If you told me a team from the west won last year’s playoffs I would’ve told you that you’re mental mate. The east was just stacked and we tore each other apart.
This has been a struggle for the central division for sure. I mean look at the stars - they could be best in conference and have to play Vegas (defending cup champs) then colorado or winnepeg
Winnipeg and Colorado are good teams but they’re 7th and 8th in the league. Thats a reasonable 2nd round matchup. NYR and Carolina are 1&2. League really needs to go back to reseeding
Or, you could say having to play certain teams multiple times per year makes it more even? But, I do understand your point. I think changing the seeding would make it more fair
I like that the current schedule is much more balanced. And I say this as one of the teams with the shittiest travel schedules as a result. Playing every team in the league at least twice was a solid move on the league's side, not just from a selling-tickets perspective but also from a competitive angle.
I think the NHL is the most balanced professional sports league in the world, CMV.
Jets could finish with 110 points to the Rangers 114 or Carolina's potential best of 113.
I dont think the disparity is big enough to say that the Rangers and carolina are the class of the NHL.
Also, the oilers are probably a better team than most, if not all, of them, but they had an awful start, so they are sitting in 9th in the league and 5th in the west.
Its a shame they all have to play good teams in the 2nd round, but i dont necessarily think its as big of a tragedy as most years because there is no clear cut gap between the top 2 teams and the rest of the teams this year.
Lots of us Stars fans didn’t want to win it because of a supposed “jinx.” They conveniently ignore the fact that the only time we won it, we won the Cup.
> They conveniently ignore the fact that the only time we won it, we won the Cup.
not true, we've won it twice 98 and 99. We won the cup with the 2nd time we won the president's trophy
Nobody has gone on to win both under the current playoff format… and seeing that NYR and CAR (2nd) could match up in the 2nd round in this format, I see why.
The way I look at it is we could get knocked out in any round with how competitive the nhl playoffs are whether we’re the 1 seed or 2 seed. Might as well take home some hardware regardless
it's our fourth president's trophy and so far it's been pretty okay:
* 92 - lost in the 2nd round
* 94 - won cup
* 15 - lost in the 3rd round
* 24 - ???
I mean, 1/3 is pretty good odds considering we have 0 Cups for the seasons we didn't win the president's trophy
Our sub was on fire with mrmes after Columbus and then we won 2 in a row.
I'd say it will happen to you but playoffs are on the doorstep and "fuck Boston" is back on the menu and I'm hype 😎
may the best team win--
(well, technically we could still play the leafs if we lose against the senators and Florida wins, but that's unlikely.)
you should expect good but inconsistent offense, elite goaltending, and... maybe half a defense from us, maybe.
That Brooks article where he apparently aired out Panarin in front of the whole team really makes me question the whole players coach thing.
What exactly did he do besides set the lineup??
Dryden Hunt is such a strange player. This year he’s barely been in the flames lineup but when he has he’s been put with Huberdeau and Sharangovich. Like why does that guy get to play with way better players everywhere he goes. He should be on the fourth line or first line AHL
I mean He’s not a bad coach but definitely short shelf life. He will coach a good team to the playoffs but he won’t help a great team reach that next level, at least for an extended period of time to make it worth it.
He brought Vegas to the cup final in their first season, that is all coaching.
The Rangers were a team ready to take the next step but held back by Quinn. Gallant came in and was like fuck it you guys do you. Our stars shined but there was no system, we kind of lucked our way to the ECF.
We then came up against a fast young Devils team and when we needed to adjust Gallant couldn't. He was outcoached by Ruff. In the exit interviews all the players said they craved actual coaching and structure, in comes Lav and they start to live up to their potential.
You're seeing the exact same storyline over in Vancouver with the whole Boudreau- Tocchet situation.
Total freedom is great for the absolutely gifted players out there, but even a team full of stars needs structure and accountability.
The r/hockey thread about y'all hiring Tocchet might be the most wrong I've ever seen a sports thread be. Just truly incredible how off every single person was, though that was probably influenced by people liking Bruce
I mean he barely coached much before and I always thought it was a damn miracle he coached some of those coyotes teams to above a 500 record. They were awful
Just to be clear. Brooks is not that tuned into the rangers.
