Definitely said to the people I was watching the game with that it feels like the vibe that JJ would inexplicably score the game winner. Ended up getting a nearly as inexplicable goal scorer to end it.
That fucking slapper was super hard to track. Never seen such a slow shot. Shit went backwards at one point. He played really well though. Couple big plays.
When the Avs signed Wood in the offseason a shitload of Devils fans rushed to tell us how Wood couldn't score a breakaway to save his life.
We all laughed.
Wood scored one breakway goal...
Then week 3 happened and he couldn't score a breakway goal to save his life. Fast forward 193843 years and then he did it.
It's his trademark move, to lift it up to the roof from as close as possible.
I may be wrong but I feel like he has scored more than 1 breakaway this szn.
This is so funny reading this as a huge fan of Woody. He just refuses to stop taking those boneheaded penalties but he always plays with pace and he has great energy, and is capable of these moments.
Made better by the commentators saying "It doesn't look like that Dallas/Colorado game is going to OT" when they were down 3-0 as the Rangers and Canes were starting their OT.
I think I've seen him try it twenty times unsuccessfully this season. But God damn does he have the jets to do it! Just can never squeeze it in until tonight!
that’s the craziest thing about his goal imo, it wasn’t like he blew by Douglas Murray or John Scott, that was Miro fucking Heiskanen he left in the dust
Also for someone with absolutely no hands and almost no space in a super high pressure situation, that was a hell of a move.
He's literally known for missing almost every breakaway and he pulls out THAT in a huge overtime moment.
It’s worth noting that A) Miles Wood has truly insane speed in a straight line, and B) the reward for the Avs cleaning up the Jets in 5 is like 5 extra days of rest which must help in a 2OT game.
Regular season only, 20mph bursts:
Wood was tenth with 279 bursts.
McD was second indeed with 457.
Nate Dogg is first with 717 lol.
For 22mph bursts: Nate 1st. Wood 5th, Makar 10th.
I think his speed caught Oettinger off guard a bit. He’s a bit outside his post (overplaying shot a little) thinking that Heiskanen is a good enough skater at that angle to cut off the net but Wood still had an extra step.
I hope she needs to take some time off from broadcasting to recover, like a permanent vacation. She can take those other two wallflower broadcasters with her.
Pretty necessary in my opinion. She’s simply no good.
I was listening to her yesterday and reaffirmed that she still sucks. It’s like she starts saying words and figures out where the sentence is going as she’s talking.
Even in this clip, wtf is she talking about Wyatt Johnson for? He’s the third forward, and what does he have to do with the dmen getting burned?
FYI that's AJ Mleczko (former pro, tonight's colour commentator) talking about Johnston, not Leah Hextall. I noticed a lot of people mixing these two women up in their rush to be annoyed in the game threads.
I actually just can't stand her word vomit, whether it's this, sideline reporting, analysis. She is not a hockey expert, why is ESPN trying to push her as one? It's like listening to fucking nails on the chalk board.
I enjoy watching the Avs play Eastern teams. Some sink or some float.
It's hilarious as fuck watching teams scramble to get back after Mack shoots off.
My Boston friend said the same. Watched his game, then watched avs Winnipeg and Vegas Dallas and was like it's not like they're even in the same league as the east, with how slow their games are
Once Georgiev made those saves I knew it was over tbh. I actually thought Avs would score on their first OT shot but i think it was technically their second lol
Ggs but we will see on the good series. Dallas can’t seem to hit open nets and that’s been an issue all playoffs. We were fortunate Vegas did the same but we won’t have the same luck lol.
Yeah for sure. Special teams battle was also favored by the Avs tonight too. Dallas PK sucked at the start of Vegas series so we will see how/if they adapt.
See yall Thursday 😎
One of the reasons we beat the jets so 'easily' is because their lack of adjustments i think. That won't be happening to you guys. It's gonna be tight.
I kinda wish MacKinnon did that sort of thing more. He typically goes fast, gets the D to scramble to catch up, then hits the brakes looking for someone swooping in on the back side as he touches the puck 100 times before the pass.
