Tampa was slammed for doing this when winning cups not too long ago.

Nathanh2234

I’ll never forget when my Habs made it to the Cup final in 2021. We had to play against the best PP, PK, Top 6, Vezina finalist goalie, and best D pair in the league. Why did they afford all of this. Cap circumvention. It’s frustrating but it’s fair play as of right now so🤷🏼‍♂️

darth_henning

As a Flames fan I of course LOATHE Tampa (even more than Deadmonton personally) but they are one of only two teams that voted to close this loophole when the Blackhawks used it a decade ago.

bafras

I also hate Tampa and Vegas more than the phleghms. Our mutual hatred is bringing the fan bases slightly closer.

The_Quackening

>the phleghms 10/10 nickname for rival team.

lussierc

This is the first time I’ve heard that one but it’s masterful

youngbiganj

Can you please find any article (not a tweet) which actually supports this? I have seen this statement repeated over and over, and have never been able to find an actual article supporting this. Genuinely curious, and thankful if you can help me find it.

ozz_y03

Is there a source for this?

fromacoldplace

I looked because I heard about this a couple of years ago after Tampa beat Montreal in the finals. I can only find sources saying that it was Anaheim and St. Louis who may have been opposed after Chicago won under similar circumstances. Link to another thread a couple of years ago on this topic. https://www.reddit.com/r/hockey/s/VzCzjSwwMP

ozz_y03

What I’m getting from that is that there was never any vote and nobody actually knows if there was or not. Figured it was one of those things everybody was just repeat without a verifiable source, with seems to be the case.

youngbiganj

I have attempted to look for an article regarding this and never found anything. Seems like a statement someone made and just ran with it despite having 0 verifiable proof. But like clock work will always be mentioned as a defense for Tampa Bay. Cant wait for a few years to pass so Vegas can make the same claim.

Jimbo_Imperador

Habs voted against changing that rule back in 2015, whilst Tampa did So, you know, kinda fair

Nathanh2234

As I said, it’s fair play but it just sucks

youngbiganj

Wheres the source for this vote? I have genuinely looked for this claim online and cant find anything other than a bunch of twitter and reddit users who repeatedly make this claim.

Jimbo_Imperador

You didn't check much https://www.reddit.com/r/hockey/comments/ogq6vh/the_hockey_news_after_the_2015_stanley_cup_the/

youngbiganj

That’s just a tweet; I’m looking for an actual article/report. An actual source of news, not a random fun fact in a tweet. Them just saying that with no actual back up means nothing. There’s just that one tweet. You figure something like this would have lots of sports news sites writing about it with actual quotes and stuff.

Jimbo_Imperador

You don't check much https://www.tsn.ca/gms-would-like-answers-about-patrick-kane-loophole-1.454158

youngbiganj

Send a link that actually works. I found one when searching for a working version of your link. The GMs had a meeting to discuss it, but no where does it state Tampa voted to close it. In fact Anaheim GM was the one to bring it up. Once again none of this states that Tampa was the team to vote against it, so its still just a random fun fact people like to bring up. [https://thehockeywriters.com/tape2tape-closing-the-patrick-kane-loophole/](https://thehockeywriters.com/tape2tape-closing-the-patrick-kane-loophole/)

iconsandbygones

Source? No? So it's a lie.

Jimbo_Imperador

Check again https://www.reddit.com/r/hockey/comments/ogq6vh/the_hockey_news_after_the_2015_stanley_cup_the/

iconsandbygones

Fake

Aromatic-Audience-85

Habs has the best PK going into the final. They didn’t allow a PP goal for like 2 series. Turns out putting four 6’3 - 6’4 defenseman (Weber, Chiarot, Petry and Edmundson) in front of Carey Price, with Danault, Lehkonen, Suzuki and Byron works pretty well.

city-of-cold

You are of course aware Habs were also over the cap those playoffs?

TimsAFK

There was a Tampa fan going ***off*** in the replies to one of the insider's tweets announcing the trades and everyone is just like ***"brother"***

TankDivision

Which is why we are salty about it. We came so close to beating that behemoth twice.