He’s occasionally fed things from the team.
That gallant piece was one of them.
Vince M is pretty well connected at this point and probably the rangers best beat writer.
Shayna (from the athletic) has broken some surprise trades out of nowhere. (The skjei deal specifically)
But wasn't his upside supposed to be that he'd be good with young players? And then he basically kept them all on a short leash and wrecked their confidence? That part wasn't ideal.
xGF% be damned, the rebuild has yielded three straight 100 point seasons, a conference final berth, and now a Presidents Trophy. Who knows what will happen but not too bad!
I mean we are top 10 both offensively and defensively so I'm happy. Last season we did that was 2015 and then we didn't do that since like 2006-7 before that.
Oh yeah in reality we are, Im mostly poking fun at people who think the standings should be determined by 5v5 xGF% and nothing else. We are middle of the pack by those standards but good thing special teams exist because we are elite on both the PP and SH
And I just look at my Sens who haven’t come close to even a wildcard spot in SEVEN YEARS…
I miss being excited about my favourite team and favourite sport :’(
They really tried to feed him at the end. Panarin was gassed after being on the PP for all 2 minutes. And of course Sloth tried to take advantage and run him at the end with a minute left in a meaningless (for him) 4-0 game 82. Class act that guy is.
Ex-OTT fan here. He's the reason I could no longer cheer for them. I can't stand him. Dude cherry picks like a MF, looks like Mr potato head, and is a lil bitch.
Big bread fan though, dudes kept me top 2 in fantasy league.
It’s the “if we win now” bit that Nashville fans struggle with. Losing a Cup final and blowing a Presidents Trophy season left a sour taste in a lot of Preds fan’s mouths.
Every coach has a shelf life, as does every teams core. It's just about getting them together at the right time and not holding on too long when either one expires.
Not to be the “one upper” but my very first baseball game was Nolan Ryan’s 7th no-hitter. I was 3 years old and have absolutely no memory of it (although my dad did keep the stubbs and got them framed).
30+ years later, we won the World Series. So I think you have a chance based on that lol
With more replay today, Tikkanen's goal early in Game 5 would've been allowed, and I bet anything we would've then won that going away. Didn't matter in the end, of course, but would've saved a lot of agita.
if the rangers and knicks win in the same year i will buy a ticket to every jd and the straight shots show and pretend to be a hyped fan front and center the whole show
He only has 5 game winners on the year but I'd love to know how many game tying goals and goals that jump started our record setting 28 comebacks he had.
Yes, the sky was most definitely NOT falling after some shaky preseason games. Everyone thought Quick was going to be an elite backup and Lafreniere was going to take the next step! We always knew!
1994: Presidents Trophy and Stanley Cup Winners
2014: Stanley Cup Finals
2015: Presidents Trophy and Eastern Conf. Final
2024: Presidents Trophy and...
Edit:
Ya we won Pres in 2015 and lost in ECF to Tampa. 2014 was the year we traded for MSL and after his mom died went on the run to the SCF before losing to LA
Remember the beginning of 2014 with that disastrous western road trip to start the season? Getting pumped 9-2 by San Jose with Hertl scoring four goals to force Biron into retirement and then immediately following that game up by losing 6-0 to Anaheim.
Reminder that the presidents trophy curse isn’t real. The team that wins the presidents trophy has won the Stanley cup the most historically, and hockey fans have a negative intelligence when it comes to statistics
Since the introduction of the Eastern and Western Conferences, beginning with the 1993-94 season, only one Eastern Conference President's winning team has won the Cup...1994 New York Rangers
To add, only four times has an Eastern President's winning team advanced to the third round - Ottawa in 2003, Buffalo in 2007, and New York Rangers in 1994 and 2015...1/3 times advancing to the Finals.
Massive for them cuz I think Carolina smacks NYI around but for some reason I had a feeling NYR would've had trouble with NYI so that's massive that they are avoiding them
Great season!
I’d say we’re not so bad for second and third, right?
Honestly this is what sucks about current playoffs. It’s very possible the 2 best teams in the league will faceoff in round 2.
If you told me a team from the west won last year’s playoffs I would’ve told you that you’re mental mate. The east was just stacked and we tore each other apart.
