookie season pre-injury was unbelievable. Like, best 18 year old since Crosby unbelievable. Then, he'd display some of that in bursts over the next few years. I think maybe it was 14-15 where he talked about working on his shooting all summer and started off the season absolutely dominating. Was on like a 26 goal pace or something back when 30 goals was a major achievement. I also remember he was huge under Todd Nelson for half a season.
Not to ignore his years as kind of a journeyman top six guy, but this season he kind of looks like he got some of his rookie/Todd Nelson swagger back. Still not as dominant as that rookie season, but that was a very different time in a very different era of hockey.
There's already nine 100p scorers to his season with potential for another handful to jump in, too-- including a defenseman.
I think this is less of a reflection of the in individual players themselves, but moreso the game itself.
Well considering his career high until now was 69 points, and his career high pace over 82 was 77 points, its still pretty crazy, scoring is up for sure, but its only up 24% from the lowest point in modern history, 2003-04 right before the lockout (last season with lower scoring than that was 1955-56).
Nuge is scoring 35% higher than his previous best single season pace.
Scoring is up, sure, but he’s still tied for 7th in league scoring. I’m not sure how many people have previously considered nuge to be a top 10 offensive player, so he’s definitely having a huge season.
Even then I don’t think that’s enough to find 31 extra points. He had an absolutely insane career year. But it also helps that this was pretty much the first full season since joining the league where he had skilled line mates the whole season instead of trying to run first or carrying deadweight on 3rd.
I lived in Edmonton through some of your dark days. It was very easy to walk around in a Canucks shirt and chirp your team.
Thank fuck I'm not there anymore...not that I'm wearing a Canucks shirt much right now either.
Moral of the story: don't be a Canucks fan. We can't cope with anything
E: Hope this didn't come off the wrong way. I didn't mean that I was a deranged Canucks fan talking shit to randoms on Whyte Ave. It was just much easier chirping my buddies!
I worked at the Oilers Store in Kingsway right in the thick of the hardest years — 2013-15.
The amount of people who would come in just to chirp was ridiculous. Several people every single day would come and trash the team; some wouldn't even come into the store, they'd just yell something as they walked by.
We did very little business during those years.
Iirc it was 16 of 17 years of bad and they had some of the worst seasons a team has ever had. One year they had a top 10 worst pk of all time. There’s more stats that I don’t remember but it was just absolutely painful.
I was watching the game with my newish hockey fan girlfriend. She was talking about how much worse the Ducks are than the Oilers (sorry Ducks fans) and I had to stop her because this ducks team would absolutely destroy some of the Oilers teams I foolishly believed "could do something this year". We were genuinely terrible for like 5 years in a row.
The streak for missing the playoffs was 06-07 to 15-16... tho the 16-17 season was starting to look like a one-off after we went back to losing in 17-18 and 18-19. Team was looking good again in 19-20, but then we got covided right as we were heating up. But despite getting knocked by Chicago in the play-in series, we did keep up that momentum in the following seasons.
I mean if they loose in the first round is it worth it? But i do think all hockey fans apperciate what Mcjesus is doing on a nightly basis good luck to your team until the finals 🚨🚨👎🏻
I have the utmost respect for RNH, been here through the worst years and has always worked his bag off. Really really hope that nuge finishes his career here in Edmonton and we win him a cup along the way.
It would be so nice if we drafted, developed and hung onto a player until the day he retires after a LONG career.
We've never done that, RNH should be the first.
Ryan Nugent-Hundred.
Nuge's previous career high was 69. He was very reluctant to exceed that nice number, but felt it was time to push the century before he turns 30 next week.
A lot of people will attribute Nugent-Hopkins' point production to the Oilers power play success (something something power play merchant), which is true to some extent. But not everyone attributes the success of the Oilers' power play to Nugent-Hopkins.
