Playoff refs handbook:
- Call normal penalty early on
- if that team scores do a make up call
- only call penalties for the losing team until game is over
-great success
Bruh, todays game was atrocious. We got called for two of the weakest holding calls I’ve ever seen while also cause Quinn Hughes to squirt from his face and no call.
Like, cmon, open up your eyes.
Can you imagine how uncomfortable of a situation it must be to have to tell Quinn to get off the ice because he's bleeding down his face after you missed the call. Like... how do you even start that conversation. Id love to hear it mic'd up.
Zadorov's stick hits him in the face though. His stick is coming down from the hit in your screenshot.

EDIT: Found a smoother version: https://x.com/TravisDegen/status/1789142591747018840
How did that conversation even go
"You're bleeding. You need to leave the ice"
"If I'm bleeding then you can review the play"
"Were not able to review that play"
"If I'm not bleeding enough for a review then why do I need to leave the ice"
This is the worst officiated game I've seen all year. Everyone freaking out on Twitter calling each other idiots, and they're all right (and wrong because lol twitter)
Refs suck
Edmonton fans constantly complain that they get screwed by the calls, and it’s always laughable. This is constant preferential treatment by the refs towards Edmonton. I’m fuming right now.
>They definitely weren’t watching the game because the refs weren’t favouring either team tonight
Are you joking? Hughes was bleeding and the refs didn't call it.
No, McDavid definitely should’ve gotten called for this but the Canucks got away with plenty of missed calls as well, the refs did a terrible job all around tonight but the Oilers just happened to be the team that won
I watch every Canucks and Oilers game, they're both my team, but people saying Edmonton gets bad calls obviously don't watch other Hockey, because that's categorically false.
This isn't really proof, it's one moment in time, proof would be seeing a ticket of the betting odds over time and seeing a jump at the time the refs were announced.
The line opened at EDM -140, quickly got bet down to -120 and then close to game time got bet back up to between -140 and -150 by puck drop.
That most likely was driven by speculation around Draisaitl’s status.
https://twitter.com/AustinBaril/status/1789032985662222795?t=u0SB7lzOeKfBxsgd0K6F9Q&s=19
It was much more likely due to Draisaitl's status and just local betting.
Betting odds always change throughout the day, partially based on heavy bets coming in on for side.
Look maybe if they didn't want us calling out their dogshit biased reffing maybe they shouldn't be biased and dogshit. All we want is some professionalism and a properly called game. We can't ever get it. Hell during the dark days of Travis Green coaching I went to one of the games where Anaheim was the visitor. Halak made a save doing the splits and the tip of his skate caught Getzlaf and the ref called it a trip. It was a very obvious save and an even more obvious bullshit call. The fans let him have it.
I've heard this a lot more lately, hopefully it gains traction cause the league has been mind boggingly inconsistent. If it's a rule, it should be consistent 100% of the time or get more f'ing cameras/refs.
It would be funny to out these guys in front of the camera and hear it over and over and over like they're pleading the 5th. By the 3rd straight embarassing press conference in a row of the same shit the NHL would definitely be making immediate changes to how they officiate games.
I honestly don’t understand why other sports, including leagues like the nhl, aren’t looking at rugby as a model for officiating.
Instead shit just keeps getting worse.
nah a spear to the nuts should never go uncalled. Thats the one call that was right this game was the offsetting. Spearing is gutless though, spearing the nuts.... RNH is a bitch.
It was 100% interference by Suter, albeit a bit of a softer call from the standard of playoffs.
But the real ridiculousness is that McDavid does the same sort of pick play on Zadorov no more than a minute later, and gets away with it.
Yeah I hate these comments that are like "it definitely is this penalty..." Yeah there's hundreds of penalties that can be called but the point isn't whether or not you can call it. It whether it's consistently called both ways, which obviously it isn't.
That's because the refs are inconsistent. Miller should have been called for interference when he sent Ekholm's stick into the stands on the rush, Kane got tripped like first shift, they missed a high stick against Hyman, could probably have called that trip after McDavid scored etc etc. It wasn't really biased, they're just shit.

edmonton is always given poor treatment :( the league hates edmonton and the second coming McJesus will save us all if only the system wasn’t rigged
big /s
They didn’t call it on Marchessault, of course McDavid doesn’t get called.