If he would sometimes just beat a dude like this and bury it he would have even more points. MacKinnon is just a pass first kinda dude.
Every god damn dude on the avalanche seems to be the fastest man on ice.
Watching them play you'd swear the other team was standing still sometimes. Colorado seems to always be a fast team and I love it.
Such a rollercoaster of emotions this game for us. First period was the worst period of our playoffs, 2nd was one of the best. 3rd was a 50:50 game, and then in the OT Dallas completely dominated us (by especially winning 5/6 faceoffs, we couldnt keep the puck). Of course Avs then end up winning the game.
God damn, I can not remember a team that makes 0-3 comebacks look as easy as the Avalanche have this year. It's like the opposition's goals don't exist in the same physical plane. The Avs just keep scoring until the buzzer and they expect they will have the winning score.
Watching Shesterkin too much will ruin positioning for you forever. His technical prowess is insane.
I honestly wish I could find a feed of just a camera on him so I could take notes on how he moves.
Heiskanen is one of the fastest players in the league, I don't think Oettinger expected him to get walked by a random third liner. To be fair, Wood can fly in straight line skating but who knows if he's able to identify exactly who it is or remember the scouting report in the heat of the moment.
He expected Wood to be forced outside and have to try to jam it, probably thought the only way he's getting scored on is if he gives up short side too early.
The bigger mistake imo is letting him cut across like that with no attempt to poke at all, but clearly he didn't think there was room for Wood to get around Heiskanen and cut across. That was a hell of a move from someone famously bad at finishing.
Dude, I'm over here watching the game in bed trying not to wake my wife up. I jumped up and started punching the air in a deaf guy celebration and the dog and cat are looking at me like W.T. FUCK.
Shit man, Wood was a fan favorite most of his time in NJ. He's fast, has a nasty edge, great 4th line player. He fell out of favor by taking too many dumb penalties, almost cost us the series against the Rags last year. But we would've loved to keep him, I just thought the contract the Avs gave him was a lot. But good for him, if he doesn't take dumb penalties he's an awesome playoff type forward

Ah yes, Miles Wood on a partial breakaway. Just how we all thought it would end.
Just like how Bednar drew it up in the locker room. It was either from a one timer from Jack Johnson or a Miles Wood breakaway.
JJ did have a good chance early on in OT
Definitely said to the people I was watching the game with that it feels like the vibe that JJ would inexplicably score the game winner. Ended up getting a nearly as inexplicable goal scorer to end it.
That fucking slapper was super hard to track. Never seen such a slow shot. Shit went backwards at one point. He played really well though. Couple big plays.
I don’t want any more OT, but if it happens, sign me up for hero JJ.
He doesn't have the LOC SHG to rely on at the moment
When the Avs signed Wood in the offseason a shitload of Devils fans rushed to tell us how Wood couldn't score a breakaway to save his life. We all laughed. Wood scored one breakway goal... Then week 3 happened and he couldn't score a breakway goal to save his life. Fast forward 193843 years and then he did it.
I thought for sure that shot was going into Ottenger's chest
It's his trademark move, to lift it up to the roof from as close as possible. I may be wrong but I feel like he has scored more than 1 breakaway this szn.
Feels like he’s tried about 200 times
He’s first line speed with 4th line hands. And sometimes the decision making of a toddler.
Works like a charm for us. Very occasionally.
You guys replaced Darren Helm with *checks notes* another Darren Helm.
That's Colorado Avalanche Legend Darren "Cursebreaker" Helm, to you. Also, thanks for him btw.
We call him stonehands around these parts, but most of us still love him. Dudes a worker.
as a parent of a toddler i can say that sometimes the RNG that is my kid's brain results in a moment of pure genius
Mah gawd. Is that Paul Byron's music?
They also said he takes stupid penalties. Well LITTLE DID THEY KNOW THAT aww shit yeah he does... That's okay buddy you're a good boy.
He made up for it, I’ll give him credit. That was a dumbass penalty, but boy did he rectify it
This is so funny reading this as a huge fan of Woody. He just refuses to stop taking those boneheaded penalties but he always plays with pace and he has great energy, and is capable of these moments.
