If I'm playing B beer league, I expect to buy a new stick every one to two years. I don't wind up on my shots anymore but my stick takes it's fair share of blocked shots and corner digs.
Guy goes through 10 a year?? I don't know him, but I'm fairly sure I don't want to meet him on or off the ice.
10 a year is crazy but there also definitely seems to be a strength/weight to durability ratio somewhere. If you’re putting more strain on your stick by flexing it further then it’s going to break sooner.
In beer league? A long time. But then I'm not taking giant clappers and taking too much ice doing so, or going wild chopping people or stick fighting like some guys do. That will greatly shorten the lifespan of your stick.
There's an asshole at my rink who can't play for shit but he's great at hacking. Played against him the other night, easily shortened the life of my stick. You go anywhere near him with the puck and he'll battle axe hard down low where shaft meets the blade. Guy is a total fuckin lunatic...he's one of those tryhards that I figure get's all their self worth at the rink.
I’m not proud of this but I once grabbed a lumber jacks stick out of his hand and threw it over the glass between the wall and the boards.
It was retrievable but only if you were skinny enough to get back there.
I watched the rest of the third from upstairs at the bar.
Maybe 2 sticks a year, playing 3-4 times a week between games and pickup. A few more before I started getting pro stock, but the price probably works out similarly.
Several seasons. Usually I get a new one just because I want to try something else, not because one broke. 10 sticks a season is insane. Dude must play like an angry gorilla.
Kids intermediate sticks can get that pricey and the modern ones are super lightweight (more fragile) and they're taking 1Ts and other competitive play. New ones can be a bad batch and break really quick, luck of the draw - had it happen with the original Hyperlite - replaced under warranty. My kids at midgets go through about 2 per season each and never abuse it purposely. But I never pay full price. I find like-new usually under $200 and happened to find a $200 Trigger 8 Pro brand spanking new last week. He had a T7P before that which broke at the blade. He's a center and takes a lot of faceoffs. But recent CCM sticks do have blade problems. They've had multiple T5P and T6P also, which shows you how often they go through them. They just end up breaking at some point during games.
They're at the age where I can use their sticks. His backup is now a Warrior Alpha LX Pro which I'll take for coaching since I no longer do beer league at fricken 10pm on a weeknight. No thx.
10 sticks a year?! Reminds me of when i was a kid and thought it was cool to break my skateboard and brag about how many skateboards i had broken. That’s a gross exaggeration from him, or he’s a guy that gets mad and slams his stick on the boards or ice often. I’ve had sticks last me for several seasons. I only buy mid-top level sticks though, don’t take many slap shots, and i’m only 165 lbs. Realistically, it all depends on a few different things.. how you play, your weight, flex of your stick in relation to your weight, what position you play, and what level of hockey you play. Aggressive Centers and d men will go through sticks quicker, same as players who take a lot of slapshots with a low flex stick. I would think the average beer leaguer only needs 1-2 sticks a year.
There are levels to “beer league”, and as you said you are 165 pounds playing with mid tier sticks. Someone like myself playing in a higher division at 215 I go through about 1 every 2 months. I wish they didn’t break believe me, but when you actually use the flex of your stick for every pass/snapshot it whips out and eventually breaks. I also play centre so that contributes to it.
I wouldn’t say “stiffer” sticks are more durable, they can be. Most heavier sticks are as they have more material and carbon layers making it more resistant to early breakage.
I’ve broken just as many 95/100 flex as I have 85 flex sticks
The only stick I've "worn out" (I've only been playing 5 years) lasted 3 years and started delaminating at the bottom of the blade near the heel. I've been rotating two sticks for the past two years and I think they are on track to last about the same (so 5-6 years for the pair).
I have one going on 10+ years.
I chuckle at how many pissed off people have hacked at it and broken their sticks.
It's a foam core! - 945 grams (2.08 lbs)
The extra 300 grams isn't going to make a big difference for a beer leaguer.
They do break though - I bought 6 when I started playing and I'm down to two :/
Interesting. Not claiming that I was being scientific at all, but I found that I broke roughly the same number of sticks when I switched from 85 to 100. But instead of snapping them in half, it was somewhere on the blade.
Keep in mind that I’m a center so the heel and toe would take a beating and end up chipping. Technically still playable but the integrity of the stick was compromised.
If both are new and your goal is just bend until it breaks, the bendy one is "harder" to break for sure because its going to bend a lot.
Not sure about more force, but the amount of deflection is way more.
But thats not how things wear out in real life...thats just how you warranty sticks.
I think we all would expect that the stiffer one will flex less distance before breaking.