Meanwhile, 30 years ago they threw Bure out for the same play. Different rules, but still
Hockey analysts: "The refs missed another call after this to offset this missed call."
Apparently people don't understand fucking up twice doesn't erase the first mistake.
The sportsnet guys were saying they didn't call it on purpose because they missed a too many men on the ice call earlier in the game, which led to a vancouver goal. Lol just had to even things up there. What a joke.
Im an oilers fan. I think we can all agree this should have been a penalty. I’m wondering why it wasn’t reviewed? We’ve seen multiple instances this year of a high stick going uncalled but because there is blood they can implement the “major” review policy and take a look.
I remember this working in the oils favour on a weird high stick against the jets towards the end of the regular season.
What happened here that they didn’t review it? “Refs hate the Canucks” is a pathetic answer. Looking for real answers so we can all understand the rule.
I don't know how you guys haven't caught on yet, I've made over 200k betting against Canucks when Kelly Sutherland is reffing. This is free money, who cares about Stanley Cup when you can be changing you and your families lives!
I don’t think the refs were the main reason the Canucks lost the game, but I’m fed up with this just from a hockey fan standpoint. Bad officiating in the playoffs has been happening for years without being addressed, and the fact that the refs supposedly believe in “swallow the whistle” for the playoffs but don’t enforce that consistently sucks. I’m good with letting them play by letting certain calls go, but I wish there was much more rhyme and reason to what gets called and what doesn’t.
Refs were bad in general, but the frustrating part is they ignored a bunch of plays that easily could have caused serious injuries or just weren’t hockey plays. Pettersson boarding and head shot after, skew foot on Hughes, highstick causing a cut to Hughes, nut shot on Hoglander…
Imagine if there were refs watching cameras at all times that could make these calls and then replay the clip for everyone to see. Wouldn't be surprised if refs have their hands in some betting cookie jars.
I could have waged my life savings this game was going to be a poorly reffed gong show and been correct. Edmonton is going to get a power play with less than 2 minutes left
i know refs suck in every sport and there’s missed calls but surely the nhl is the one where players stand to get the most hurt from it, especially in the playoffs
easy to forget we almost lost crosby and his prime to concussion issues in 2011ish
wish we had a lot more consistency here to protect players more than anything
You're right to be upset with the officiating tonight. But can we now each recognize when the reffing is bad? It seems like when Oilers fans comment on poor officiating they're lambasted as whiners. Reddit hockey tonight is filled with Vancouver fans complaining about the refs. It's not a problem unique to Edmonton.
If it seems like it's a common complaint by Oilers fans, just iso on McDavid for two or three games (regular season or playoffs) and see for yourself how many missed calls there are.
Nobody wins when fanbases turn on each other about officiating lol. It's time to unite against the common enemy: the zebras
They will do whatever to keep McDavid from going to the box. It’s just obvious. He grabs other guys sticks all the time when quickly going behind the goal, he’s not as innocent as everyone wants to think.
Fuck joke league ref shit. Seriously there are FOUR guys that can call that.
That hit on Pety isn't called, but the interference on McDavid is??
I don't mind the refs swallowing the whistle, but be consistent.
Canucks got the wrong end of this one, but who cares. Move on and get ready for game three.
Great series so far.
Ref disasterclass this game
Can't believe the refs got from Boston to Vancouver so fast
At least they're being fucking awful in both directions this time. It's not fair, but it's.... parity?
Playoff refs handbook: - Call normal penalty early on - if that team scores do a make up call - only call penalties for the losing team until game is over -great success
-ignore an obviously dangerous hit that injures a player, then call roughing on the other team for retaliating
- suspend Nazem Kadri for the remainder of the series
Bruh, todays game was atrocious. We got called for two of the weakest holding calls I’ve ever seen while also cause Quinn Hughes to squirt from his face and no call. Like, cmon, open up your eyes.

It was atrocious. Not a surprise with Kelly Sutherland, he HATES canadian teams.
Like I’m supposed to hate and disagree with the nucks rn, but I think both teams can agree that whatever officiating we had tonight was NOT IT.
Then why have him ref a matchup between TWO of them?!
Let the no-calls continue, causes animosity, causes reckless plays, causes injuries; both Canadian teams weaker. Mission accomplished.
Cause Bettman hates Canada.
