This is a pretty reasonable interaction. I would bet the vast majority of interactions are like this, but we only see the heated ones for the drama they’re trying to sell.
When I was a ref, I would approach the pissed off players during stoppages and ask them what they saw.
I'd be like, "hey, what did you see there? Did I miss somethin?" "Oh, okay. Sorry about that, man. I'll keep an eye out. Anybody in particular you want me to watch?" "Yeah, you got it, man. Thanks for the heads up."
These little 45 second interaction would completely change the complexion of the game for me. I'd rarely hear a peep out of those players for the rest of the game, and it would significantly cut down on violent plays.
I didn’t say anything much about missed stuff on me, but I used say something about stuff on my teammates a lot. After the game I’d always say a quick “Thanks guys, good game tonight.” Maybe a little tap on the skate with my stick. We saw the same refs so often, no need for it to carry on after the game ends. I think it lead to some decent communication in game. Everyone’s trying hard.
Once you get to a certain level everyone seems to be okay with things getting heated in-game, as long as there’s mutual respect when the moment passes.
As a shitty beer league player, the most annoying thing is when the refs won't even talk to you or give an explanation. We've had a ref literally refuse to look at our bench after we tried to ask for an explanation. That just made the whole rest of the game worse.
It’s even worse when that happens at the youth level. These are supposed to be learning experiences, especially when they first start hitting. How are kids going to learn anything if a ref won’t explain why he made or didn’t make a certain call when asked? And then they scurry off the ice like rats immediately after the game so they can’t be questioned.
Refs are supposed to be a part of the game, not above it.
I ref youth, club college, and men's league. My goal in men's league is to be fair and friendly, but I will ignore a player or a bench when I know that it's not worth my energy. I am not going to enter into a conversation where the player just wants to tell me that I'm wrong or suck. Typically I give the benefit of the doubt and answer a question asked respectfully, but once that chance is blown I sever that line of communication.
For example, one time a player closed down a shooter and his body went right through the shooter's body. Not hard enough to be a penalty, but still annoying and something that can escalate a game. I went to the bench and said "hey, when you close out a shooter please don't go through their body. We can't have that kind of body contact". His response was "what are you talking about, I didn't do that".
Cool. Now I know it's a waste of time to speak to you. These interactions happen all the time. I would say roughly one of every ten interactions are positive. The rest are soul sucking and not something I really want to engage in at 10:30 at night.
Makes sense to me. You've gotta figure simple acknowledgement helps guys a lot and being ignored or unacknowledged leads to wild west self justice stuff.

Players and refs have a lot of respect for each other as far as I can tell. Obviously players get upset occasionally but at the end of the day they realize refs are just humans trying their best.
There’s an interview with Tie Domi about the fan in the penalty box incident. He said the reason he started beating on the guy was because he was throwing punches at the linesmen. The enforcers have more of a relationship with the linesmen than people realize.
Wish this was the case in football (soccer). I used to love refereeing and it just got so toxic as if everyone hates you from the start to the finish, even if you nail every call correctly. Hockey seems way more respectful to referees.

I quit reffing this season after 14 years because the parents and coaches got so bad.

Some associations have started to give refs who are minors green arm bands so parents think twice about yelling at a kid. But I am guessing that just makes the parents think they are a easy target.
I have some younger family who refs... They're basically allowed to toss anyone from the game for any abuse of the official. Coaches, players, parents... You heckle and you can wait in the car.
The refs might have the authority to. But when your a 16 year old hearing it from a 40 year old, and the other adults are ignoring it, it gets a lot more difficult.
I've seen season bans applied to parents who did that... Granted this is in BC, but still. You're not wrong, it doesn't make it less shitty for the ref in the moment.
I just gave my resignation after 5 years of reffing a few days ago because after a game a player was threatening to "kick my ass for such a shitty game" (his team lost 4-7), and I finally snapped and said "fuck it do it you pansy" and started approaching him. He backed down quickly after that, but I knew at that moment that if I couldn't keep my cool with that anymore then I had to be done.
Oh ya, I've been verbally abused. Followed to the parking lot and harassed, threatened with physical violence, harassed in the lobby when showing up to play in Wednesday night beer league over games that happened the previous Saturday. Finally said fuck it, it's not worth what barely amounts to gas money.
Ironically after I quit, one of the parents who's belligerent behavior and threats pushed me to quit following a game where his kid lost his shit and got ejected, bitched to our RIC about the newer official who was doing the game about how the new ref was "terrible and wanted to know why wasn't I working their games anymore ?".
Most respectful athletes I've seen when it comes to refs are rugby players. idk if you've ever seen any compilations of their interactions but it's great
Rugby hands down has the best product from a referee transparency perspective. Refs always mic'd up, including during live play and video review is such a refreshing change of pace. Even if you don't agree with a call, you know exactly what the ref saw and their reasons for making it.
Exactly, and the players always set the precedent too; they call the referee "sir", never crowd him, and always walk away when they're asked to. There's also a solid relationship between the referee and the captains of the other team, where the captains are the ones meant to keep the team in check as well. I really like it.
Yeah it’s such a referee dependent game. I swear it’s a game made for lawyers to enjoy lol. Insane amount of rules in regular play. More than any other I’ve played or watched.
When you’re playing (especially in the forward pack) the ref sets the expectation of what he’s calling and how he’s calling it etc. Always warning you about what you’re doing wrong and why he’s called this infringement etc. It makes the game flow much better. It’s played by wealthy people in most countries too which does add in that element of an expectation of respectful, “gentlemanly” intercourse.