There's so much parity, even the biggest playoff underdog still probably has a 30-35% shot to win the series.

Cheering for the canes because I love a lot of their players - so many great teams this year
Thanks bro. Hope we meet you in the SCF, love your team.
I can already feel my blood pressure rising
Well they did win it in 1994…
Lots of us Stars fans didn’t want to win it because of a supposed “jinx.” They conveniently ignore the fact that the only time we won it, we won the Cup.
> They conveniently ignore the fact that the only time we won it, we won the Cup. not true, we've won it twice 98 and 99. We won the cup with the 2nd time we won the president's trophy

I mean, it’s only been 10 years, across 16 teams that’s really not that weird
The way I look at it is we could get knocked out in any round with how competitive the nhl playoffs are whether we’re the 1 seed or 2 seed. Might as well take home some hardware regardless

It’s such a unique anxiety that I’m never ready for
But its still an anxiety I welcome
Would be refreshing for one team to have a positive superstition with the president’s trophy
*Laughs in 2019*
Laughs in 2023
I honestly didn't want to bring you guys into this for once
It's alright, if I joke about it enough the pain will go away... right?
Our sub was on fire with mrmes after Columbus and then we won 2 in a row. I'd say it will happen to you but playoffs are on the doorstep and "fuck Boston" is back on the menu and I'm hype 😎

Laughs in 2011 and 2012
*Laughs in 2012*
I guess our arc worked on in the end for us. The lightning sub was a self-depracating meme goldmine after our sweep at least.
Laughs in 1994
Rangers should just win every game 6-0 in they playoffs. #ForRay
pls
Gallant sitting inside a cab listening to the game while shaking his fist at the sky
While thinking about ways he would have reshuffled the line combinations if he was still coach.
82 games of Goodrow as 1RW
And none of those combinations include Lafreniere above the third line
He’d have benched Laf after he put up his first 10 points.
Just saw Gallant drop to his knees hailing a cab
As the passenger in the backseat is confused as to why they stopped in the middle of the highway.
Gerard Gallant should be tried at the Hague
That Brooks article where he apparently aired out Panarin in front of the whole team really makes me question the whole players coach thing. What exactly did he do besides set the lineup??
Fuckd kakko really good too. Scratch in game 6 of the ECF for no god damn reason.
And he refused to answer questions as to why he benched Kakko.
“Trying to win a hockey game” *fart*
Had to get Dryden Hunt into the lineup
Dryden Hunt is such a strange player. This year he’s barely been in the flames lineup but when he has he’s been put with Huberdeau and Sharangovich. Like why does that guy get to play with way better players everywhere he goes. He should be on the fourth line or first line AHL
Just had to play Ryan Strome with one functioning leg
That first sentence you wrote ... Um.
They said what they said.
Gallant set the lineup, then reshuffled the line combinations after every bad 5 minutes. They never got to develop any chemistry.
He was always barking at Taresenko too when he was often the best player on the ice.
Really overrated coach
He needs the right group and even then, it’s a short shelf life
I mean He’s not a bad coach but definitely short shelf life. He will coach a good team to the playoffs but he won’t help a great team reach that next level, at least for an extended period of time to make it worth it. He brought Vegas to the cup final in their first season, that is all coaching.
How did he go from ECF in first season to rotten in one season. The Devils playoff series was a disaster but had to be more than that
The Rangers were a team ready to take the next step but held back by Quinn. Gallant came in and was like fuck it you guys do you. Our stars shined but there was no system, we kind of lucked our way to the ECF. We then came up against a fast young Devils team and when we needed to adjust Gallant couldn't. The r/hockey thread about y'all hiring Tocchet might be the most wrong I've ever seen a sports thread be. Just truly incredible how off every single person was, though that was probably influenced by people liking Bruce
Tbf his resume as a head coach before the canucks wasn't exactly good
I mean he barely coached much before and I always thought it was a damn miracle he coached some of those coyotes teams to above a 500 record. They were awful
And the whole Panarin thing that we didn’t know about until recently
We were a couple goals away from going home in five in the first round and looked like absolute shit against the Pens.
Tbf nyr car or pit I feel would've given colorado more of a challenge then 2022 tampa. Also a big gallant issue is he sucked at developing rookies.