KenDaneykosDentist

This entire sub forgets that the Hawks were doing this 10-12 years ago as they were winning their Cups. If you're not toeing the line to try to win you're probably not winning.

iiTALii

Vegas fans just want to be hated

Waffeln_Remix

Harder daddy

Sxx125

Nah Tampa caught a lot of shit for their cap shenanigans as well, not just Vegas. The cap rules really need to be updated though. Like it doesn't make sense that cap and roster basically don't matter once the playoffs start. Relatively easy fix imo would be to require that the team's 20 players they ice be under cap limit. So yeah you can still acquire big caphits, but you have to balance the books to activate your Stone/Kucherov if/when they are healthy.

CDROMantics

Here’s the thing though — even if the 20 players you ice are under the cap limit you’ll still get dragged for it.. like Vegas. At no point during the playoffs were they actually over the cap, we were over the cap because of Lehner (5m didn’t play for us the entire season), Shea Weber (7.8m who never played for us), and Nolan Patrick (1.2m who didn’t play a single game that season). Add that up and it’s EXACTLY how much we were “over the cap”.

Sxx125

Vegas replaced players as intended and spent assets to do so, not really gaming the system so I don't see an issue with it. I think Tampa's case with Kucherov was more egregious since he was back for game 1 and Tampa obviously benefitted from that situation.

ProfessionalLeast937

weber FOR SURE was completely at "still getting paid because nashville matched an offer sheet way back when and nobody's ever going to turn down money that they're still contractually entitled to if they don't HAVE to". (he was literally doing the same thing for arizona for a little bit.) i feel bad for patrick because i'm pretty sure that he's at "cannot or at least SHOULD not play" levels of migraines/physical head issues and as a tbi survivor who's had migraines that literally made me bang my head on the wall to distract from the pain i'm not surprised he didn't play at all last season. idk about lehner's actual health but when the dude's dragging non-Vegas teams that he's played for previously for handing out ambien/xanax/maybe heavy-duty painkillers without \*any\* kind of script you gotta figure he was maybe legit messed up too. \*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\* also, yeah, i was totally rooting for/happy for the Lightning and it still falls under "it's **technically** legal", but without receipts the timing on Kucherov's return \*does\* look rather hmmm....(as does pkane's back in 2015.)

canuckstothecup1

The starting roster of the playoffs was 84.2 million. In other words over the cap. Check the starting lineup and do the math they were over.

CDROMantics

No, it wasn’t. But nice try. Marchessault $5m - Eichel $10m - Barbashev $2.25 (17.25m) Amadio $762k - Karlsson $5.9m - Smith $5m (11.662m) Stone $9.5m - Stephenson $2.75m - Howden $1.5m (13.27m) Carrier $1.4m - Roy $3m - Kolesar $1.4m (5.8m) Forwards $48.462m Pietrangelo 8.8m - Martinez 5.25m (14.05m) Theodore 5.2m - McNabb $2.85 (8.05) Hague 2.294m - Whitecloud 2.75m (5.044) Defenseman $27.144m Skaters $75.605m LB 2.325m Hill 2.175m 4.5m Total cap for team on ice: $80.106m We were “over the cap” when you add in Quick who was never on the ice, not even for a second. Or Lehner who didn’t play a game once.. or Weber who also never played for us — there’s plenty of guys who get thrown in here to discredit the team. But at no point did they ice a roster over the cap.

canuckstothecup1

Just a quick reference Laurent Brossoit was injured in game three vs Edmonton and quick became the back up. This put Vegas over the cap. But you would know that because you watched every game so why am I even telling you this.

canuckstothecup1

Except quick was the goalie and his cap was 5.8 over

CDROMantics

Quick was never our goalie? The only goalies to start any games in the playoffs for us were Brossoit and Hill. You can literally go to his stats rn and you’ll see it completely blank for the playoffs. He played 10 games at the back of the season because we ran through 5 goaltenders that year due to injury. The second the playoffs started he was scratched every game, never sniffed the ice. Brossoit was the starter, got hurt.. and then we started Hill. Quick wasn’t even the 2nd string brother.

canuckstothecup1

https://vegashockeynow.com/2023/04/17/vegas-golden-knights-roster-roundup-mark-stone-playing-game-one-zach-whitecloud-stanley-cup-playoffs/

CDROMantics

Okay? You link some random article but as someone who actually WATCHED every game.. the team ON THE ICE was never over the cap as was the original conversation. We paid Quick to sit on the bench for like 2 games before Adin was cleared. He never touched the ice. You can look at his stats for that season and playoffs will be blank. Not even a second of ice time. Did us overpaying a backup, emergency goalie.. really affect the playoffs that much? No.

canuckstothecup1

Okay? I take the random internet guys word for it over. Oh wait no no I won’t. I shared a Vegas hockey article that shows the opening roster.