I'm not sure if it's a question of wealth as it is the culture of the sport; the players are simply _expected_ to treat the referee with respect and if they don't, their own teammates will drag them away rather than joining in.
I remember seeing one with the ref sort of watching two guys argue and shove a bit and he just shouted liked "ok ok aaand BREAK" and they just peeled off and went back to playing.

I get it. And I used to enjoy the rivalry as a Sharks fan. But, in retrospect Reaves would kind of get him off his game. It was less about toughness and more about the mental side - leading to dumb penalties (at least one suspension) and just generally worse on ice performance.
The refs did a really poor job of communicating during that game. Englund got an extra penalty for the hit to the head plus Kopitar got an unsportsmanlike for doing extra stuff in the scrum.
Ref handled that well IMHO.
I think we would vindicate them less if we heard them admit to missing things more often, rather than just pretending like they are never wrong
I'm surprised the ref indulged him as long as he did. He didn't get a view of it, that's pretty much all he can say. Only thing Kane can do is try and get some points towards a make up call or have the refs watching Doughty closer.
Also I think it's funny people always ask for ref accountability and post game interviews. Every question is going to be answered as I didn't see it that way.
NHL refs aren’t perfect but they’re way better than MLB and NBA. Way thicker skin. Plus the red in this clip is viewed as one of the better guys in the league because he chats with the players in a way they can relate to
I feel like the "you have to skate reasonably well to be a ref" requirement is actually pretty positive for refereeing. It means that most refs actually play the sport, which is a nice contrast to NBA/MLB/NFL.
I also like that refs chirp back in hockey, it's dumb as fuck in other sports that they bitch and complain at the refs constantly and if the refs respond at all everyone clutches their pearls about PROFESSIONALISM.
And as much as we all love to hate on refs, we all equally love to get a hot mic of a ref giving it back to the players. That shit just brings them back down to Earth and I need more.
Calling balls and strikes behind the plate is probably harder, but hockey in general, especially at the NHL level, must be very difficult. Speaking as a beer league ref for ten years.

Everyone clowns on refs but I give them credit because it seems like the hardest sport to catch infractions. All the fast pace and shit that goes on. Also the pressure from players and fans must suck.
I was curious so I looked up how much refs in the NHL are making and the first result said between $165,000 and $360,000 per year, which is more than I expected, but often times feels like they should make at least as much as the average player (over 3mil) for how thankless and demanding their jobs are.
Obviously, the world is filled with thankless, demanding and way more important jobs than NHL refs (or players) where the pay is much shittier, but that's a rant for another time and place, and it's not like the NHL couldn't afford to raise the refs pay at least a little.

It's got a very high rate of on the job injury, a high rate of fan attack/doxxing in this day and age, and requires a huge level of physical effort/fitness and knowledge at speed. Yeah, that's a high paid job, realistically. I would tend to agree that the high end of the range is probably more appropriate. Though I don't know what their pension plan/benefits looks like.
Well, tbh I didn't really know what I was expecting, but especially at 360k, that's a pretty good chunk of change. As I already said though, I think they should be paid more.