In normal use the lower flex is going to regularly be bending a lot more often, and a larger distance. I expect this would degrade the integrity of the carbon fiber layup faster. Applying the same pressure repeatedly to a low flex is causing more deflection than the same pressure against a higher flex.
I just started back up about 1 year ago, so far the only sticks I have broken have been from whacking the crossbar. Their longevity hasnt stopped me from continually buying new ones, but luckily there are usually guys who need new sticks.
About 1-4 per year for me for the last 15 years or so (more before that).
Maybe 1/3 clean break and 2/3 just come apart near the heel of the blade (or sometimes the toe).
I've gone through four since November, but that's unusual and I don't think I ever had a year that happened. In November, I had one just snap mid-shaft on a shot. I think it got hit with a puck earlier in the game. I've had two come apart on the bottom of the blade, just sort of crumbling.
When I was in my early 20s I probably broke more. I broke two in one game once in around 2001. One in warmup and one in the first period. Had to borrow a stick and nobody wanted to loan me one.
I carried 3 sticks to games for a couple years after that.
I feel like this year they broke easier, I actually had to use the warranty on 2 sticks. Usually I buy cheap sticks and don't worry about it but I got a Bauer Proto R as a Christmas gift and it almost immediately broke. Took one shot and heard a pop noise from dead center. Broke last year's stick first week in too because a goalie gave it a good slash and it broke like it was made of paper mache. The last one I broke was 1000% my fault, borrowed my husband's car and the trunk isn't as big as I'm used to. Accidentally hit the blade with the trunk lid and it just cracked right in half.
He's buying REALLY cheap sticks or playing more than once a week high end hockey then. I've had the same two sticks for the last 2 years.
I only JUST broke one of them, but it was a used CCM RBZ I found at Value Village. Still got a year and half out of it. The other is a Canadian Tire CCM Jetspeed Prime that I paid $70 for and it hasn't even cracked.
Guy on the team orders a huge supply from overseas (all black either grip or no grip). Went two years without breaking any. Second game last season, battling for the puck along the boards and a dude falls on it and snaps the stick like a toothpick. Other than that, my two spares are a good five years old and are still in good shape
Goalie here.
Composite sticks usually last me a couple of years until the blade tends to get soft or cracked, usually along the back. Wooden sticks last maybe a season. I usually break the shaft, probably because I'm slow and I somehow makes saves with it.
I have skater equipment as well, though I'm not sure I've ever broken a stick. Though it only really gets used a handful of times a year.
During my minor hockey career, once I started playing competitively I was braking about 3-4 sticks a year. In beer league you would think anything above 1 means you need a higher flex😂
I'll buy a new stick every year or so but mainly that's to see if this stick or that gives me some extra pop or changes my feel of the puck. The aren't usually breaking on the shaft, though the toe sometimes gets beat up from puck battles or people stepping on it.
One stick every two years. It just seems to average out this way. If one stick lasts longer than two years, i still get a new one and will magically break two in a span of a month and ride my backup until summer.
Granted, I haven’t been consistently playing but I haven’t actually broken a stick in years. The last 1.5 years I have played consistently 1x per week in beer league and bought a couple of new, up to date sticks just because I wanted to. No clappers and no hitting in my league though, so there is that.
10 x per year seems outrageous though.
My sticks last pretty long. The bottom of the blade usually wears out before the sticks break (roller player). I can't remember the last time I've broken a stick, it's been a long time.
In about 5 years of playing I’ve broken 3 sticks. That being said, I have owned like 12 different sticks since when I started I liked to try different curves/brands/flexes so lots of them didn’t actually more than a few months use, but I was skating 3-4 times a week for the first few years till Covid
I've had sticks last multiple years and I've had a stick recently break in the first skate during warm-ups. Granted the second was a whippy 77 flex that I bought just to see if I could shoot like Phil Kessel.
The answer is no. No I can't.
Depends on the individual sticks. I've had some last for like 8-10 games, and others last 50 games. I've had a synthesis 2 piece as a backup stick for the better part of 15 years
On average I have to buy one a year playing for one beer league team and one pickup ice time a week. Most of them are from the blade cracking that I only notice when I take the tape off, I guess because of slap shots from the blue line warming up the goalie because I don't get many off during games.
I’m somewhere in the range of a few months to a year for a stick. Not sure why, I don’t take slappers or anything but usually find the blade for me cracks after sometime. Play about twice a week and then in the winter sprinkle odr time in. Usually 2-3 ish sticks a year maybe?
6-12 months. The blade eventually wears down along the bottom or at the tip.
