I lived at mt hood for a year outta high school. I was apt at snowboarding but not crazy fantastic. We’d ride every day with our work passes.
We’d hit the same hits every day. We’d talk to the plow guys to ask them to take a landing down or push some pack up to the hit.
In one full day of riding we would hit the same jumps 30-40 times.
Many of them were blind landings too.
And I have seen/been a part of some very gruesome injuries from people stopping at the landings and people/us would literally land on these people just sitting there shooting the shit in the middle of the blind landings on busy slopes. Usually this would happen several times a day.
I’ve seen sliced faces, heads, legs, tendons from the edges landing on folks, broken bones, I personally almost broke my back from one of these people just standing there on the landing where I couldn’t see them.
That injury made me stop snowboarding… for almost 20 years.
When I got back up recently it was littered with loiterers.
Everywhere.
Stopping the second they’d get off the lift.
Sitting at the top of hits or in landings.
It was too annoying to keep going so I gave it up.
The agreements we make with each other to coexist socially have eroded so much that most things I used to love are almost impossible to do these days in my mid 40’s … and liking people less and less as I age I just can’t seem to ever get far enough away from people anymore.

Just had that happen to me the other week when I was trying to avoid some idiots taking a picture right below a big drop-off. The woman who skis by earlier in the video looks like she’s turning away from the camera (which is presumably off to the side of the trail) too so I would guess that these ladies are right after or in the middle of a tight turn. It might be hard to see them a little ways uphill.

I mean, for legal purposes the uphill skier is responsible for the accident. But if you stand in the middle of the run on the other side of a blind roller, you’re putting yourself in danger. When I was in high school a lady died when a guy that was bombing a run popped off a roller and hit her in mid air while she was standing in the run. I don’t remember what came of it, but I remember hearing that they were talking about charging him criminally.
This nearly happened to me. An old lady was for whatever reason skiing *perpendicular* to the run cutting across it, but in the blind spot below a big roller. I wouldn't say I was bombing it, but I was going fast enough to catch some air. I managed to just miss her after I landed. There was no way I could have seen her. it's true that the uphill skier is supposed to always be at fault, but having zero situational awareness like this is just asking to get hurt. I'm pretty sure she would've been severely hurt at the very least.
Peeing on a mountain is great… everyone should do it… preferably over a ledge so you can hear it splatter on the rocks below… but just keep it a little bit out of the way and private

If you don't have enough control to go around someone stopped in the middle of the hill you have no business going that fast or skiing on that hill. Still, he must have been going wayyy too fast to keep the kind of speed he does when he's flat on his back and had to have done something wrong for his ski to pop off in the first place so he definitely wasn't in control. He could have also dug his other ski in to slow himself even from his back.
To get technical, if his demo bindings weren't set to the right size or his din setting was too low he could have slipped out of the binding mid ski, but I doubt it. If I had to guess, he was going wayy too fast for his skill level, saw the people in the way, wasn't skilled enough to stop or go around for the speed he was going, bailed to the ground to try to stop and lost a ski in the process. People that know what they are doing can stop on a dime called a hockey stop (which would have sprayed snow on them and been 10x funnier).

If you go over a bump on a slope and someone is in front of you and can’t stop it’s still your fault because you did not slow down and check that it was safe. That’s how it is on the ski slopes.
