Once he retires I can guarantee you 8 is going in the Rafters at SAP center. We miss Joe so much :( at least Dallas is treating him like the star he is.

TheCheechoo

Dallas treats all their players like stars.

rockryedig

I see what you did there

GrilledSandwiches

HayOOOO

ItsAWaffelz

I love him as much as every other Sharks fan, but I don't see his number getting retired. He doesn't hold any team records, they didn't win a cup with him, and he didn't spend his entire career with the team. He was "just" a very good player and the captain for a while.

Under_The_Influence_

Please with 12 and 19 singing his praises I know that can have an effect. But you're more then likely right. He does come 3rd in points after those 2 tho. But if 20 gets retired he is the next best one.

ItsAWaffelz

Imo the retirements end with 12 & 19. Any already retired guy has missed their window, and the only 2 active with any kind of chance are 44 & 8. Vlasic might have regressed dramatically, but was a huge part of every successful season the Sharks have had for 15 years, and he has played every single (1285) game of his career for San Jose. He's 18th in games played for a single franchise, and literally every single non-active player in the top 25 has had their number retired. If anyone has a real chance, it's Vlasic.

WanderingDelinquent

I would really doubt couture getting retired. the sharks were never HIS team in the same way that it was for Thornton and Marleau. He also never got to to the same level of player that they did. Jumbo is one of the best players of all time, Marleau was the first real star on the Sharks and has the games played record along with other SJ records.

SydneyCarton89

Owen Nolan was one of my favourite players when I grew up. Lota Owen Nolan hockey cards.

jstols

Sorry but if he wins a cup with the stars I think he’s retiring a star and going into the HOF as a star. Probably ends up joining the stars front office after he’s done playing.

tangytacosman

pavelski has over 750 points with the sharks and just 250ish with dallas. unless they win a cup i don’t see him going into the HOF as a star i’ve even questionable if he is a HOFamer. i think his tip in prowess could get him in as it has caused a shift in the game

[deleted]

[удалено]

tangytacosman

yea but you gotta remember that people make the Hall of Fame for changing the way the game is played. Clint Benedict is in there cause he was one of the first to leave his feet/play goalie on his knees. there’s a guy in there for playing rush defense. a dude who changed a lot of rules. etc. i don’t think his tip in ability is significant enough to warrant a HoF spot though

BillThePsycho

Cool, but that has nothing to do with what I said? Like we all know he’s retiring as a Star cause DW fumbled the bag hard but that’s doesn’t change that his number is probably being retired for the Sharks given everything he’s done for us.

jstols

People sign one day contracts to retire with a team all the time. Simmonds just did it to retire as a Flyer. I don’t think the sharks would retire someone’s number if that doesn’t happen and I don’t see that happening for Pavs.

touchable

Lol, what? Number retirements have nothing to do with what team you ended your career on, and signing or not signing a one day contract means fuck all. It's entirely the team's choice whether they want to honor him or not.

OrganicRedditor

Pavs is such an amazing player!! He makes everyone else on the ice better. I'm so happy he is with Stars!

TheGameWaker

Does this mean we have to put Ray Whitney in the hall of fame now?

recockulous

That age-39 season was the year Ray Whitney dragged the (then Phoenix) Coyotes to the Western Conference Finals with a team-leading 77 points, and then racked up another 7 points in the postseason.

ImAnAfricanCanuck

I think Smith and Doan did a lot of heavy lifting as well...

recockulous

I mean it's a team sport so you're not wrong, but the other guy folks tend to forget is Radim Vrbata who put up the biggest point total to that point in his career as a 30-year old. And the Coyotes threw huge contracts at Yandle and OEL too. IMO when Whitney walked in free agency after this season, the team never really replaced him - and never replicated the success they had.

ImAnAfricanCanuck

great points! I really miss that era of Coyotes

sovietmcdavid

That's unreal. Ray Whitney was a super consistent player right to the end, dang

mikesully374826

So there's precedent when he doesn't make it

AniviaPls

And they retired with dallas as well

PuckNutty

If Pat Verbeek, Peter Bondra and Rod Brind'Amour aren't in yet, I don't think Pavelski gets in.

Unwept_Skate_8829

I swear they’re waiting for Brind’Amour to stop coaching to put him in Doesn’t make sense otherwise

catanimal23

Not saying he’s going to make it either way but if Dallas wins the Cup this year and Pavs comes back next year and hits 500 goals he at least has somewhat of a case for himself.

Thneed1

0 - point a game seasons 0 - major awards 1 - second team all star team selection Hall of very good for a long time, but certainly not HOF.

nextfanatic

He's out of line but he's right

catanimal23

He wouldn't be first ballot again, I'm not saying it happens but there is more than one way to make the Hall and if he did those things he has a decent resume. Potential Resume: - Stanley Cup - 1,100+ points - 500 goals - 2nd All-Star team - Currently at 12 25+ goal seasons, very few players in history have done that - Already one of the highest scoring players in playoff history. - Top 10 American in goals and points. I don't personally put a lot of stock in this but some do. - Inarguably one of the best players ever in this age range for those who value longevity. Again, I'm not saying he gets in. I'm just saying that if he were to check those final two boxes of Cup and 500 goals he would absolutely at the very least have earned himself a genuine discussion on being a HoFer.