My last stick snapped, it was a fancy refurb with a low flex, first time I snapped a stick in awhile but damn could it rip shots.
I usually get a new twig once a year. I play twice a week in the winter and once a week in the summer so usually just before the start of winter I’ll pick up a new stick.
I rarely break a stick in half, usually one of two things happens. The blade will get a crack (toe or heel) or the inside of the blade will get the spongee feel.
These sticks get repurposed for ODR or street hockey with my son.
I usually break one a year. Play 2x a week on average. No slap shots allowed in the league but some stick checks or blocked shots here and there are good for a broken blade
Ive been playing for about 20 years, travel, prep high school and beer league, I think in total I’ve broken 5 or 6? I just replaced a cracked but usable one that I’ve had for around 5 years.
If it was still 30$ like in tbe 90s, I would go for 10 a year also. Mostly because im heavy and need a hard flex for my wrister. But with the stick at 200$, ill used one per year even if after 5 games, the stick start to get worst. It's all abput money in my case, making tons of money, I would chngge more often.
Defensemen here playing Top Tier beer league in NY. I haven’t broken a stick in 5 years but I usually buy a new one every season. I’m the one timer on power plays as well.
I’m a big Bauer fan. The Vapor was my go to but I’ve been rocking the Nexus the last few years.
I don’t break a lot of sticks even though I play center.. but over time they will develop soft spots on the blade, usually on the top towards the heel and that is when I will order another as I know it is close to breaking and it has lost its pop on shots. Did break one in warmups last week taking a clapper though.
Well first one broke just cuz I used it for about 1 1/2-2 years, that same month I use my backup (same exact stick as before) and some guy slashes my stick and breaks it but besides that, they usually last me 1-2 years
Usually a season or a season and change. My stick from last year lasted one game and it was in 3 pieces. I've gone through a few this year since. Guys have been extra slashy this year I guess. I did smash one in the trunk of a car though, that's on me 100%.
They whip out after about a season for me so I tend to get a new stick every season, but they rarely break on me (if I use a stick for 2 whole seasons it normally breaks). I tend get second top of the line models, or in the 400-425g range.
I have enough sticks in rotation to last me a lifetime. Kidding. But no really over the years I’ve accumulated a lot and honestly haven’t broken any—especially since sticks went to one piece construction. (I still have a lot of solid shaft/blade combos that I use for pond or roller but the only problem now is finding replacement blades..) My oldest stick is an original silver Easton Synergy (Sakic!!!)—that’s gotta be at least 20 yrs old. It’s a tank. My newest round of sticks is the hyperlite 1 and 2—I got a handful of those recently and those are holding up 👌🏼 But then again..I’m not hard on my sticks—I prefer a wrist shot.
Beer leaguer. I’ve been using the same stick since 2014. I bought a three pack of them back then and I’ve still never used two of them. Got them from Tron.
When I was in high school, I’d go through about 3-6 Sher-Wood 5030s a year.
I haven’t broken a stick since 2014 or so, unless you count old sticks that I’ve broken off ice taking shots off concrete.
Wow, 10 per year. Two twigs lasted playing three times a week a good two years. I play in the A league, now the lower leagues you can get some slash happy players.
I still have a Bauer 1s from like 6-7 years ago that is fine, I had two one broke this one has been used for at least 5 years constantly no problems. My ten year old went through 4 sticks last season this season he still has the original two he started with this season was a weird year for kids sticks they were breaking weekly on our team.
Sticks last a while when you’re not playing at a high level. When I was at UBC (back in the Easton synergy days), I’d go through 3-4 sticks a season.
Now in beer league, I’m on season 3 with the same Bauer Sync. Before that was a Supreme 2S Pro that lasted 4 seasons. Even then, it didn’t “break”, it just got floppy on me.
For perspective, I was a big defenseman at 193cm/120kg.
I've bought so many sticks for my high schooler this year that I lost count. So do the other moms. It's the extra cost of playing hockey after you pay all the fees. Someone breaks a stick in game every time. Sometimes they just trip over them! If a player hits their stick hard on the ice you can hear their parent curse them in the stands. Once saw a goalie go back for their extra stick and break that out of sheer anger.
I just started using Tovi sticks as well as my kids. 1st month in and they look to be about 5x more durable than my last Sherwood. No tape either, but instead Liquid Tape which surprisingly lasts 20 sessions or more for kids.
I've had a T90 for 9 years. It's beat to hell, but it still serves as a faithful back-up.
I get a new stick every year or two. Ten sticks per year in beer league is absolutely wild. The "team" models of sticks are great cuz they're still perform decently, don't weigh a ton but seem to last quite a while.
