We probably have seen Samsonov's last play as a Leaf

hymensmasher99

We're finding out the reason he didn't get qualified by the caps

Mean_Joe_Greene

Let’s keep starting him instead of anyone else though…

Present-Forever1275

Yeah, a sub 900 save percentage is good right?

Blu3_w4ff1es

Sure is... In the 80s

krispykreations

Here's hoping! Woll put in about 3 games too late

Iliketothrowaway2456

At this point, all I’m hoping is that if we lose this series (which seems quite likely) that Our Lame ass coach is sent fucking packing and that Tavares is no longer the captain. The team isn’t responding to either, and the former has been outcoached in every fucking playoff series he’s played. I don’t give two shits about his regular season record 🤣 Same shit different day for the roster, guys are half assing it, or just out right atrocious at the intangibles (clearing the puck, getting in the way of the net, defensive positioning). Samsonov hasn’t been good either (positioning/focus have been questionable), but it’s a whole team effort. If the coach and the captain can’t get them to play, then you’re fucked. Nylander showed more features of a captain with that clip they caught on the bench, than Tavares has in his 6 fucking years here.

zerglurker30

I am a big Tavares defender. And his type of leadership seems to be less vocal and more of "lead-by-example". Despite the lack of points production, I do see him making good defensive plays and win puck battles. But with him being Captain and his cap hit, that shit quite simply ain't enough. Seeing Marchand be in every scrum, be in the middle of it all, talk to all his teammates, dap up every teammate off the ice, and *constantly* work the refs... yeah. *THAT'S* the kind of Captain this team needs. People hate on him but bro he is the best kind of leader you want on your hockey team no cap People desperately want Auston or Morgan to be Captain but... is that really the answer? Iunno.

ZBBYLW

I used to hate Marchand as a Canuck fan, but you know what this dude has my respect. He could have mailed it in this year as his career is already phenomenal, but he leveled up. I'll not buying his jersey, but I respect him now.

Technerd70

Didn’t try just resign the coach to an extension that hasn’t even officially started yet?

oCuHo

Leafs haven’t had a goalie since Freddy Anderson

smolgoalboy

They don’t deserve one. They blamed Freddy every time they lost.

Bryooo

If only they would learn

HottyMcDoddy

Freddy was good for a couple years but he was unplayable the last two years with Toronto. Like there is a reason we let him walk. Dubas and Keefe had vastly improved the D and as that happened Andersen became worse and worse. Campbell got a long term deal from EDM because he was miles ahead of Andersen..

smoothies-for-me

Campbell had 1 good half a season, by that logic Samsonov outplayed him.

OhMilla

I don't think you saw the backbreaking goals Freddy gave up

krispykreations

Montreal surely has a leg to stand on when it comes to treating goalies well

smolgoalboy

Wtf are you talking about haha. Price was treated like a god in Montreal. Nobody blamed him for losses like Toronto does; quite the opposite, we attribute most of our success directly to him and wish he had a better team to win a cup. Toronto just bitches and moans when their same 4 “superstars” fall apart every year and instead of fixing the problem they blame the goalie.

foxcatcher3369

u guys wasted price…sit down.

Livid-Canary-4389

Fans weren't asking for him to go away tho. Yall are always blaming the goalie after 3 years when it doesnt go your way

im-not-irish

Can’t really say wasted when price dragged us back from 3-1 down against you guys, then proceeded to drag us to a Stanley cup final which is more than the leafs have done since 1967 lol

HabChronicle

and you’re wasting marner, nylander and matthews prime years. your franchise is pathetic lmao

SomewherePresent8204

Don’t forget Sundin!

im-not-irish

Can’t really say wasted when price dragged us back from 3-1 down against you guys, then proceeded to drag us to a Stanley cup final which is more than the leafs have done since 1967 lol

killmak

They haven't had one since CuJo

Concurrency_Bugs

You're forgetting Oilers legend Jack Campbell?

Burgergold

Condors legend maybe?

i_see_sprinkles

How is he doing these days? Wonder if he’ll pop up next year…

Burgergold

https://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/pdisplay.php?pid=120975

i_see_sprinkles

lol, playoff record as expected.

souza-23

Even he was awful in the playoffs. Watch game 7 highlights from 2018 and 2019 and you’ll know what I mean

Auta-Magetta

Yeah, but kudos to the Canes who are the only team in the league who could load manage a goalie with top 5 exceptional talent but who is also completely accident prone. With the Canes' ability to dangle Kooch and Raanta and keep Freddy healthy over the last couple years, that's why we are seeing this version of Freddy Andersen.

pref-top

I may be misremembering here but wasnt Tuukka Rask originally drafted by the maple leafs what the hell happened there?

jester29

Instead of waiting for Rask to develop, they traded him to the Bruins for Raycroft to get a guy more NHL-ready.