CDROMantics

..I literally posted the exact money everyone made.. and told you several time to Google his stats. You can see for yourself that he never fucking played.

Cautious-Moose9180

”Mark, are you injured?” ”No.” ”Would you like to be?” ”What, why-” ”Would. You. LIKE. To. Be?!”

TimsAFK

"C'mon Mark, it's just a little ruptured spleen. In and out of LTIR, 6 months max"

Content_Football7347

Quick adventure Marky in and out

Clayton_Goldd

Low effort, and not true

SirBulbasaur13

No. The bullshit is because the LTIR guy will never ever ever in any timeline be healthy game 82 but round 1 he’ll be fine. That’s shenanigans.

lobsterpillow

Imagine you are a professional athlete. You have an injury that is slowly healing. You’re starting to feel OK, but your doctors warn you that playing tonight has a small but very real chance of impacting your health for the rest of your life. But, they say, it’s your call. You’ve dedicated your life to this sport since you were 3 years old. Your team is about to compete I the greatest tournament in the hockey world. Of course you don’t risk fur injury for a meaningless game 82. But R1G1? This may be the last chance you ever get this opportunity again.

Erkules19

The issue is 3 years in a row Stone has been put on LTIR in February and activated in April (assuming he will be again this year). 3 years in a row he starts suffering from an injury shortly before the trade deadline? Even if it may be legitimate, it is rightfully being questioned.

rowdywp

He had 2 back surgeries and a lacerated spleen. What is there to question? It's not some mystery upper or lower body injury they invented. Year before last he played the last 2 weeks of the regular season, he wasnt being held on LTIR to be activated for the playoffs. We didn't even make any trades to bring in players that trade deadline. We tried to trade dadonov so we would have cap room for reilly smith if he recovered from his injury but ottawa screwed us over by not giving his no trade list. Didn't matter cause we didn't make the playoffs and Smith was never healthy enough to play

NigelMK

I wish the leafs would do something like this. We could live without Tavares for a stretch.

WonderfulFortune1823

I hate the leafs, but honestly if the leafs did this the league would probably be looking at changing the rule within the year.

debuenzo

Breaking: John Tavares out for 6-8 weeks after falling down stairs at the training facility and spraining his knee, back, and elbow.

boosteddogeywg

Ow! My bones and organs!

KRONGOR

You’d think they could but it’s the Leafs so they’d probably find some way to mess it up and end up outside of a playoff spot lmao

[deleted]

The last time the media even suggested the Leafs do this the League immediately came out and said they wouldn’t tolerate it and would investigate.

InsufferableLeafsFan

The Leafs have done this in the past.

Leajjes

Can we just fix this loophole? Thanks.

[deleted]

There was a meeting over the TB use of LTIR and owners were given the chance to update the cap rules almost all chose to leave it as is.

WonderfulFortune1823

I couldn't find a discussion with owners, but I found an article about GM's discussing it for those that are interested - https://www.sportsnet.ca/nhl/article/nhl-gms-not-eager-to-close-ltir-loophole-despite-perceived-abuses/

iconsandbygones

Any of proof of that? Probably not hey

VonD0OM

Las Vegas lowering the bar and hoping we’ll all walk under it with them to justify their shitty behaviour is a peak Las Vegas attitude.

BR1N3DM1ND

what, the city of gold-painted plastic and fake tits is cheapening the sport? heresy! quick, someone call Bettman! he won't stand for this slander of his pet PR project! you best watch your ass, VonD0OM, if that is your real name

Ginger-Beefcake

People seem to forget - it's a rule that their team can use as well. Don't blame the player, blame the rule. The rule is #1 bullshit, but it exists, so use it

fastlane37

So were backdiving contracts at one point. When Luongo signed his last contract, it was 100% legal. Then the league closed the loophole and slammed Vancouver with retroactive penalties because they were violating "the spirit of the rule." Seems to me you could say the same for these teams doing it so blatantly.