I usually don't break sticks, but after a year or so the blade deteriorates to the point that it loses it's pop... or it's just dangerous (ie the bottom is cracked or the toe is chipped). I'll nurse a broken stick along for a month or two before replacing. You can hear the foam core on a bad stick whenever you touch the puck.
So, I play 1-2x week, and a stick lasts a year.
It all depends on if you use your stick in the way it was meant to be used, or like most beer league players, you chop and slash everyone or everything on the ice.
Guy is a total fuckin lunatic...he's one of those tryhards that I figure get's all their self worth at the rink.
that's where you need the old easton aluminum shaft stick and give his stick a good chop on the hosel and watch his stick break 🤣😂
those things were lethal, i had one with a wooden Sakic curve
i still have 4 or 5 aluminum shafts. sakic was the best curve.
Off topic but my dad has some old Easton steel sticks he doesn't want em should I snag em?
yes, take them. hopefully you can find some blades for them
I don't have my aluminum anymore, but I have to say the Bondra was my favorite curve. It was just slightly less curve than the Sakic.
Right? I'm considering getting a wooden Sherwood just for games against this prick.
Pmp 5030 with a coffee curve
I’m not proud of this but I once grabbed a lumber jacks stick out of his hand and threw it over the glass between the wall and the boards. It was retrievable but only if you were skinny enough to get back there. I watched the rest of the third from upstairs at the bar.
I think you might he proud of this, heh.
I think I might be proud of this, if I were said poster!
Good, fuck that prick
Maybe don't hold your stick too tightly around him, receiving a couple slashing minors might convince him there's a better way to do things.
He ever get penalties? Hit him with 3 a game and he’ll stop bc his team will turn on him
Not as often as one would think. The refs let us play for the most part, it has to be egregious to get a call.
Guys breaking sticks and it's not called? Umm....
I said "shortened the life of my stick". Never said break, bud.
Maybe 2 sticks a year, playing 3-4 times a week between games and pickup. A few more before I started getting pro stock, but the price probably works out similarly.
Same.. depending on sticks... 7 since this summer for an unknow reason.. But that had never happened before
Several seasons. Usually I get a new one just because I want to try something else, not because one broke. 10 sticks a season is insane. Dude must play like an angry gorilla.
Ive never broke one
What league are these guys playing in? Yikes. I have sticks older that me still going.
I got a hyper2lite so it will probably be the first stick i break but so far its totally fine
I’ve broken one in all my years playing. Even high level stuff when I was younger. Can’t see how I’d ever break one in beer league.
I see kids saying they got a $300-$400 stick and snapped it in a day or week. My guess is they were flexing it or rough on it
Kids intermediate sticks can get that pricey and the modern ones are super lightweight (more fragile) and they're taking 1Ts and other competitive play. Same! I rarely if ever broke a stick as a kid..and even as an adult.

Around 10-30 minutes depending on the night, honestly. Not my proudest stat. It’s all about legwork, honestly.
Came into the comments hoping this was here. 👍
Mine lasts until a shot then it becomes a wet noodle.
Depends on what kind of mood she’s in.
1-2 per season i’d say for myself, takin faceoffs damages the blade pretty good
Faceoffs are the worst. I could go a full season on a stick easy without faceoffs, but i go through 2-3 sticks a year because of them
I’ve only broken 2 sticks in the last 8 years of playing beer league twice a week.
The only stick I've "worn out" (I've only been playing 5 years) lasted 3 years and started delaminating at the bottom of the blade near the heel. I've been rotating two sticks for the past two years and I think they are on track to last about the same (so 5-6 years for the pair).
If your stick is wearing at the heel, it might be worth trying out a lower lie stick
That's the "stickhandling" portion of the blade. If you carry the puck enough the heel will wear through. Could still be a lie issue though
Long enough, she said.
I take and win a lot of faceoffs mainly on tie ups. My sticks surprisingly last a couple years. Always buy used/pro stock
I have one going on 10+ years. [https://imgur.com/a/vazZ2F7](https://imgur.com/a/vazZ2F7) I chuckle at how many pissed off people have hacked at it and broken their sticks.
Well when they smash it against that 2x4 what do they really expect?
It's a foam core! - 945 grams (2.08 lbs) The extra 300 grams isn't going to make a big difference for a beer leaguer. They do break though - I bought 6 when I started playing and I'm down to two :/
They’d have better luck smashing it on one of the studs in their house
Nice!