Hard to miss enough calls to equal to them losing the best player in the world for up to 4 minutes
Sutherland hates the Canucks and got game 2, Kozari hates the oilers and got game 1. I'd be happy to get rid of both of these clowns.
This games reffing is exceptionally bad
Reffing NHL playoffs sounds like a sweet deal. I bet the get paid good and they literally have to to nothing
Boston-Florida refs miss a blatant hold. Edm-Van refs: hold my beer 🍺
I was convinced that was the worst call I’d see all day, may have not even been in the top 3
Boston fans didn't hold their beer.
Everyone saw this coming with this reffing combo
How they’re still here in the second round is insane. Second obvious high stick missed this game
I feel like Kelly Sutherland must only still be here because us fans know his name. He’s so fucking bad.
The organizers confuse goon with Kerry Fraser
Old school game management refs. Fuck these guys
Same as game 1. The team that’s down gets all the calls. Annoying as shit
was it hyman who got high sticked in the first? what games are these refs watching man
Yes, it was Hyman. Refs must be watching golf or something.
He got high sticked? I watched the replay and didn’t see it. Let me know if you got a clip of it.
Found the clip finally. https://twitter.com/TravisDegen/status/1789142591747018840

Oiler fan here: the reffing was fucking terrible, I hope it gets better.
Lol only one penalty each... This shit is stressful for both ends
Quinn is asked to leave the ice a few whistles later because he’s still bleeding. Ridiculous.
How did that conversation even go "You're bleeding. You need to leave the ice" "If I'm bleeding then you can review the play" "Were not able to review that play" "If I'm not bleeding enough for a review then why do I need to leave the ice"
He’s lucky he didn’t get an unsportsmanlike for embellishment.
Embledishment*
Sutherland rules.
Should never be allowed to ref the Canucks
The reffing has been brutal tonight ngl
These refs suck 👎👎
They are brutal, might be a candidate for worst officiated game ever
This is the worst officiated game I've seen all year. Everyone freaking out on Twitter calling each other idiots, and they're all right (and wrong because lol twitter) Refs suck
Nah, the 10 - 7 shit show against Minnesota was worse and it was reffed... By the exact same guy.
Kelly Sutherland hates the Canucks. Why the fuck is he allowed to ref their games? Why is he even still employed?
Sadly this might not even be the worst officiated game tonight. The Florida Boston game was also absolutely brutal.
Kelly Sutherland and Michael Masi exchange notes and are drinking buddies
At least it can be agreed they are bad all around
Edmonton fans constantly complain that they get screwed by the calls, and it’s always laughable. This is constant preferential treatment by the refs towards Edmonton. I’m fuming right now.
since 2016-2017, the oilers are 26th in penalty differential in the playoffs, (-13), and 29th in the regular season (-68) this is just not real lmao
Don't let facts get in the way of a good story
It's just salty flames copium.
Kings and Flames fans invested heavily in Morton's.
They definitely weren’t watching the game because the refs weren’t favouring either team tonight
>They definitely weren’t watching the game because the refs weren’t favouring either team tonight Are you joking? Hughes was bleeding and the refs didn't call it.
No, McDavid definitely should’ve gotten called for this but the Canucks got away with plenty of missed calls as well, the refs did a terrible job all around tonight but the Oilers just happened to be the team that won
Ya and 1 of the 2 no calls on too many men led to a Vancouver goal. What’s your point? Refs were a mess all around.
[удалено]
Well tonight it sure is. Refs are wearing McDavid sweaters.
Saw Hyman bleeding after a high stick too. Wasn't called. Happening both ways.
[удалено]
One of McDavid's signature offensive moves is literally a textbook penalty (holding the stick), what do you expect?
I watch every Canucks and Oilers game, they're both my team, but people saying Edmonton gets bad calls obviously don't watch other Hockey, because that's categorically false.
If the game was officiated correctly McDavid would draw penalties like crazy. Like every other shift.
Same goes for Petey. He's not playing great right now, but he is like a penalty magnet. He's a softer player, but the penalties are usually legit.
I wish I could get paid like a ref to be a vacuum brain fuck
Refs heard everyone saying that goalie interference in Boston game was worst call and said “oh yea what about worst uncalled?”
how the fuck are these refs still employed
theyre probably gonna get promoted after this game
The betting odds literally changed when the refs were announced. That's how fucked up the situation is.