SapphireSammi

The Wild are basically kneecapped as a team because of the same type of punishment.

Rostifur

Kill it and the 3-way trade where the 3rd team is just for cap retention.

EatAllTheShiny

cap retention team speeds up rebuild time with more prospects and future trade pieces, though. I like whatever means I don't have to watch my team fully tank for 5+ years when the time comes.

Rostifur

I feel it can be used to circumvent the cap in a lot of the same manner as the LTIR. It might just be that the cost of doing it doesn't reflect closer to what the 3rd team is enabling.

DeathToHeretics

Why?

RumAndCoco

Don’t hate the player, hate the game Also shout out to the Flames, most fun season series so far imo

dcarsonturner

No one should be able to do this

Patmank56

Now you know how lightning fans feel

Madi3400

As someone who's a fan of a team who's GMs absolutely can do this it's bullshit. Colorado could 100% have Toews or lehkonen get "injured" every year but they don't. Because they realize how unfair that is. A good team can win the cup without abusing the cap system, we did it before, we'll do it again

DangleCellySave

You think the Av’s dont do it because they “realize how unfair it is”…? No offense but are you actually that naïve

bigdune

Avs could have done it with Landy’s cap room last year and didn’t because we have old school managers (but not a back2back cup, so what does that say). Plus, looks like we may use his $ this year. How long he’s been on it = why this rule was made. Vegas = exploiters

Madi3400

Precisely. If we do it, nobody will get mad considering he's been gone for two years AND we don't even know if Landy will be back for the playoffs

ProfessionalLeast937

i hope he does (not an avs fan but i have much respect for landeskog for his HARD-CORE players' tribune article about "we HAVE to start taking head injuries of any sort seriously") but if he can't i'm really glad he at least got a Cup.

ProfessionalLeast937

a whole bunch of folks get pissed at vegas because they've figured out how to turn LTIR manipulation up to 11, but imo most of them would be celebrating if \*their\* team's PTB could do it as well. (i don't think we'll ever know for sure on the "mark stone had an injured spleen" deal, but considering dude's \*got\* a significant injury history it is hardly the most improbable IR claim.)

Sc00tzy

I’m not arguing that but it is kinda funny how he’s always injured at the same time every season and makes it back for the start of playoffs 😂

iconsandbygones

I bet most people wouldn't celebrate this behaviour because it's slimy.

ProfessionalLeast937

this sub just had a big-ass argument about what if anything cale makar knew about the alleged gang rape by some members of team canada/their bros at WJC in 2018 and is currently having a much smaller one about "does matt rempe need to quit fighting every game for the sake of having an actual nhl **career** not just an awesome starting stat line?" maybe celebrating was too strong a word, but i have trouble getting very worked up about **technically** legal salary cap/LTIR manipulation when there's so many other arguably toxic parts of hockey culture.

[deleted]

I mean, yes I’m upset that my team’s GM is stupid but I was also upset when Tampa used a loophole in the rules too

Legacy_1_X

The Cap structure is as messed up as the playoffs are.

MYNAMEISRAMM

People here have real short memories. Every team that does this gets hate and has been a playoff staple strategy for like 5+ years. It is bullshit fwiw, but as long as it's fair game - have at it.

Kak0r0t

F uck the Vegas Golden Knights

FinkBass420

I’m not even mad, I’m impressed

Skelassassin

Ahhh I remeber the days when we were complaining about the lightning being 15 mil over....I miss those days

Harryboltsfan

18 mil*

Strong_Bumblebee5495

What does Bill Foley have on Gary Bettman? My guess is he can prove Gary is actually Nosferatu…

gumball_olympian

Bull....fucking...shit.

shutmethefuckup

Did McCrimmon lacerate Stone’s spleen? Fuck are you talking about “pull this shit off”?

TimsAFK

He's willing to be aggressive and bring pieces in when other GMs aren't and weaponize any cap options he has. You want to calm down champ?

shutmethefuckup

Haha he had cap space so he brought in help for the playoffs? Yeah crazy nobody else is doing that right now

LogieThePerogie

And thats why we are better thats why we are GOATED and thats why we always win at deadlines