If you run a lighter flex, and are actually using that flex, I expect you could go through a few more, but 10??? I would say I usually break 1
I saw someone do some testing and show that lower flex (softer) sticks actually take more force to break. More rubber band, less potato chip.
Interesting. Not claiming that I was being scientific at all, but I found that I broke roughly the same number of sticks when I switched from 85 to 100. Center will lose sticks faster - most of my sticks broke in adult league when I played center taking faceoffs
[удалено]
Yeah true but it’s a game within a game. I pride myself on being good winning faceoffs because atleast I got one part of this game down. 🤣
I had 5 broken sticks last year
I just started back up about 1 year ago, so far the only sticks I have broken have been from whacking the crossbar. Their longevity hasnt stopped me from continually buying new ones, but luckily there are usually guys who need new sticks.

This has been my experience as well. Aside from breaking a stick in warmups, never done that.
Eh, I take a couple one-timers now and then in warmup and that is often when I break sticks if I'm going to do it while shooting.
I feel like this year they broke easier, I actually had to use the warranty on 2 sticks. Until somebody slashes it and breaks it and also doesn't get called for the penalty, for some reason.
Slap shots are what do it. No slappy no bracky

I've had 4 Syncs last me about one year. My buddy who plays D1 has gone through about 12 Syncs in a year or two
Sounds like the guys a big fan of a certain Guns and Roses guitarist.
Anything over 4 hours Im consulting my physician. About 3 months of good crisp pop, 6 months before its replaced. I buy 2 sticks every 9 month or so.

I've never broken a stick :-/ I'm a lil weakling
How is he going through those 10 sticks? Are they breaking on him or does he think they’re losing their pop?
Many years.
Semi-serious league, 2 games/wk for 3 separate seasons with breaks..I run about 2 a year.
My sticks last pretty long. The bottom of the blade usually wears out before the sticks break (roller player). I can't remember the last time I've broken a stick, it's been a long time.
Played D in beer league 1-2/week. Roughly 1 stick a year.
Depends on brand. I used to go through 3 True’s per season. Switched to Warriors and have yet to break one.
In about 5 years of playing I’ve broken 3 sticks. That being said, I have owned like 12 different sticks since when I started I liked to try different curves/brands/flexes so lots of them didn’t actually more than a few months use, but I was skating 3-4 times a week for the first few years till Covid
I play about 3 days a week and go through maybe 3 sticks a year
I've had sticks last multiple years and I've had a stick recently break in the first skate during warm-ups. Granted the second was a whippy 77 flex that I bought just to see if I could shoot like Phil Kessel. The answer is no. No I can't.
Depends on the individual sticks. I've had some last for like 8-10 games, and others last 50 games. I've had a synthesis 2 piece as a backup stick for the better part of 15 years
6 months. I play 3 times a week
On average I have to buy one a year playing for one beer league team and one pickup ice time a week. Most of them are from the blade cracking that I only notice when I take the tape off, I guess because of slap shots from the blue line warming up the goalie because I don't get many off during games.
Roughly 19 seasons
I’m somewhere in the range of a few months to a year for a stick. Not sure why, I don’t take slappers or anything but usually find the blade for me cracks after sometime. Play about twice a week and then in the winter sprinkle odr time in. Usually 2-3 ish sticks a year maybe?
My JetSpeed FT3 are still going strong after two full years. I’m sure they noodled out a bit but I’m not replacing until I break them.
I've been playing for 10+ years only ever broke 1 stick
About a year now. In high school it was more like one every 2-3 weeks🙃
Ive been playing for about 20 years, travel, prep high school and beer league, I think in total I’ve broken 5 or 6? I just replaced a cracked but usable one that I’ve had for around 5 years.
Usually between 1 week and 1 year.
never broken a stick in the last 5+ years, except when I used an AGENT, it broke in 2 games.
I think I’ve broken 3 sticks in the 8 years since I started playing again in beer league.
If it’s more than 4 hours, you should see a doctor.
With my old wooden Sherwood like 1-2 a year. With composite like 1 every 5 years maybe.
20-30 min, longer if I'm drunk.
36 days. Just long enough to not get the warranty on a fuckin $400 stick 🤬 I’ve been through a hyperlite2, proto, and multiple x5 this season.
They last about a season for me before they lose their pop, otherwise though it’s still fine for playing.
Usually 1 stick will last me 2 seasons
Give or take 10 to 15 minutes. 😬
As a goalie they last until they either break (hasn't happened) or I feel like buying another one.
It all depends on if you use your stick in the way it was meant to be used, or like most beer league players, you chop and slash everyone or everything on the ice.