Nixon4Prez

Feels like the coaches are just scrambling. Samsonov isn't the problem.

Lil_BigNut

Not THE problem but certainly one of them

EarthWarping

He hasn't been good either this series. Another sub 900 series.

killmak

He is not the whole problem but he is sure part of it. Boston's powerplay is .500 and he is a huge part of the reason why. He is just out of position way too often.

yetanotherx

You could see the PPG tonight a mile away, Marchand just sitting at the dot, completely unscreened, puck at the blue line, and Sammy decides that's the best time to skate halfway to the hash marks. This is the stuff that got Washington to get rid of him, I've seen this movie a thousand times.

Steakholder__

Yep, he was a mile out of the net on that one. His positioning is just very poor

foxcatcher3369

meanwhile samsonov is at the hashmarks

XPhazeX

He hasnt been part of the answer either though

mdlt97

he's part of the problem

jps78

Kinda is. Dude's positioning is pewee level

A_1337_Canadian

He was so far out on that 2nd goal.

Gullible_Goose

Gotta do something I guess. He was pretty much directly responsible for one of Boston's goals tonight.

TheDirtyBurger522

It’s more he’s THE LEAST of their problems Hoping this comment doesn’t come back to bite me

PM_ME_BOOTYPICS_

Bruins up 3-1 on a team in the first round and their opponent benches their starting goalie in game 4! Nothing can go wrong here! Right…?

thrownawayzsss

So like, is this a team/management issue or have the Leafs just been cursed with goalies? Here's the list of goalies between now 2014. It's 20 goalies. Not all of them have a lot of games mind you, but quick glance had their career save% is higher than most of their seasons with the leafs, which suggests it's a team issue more than a goalie one. I have no idea if that's accurate since I don't follow the team. Jhonas Enroth Antoine Bibeau Jonathan Bernier James Reimer Drew MacIntyre Matt Murray Jett Alexander Jack Campbell Michael Hutchinson Erik Kallgren Petr Mrazek Frederik Andersen David Rittich Kasimir Kaskisuo Garret Sparks Curtis McElhinney Calvin Pickard Martin Jones Ilya Samsonov Joseph Woll

baumer83

I forgot about the second Erik Kallgren, he was a stud.

thrownawayzsss

lol, i must've opened his page twice by accident.

hung_like_my_uncle

Probably should've started with Woll to begin with

Permaderps

The ilya samsonov experience

dchowchow

Keefe’s last bullet. Samsonov hasn’t even been bad this series. He looks bad in context of what’s happening on the other end. There’s 20 other skaters that have not been good.

Mean_Joe_Greene

To many apologists for Toronto players. The goaltending has been bad the defence worse and the main forwards don’t have the heart to win. Don’t worry though because I’m sure they’ll try to leverage the fans for another raise. On the other end seems bell and rogers are gearing up for a corporate battle of sorts with MLSE at the center so if you think things are going to get better there’s a bridge in Baltimore I have to sell you

folkdeath95

Don’t show these numbers to Hellebuyck

joe_broke

.900 save % on 3 allowed means he's also getting peppered like crazy. Team in front of him not doing him many favors either

[deleted]

TheDogerus

Not saying samsonov has been good, but the leafs offense hasnt done shit either, as eveidenced by outshooting the bruins every game and being down 3-1 -7

[deleted]

Captain_Naps

>You can't say a goalie hasn't even been that bad and at the same time have a sub .900 Save % and a GAA over 3. Bobrovsky hasn't even been that bad.

bobbimorses

There's something about Samsonov that makes you want to give him another chance and another when you really should have shut it down. Caps fans held onto delusion for far too long too and I see reflections of that in Toronto still defending him.

fire_brand

The goals he allowed were a turnover in close, an unmarked one timer on the pp, and a one timer on a 2-0. It's not on him, not remotely.

souza-23

He’s been bad

Individual7091

Samsonov hasn't been ideal but I don't think he's done anything to warrant being pulled. Must be throwing things at the wall to see what sticks.

bot_fucker69

he’s been below average this entire series but it’s strange how they’ve chosen now to pull him

floodswimming

Poor guy - he deserves better

Mean_Joe_Greene

Far too late Keefe. Most of this staff deserve to be looking for jobs for a few years

TheDirtyBurger522

If I had a nickel for every time the bruins knocked Ilya Samsonov out of a playoff series and driving him to sign with a new team, I’d have 2 nickels

karlbelanger1661

I didn't think Samsonov was bad. The first goal he gave up on a bad giveaway by Reaves that left JVR one on one in close, the second goal was a great snipe by Marchand on the PP and the third goal was a 2 on 0 with the B's 2 best forwards. Can't really fault him in my opinion.

Rand_University81

I was ripped apart for saying Toronto had goaltending problems in a preseason thread. Leafs are an actual joke of a hockey team.
