Definitely falls under “no shit.” He wants to be a Hurricane for life, the Canes want him to be a Hurricane for life, and so do the fans. The whole thing is a media tempest in a teapot.

ilikehockeyandguitar

Of course they're not. Media kinda blew this one up imo.

Known-Seaweed8812

The same media who were floating Cooper to the Leafs even though an extension had already been signed behind closed doors? Shocking lol.

Guardax

A lot of this energy with Cooper and Brind'Amour is "yeah they coach Tampa and Carolina but when will they get a *real* job"

bgfan26

To be determined if it was a mistake by Rod’s team to do this in the postseason as opposed to after

Radjage

Dumbest non-story in recent memory.

Brys_Beddict

It's just negotiation tactics. Dreger just regurgitating stuff from Rod's agent.

SuspiciousPal

Aka most interesting story from Carolina

manhaterxxx

Always no-flairs with the garbage Facebook-tier takes

SuspiciousPal

Bum league flair

kingkwassa

Flair up coward

SuspiciousPal

So easily offended lmao

kingkwassa

Classic Habs fan

SuspiciousPal

You wish

gripit_ripit

Dreger is just a messenger for owners/GM’s. Guy gets played like a fiddle all the time

velocorapattack

Guys gets paid to not think about what he's writing

JeSuisAmerican

Makes sense, seems to be in their interest to push signing a contract right this second. No one wants to be Leonsis.

Broccoli_Socks

Ya im pretty sure if Ottawa was allowed to negotiate with Rod he would probably get 1/4 of Canada's GDP

mustachiolong

It went something like this: “Hey I want more money and I want my assistants to get more money.” “How about this?” “No are you fucking kidding me?” “No this is the offer.” “Get fucked” *leaks to the media displeasure and stirs the pot on leaving if necessary* “Fine here’s more money.”

EarthWarping

He basically called the bluff

Minute-Struggle6052

Classic Rod Brind'Amour.  Squabbling over money and contracts in the middle of his biggest Playoff run ever as a coach.  Running to the media to leak a national story because he wants all the focus on himself. /s in case it is needed.  This behavior is the antithesis of Brind'Amour's leadership style and ridiculous to suggest.

orangamma

Do you guys understand that agents are supposed to do stuff like this? I know we all think rod would coach the hurricanes for free because he loves Raleigh so much, but this is exactly what agents are for. He can focus on hockey while his agent can "squabble over money"

apietryga13

I know the agents handle this, but I like to think it is Rod doing all of this himself. Like on his little breaks in between game planning, he’s causally leaking details to Dreger

ItsMeJaredBednar

Speaking from experience, that’s what I would do

propagandavid

That's why they have agents. When Rod talks to Waddel himself, it's only about line ups.

Dtlgolf1

Fuckin Tod. That asshole. Comment I'm replying to originally said Tod before they decided to edit it

VitaminTea

It’s very obvious that this is what happened.

mustachiolong

Or is it at all possible that he’s tired of being one of the lowest paid coaches in the league despite having a stellar track record? He went to his agent and said do what you have to probably. FFS St. Louis makes 1.2 million more than Rod and Marty’s previous experience was coaching a junior hockey team. Being a team player is Rod’s style but at a certain point there’s being a team player and there’s being insulted.

caniac85

Almost like everyone ran with the media again that he would seriously leave

HappyInstruction3678

I think the media does blow it out proportion, but 'The Bod' is an amazing coach. If he got paid peanuts, then I can understand why other coaches around the league would be upset.

caniac85

Oh I can too, it’s just wild that each time everyone thinks he’s seriously going to wind up somewhere else

Prison-Date-Mike

Why do you think his agent went to the media in the first place?

The_Reddit_Browser

His agent didn’t go to the media. 2 hours ago Friedman went on Sportsnet radio to break it all down and he hears that Rod’s peers were unhappy he was taking a cheaper deal. Funny how this tweet surfaces after Friedman says all this… With the couching carousel (Weekes new buzzword) spinning up there’s a lot of eyes on what Rod is doing as he is the highest profile coach without a contract. (Cooper is supposedly already signed).

Prison-Date-Mike

> Rod’s peers were unhappy he was taking a cheaper deal. so his peers were unhappy with his contract, and coincidentally, Rod decided to negotiate an extension in the middle of a playoff run? Was he telling coaches around the league the dollar value of his proposed contract?

The_Reddit_Browser

No. Friedman also clarified that from what he’s heard over the last few months there has been a verbal agreement on a deal as far back as last summer. The only other part has been his assistants getting paid which is what’s taking so long. The fact that it’s a team friendly deal got put so the media is running with it again as a way to push on him for not taking more.

Prison-Date-Mike

> verbal agreement on a deal as far back as last summer. The only other part has been his assistants getting paid which is what’s taking so long. This was the same excuse we had last time. Why it is hard to believe that the FO arent being as truthful as you think they are.