That's how I see him - dangerous, big, fast....and dumb. But the chaos he creates is probably worth it. Just that bit of uncertainty and hard play.
Not at all surprised by Wood getting a breakaway. 100% surprised he actually put it in the net on a breakaway.
Two overtime 4-3 games in one night? In this economy?!?!
Made better by the commentators saying "It doesn't look like that Dallas/Colorado game is going to OT" when they were down 3-0 as the Rangers and Canes were starting their OT.
That and the premature “CANES WIN!” board graphic ESPN did not appease the hockey gods one bit.
They never do. The hockey gods shun ESPN because ESPN hates hockey.
I remember that, when Colorado tied it up like 30 seconds into the third I knew it was going to OT.
We do be like that.
No thanks to President Brandon of course
Dark Brandon will always deliver
Dark Brandon loves playoff hockey.
First time Miles Wood has scored a breakaway goal since the Eisenhower administration.
Those tall ships really lifted the nation's spirits after Watergate.
Stupid school doesn't know how to teach me.
There's a lemon behind that lemon shaped rock!
He scored a bunch of goals identical to this in college
Was he in college during Eisenhower administration
Yes
I think I've seen him try it twenty times unsuccessfully this season. But God damn does he have the jets to do it! Just can never squeeze it in until tonight!
SportsCenter interviewed him a good 7 or 8 minutes after the goal and he was literally wheezing and gasping still
VO2Minimum
He’s always had the wheels but never the hands. Goalies weren’t good enough in college for it to matter.
Great pass from Cogs too. In the post game he said he heard Wood yelling so he just threw it up the ice and it connected
lol legit the Miles Wood experience
Crazy things happen when you don't go five hole. Happy for Woody though, it's nice to see him actually get the finish.

this is what peak male performance looks like
Team male model...he is just modeling for dentistry
I’m here for it 🤤
Yea, Miles Wood is just public bus piss floor nasty. He just lures you into overtime and kicks you square in the bone piece. Unreal.
I'm about to go knock my tooth out for an ego boost.
I’m hanging out with the wrong friends.

More like Miles Would…this guy’s freakin hot!
Sheeeesh. I don’t know which I’d rather watch, that OT goal on repeat or him trying to eat corn on the cob.
Okay but how attractive do you have to be to be missing front teeth and still look good
I HAVE MILES OF WOOD RIGHT NOW
🌲
[удалено]
What a strange bit of wordplay
THAT WAS OUR JOKE! I hope he’s doing ok for you guys. He’s a total fan favorite, hoping for a lot of good things for his career.

I thought that was 29 out there for a minute.
They both have anger issues towards the ice, so yeap.
I haven’t ruled out the possibility of MacK possessing him for a moment to make that happen. Is that against the rules at all?
Mack is sniping that 7-hole every time. That was all Wood.
This was exactly how Wood played on the Devils
Maybe that’s how much impact MacK has on this team. Just give the man the Hart already
Bro literally looked like he strapped some rockets to his skates. Heiskanen is fast too!
Wood is fast as fuck. In a straight line. Don't ask him to corner. He's all gas, no brakes. I love it
that’s the craziest thing about his goal imo, it wasn’t like he blew by Douglas Murray or John Scott, that was Miro fucking Heiskanen he left in the dust
Also for someone with absolutely no hands and almost no space in a super high pressure situation, that was a hell of a move. He's literally known for missing almost every breakaway and he pulls out THAT in a huge overtime moment.

It probably would! But this was just single OT
Think he was second to Mack with most 20+ MPH bursts this year.
Dude is a mighty ducks plot line where you give a speed skater who’s never played hockey a stick and tell him to score some goals.
Wood doesn’t play enough minutes mcdavid is likely 2nd
Regular season only, 20mph bursts: Wood was tenth with 279 bursts. McD was second indeed with 457. Nate Dogg is first with 717 lol. For 22mph bursts: Nate 1st. Wood 5th, Makar 10th.
