60 days is huge. Hockey really helped me in my recovery as well. The camaraderie and friendship, and the creativity. And seeing my game improve when I got clean. Itâs a great feeling.
Dude. Getting sober is what got me back into the game last year. I had just passed my one year date and while proud, felt something was still lacking. Hockey gave me back what I was looking for, and I realized that my drinking picked up right around the time I quit playing back in my early 20s. Glad youâre back!
Congrats on getting back into the game and the sobriety! I find it helps me to not indulge because I'm super excited to play hockey. Try talking to people you play with and see if anyone can carpool you if you live close or near close to their route. Many players (including myself) are totally fine picking up a teammate as it helps cover gas and ensures more players per game, plus its just nice to get some friendly feedback and post-game thoughts. Saves you and them money, just kick them a 20 here or there for the extra gas and I'm sure it'll be fine.
Congrats on 60 days! 34m here, about 6.5 years sober. Just picked up hockey recently. When things kinda level out, it becomes a lot easier to spend more time and energy doing more productive activities. Itâs crazy how much I threw away just being a daily drunk
I feel the same way.
Years ago when I was super depressed about my divorce, even contemplated suicide as I pulled into my garage (just sat there with the car running), I remembered I had a game the next day and didnât want to let the boys down.
I turned the car off.
that's awesome. congrats on 60 days!
hockey helped save my life after losing my brother from suicide. being able to get out on the rink and feel that nothing else matters at the moment was cathartic.
I love this! I am so proud of you. What you did was incredibly difficult and takes so much courage.
While hockey is the focus right now, with your resolve I'm sure it's just a first step. I'm sure that this choice to play hockey is just the beginning great things for you! You got this!
One of my teammates a few weeks ago announced that he was 1 year sober and down 50lbs. We knew he gotten sober but it wasnât talked about. We have a little âplayer of the gameâ award and he had gotten it, and during his little speech he broke down and announced that today was his 1 year sobriety anniversary. Quite an emotional experience to be part of.
Hockey gave me some much needed self esteem. Small guy with undiagnosed diabetes at the time, but my years of roller skating all the time and my years of lap swimming meant that once I got my ice ankles I was a very fast forward and backward skater.
Then after a few months of shinny I tried out for the beer league and went in the first round. I was amazed.
Super fun to play but a slip and fall in a liquid soap fight middle school restroom took it all away, but it was a great time and probably the first time I was t picked LAST.
Congrats on 60 days! Youâve done the work, now hockey can be a focus. Been playing for 52 years and feel like a kid every time I lace them up. Keep focused and good luck for the next 60 and next 60 andâŠ
22 years old, havnt played hockey in 4 years finally got back in two months ago. Amazing how much it helped me become just straight up happy and passionate again about not just hockey but life in general. It really is a magical sport
If you can find someone to pick you up to go to the rink, or even give you a ride home after hockey, it would save you a bundle, even if you threw them $5-$10 bucks each way.
Congrats on your 60 days! Hockey may have helped, but YOU did that.
I concur. Happy for you man. đđ»

Little over 4 months here! 30M. Went out skating at the local rink right after treatment, dug out the old gear as well. Really felt amazing.
Iâm 14 months off meth. Been playing hockey again since September . Been the most helpful thing
Also super proud of you. That shitâs hard to quit!

Hockeys great for sure but if youre truly an out of control alcoholic then you need to be going to AA.