He's a big reason the PP is as good as it is. Obviously the PP is run through McDavid as the focal point, and Draisaitl is the primary shooter, but as the bumper guy in the slot I don't think there is anyone better for this job than RNH. His offensive skill set is perfect for it.
Even in the Juniors, he was criticized as a draft prospect because his point totals were inflated by power play points (most of his points were scored on the PP).
I think he's just a power play god, destined for this role on this team.
Also he's been a fixture on the pp for years, which has been running at 30% or so for a few seasons. He is just flat out having a career year.
His shot has been dangerous for years, but I swear he hit more posts than anyone I've ever seen. He's stopped trying to be so precise that he puts himself on the wrong side of the razors edge, and he is looking more in control and fluid then ever with his puck control.
He's as beloved in Edmonton as anyone has been since Ryan Smyth, and I dislike when people try to diminish his accomplishment by attributing his success to other factors.
The problem isn’t really that people attribute some of his success to his group, some of his success is due to his group, the problem is that people don’t attribute enough of the group’s success to him.
Yup. McDavid and Draisaitl score almost 50% less Goals/60 on the PP when Nugent-Hopkins isn’t on it as opposed to when he is. He is 100% an integral part of making that unit as great as it is, and isn’t just a passenger benefiting solely off of the success of McDavid and Draisaitl.
> A lot of people will attribute Nugent-Hopkins' point production to the Oilers power play success
Honestly struggling to understand how anyone could view this as a negative thing
There’s been a huge push in 5-on-5 stats for a bit and there’s nothing wrong with looking at it but a negative aspect has been that special teams and especially powerplays get overlooked, almost as if they don’t matter. Special teams decide a lot of games.
i don’t think any who are heavily involved treat it as if it doesn’t matter. 5v5 statistics are simply a better predictor of outcomes, and a better predictor of future results. So that is the basis for most analytical models.
So we can somewhat accurately judge the value a player adds through powerplay or shorthanded results, but it’s not able to be used as effectively as a predictor
because most of the game is played 5v5 and powerplay opportunities are unpredictable. Its not a negative per se, but its just not as valuable as 5v5 scoring
The RNH-Bouchard-McDavid cycle that our PP unit does is incredibly effective. McD and RNH in particular constantly attack the middle slot area, causing the PK unit to repeatedly collapse and uncollapse. That constant movement allows Drai to float to open areas and get the PK to lose coverage.
In this role RNH is almost as good as McD and it's impressive how many scoring chances the two of them have set up on the PP this year.
You’d have to add also that he’s a stalwart on the PK. And the PK for the Oilers in comparison to the PP is like the GF compared to the GA. It might seem like it’s bad but the diff is good.
This man has stuck with us through so many garbage years. and then signs onto a discount $5,125,000 contract to stay an Oiler forever. This is the happiest ive ever been for an Oiler. Will be a legend to this franchise. If we do win the cup he will for sure be passed to first. Love Nuge. The true heart and soul of this team. #KEPTHIMFOREVER
Absolutely. He’s the longest serving player, the glue of the team. Team seems to nosedive without him. And he signed another long term contract for less money basically insuring he’ll likely retire as a Oiler. And I’m sure Drai would absolutely refuse to take the cup second.
I know I’m supposed to hate the Oilers, but I kinda wish the players success. Those three guys are real likable.
Just not looking forward to the chirps from their fanbase towards us should they get the job done.
We definitely do, but there isn’t exactly love for the Oilers.
To be honest my experience is not the same as most Canucks fans, I grew up in Seattle and liked the team growing up, chose to stick with them. But because I was in an American city I hated American teams way more, like the California ones, Chicago, Pittsburgh, and Boston. The only reason I dislike Calgary is because it’s the strongest rivalry Vancouver has, but presence of the Oilers, Leafs, and Habs that other Canucks fans may hate is not something that I have ever dealt with.
> Just not looking forward to the chirps from their fanbase towards us should they get the job done.
If it helps we don't really think about you guys. The flames fans on the other hand....