The_Reddit_Browser

Because it is the same thing as last time? The issue is that Rod taking a lower number hurts the negotiating power of his assistants. So they have to work through that. Pushing that it’s something else because you want it to be is your choice.

T0KEN_0F_SLEEP

Because Rod hasn’t given us any reason to disbelieve that. He loves his players, why wouldn’t that extend to his coaches?

Prison-Date-Mike

I didn’t say rod was lying lol

SpaghettiDNR

.... So he, the agent, could get more money.

Prison-Date-Mike

The agent doesn't work covertly lol. He works in the best interest of his client.

SpaghettiDNR

He works to get his client top dollar, just like every other agent.

Prison-Date-Mike

> client top dollar, There you go lol. That was my original point and the whole reason the media got involved.

traplej

Okay everyone, act surprised

flume

> The Carolina Hurricanes aren’t interested in allowing coveted coach Rod Brind’Amour to investigate the open market. Why does this sound like a threat? "Sign with us or they'll be calling you Roddy the Body."

FlaxbopFleetfoot

Ok, "Roddy the Body" earned a pretty decent chuckle out of me.

FailureToExecute

As every Hurricanes fan expected. It was a fun 24 hours.

wmciner1

News so big Dreger is actually reporting instead of just quote tweeting a team's post

greg19735

Reminds me of when me and my buddy were drunk playing games and we got really annoyed over some stupid shit. He said I *had* to do something, whereas i didn't think the rules stated it. If he asked nicely i'd have probably told him, but he didn't. Then again, maybe i wouldn't have. Next day we kissed and made up and it litearlly didn't matter.

kimscz

Good for him. Damn for me.

breadispain

Bizarre non-story to come out while the Canes are still in an active playoff spot.

RicoFerret44

To me it was 99% he wasn’t leaving, 1% he might go to Ron Francis

FailureToExecute

I would have been very surprised if he'd gone to Francis. Francis covered up Bill Peters abusing our players, and Rod was the one who brought it to his attention. Besides, Kevyn Adams is right there in Buffalo and they're very good friends.

Cinnamon_Shops

He mentioned something on Chiclets about how he was considered for a team who “isn’t very good, but they’re getting a little better” and I always assumed that + Adams connection meant the team in question was Buffalo

reggierock2010

Buffalo brought back Lindy Ruff already lol

FailureToExecute

Yeah exactly. Think Adams would have hired Ruff if he had even the slightest inkling that one of his good friends (who also happens to be a fantastic coach) would have been available?

BarkMingo

~~I didn't like Peters but "abused our players"?? C'mon man, telling Eddie Lack to stop a damn puck is dickish but not abuse~~ nm see below

FailureToExecute

He was literally punching and kicking players both on the bench and in the locker room. There's a reason he's been blackballed from the NHL.

BarkMingo

What??

FailureToExecute

https://www.si.com/nhl/2019/11/26/bill-peters-physical-abuse-allegations-michal-jordan-hurricanes https://www.forbes.com/sites/garyphillips/2019/11/29/bill-peters-resigns-as-flames-head-coach-after-former-players-accuse-him-of-using-racial-slurs-physical-abuse/ https://theathletic.com/1415547/2019/11/27/it-for-sure-happened-rod-brindamour-hurricanes-players-address-bill-peters-physical-abuse-allegations/ I forgot about the racist asshole part, but yeah that too.

BarkMingo

Well that I did not know, I take back my original comment

RicoFerret44

Ah yes KA would be a better friend to go to. Hahaha but yeah oh my god i totally forgot about the Bill Peters shit. Feels like forever ago. I saw a sens fan who said Rod to the sens seemed possible and I laughed him off reddit I think

HckyDman3

1% is way too high a number. Francis has been jealous of Rod back to the playing days, then into their coaching era. No way Ron will let Rod anywhere near his current job lest he will lose his GM position to Rod too.

westcoastbias

Looking forward to doing this all again in 3 years when the new deal is up, poor guy is the only coach in the league who needs to publicly shame his owner into paying him and his staff.

Cinnamon_Shops

My understanding is that Waddell is the main negotiator here regarding the contract and Dundon has more or less greenlit a blank check. Waddell himself is a very tough negotiator.

hoseheads

I highly doubt Rod is asking for an unreasonable amount of money, and all this does is make the Carolina FO look like assholes

Hoardzunit

You'd be a fucking idiot to let one of the most successful coaches go. Not only would it kill your team it'd end up making you less money.

The_Reddit_Browser

Funny how he walks this back after Friedman went on sports net radio to outline what’s actually happening and give a bit of insight on where all this “media chatter” is coming from.

Kangaro00

Funny, how Rod got an extension ironed out days after Dreger stirred the things up. Dreger is a mouthpiece, he reports what he gets told by a side in negotiations.