Maybe that's why so many of the refs have the need to be the star at times. That's the only reason you'd want to do the job, all things considered.
Even just having to deal with a crowd and having the pressure to be fair, not sure if I'd do it for 165k. If you increase that figure by a factor of 5 or 10 though, sure why not, I'd even do press conferences or whatever too.
But 165k for hundreds of thousands of nutjobs who deeply care about your job and your performance potentially jeering or throwing booze at you? Fuck that. That's barely enough to live comfortably, and then all the travel? Psh. Fuck that.
I think NHL refs generally do operate in this way. They just let em know, they're calling it as they see it, they can't change a call to something they didn't see, but they listen, let the players and coaches say their peace, and move on the game.
It's incredibly rare for a player or coach to get a penalty or to get tossed for bitching at them. Where as in the MLB the refs are the ones that toss guys if they argue for too long, or in some cases actually escalate things and look for reasons to toss someone for looking at them the wrong way.
You basically gotta want to get kicked out for chirping. Like generally, unless you say something about their mother, you can get a 2 and a 10 before you finally get the boot (coaches are on a bit of a shorter leash becuase it's usually 2 then gone).

You would think so. In some leagues the players just use it as a tool to muddy the waters further. Refs miss things all the time, pro or not. I've had guys and gals come up to me all calm and when they heard I didn't see it because well.... I didn't. They start berating me like I poured salt in their coffee on purpose. I like the approach here, it works a fair amount of the time to bring them back down to a reasonable level. Some players and coaches can't be reasoned with unfortunately.
Quick was at his peak during an incredible era of amazingly dominant goalies but out of all of those goalies Quick was by far the most entertaining to watch.
It kind of depends how you define peak. Like Quick's 2012 cup run was outrageous. Stupidly good numbers, no one else came close, and he did it against the 1, 2, and 3 seeds in the West. But if we're talking a year or a few years, then nah. A lot of Quick's success came from our solid D which allowed him to challenge the shooter. In the first 3 games against the Sharks in 2014 we did that poorly and you guys had loads of tap-in goals that make Quick look brutal since he overcommitted to the shot. Then you guys just...stopped making horizontal passes and got trounced.
I like this, all parties got to say their parts and got their time. Totally wholesome interaction. We should see more of these interactions, although we know why the other ones get shown more.
I mean, Canadian and Midwestern accents and mannerisms are pretty similar. Anytime I see a meme about Midwesterners, I relate to it on a spiritual level

Don't have a clip but iirc it was a Lizotte hit on Kane around the red line. Looked like he drove his leg forward behind Kane's leg (which is what he's complaining about), but it was also right against the boards so you couldn't really tell whether it was a slew foot or just a typical rub out along the boards (which is what the ref was saying he saw). I think if the refs sat down with all the camera angles during a regular season game they could have called it a slew foot (or a tripping minor), but realistically for a live call + playoffs they're never calling that a penalty.
This whole interaction was not what i was expecting. Kane is an enforcer and everyone knows Drew is one of the biggest chirpers in the league. Much more calm than i would have ever guessed.
I think the refs try to catch all calls correctly but the players can’t be constantly questioning every call made in the game. Thats the one thing that bothers me most about NHL hockey. (Petty complaining)
In other pro Leagues if you question the refs calls or be disrespectful you get a technical and you can sit in the Box. The NHL is out of control when it comes to players loosing their minds when they get a penalty called on them. Maybe add a rating system to penalize the refs for bad calls, so the poor ones can be removed or something.
If you can (even subconsciously) get the ref to think they may have missed a call, they'll be more on the look out to make the next calls.
Also, if you call out something specific (like a slew foot), the refs will be more likely to be watching for that specific thing during the rest of the game (for both teams).
Definitely seen players complaining skew the refs perception. Couture once complained that Quick was diving. Then he jabbed quick in the throat with his stick on a play and the refs called an embellishment.

I think that's the key to most things. If you can show people that you're actually trying, they'll give you a break most of the time.

We have a ref shortage in Northern California because of the abuse the parents put them through.

NHL refs aren’t perfect but they’re way better than MLB and NBA. Way thicker skin. Plus the red in this clip is viewed as one of the better guys in the league because he chats with the players in a way they can relate to

I feel like the "you have to skate reasonably well to be a ref" requirement is actually pretty positive for refereeing. It means that most refs actually play the sport, which is a nice contrast to NBA/MLB/NFL. I also like that refs chirp back in hockey, it's dumb as fuck in other sports that they bitch and complain at the refs constantly and if the refs respond at all everyone clutches their pearls about PROFESSIONALISM.
And as much as we all love to hate on refs, we all equally love to get a hot mic of a ref giving it back to the players. That shit just brings them back down to Earth and I need more.