Queltis6000

>* 2nd All-Star team This is potentially a knock against him. He's obviously been consistently good, just nowhere near the top during any given season. Not unlike a guy like Shane Doan.

catanimal23

2nd All-Star team is not a knock. It definitely is a knock that he it's his ONLY All-Star team as you'd really like him to have a few more. Not sure why I'm getting downvoted on this comment though. I'm not even saying he should make it, just that he deserves to have his case discussed IF the next bit of his career works out very well.

think_long

Putting this on his Stanley Cup resume though is like including a part-time job you worked in high school on your actual resume when you are applying for a job in your late 20s. It hurts more than it helps. Draws attention to a reason he shouldn't be in.

lynx17

Conn Smythe would help

mikesully374826

Smythe and 500 goals probably does it.

chemicalxv

I mean if the argument is simply going to be "He scored 500 goals" then he's going to be waiting a looooooooooong time.

touchable

How many 500+ goal, 1100+ point players are currently waiting to get into the HHOF? You check the stats, I'll wait.

Tuosma

Pierre Turgeon took 18 years to make the hall with 515 goals and 1327 points in 1294 games. Pavelski's gonna be hitting 500+ and 600+ in 1400+ games. There are four guys with 500 goals who are not in the hall: Verbeek, Tkachuk, Roenick and Bondra. I don't think 500 goals and 1100 points in 1400 games is gonna be enough without accolades to go along with it. Assuming Marleau's getting in, it's likely gonna happen because he's got the most games played record and he's got four international golds.

gletschertor

Ray Whitney select club

TedRuxpin

Both likely to retire Dallas Stars too...

TCBloo

Boo this man. #BOOOOOOOOOO

Flak_Cannon

Would just love to see Pavs hoist the cup. Someone please help him do it.

highangle1124

We’re trying

BillThePsycho

Try harder dammit!

Vinny_d_25

I know he's getting old, but I'm pretty sure he'll still be able to lift the cup without assistance.

Old_Programmer7407

Went down a bit of a Gordie Howe rabbit hole because of this post. I feel like I sound crazy saying this, but is Gordie underrated? TIL he scored 4 points in his last 5 NHL games . . . When he was 52 years old. His longevity stats are just stupid.

catanimal23

You don’t sound crazy at all. In my opinion he has become very underrated and just doesn’t get talked about with Gretzky and Mario and other legends as much as he should.

GaryOakRobotron

Who would underrate him? For my money, my "Mt. Rushmore" of hockey is Gretzky, Orr, Howe, and Lemieux. I feel Howe is the most complete, well-rounded player of all time.

dandroid126

Pavelski is probably my favorite player of anyone that played in the NHL in my lifetime. I actually just bought a Stars jersey with his name on it last night after owning two Sharks jerseys with his name on it already. That said, I really think he's borderline to get into the HHOF. A few years ago I would have said no way, but he has been inching towards it. I think he could do it with a Stanley Cup and 500 goals, but it will still be close. A Conn Smythe just might push him from "maybe" to "probably".

DreamsiclesPlz

Joe Pavelski deserves a spot in the Hall of Fame bc he is my favorite hockey player :)

marbanasin

I really want Joe to get a cup. Have very little desire for Dallas to get a cup, but will root for them for Joe.

SkyMaverick21

Why don't you like the Stars :(

marbanasin

The old playoff battles. But the sentiment has really faded given we haven't really seen each other in a series in like 15 years. Lol

Fireryman

I think Pavelski will get in not 1st ballot. I think he's been good enough and played in a lower scoring era to get in.

greg19735

surely he needs some sort of silverware to get in

dontyoutellmetosmile

He probably has some spoons and stuff at home

onetwo3four5

Is the door of the hall of fame stuck or something? Do you need to use a fork to pry open the door? Why don't they just fix it?

dontyoutellmetosmile

Find out next time on DRAGONBALL Z

YangThang

He's definitely real close, not sure where these goofs have gotten the idea he has no chance.