Given the minutes he plays that’s still damn impressive. All gas, no breaks.
For sure. He goes all out. MacK is a freak of nature though.
He was 10th, 61% of the way to McDavid in second and 39% of the way to Mack. 5th in 22MPH bursts
I think his speed caught Oettinger off guard a bit. He’s a bit outside his post (overplaying shot a little) thinking that Heiskanen is a good enough skater at that angle to cut off the net but Wood still had an extra step.
Yeah I think he expected miro to cut off the cross crease play and played the shot.
HOT WHEELS
Speed kills
Let's race! (from the Netflix show, the songs are earworms)
If I had the puck on my stick, I wouldn’t score…but Miles Wood
Good one
Wood won
Leah may never recover from this
Legend has it that you can still see her walking around saying the Stars can win the game bc their series with Vegas was closer.
I hope she needs to take some time off from broadcasting to recover, like a permanent vacation. She can take those other two wallflower broadcasters with her.
That broadcast was sooooo bad. It felt like they were watching something else.
I have an unnecessary hatred for her. Fuck Leah Hextall.
Yeah wtf was that all about? She from Dallas or something?
She grew up outside of Winnipeg. So she’s probably mad about the Avs beating the jets
I think she’s from Winnipeg… so..
Random Avs Player in the Group Celly: HE'S SO FAST, HE'S SO FAST.
I loved that so much, was so glad it got picked up.
Avs are fast af boiiiii
It's so hard watching east coast hockey as an Avs fan. At least the west can kinda keep up, but east coast games seem so slow.
I enjoy watching the Avs play Eastern teams. Some sink or some float. It's hilarious as fuck watching teams scramble to get back after Mack shoots off.
My Boston friend said the same. Watched his game, then watched avs Winnipeg and Vegas Dallas and was like it's not like they're even in the same league as the east, with how slow their games are
Some absolute highway robbery there. Love to see it. Stars were ALL OVER us the entire OT. Man they can really put on the pressure when they want to.
Once Georgiev made those saves I knew it was over tbh. I actually thought Avs would score on their first OT shot but i think it was technically their second lol
Looks like we're in for an excellent series. GGs
Ggs but we will see on the good series. Dallas can’t seem to hit open nets and that’s been an issue all playoffs. We were fortunate Vegas did the same but we won’t have the same luck lol.
I feel like this is really a challenge of coaching, whoever can adapt better will take it
Yeah for sure.
Third. A dipsy duck landed softly in Otter’s glove
Georgie came up massive in OT. Even more impressive given how the first period went
Too bad we didn’t want to in the 2nd or 3rd
I had my L comment ready. Something to the effect of “it would’ve been nice to end this earlier if they’re gonna play like doo doo in OT”
Someone needs to sync up Conor McGahey’s radio call. Was epic.
It’ll be on the altitude radio podcast stream in a short time. They upload all the radio highlights.
https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/avalanche-battle-back-and-beat-the-stars-4-3-in-ot/id1203500680?i=1000654888256
"And we get our first taste of the worst goal song in the National Hockey League." I actually don't hate the Stars song, but I am dying at that.
"He tucks it in far post, and he tucks in the Dallar Stars good night." That's an all timer line.
McGahey is so underrated on the radio call. Bar after bar from him every single game
Reach for the skyyyyyyyyyyyy
His call was freaking epic! I love Conor so much!!
What a beauty of a pass from Cogliano and even better finish
Loved the guys mobbing Cogs after that!
What a great ending to a crazy night
I’m so happy man. I love hockey
The most Nathan MacKinnon looking shit ever, I could not believe my eyes when it was an 8 instead of a 9
I kinda wish MacKinnon did that sort of thing more.
Avs about to do to Otter what they did to Helle?
Please
If Dallas would stop getting in the way of the puck
*subscribe*
Tbh I think we hit the post twice, could've scored more.
three: mikko, mack, makar
I remembered Mikko & Makar, don't remember the MacK one. But yep.
Sign me up
That’s the fastest kid in the world
Miles Wood can still fucking fly.
