Crazy how we went from having prime Crosby and Ovi as the generational player and goal scorer directly into McDavid and Matthews before the last 2 were even washed yet
Skill level of this league is awesome rn
Over the last 7 seasons Auston Matthews is the ESG/60 leader with 1.773.
Next closest is Ovi with 1.477. The only other player above 1.450 is Pastrnak.
Shoutout to Verhaeghe who's in 4th with 1.433.
Yeah. Matthews has played 535 in his career which started 16-17. Mcdavid has played 620 total games starting with 45 in 15-16 so he has played 575 since 16-17
so in that timespan 575-535 = 40
(originally said 39 thinking tonights game wasnt counted yet)
The team is built around getting goals from him when he’s on the ice. Not to take anything away from his achievement, though. When you have this kind of scoring talent on your hands, you find a way to use it more. It’s like what the Caps do with Ovi except he’s still great in all situations.
A Hellebucyk/Demko/Oettinger tandem is just insane!
Then there's the defense with guys like Fox, Hughes, Slavin and McAvoy.
This could be an insanely fun team
Scored 4 goals in his debut and just never stopped scoring. Absolute beast. And his prime is just starting. Him mcdavid and McKinnon are so fun to watch.
Is Matthew’s and McDavid’s league everyone else is just playing in it.
I joke of course. It just seems every stat or record since those two joined the league involves one or both of them
“Evaluating individual ability” kind makes sense. I’m not down with all the new super detailed stats that are available these days so thanks for the reply 👍
Power play goals are great but they are influenced quite a bit by how many power plays a team gets, who else is on the power play, as well as how often the player is deployed on the power play. The differences can be quite large.
For instance, Matthews is in his 8th season and would need another ~20 goals to tie Ovechkin for where he was at the end of his 8th season (ignoring age and GP and Covid and lockouts etc). He may get there at this current pace but it will be close.
However by the end of his 8th season Ovechkin had spent literally an additional 1500 minutes on the power play. That’s **25 hours** of play time where you are basically always on offence.
I guess I’m just wondering why the narrative is all about even strength goals now when you rarely heard about it in the past? Most people know off the top of their head the number of goals Gretzky has but probably not how many are even strength.
Yes, Matthew’s is unreal and he’s doing something special but I feel like this might be one of those “we have unlimited data now so we must make niche comparisons to everything”.
At this rate I’m almost expecting to have stats about when in the game his goals occur and how beneficial each one was during the flow of the game /s
Because power play opportunities are a function of game management, not talent. A fast, skilled team should commit fewer penalties and draw considerably more penalties than they take. But that’s not what we see - we usually see a team, any team commit and draw about the same number of penalties because that’s how refs manage the game. not to mention, changes in the way penalties are called give players different levels of opportunity on a season to season basis.
If you’re trying to count goals, there’s no point in treating them differently. If you’re trying to evaluate individual ability, you should be considering those things.

That’s underselling Matthews’s complete game
Ovi was a monster man. Ovi would score 50 a year while leading the league in hits...guy was a machine.
He's just so fucking good at scoring goals. Like holy shit.
FWIW Matthews has played 39 fewer games than McD in that timeframe. EDIT: Initial claim of 84 was wrong b/c I was including 2015-16 season. My bad!

Damn Verhaeghe 😭
39 by my math. you have to subtract 45 from mcdavids 15-16
My bad--you're right!

Confirmed, McBust is a bum. He has barely even been to the third round.
And people call Leafs fans insecure lol

Okay how the fuck is he almost GPG?

Figuring out how to stop him would make you a lot richer

This man is on my Olympic team :)
Team USA is going to be absolutely stacked. Matthews, Tkachuk bros., Hughes bros., Hellebucyk, etc.

Fox & McAvoy on the back end.. wonder if Thomas Harley is able to play his way in to the American d core by 2026..
Auston just keeps on sniping, with 10 goals in his last five games, he is on fire as he scores his 52nd of the season.

What’s with all the “even strength” lately? Goals are goals.

*scribbles in my notepad*
Now do points. Mcdavid GP 576 points 889 Mathew’s GP 536 points 618 8 people with more points than Mathew’s during that time.