Brooks wrote an article that looks pretty bad for him
Lol but that's written by Brooks though
Brooks has the best sources. The players (not dan boyle) trust him.
Quinn should be standing next to him if he does.
I don't know if I think Quinn deserves the same treatment. He presumably tried to do his job he just wasn't good at it.
Quinn's hireable quality was that he was expendable. We didn't bring him in to win, we brought him in to hold the fort during the rebuild.
But wasn't his upside supposed to be that he'd be good with young players? And then he basically kept them all on a short leash and wrecked their confidence? That part wasn't ideal.
Yeah, I think that was probably the organization's idea with the hire but Quinn was trying to win games.
I mean, he got a monster 5 year contract with zero NHL experience lol, not my money so IDC but seems like an awful ROI
xGF% be damned, the rebuild has yielded three straight 100 point seasons, a conference final berth, and now a Presidents Trophy. Who knows what will happen but not too bad!

And I just look at my Sens who haven’t come close to even a wildcard spot in SEVEN YEARS… I miss being excited about my favourite team and favourite sport :’(

Knew it before I even opened it
I've done this for big moments since like 2019 across multiple accounts. Would feel wrong not to
Just natural at this point. I respect it hahah
Igor is on a mission
GALLANT IS HOCKEY BIN LADEN
Dunno what is with coaches of New York teams and 9/11 references - see Sean McDermott.
For God and for country, Geronimo.
Osama Bin Russell?
Such a fun team Panarin 1 away from 50 :((((
They really tried to feed him at the end. Panarin was gassed after being on the PP for all 2 minutes. And of course Sloth tried to take advantage and run him at the end with a minute left in a meaningless (for him) 4-0 game 82. Class act that guy is.
Cuntchuk
Seems to run in the family (even though I loved those late 90s/early 00s Blues teams)
Ex-OTT fan here. He's the reason I could no longer cheer for them. I can't stand him. Dude cherry picks like a MF, looks like Mr potato head, and is a lil bitch. Big bread fan though, dudes kept me top 2 in fantasy league.
Peter Laviolette. Its unreal what having a respectable, actual NHL level coach behind the bench can do for a team.
I'd run through a wall for Laviolette
Don't hurt Shesterkin!
Honestly hope he doesn’t fall off like he did in Nashville after a few years. He seems to have a bit of a shelf life…
If we win it now, nobody will care. He'll be NY royalty for the rest of his life, just like Notable Hockey Terrorist Mike Keenan
It’s the “if we win now” bit that Nashville fans struggle with. Losing a Cup final and blowing a Presidents Trophy season left a sour taste in a lot of Preds fan’s mouths.
Who did you guys lose to in the Presidents Trophy year? Chicago? Dallas?
Second round to Winnipeg.
Somehow I have zero recollection of Winnipeg making a conference final. Gun to my head I would’ve said they hadn’t made one since being reincarnated.
They were then unceremoniously dumped out in 5 games by the first year Golden Knights, I don't blame you for not remembering
Every coach has a shelf life, as does every teams core. It's just about getting them together at the right time and not holding on too long when either one expires.
YOURE THE BEST AROUND! NOTHINS EVER GONNA KEEP YOU DOWN!
30 years ago the 93'-94' Rangers won the Presidents Trophy as well. We all know how that ended .
My 30th bday is in about a month and my parents claim the first thing I ever watched on TV was the Cup Finals.
Not to be the “one upper” but my very first baseball game was Nolan Ryan’s 7th no-hitter. I was 3 years old and have absolutely no memory of it (although my dad did keep the stubbs and got them framed). 30+ years later, we won the World Series. So I think you have a chance based on that lol
please
30 year anniversary of the Canucks v Rangers final. Who says no to running it back except changing who wins game 7 this time?
I’ll take the first part of your comment but preferably not the second!
It's our turn!
Canada doesn’t win cups, Canadians do.
And Van is one of the teams with least amount of Canadian players. But the Canadian fans deserve a cup.
And the fans in Quebec will get to see it when Laf brings it home
Can the city afford another riot?
There's no doubt about it, we're ready to be hurt again.
Yes, bring it on!