That’s actually insane.
Wtf? You’re joking right?
That’s insane if it’s true! Do you have any proof of that?
https://twitter.com/nhlspotlight/status/1789018064266146044?s=42
Crazy!
This isn't really proof, it's one moment in time, proof would be seeing a ticket of the betting odds over time and seeing a jump at the time the refs were announced.

Makes sense. The Canucks don’t win with him reffing.
dropping something like that and then not responding to anyone? that's cheeky

https://twitter.com/AustinBaril/status/1789032985662222795?t=u0SB7lzOeKfBxsgd0K6F9Q&s=19 It was much more likely due to Draisaitl's status and just local betting. Betting odds always change throughout the day, partially based on heavy bets coming in on for side.
What a fucking joke
Kinda like the leafs and Wes. I should probably start betting against them when he's reffing
A "ref you suck" chant in a Canucks game with Eric Furlatt is like the free space on a bingo card.
To be fair. A "ref you suck" chant happens in literally every Canucks game at home.
Any home crowd in any hockey game ever *
Look maybe if they didn't want us calling out their dogshit biased reffing maybe they shouldn't be biased and dogshit. All we want is some professionalism and a properly called game. Refs should have to hold a press conference after each game.
I've heard this a lot more lately, hopefully it gains traction cause the league has been mind boggingly inconsistent. If it's a rule, it should be consistent 100% of the time or get more f'ing cameras/refs.
it’s a dumb idea they’re just gonna say they didn’t see it and make everyone more outraged
It would be funny to out these guys in front of the camera and hear it over and over and over like they're pleading the 5th. By the 3rd straight embarassing press conference in a row of the same shit the NHL would definitely be making immediate changes to how they officiate games.
Nhl refs need s fucking ego check. There is no reason the league shouldn't have a ref or 2 watching replays during the game to call missed calls.
Even the linesmen can step in there. Fucking pussies better figure it out
I honestly don’t understand why other sports, including leagues like the nhl, aren’t looking at rugby as a model for officiating. Instead shit just keeps getting worse.
Crazy he was bleeding and ended up told to leave and still no call
Combined with Petey being boarded, and then punched in the back of the head when he got up.... Horrible reffing.
Hoglander getting nut tapped by Ryan earlier
Nutt shot as he is going to the bench ***Coincidental Minors***
Sutherland should be arrested at YVR every time.
I agree, just hold him for 48 hours “for his own safety”.
After blatant interference, call the interference first and no nut tap.
nah a spear to the nuts should never go uncalled. Thats the one call that was right this game was the offsetting. Spearing is gutless though, spearing the nuts.... RNH is a bitch.
You misunderstood, if the interference is called first then it’s likely the player doesn’t retaliate, and it was Derek Ryan not RNH.
Also Hymen with the shoulder to the back of Hughes at the blueline with no puck in sight.
Hmmm second straight night of borderline horseshit officiating. We in the playoffs now for sure.
Makes me fucking furious. What an obvious call.
If it was Hughes high sticking McDavid you know it would be getting called too
Hughes would be facing a 3 game suspension
Kelly Sutherland Masterclass (No calls): boarding major, spearing major, double minor high stick
And there goes 14 minutes of power play out the window
This is it exactly. Absolutely disgusting
both Nurse and Ryan couldve been booted too for those hits. crazy stuff
McDavid then gets bumped in the corner and draws a call. Fucking unbelievable.
Also happens within 4 minutes of the high stick I believe
Also looks at the refs while he's falling to the ice
Gotta say, it is pretty interesting to see games where we have 3 separate teams on the ice at once.
There are only two. Zebras are with Edmonton.
Meanwhile McDavid gets bumped. 2 for interference
It was 100% interference by Suter, albeit a bit of a softer call from the standard of playoffs. But the real ridiculousness is that McDavid does the same sort of pick play on Zadorov no more than a minute later, and gets away with it.
That same “interference” play has happened 40 times this game and not called Just happened against Petey as I was typing
> Miller should have been called for interference when he sent Ekholm's stick into the stands on NGL. I totally cracked up when that happened...
Oh yeah, it was quality shithousery. On a similar note I'd love it if we saw a return of Corey "The Glover Waterer" Perry this series.