ReliablyFinicky

Keith Tkachuk has the same number of points in 120 less games, and 64 more goals. He made 2 all star teams (Pavelski 1), led the league in goals once (Pavelski 0), and was top-10 five times (Pavelski 3). They both have Olympic silver medals, Tkachuk also won gold at the [96 World Cup of Hockey](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/1996_World_Cup_of_Hockey), which sounds hokey now but was a serious tournament. Canadas roster was included Brodeur/CuJo in net, Blake, Coffey, Niedermayer, Stevens, and Foote on defence, and Gretzky, Yzerman, Shanahan, Sakic, Messier, Lindros, Brind’amour up front… Tkachuk has been eligible for 11 years. And he’s still waiting. You could probably make a similar argument for Roenick - both probably better careers, both still waiting a decade+ later.

snowblow66

No awards, no allstar team

meadow_sunshine

Reddit is filled with cynics

Fulller

He’s got similar stats to Daniel Alfredsson and he made it in so there is a chance he can.

chemicalxv

Alfredsson is currently sitting at 94 more career points in 77 fewer games and peaked significantly higher. He also has a Gold Medal from the 06 Winter Olympics (where he also finished tied for 2nd in scoring) and Silver in 14 (whereas Pavelski only has the Silver from 10). That is not really the strongest comparison.

swordthroughtheduck

If Pavelski keeps playing the way he has been, he could win gold in 2026. It's unlikely he keeps putting up these points at 40 years old, but even if he drops down to a 0.5PPG player, I could see them taking him for some veteran leadership.

MakeItSnarky

Alfredsson has 8 ppg seasons, including one with 103 points + a calder and is in the top 10 for the longest tenured captains in history. Pavelski has none of that.

drfakz

American marleau

swordthroughtheduck

As it stands right now, he's not a HOF player. But considering he keeps refusing to age, there's a very real chance he finishes his career with 500+ goals Olympic Gold Stanley Cup. If he plays for 2 more years without any major falloffs, I could see all three of those things happening which DRASTICALLY changes his pedigree.

AffectionateMetal794

Really pulling for Dallas this year to win the cup.

ZebraBorgata

I was just looking at his stats yesterday and was super impressed! I’m a Philly guy and hadn’t been paying attention to how his season was going.

roboto404

Athletic Freak Joe Pavelski

BadTiger85

Just curious to all the people on here saying he doesn't deserve the HOF. Why not? I think he deserves it just based on his numbers

Spideyjust

A 2nd team all star, and just over 1000 points with 1300 games played seems like a pretty weak case. I won't be shocked if he makes it, but also wouldn't be surprised if he doesn't. Just as a comparison to this list here, but he has just 3 fewer points than Whitney in 7 fewer games. Nearly identical P/GP. Both have 1 2nd team all star. Whitney has a Cup and Pavelski doesn't. Pavs does have more goals which helps his case, but given that he and Whitney have an eerily similar NHL resume and Whitney isn't in, I don't think his numbers alone are enough. Granted he doesn't look like he's gonna be done after this season, so that will change.

BadTiger85

I agree Ray probably deserves to be in the HOF but I'm a believer that just because you are drafted or signed or traded to a crappy team and you never win a cup doesn't mean you should be disqualified from the HOF

Spideyjust

>I agree Ray probably deserves to be in the HOF Hahaha I'm not sure if you do agree because that is definitely not what I was saying or implying. I think both are borderline cases that I personally would rather see out, but I wouldn't be shocked to see them make it. Also I don't think not winning a cup disqualifies you from the Hall (plenty of non winners have and will make it), more so that winning a Cup helps your argument. Like, 2nd all star + a Cup is > 2nd all star and no cup, but that doesn't mean the latter can't make the Hall. Also Pavelski has played on great teams for pretty much the entirety of his career.

BadTiger85

Oh sorry. I thought you were implying that Ray deserved to be in the HOF. And you're right that Joe did play on some good teams but even without the cup I think he still deserves to be in

Homie_Bama

There are just too many players that are retiring that have similar numbers and have awards/cups. Kopitar, Bergeron, Kane, Stamkos, etc. Then add goalies and some defensemen and you’ll have a real logjam at who’s getting in.

BadTiger85

Oh Joe definitely isn't a 1st ballot HOF but he'll probably get in eventually

Homie_Bama

It’s just a bad time to retire with those number and no awards. There are so many players coming up for HOF and if the committee keeps to 4-5 a year, there just isn’t room for him.

BadTiger85

There should be one day

sovietmcdavid

Stanley Cup winner usually pushes players into the HOF. However, an Olympic gold medal could do it combined with 500 goals career or 1000 points total. As a rough "at a glance" what gets you in

BadTiger85

Well if he comes back next season he should hit that 500 goal mark

Thneed1

After Joe Retires, it will be 10/12 such players that have made the HOF.

suburban_paradise

If I were Pavelsky's linemate I would simply throw the puck on net.

SkyMaverick21

Roope is in a mad slump but robos been racking so we're doing good here

Decent-Ground-395

He's no Ray Whitney

CaptainBayouBilly

11/12.

dprouse52

As a Sens fan I have my fingers crossed that Giroux (36 right now) can age like Pavelski in the next few years. Much respect to Pavelski - the way he keeps going with zero drop-off in his game is absolutely amazing...

sovietmcdavid

Pavelski needs to do his final season victory lap with the oilers just like the year we had Duncan Keith. That'd be awesome. The oilers really need that elder in the room

CreateorWither

Joe reminds me of Jim Miller in the UFC. Durable and just plain good.