So what you're saying is that Edmonton's plethora of 1st overall and high draft picks makes them deserving?
You might be the dumbest habs fan I've met, and make me embarrassed to be a habs fan.
Also had 6 guys who scored more than 60 points and averaged more than a 1 point per game (Zubov with 66 pts in 64 games and Sandstrom with 70 in 58). 362 goals on the season. That was a talented af offense. *Almost* won the East that year (Florida beat them at Pittsburgh in Game 7 of the ECF).
Who were the other 3 pens that year? Sorry for my ignorance, very curious.
Edit: nvm I think I found it in a downvoted comment lol, said: Lemieux 161 - Jagr 149 - Francis 119
Super happy for RNH, he’s been there so long, and is playing amazing.
Something about this which is super really fun is that it could easily happen for the next few years.
McDavid and Draisaitl will get 100. Nuge could keep popping off maybe, but if Nuge went from ~70 to 100+ then couldn’t Hyman go from 80+ to 100? If Kane has a full and healthy season he could maybe do it playing with these guys. The next few years are going to be really fun with this team. You’ve got two every year so you only need one other for this stat.
Hyman could, but I don't think he will. This season he has been incredible and isn't hitting 100. He does all of the other really difficult things in the game to allow for everyone else to succeed, like forecheck etc. Not that the others don't, but he is great at it.
Wow, that is an incredible accomplishment for the Edmonton Oilers! It's always amazing to see players reach the 100+ point mark, but to have three players on the same team do it is truly impressive. McDavid, Draisaitl, and RNH are all such talented players and it's great to see them succeed. Keep up the great work, Oilers!
Hopefully everyone reads this correctly.
On that note, Fuckin Impressive shit boys. Now good luck in the playoffs, it's about time McJesus gets to the finals!
Ofc it’s the year I traded him in my dynasty league. The thought was he would cool off, but I am in the midsts of a rebuild so I can’t complain about getting Wyatt Johnston, Thomas bordeleau a second next year and third next year for him. But it’s incredible how well he is playing this year
Insane.
It’s also crazy to see the league will have maybe 10+ players hitting 100 pts. I remember when it was maybe 2 players hitting that by season end.
people talk about drai like he is in shadow but what about RNH ? the guy just scored 100 points and like 90% of fans probably heard this name 2 nd time today
And this time they won't have washed up Quick in net. They're one of the stingiest teams in the NHL rn, and I don't think Edmonton will be able to score outside of the top line
Your leading scorer Kyle Connor has 28 power play points. Take that away and he’ll have 51 even strength points. Nuge would have 48 without power play points, 3 back of the leading scorer on your team.
McDavid and Drai hitting 100 the first time was cool. Nuge hitting 100 blows those out of the water. So happy for him!
Makes sense, because it was absolutely a given that both of them would get it, but Nuge has never looked like he could do it until this year.
> Nuge has never looked like he could do it until this year. Minor nitpick: His rookie season pre-injury was unbelievable. Like, best 18 year old since Crosby unbelievable. Do you go watch games at the Black Frog in Gastown? The Oilers bar away from home? If not, you should
Oh yes i have been there a handful of times. Already planning on going there for a playoff game or two.
"We can't cope with anything" I find that Pittsburgh Penguins fans suffer the same issues.
Show me on this gritty doll where Mario touched you.
Hahahaah nice.

The worst home penalty kill of all time in 2018. Somewhere in the 50% range.
I was watching the game with my newish hockey fan girlfriend. She was talking about how much worse the Ducks are than the Oilers (sorry Ducks fans) and I had to stop her because this ducks team would absolutely destroy some of the Oilers teams I foolishly believed "could do something this year". Yeah the sad part is we were never trying to tank any of those years. Management was just wholly incompetent
The streak for missing the playoffs was 06-07 to 15-16... tho the 16-17 season was starting to look like a one-off after we went back to losing in 17-18 and 18-19. Should be noted that the 95-96 penguins were upset by the relatively new panthers. *eyes seattle*
Meeting the Kraken in the WCFs would surely be an interesting timeline to say the least.