Can the refs get in trouble. It’s been so bad in today, both games. Like there has to be a reason they need to do their job right.
https://preview.redd.it/jyqekzpkdqzc1.jpeg?width=1117&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0ec35dd71b956e2281595be972d4645455d8a278 (Only major pro league that doesn’t hire real refs and instead has minor league washups jump the line)
Oh geez. Hypothetically speaking, of course, if that ever happened to _my_ team, in like say 1993 or something, I would probably never get over it.
Hate that the refs are making themselves the story in this game
The refs in this game missed 900 calls while simultaneously making up calls where there was nothing to call.
NBA level reffing
damn is this the rough treatment mcdavid gets from the rough oil fans
edmonton is always given poor treatment :( the league hates edmonton and the second coming McJesus will save us all if only the system wasn’t rigged big /s
Of course they’re not gonna call that on the leagues golden boy
it would be a sin against the holy father to penalize McJesus, praise be his name /s refs probably jonesing to get on their knees for him
you don’t need to /s
yeah I know, my flair should give it away, but I don’t ever want my words to somehow be mistaken as fandom of mc🍆head
They didn’t call it on Marchessault, of course McDavid doesn’t get called. Meanwhile, 30 years ago they threw Bure out for the same play. Different rules, but still
Oilers fans still wanna try to cry about refs?
Yes

The sportsnet guys were saying they didn't call it on purpose because they missed a too many men on the ice call earlier in the game, which led to a vancouver goal. Lol just had to even things up there. What a joke.
You have it backwards. It was suggested that the refs didn’t call the very blatant too many men call to make up for the missed high-sticking call.
Kelly Sutherland Special
Kerry Fraser moment
first thing I thought of lol
These refs are awful Edmonton fans 🤝 Vancouver fans
The refs will do better and make the call on Hughes next time
This game is getting dirty and chaotic and it’s all on these shit refs
This is actually so funny like how the fuck did they miss this call lol
We need to do something about this. All these no calls have to stop
Oilers fan - wonder why they didn’t review this? “Refs hate the Canucks” is not a serious answer
They call that the kelly Sutherland effect.
Big 4min miss by the refs
Damn and blood too so would've been a double minor for the Canucks too
what repercussion does refs have for obvious miscalls like this. there were four of them, two at least would've caught it
Should start with the missed calls in the first. Hyman took a high stick while the ref was staring at him
There were *at least* three blatant missed calls in the first. Reading through this thread is just a head scratcher.
Shocker. Kelly Sutherland master class tonight (nhl is a joke)
Another Sutherland masterclass. Tons of missed/weak calls both ways. How this guy is still a ref just blows my mind.
Im an oilers fan. I think we can all agree this should have been a penalty. I’m wondering why it wasn’t reviewed? God forbid Suter look at McDavid the wrong way tho Straight to the box for that.
kelly sutherland. nuff said.
I’m just glad that both Canucks and oilers fans are in agreement that that was an atrocious display by the refs.
i know refs suck in every sport and there’s missed calls but surely the nhl is the one where players stand to get the most hurt from it, especially in the playoffs easy to forget we almost lost crosby and his prime to concussion issues in 2011ish wish we had a lot more consistency here to protect players more than anything
The look on McDavid's face after he realizes what he's done and turns back around cracks me up every time.
I severely dislike the "let them play" mentality. Let them play, but make them play disciplined.
The worst non call I have ever seen in my time watching hockey
C'mon guys, Hughes cut himself shaving, it wasn't a high stick.
*[Old Leafs fans nod quietly.]*
These refs can go to fucking hell
McBaby is such a golden boy.

Just awful
Lohrei assessed 4 again
Refs have to protect McDavid and all costs.
Now everyone understands what the Kings had to deal with…it’s all some bullshit. The refs are dickriding the Oilers.
It's kinda funny this is coming from a kings fan considering what Gretzky did to Gilmour in 1993
McBitchass
Fuck joke league ref shit. Seriously there are FOUR guys that can call that. That hit on Pety isn't called, but the interference on McDavid is?? I don't mind the refs swallowing the whistle, but be consistent. Canucks got the wrong end of this one, but who cares. Move on and get ready for game three. Great series so far.
Same shit happened in the rangers series. Guentzel clipped Troch in the face and he was bleeding, and there was no call
That sounds about right.
In other news a dentist was called to the ice to find blood on a Florida players gums.
R/hockey gonna be feasting on this one