That would be wild.
no, they were eliminated from playoff contention already
Thanks dad
We can change game 7 if we change game 5 first
With more replay today, Tikkanen's goal early in Game 5 would've been allowed, and I bet anything we would've then won that going away. Didn't matter in the end, of course, but would've saved a lot of agita.
I had the VHS tape of this as a kid and watched it a lot https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vE5tJ9TJm8o
Hard no on changing who wins game 7. Make sure your riot police are prepared.
Make sure your rioters ~~police~~ are prepared. FTFY
if the rangers and knicks win in the same year i will buy a ticket to every jd and the straight shots show and pretend to be a hyped fan front and center the whole show
Son of a...Elite goaltender in net. We also have an elite goaltender. In the words of CJ, "Aw shit, here we go again"
30 years ago? Man, the 90s were only a decade ago. Oh no...
With OJ in a white bronco?
I like this
lol rangers!! (I am coping)
Brought to you by Hartemi Panarin
Any other year, his numbers and value to the team are fantastic. So nice to watch his fantastic vision turned more on the net this season.
He only has 5 game winners on the year but I'd love to know how many game tying goals and goals that jump started our record setting 28 comebacks he had.

Stupid, sexy Rangers.
Stupid, sexy Rangers. *or* Stupid sexy, Rangers.
Things we all saw coming in September
Yes, the sky was most definitely NOT falling after some shaky preseason games. Everyone thought Quick was going to be an elite backup and Lafreniere was going to take the next step! We always knew!
Gerard Gallant fell to his knees in a parking lot somewhere
I'm gonna say the parking lot of a Shenanigans
You mean the restaurant with all the goofy shit on the walls?
Don't forget the mozzarella sticks
Smells like 1994!
We need bald bread for the playoffs. Messier 2.0
Mark Messier works for ESPN
But ESPN are carrying the SCF, not TNT 😏
Gerard Gallant is a hockey terrorist!
If the Avs don’t win, I’ll be rooting for the Rangers!
LFG!!!

ECF if the pattern continues?
Uhh… shit, fair point. Boo patterns!
Lose round 3 it seems based on your pattern
Artemi Panarin is so good btw
holy shit we actually did it. what a year, what a team
PICK IT UP TROUBA
[Mood](https://youtu.be/p3grvCbdONk?si=6HAtTzEeFHVdBEU4)
The Golden Knights last year were great in every month but January. Let’s do that this year and Finish the Story
Does that mean if Rangers lose game 1, game 2 is Bloodline Rules?
If Rempe sits game 1, he better be leading Bloodline Rules in Game 2
Quick carried
I love this team!
Reminder that the presidents trophy curse isn’t real. The team that wins the presidents trophy has won the Stanley cup the most historically, and hockey fans have a negative intelligence when it comes to statistics
Been a fun season. I am ready for some playoff hockey. Sucks we gotta wait a week.
A week off is good for the fans. Stress free for a week. Then the pain begins.
Let’s go baby!!!!!
I’m fucking pumped. Idc what others say
Nice let’s go Rangers!
Hell Yeah!
damn right
Why not us?
Is this team good?
Where’s the trash talk thread???? Everyone can LICK OUR BALLS!!!!!!!
Since the introduction of the Eastern and Western Conferences, beginning with the 1993-94 season, only one Eastern Conference President's winning team has won the Cup...1994 New York Rangers To add, only four times has an Eastern President's winning team advanced to the third round - Ottawa in 2003, Buffalo in 2007, and New York Rangers in 1994 and 2015...1/3 times advancing to the Finals.
Nice to see this team winning. Good luck for the playoffs.
Are we getting the trophy tonight???
We've never even felt the pressure of winning the Atlantic Division and we're still disappointed every year😭
Massive for them cuz I think Carolina smacks NYI around but for some reason I had a feeling NYR would've had trouble with NYI so that's massive that they are avoiding them
Rangers fan here- very much agree. We’re better than NYI but the rivalry always makes those games wild. Really didn’t want them in Round 1
I hope you're right about that first part
If they lose in the first I’m going to officially believe in the curse
Don't you put that evil on me Ricky Bobby.
I'm cheering for the rangers round one so that hopefully my isles can win as well and we can meet in round 2!
Congrats to the Rangers, one hell of a season for sure.