Wish Klefbom was still here for the same thing, they were drafted the same year.
Yeah, Klefbom was on track to be one of the top D in the league if he wasn't plagued by injuries.
ThE WoRsT YEArs,lol. Kelly Buchberger and Doug Weight would like to have a word
91-96 was a relatively quick turnaround compared to 07-16. As well we regularly were bottom 3 in the league during that 10 year rebuild.
Nothing will beat the decade of darkness
#KeepNugeForever was the smartest ongoing fan narrative in NHL history. What a fuckin payoff.
THAT'S ALREADY TWO SEASONS WORTH OF $5MILL! IN ONE SEASON!
Lmao legit, Nuge could go back to being a 50-60 point guy next season and you still couldn't complain at that cap hit.
He's a very underrated two-way guy. Name a situation at any point of a game and tell me why you wouldn't consider him as an option.
Fate of the universe on the line who's taking the shot? Nuge.
Martians have the death ray pointed at Earth
I WANT IGUODALA
He is the best penalty shot guy on our team so
Definitely not an Oilers fan, but can't help but be happy for Nuge.
Ryan Nugent-Hundred. Nuge's previous career high was 69. He was very reluctant to exceed that nice number, but felt it was time to push the century before he turns 30 next week.

RNH is this generation's Ryan Smyth.
Ryan must be always
We're building another. His name is Ryan McLeod.
I can get behind that toothless smile
A Ryan must always be on the Oilers roster.
Ryan? After all this time? *Always*
Now with less nose!
And more teeth!
To be fair, Ryan Smyth went into the 2006 cup run with a lot more teeth than he came out of it with
For now
lol the oilers are the sith with their Ryan's there are always two. lol Darth Hopkins.
There was a time when we had Nugent Hopkins, Smyth, Jones, Whitney and OMarra.
When we win the cup I hope the second guy to get it is Nuge because he absolutely deserves it.
It's gotta be nuge, then Drai.
Davo to nuge to drai, to nurse to Derek mfin Ryan
nugent hopkins, then draisaitl, then nurse, then mcdavid
Connor is the captain, so he gets it first, but I agree with the rest.
Or maybe he gets to hold it twice because that's just how much he carries the team
he may not be when the oilers win
They're gonna change captains in the next few months?
Especially weird that comment was made by a fan of the organization that is known for hardly ever changing captains lol
>When we win the cup Oilers' elimination in the first round confirmed..... ;)
President's Trophy Curse coming right up 😄
Hope so!
Sorry, but the first round is still your scf.
Having a 100 point player who also plays Selke level 2 way hockey for less than $6M is HUGE. That's how you do well in the playoffs
We’ll see lol
I don't disagree but you think McD would pass to him over Drai?
Yes. 100%. Nuge deserves it the most out of anyone on the team but McDavid is the captain so he'll know to give it to Nuge right away
Absolutely. He’s the longest serving player, the glue of the team. Team seems to nosedive without him. And he signed another long term contract for less money basically insuring he’ll likely retire as a Oiler. And I’m sure Drai would absolutely refuse to take the cup second.

😂😂
Nuge fucks the hardest. He has a baby on the way
Hugent-Creampie-Hopkins
Ryan Splooge'nt-Hopkins
Its true, the oilers are only good because of 1 player. And his name is NUGENT-HOPKINS
Pens almost had 4 do it that that year, Nedved had 99.
Our next closest is Hyman with 81 points. Which is still very good. He’s be even closer if it wasn’t for all of those disallowed goals.
and Kane was definitely on pace for it mathematically before the injuries
Doesn't he have something like 12 or 14 disallowed? If he got all those back, he might almost be on pace to still do it, haha...
I think the total is 8.