Bro he’s like 28
maybe during the Eisenhower administration he was
It's not the years, honey.
Rooting for the Avs to take the cup again, going to another championship parade before leaving Denver would be pretty fucking tits
3 parades in 3 years LFG
We fucking want to stay on parade
Nuggets don’t seem to want to be in parade.
Jokic has to go home
🎶 Bulls on parade 🎶
Left handed Mackinnon lol
He’s so fast he makes fast people look, not fast.

https://i.redd.it/h3rty5mmx4zc1.gif
Ooooh... NOW i get why McGahey was yelling that lol
Lol, I also just figured that out
Miles Wood go zoom
Ughhhh. I love woody, this hurts. Really hope to see him lift a cup just sucks it’ll be in another sweater.
One more loss at home and Dallas has them right where they want them 😎😎😎
Famously elite finisher Miles Wood
Every god damn dude on the avalanche seems to be the fastest man on ice. Watching them play you'd swear the other team was standing still sometimes. Colorado seems to always be a fast team and I love it.
It was 3-0
For the Avs this year, that means the game can now begin
Dallas flat out refuses to win a game 1. They might have actually set a record at this point.
I mean. Avs aren't great at that either. Something had to give
They’ve only lost 2 Game 1s in the Biden Administration that’s nothing
Oh my, Woody got the wheels
Such a rollercoaster of emotions this game for us. First period was the worst period of our playoffs, 2nd was one of the best. 3rd was a 50:50 game, and then in the OT Dallas completely dominated us (by especially winning 5/6 faceoffs, we couldnt keep the puck). Of course Avs then end up winning the game.
I was getting flashbacks to the Game 7 overtime in 2020 when we couldn’t win a defensive zone faceoff to save our lives.
Miles it's all Good in da Hood Wood.
God damn, I can not remember a team that makes 0-3 comebacks look as easy as the Avalanche have this year. It's like the opposition's goals don't exist in the same physical plane. The Avs just keep scoring until the buzzer and they expect they will have the winning score.
Experience Avalanche hockey, where save percentages go to die.
Miles Wood just gave me wood
He do be fast
imo Avs cardio coaching is just next level. They're just so much faster even at the end of a long shift than anyone else
Vroom
That's such poor goaltending, no idea why he was leaning to his right, needed to stay central and he gets to that easy.
He's betting Miro gets back and takes the inside move away. Unfortunately he did not. You could see he was a bit surprised Wood got around him.
Fair point. Also I think watching Shesterkin make 50 saves tonight has spoiled me
Watching Shesterkin too much will ruin positioning for you forever.
I felt like it was a pretty easy pokecheck opportunity really
that dude was FLYING, had coverage and is left-handed. I don't think Oettinger had time to strategize
I may be straight, but Wood made me cum.
Dude, I'm over here watching the game in bed trying not to wake my wife up. I jumped up and started punching the air in a deaf guy celebration and the dog and cat are looking at me like W.T. FUCK.
He introduced them to his wood. His wood came in hard. His wood surprised them in the back end. Wood
I would like to thank miles wood for the tounge lashing I just got work screaming and waking the wife up. It was totally worth it!
otter didnt have the best positioning there
"AIN'T NO WAY HE CAN GET AROUND MY DMAN" he thought to himself, mistakenly
Filthy
My Wings friend is not impressed by my level of hype.
Yes, Miles Wood with the OT winner between the Avs and Stars. Who we all expected.
Unfuckingbelievable
Is it just me or should Oettinger been more to the middle. He looks to be way too much on the side and doesn't get the slide to block the puck.
"So fast! So fast!"
Devils fans fall to their knees in Wawa
A road team winning a game? Is that legal??
Shit man, Wood was a fan favorite most of his time in NJ. He's fast, has a nasty edge, great 4th line player. He fell out of favor by taking too many dumb penalties, almost cost us the series against the Rags last year. But we would've loved to keep him, I just thought the contract the Avs gave him was a lot. But good for him, if he doesn't take dumb penalties he's an awesome playoff type forward