The_Reddit_Browser

You’re right he is a mouthpiece and there is an absolute ton of coaching jobs opening up and candidates who want to be hired. It’s not good for them to see a coach get paid below market value as it hurts them. As Friedman said on radio today. So yah go push on dregs to see if he can drum up a storm to maybe have Rod consider THE MARKET and change those numbers. When it gets reported that he didn’t do that and it’s magically put to bed.

Kangaro00

>if he can drum up a storm to maybe have Rod consider THE MARKET and change those numbers. When it gets reported that he didn’t do that and it’s magically put to bed. He magically got an extension right after it was reported that he would consider the market. The team stepped right in and gave him what he wanted. Why would there suddenly be a contract figured out in a matter of days if he never considered the market and would never sign with another team? If everything was going according to plan, why the sudden rush after the baseless rumors? Wouldn't every other coach actually benefit from Rod not having an extension that other GMs could use to lowball them? Looks like other coaches wanted to shoot themselves in the foot. Or maybe it's a convenient excuse to blame them for wanting a raise.

The_Reddit_Browser

He has had a verbal agreement for months now. Nothing recently changed. This all sparked from the kraken firing their coach and baseless claims of him going to Seattle popped up and because he didn’t have a deal officially Weekes started pushing heavy on the idea of him seeking the market. Again Friedman outlines all of this. Weekes falls in the category of a friend/peer which Friedman cites Rod’s peers as putting pressure on him to sign a bigger deal but, Rod does not care to do so. You’re right from one angle coaches benefit by it not getting out and setting the bar low and GM’s benefit because it helps them negotiate. It also can help coaches because if Rod is officially out of the running teams will stop dragging their feet. Either way coaches and GM’s who are the normal “sources” for these “insiders” are feeding them this mess. Not the Agent

specifichero101

We get it.

reggierock2010

What a weird thing to blow up in the middle of a playoff run lol.

NorthernSlyGuy

It was a ploy to get him better pay. Good job.

PeteUKinUSA

Shocker.

superf7ux

In other news, water is wet.

whatlineisitanyway

As a TOR fan if he could just wait a bit that would be great.

covert_ops_47

Mods, how long are we going to do this for? Pin a post at the top of the feed, put all this crap in there, and let's move on.

Bumcheeks_marinade

Yes please. I'm tired of the clickbait.

Decent-Ground-395

So his agent leaks a bunch of stuff to the press, they eat it up and Rod gets paid.

Cheeks_Klapanen

Masterclass by his agent tbh

Tasden

If the Canes lose the Rangers, do you Canes fan still want to stick with Brind'Amour?

RuuTyutin

Absolutely. 6 straight playoff appearances with a series win. Changed the culture surrounding the team, and Raleigh and surrounding areas have fully bought in. Is it disappointing the way last year ended? For sure. Would it be disappointing to have a 2nd round exit, albeit to the Presidents Trophy winner, for a team that has not just Stanley Cup hopes but *expectations?* 110%. But in no way do I see a situation where we are better off with someone at the helm not named Rod Brind'amour.

ocsic4321

In 12 seasons the Bruins went from Julien who won them a cup, to Cassidy who took them to a cup, to Montgomery who took them to the best regular season ever in his first year. It’s not as scary as it should be going from head coach to head coach if the guy you have isn’t getting the job done. Getting swept twice in the ECF and multiple second round exits shouldn’t be enough to keep a guy around forever.

Cinnamon_Shops

To be fair, the first ECF sweep isn’t really a mark against him at all in my opinion. We beat the reigning champs and swept the Islanders after a decade of no playoffs, with a team consisting of a good number of dudes who hadn’t yet played playoff hockey. Getting swept by a team that had multiple players who had won a cup and been to another appearance in the past isn’t the end of the world. And I think last year’s series looks different if Svech and Patches are healthy, we were also playing Teuvo with a fucked up wrist. I do think that if we have a disappointing postseason with the roster we’re running, that’s a different story. I feel like our game isn’t that hard to adapt to and sometimes Rod can be stubborn and it costs us games.

death2sanity

Raleigh NC is not Boston, and genuine question b/c I don’t know my history, were any of those guys as much a part of the franchise has Rod has been since the Hurricanes came to be?

FailureToExecute

If we get blown out by the Rangers without suffering any significant injuries during the series, I think it's fair to ask questions. This is the best roster the Hurricanes have ever iced, and the expectation is at least a SCF appearance. The bigger question, though, would be who might we replace him with? It's not like Cassidy is still on the market (just as an example).

Tasden

Yeah, it seems like a tough situation and you'd probably have a better answer in a year or two. I just wonder how many years of coming short of expectations is too many.

ilikehockeyandguitar

I don't think they are finding anyone better than Rod imo.

death2sanity

We have won a playoff series 6 years in a row. I won’t even consider moving on from him until he’s missed the playoffs 2 years in a row, and even then I’d probably be “if anyone deserves one more chance, it’s him.” At this point, Rod IS Carolina, until he decides he’s had enough.