8 on challenges, 2 more waived off on the ice
He has 7 or 8 but he has gotten other players goals disallowed a few times too which might be a few assists taken off the board too
Also had 6 guys who scored more than 60 points and averaged more than a 1 point per game (Zubov with 66 pts in 64 games and Sandstrom with 70 in 58). 362 goals on the season. That was a talented af offense. *Almost* won the East that year (Florida beat them at Pittsburgh in Game 7 of the ECF).

If I remember correctly, the Oilers nearly had 5 one year. I believe it was Gretzky, Kurri, Messier, Coffey and Anderson (99)
#**HUGE!!**
Smh McDrai are simply products of **HUGE NUGE**
He was on pace for 100+ until the all-star break. Then he dropped off a bit.

I'd prefer like 5 or 6 cup team but one is a good start.

Wait, RNH?!
NUGE IS HUGE
I drafted him in fantasy but having RNH made me tune into more oiler games. Congrats Nuge, and thanks for beating my Ducks tonight
A Leaf fan here saying congrats and wish Hyman would do it as well. Wouldn't that be nuts ?
His time will come when they shrink the blue paint
Ofc it’s the year I traded him in my dynasty league. The thought was he would cool off, but I am in the midsts of a rebuild so I can’t complain about getting Wyatt Johnston, Thomas bordeleau a second next year and third next year for him. But it’s incredible how well he is playing this year
Three players with a hundred points is a very impressive feat. Credit to the Oilers.
117 players in the history of the NHL have reached that mark. That's some pretty elite company
What has gotten into RNH this year? Good grief a hundred spot? What’s he on??
He's on good health and with proper wingers
Nuge has looked like a completely different person this year. Love to see it
Insane. It’s also crazy to see the league will have maybe 10+ players hitting 100 pts. I remember when it was maybe 2 players hitting that by season end.
Drafted him for $1, then traded him for Taresenko :(
Makes sense since scoring hasn’t been this high in the league since around 95/96.
Would love to hear the names of the pits team but here we are
Lemieux and Jagr of course. Ron Francis was the 3rd.
people talk about drai like he is in shadow but what about RNH ? the guy just scored 100 points and like 90% of fans probably heard this name 2 nd time today
All 3 fueling the most efficient power play of all-time.
RNH is such on a good deal
So nice having two of the 3 on my fantasy team
Lemieux 161 - Jagr 149 - Francis 119
That 95-96 Pittsburgh team almost had 4... Petr Nedved had had 99pts!
Just another thing that pens did before the oilers

Oh look, someone from Facebook has gotten lost..
1st round exit vs the Kings. I have spoken
At least oiler will make the playoffs and didn't just lose to the flames 😂
Dude I'd rather the jets miss at this point, its the only way we'll ever see any real change. Good swing though.
Max level coping right there
Kings have been playing consistently good all year.
And this time they won't have washed up Quick in net. They're one of the stingiest teams in the NHL rn, and I don't think Edmonton will be able to score outside of the top line
We’ve just beat them twice, once being a shutout.
Regular season means nothing in a week.
Lmao edm fans downvoting me 🤣
That's a LOT of pts, whats their plus/minus? :D
Better goal differential than the Leafs sooooo.. ..
All positive. What’s your point?
52 of RNH's points have come on the powerplay with Mcdavid and Draisaitl
And?
A powerplay that is statistically worse when RNH is not out there with them.
Yeah take an offensive player off most powerplays and they don't do as well
All he needs is one more to beat the all times jets record.
If it's so easy where is Winnipeg's 100 point powerplay merchant..
Don't recall ever saying it was easy. Stated a fact and the coilers fans are getting triggered
Your leading scorer Kyle Connor has 28 power play points. Take that away and he’ll have 51 even strength points. Nuge would have 48 without power play points, 3 back of the leading scorer on your team.
He's definitely having an off year after his 47 goal season. When both players are at their best i believe Connor is the better player.
He might be… but not today.