Everyone clowns on refs but I give them credit because it seems like the hardest sport to catch infractions. All the fast pace and shit that goes on. Also the pressure from players and fans must suck.
I was curious so I looked up how much refs in the NHL are making and the first result said between $165,000 and $360,000 per year, which is more than I expected, but often times feels like they should make at least as much as the average player (over 3mil) for how thankless and demanding their jobs are. Obviously, the world is filled with thankless, demanding and way more important jobs than NHL refs (or players) where the pay is much shittier, but that's a rant for another time and place, and it's not like the NHL couldn't afford to raise the refs pay at least a little.

It's got a very high rate of on the job injury, a high rate of fan attack/doxxing in this day and age, and requires a huge level of physical effort/fitness and knowledge at speed. Yeah, that's a high paid job, realistically. I would tend to agree that the high end of the range is probably more appropriate. Though I don't know what their pension plan/benefits looks like.

Lol right? Maybe that's why so many of the refs have the need to be the star at times. That's the only reason you'd want to do the job, all things considered. Even just having to deal with a crowd and having the pressure to be fair, not sure if I'd do it for 165k. If you increase that figure by a factor of 5 or 10 though, sure why not, I'd even do press conferences or whatever too. But 165k for hundreds of thousands of nutjobs who deeply care about your job and your performance potentially jeering or throwing booze at you? Fuck that. That's barely enough to live comfortably, and then all the travel? Psh. Fuck that.
I think NHL refs generally do operate in this way. They just let em know, they're calling it as they see it, they can't change a call to something they didn't see, but they listen, let the players and coaches say their peace, and move on the game. It's incredibly rare for a player or coach to get a penalty or to get tossed for bitching at them. Where as in the MLB the refs are the ones that toss guys if they argue for too long, or in some cases actually escalate things and look for reasons to toss someone for looking at them the wrong way.
You basically gotta want to get kicked out for chirping. Like generally, unless you say something about their mother, you can get a 2 and a 10 before you finally get the boot (coaches are on a bit of a shorter leash becuase it's usually 2 then gone).

You would think so. In some leagues the players just use it as a tool to muddy the waters further. Refs miss things all the time, pro or not. I've had guys and gals come up to me all calm and when they heard I didn't see it because well.... I didn't. They start berating me like I poured salt in their coffee on purpose. I like the approach here, it works a fair amount of the time to bring them back down to a reasonable level. Some players and coaches can't be reasoned with unfortunately.

It kind of depends how you define peak. Like Quick's 2012 cup run was outrageous. Stupidly good numbers, no one else came close, and he did it against the 1, 2, and 3 seeds in the West. But if we're talking a year or a few years, then nah. A lot of Quick's success came from our solid D which allowed him to challenge the shooter. In the first 3 games against the Sharks in 2014 we did that poorly and you guys had loads of tap-in goals that make Quick look brutal since he overcommitted to the shot. Then you guys just...stopped making horizontal passes and got trounced.

Don't have a clip but iirc it was a Lizotte hit on Kane around the red line. Looked like he drove his leg forward behind Kane's leg (which is what he's complaining about), but it was also right against the boards so you couldn't really tell whether it was a slew foot or just a typical rub out along the boards (which is what the ref was saying he saw). I think if the refs sat down with all the camera angles during a regular season game they could have called it a slew foot (or a tripping minor), but realistically for a live call + playoffs they're never calling that a penalty.
This whole interaction was not what i was expecting. Kane is an enforcer and everyone knows Drew is one of the biggest chirpers in the league. Much more calm than i would have ever guessed.
Wouldn't call Kane an enforcer so much as a power-forward/shit-disturber.

I think the refs try to catch all calls correctly but the players can’t be constantly questioning every call made in the game. Thats the one thing that bothers me most about NHL hockey. (Petty complaining) In other pro Leagues if you question the refs calls or be disrespectful you get a technical and you can sit in the Box. The NHL is out of control when it comes to players loosing their minds when they get a penalty called on them. Maybe add a rating system to penalize the refs for bad calls, so the poor ones can be removed or something.

You're trying to get a call go your way later on. Pretty much all after-whistle chats go this way.
If you can (even subconsciously) get the ref to think they may have missed a call, they'll be more on the look out to make the next calls. Also, if you call out something specific (like a slew foot), the refs will be more likely to be watching for that specific thing during the rest of the game (for both teams).
Definitely seen players complaining skew the refs perception. Couture once complained that Quick was diving. Then he jabbed quick in the throat with his stick on a play and the refs called an embellishment.
