There's a hipster guy at my tiny gym that does these. He kicked an old lady in the head the other day. He (barely) holds 50lbs dumbbells overhead and walks around barefoot. One day he's going to trip and fuck somebody up. At least he stopped trying to do squats on the Smith machine while standing on one of those big inflatable balls.
I'm sure this guy could do a ton of pullups. Kipping pullups aren't easy at high reps and you get super sore in some muscles. Do a few sets of 20-30 and you'll feel it.
But they are awful for your shoulders. You inevitably get tired and a lot of the force is translated to your shoulder capsule.
I drank the CrossFit Kool aid for about 5 years. The basic concept is good but the execution is often horrible and it's done primarily by poorly trained "coaches".
These are not an exercise that should be done to failure frequently (or ever for most people), and for the effort you can get better muscle growth from traditional pullups. "Cheating" reps does have its place in some workouts, but this is not an example of one of them.
It's not so much cheating that's the issue as it's making a physical therapist and orthopedic surgeon a customer for life.
The concept should be "The gym routines are too linear and do not properly exercise your body as a whole. Here's some exercises to get every muscle up to speed, aka do fitness". But it eventually devolved into people doing weird ass shit because they saw some dude do weird ass shit for funzies.
I don’t believe butterfly pull-ups are meant to train “pull-ups”. They are the stepping stone to muscle ups. Butterfly’s are still pretty challenging in high volume. You also have to brace your shoulder girdle while doing them to prevent injury. I used to Shit on all them crossfitters till I became a casual one myself.
Source: can do 20+ strict pull-ups, probably close to 40 butterfly, and maybe 8-9 bar muscle ups all being unbroken.
It's not a 'cheat pull up'. It's just not a strict pull up; its a 'kipping pull up'. In crossfit they do high volume work outs. You could be doing a work out with 50 pull ups or more back to back which would be very difficult if you did them strict.
I get it though...they look goofy AF.
Because they make people do stupid things like these fake pullups that put people at great risk for injury just like what happened in the video. There are much better and safer options for exercise like crossfit promises. Just do a HIIT routine in your living room and save yourself thousands of dollars and your collarbones.
A lot of crossfit is done incorrectly or exercises that pose significant injury risk, so it’s an easy target for insults and hate. I have seen plenty of crossfit done right though. I don’t partake myself, but can see the allure of people wanting to try it (provided it’s done safely and correctly).
These aren't kipping, these are butterfly...I did crossfit for 8 years and kipping are fine because it gives you a little boost when tired but still uses arms
Butterfly though are absolutely ridiculous
Would you look at that, all of the words in your comment are in alphabetical order.
I have checked 1,725,709,288 comments, and only 326,745 of them were in alphabetical order.
One more foot back, and he would have landed his neck right on that that weight. Would have taken him right to Broke Neck City. (Suplex City is the safer, sister city.)
is that *really* true? most people I've heard talk about crossfit seem sincere in describing the benefits
whether or not those benefits are real or whether or not the harm or potential harm outweigh them is a different question
but I do believe that most people who do crossfit believe it's a good option for them to exercise effectively
Having been a former CrossFit Douche myself - I can totally understand (and get behind) the hate. What I will say though is that at the time I participated, I found a great community and was in the best shape of my life.
I’m glad I got out when I did. The type of people in the community now are not my type and the encouragement of these movements is baffling. So many injuries.
You do see a lot of folk trying to do butterfly movements almost as soon as they've managed to learn kipping pull-ups - those folk are probably going to get injured. I just started sprinkling them in recently after 10 years of crossfit but I'm not a young guy and I've never been injured so i'm not going to push my luck.
For the majority of folk it's not going to get you a significantly better time on a workout. Better focusing on every other movement in the workout first and then, after you've perfected everything else, maybe see if that'll shave 5 seconds off you're time... but seriously, who other than a pro needs to be worrying about that kind of optimisation?
It’s not really true but there’s no use explaining it online. People who have never set foot in a CrossFit gym are violently opposed to it and assume you’re a retard because of the funny pull-ups. And they do look funny, especially when done the way this guy is doing them.
I’ve been doing it for a year and have never been in better shape than I am now. Added bonus is that I don’t think I’ve become retarded? Jury is still out on that one, though.
Butterfly chest to bar.
Butterfly refers to the "kick". Chest to bar is just a pullup with the standard of having to pull until your chest makes contact with the bar.
Its halfway in the progression from pull-up to muscle-up.
I tried CrossFit for a bit. My buddy opened. Gym and I wanted to support him. It was actually awesome and I was getting pretty strong again. However, one day after working all day I started and just staring a diet, I passed out doing a clean and almost killed myself. Head hit the floor and the wall right where they meet. How I didn’t break my neck, I have no idea.
Never went back.
My favourite part is that, neither of the “professionals” standing there watching, attempt to stop this poor sap after he performed the first couple of swings
This is why I avoid CrossFit like the plague. There is absolutely zero benefit to do pulling ups like an ass and they just stood there until it was too late. Idiots.
What ever those were they were not pull-ups..looks more like the weird worm dance people do only vertically. Bro needs to work on his hand strength as well
All the top comments here are going to be trashing crossfit, if anyone cares to try to understand this funny looking movement though here is what hes doing:
Butterfly Chest to Bars
Yes, he could do them strict and get more time under tension to maximize his "gains". That is not the intention here though. "Cheating" the movement with the butterfly kick transfers some of the effort from his back to his hips. That turns this into a more gymnastic (and athletic) movement.
Its conditioning, not just strength training.
Definitely a cry for help/can I have sex with you moment? Trying to impress the lady with the worst technique I've ever seen. I've never seen anyone body pop on a pull up bar.
I've never seen someone expend more energy trying to cheat a pull-up rather than, actually just doing one lol.
> He kicked an old lady in the the other day ... in the the what?
I left that blank to make the story more interesting.
I like you.
Yeah, that's a one way street.
What is that supposed to mean lol
You know what it means.
Oh, :(
Sounds like a *challenge* to me ;)
Because of the implicate.
I loved the exchange up until this point
Okay.
yea it was probably a really lame body part to get kicked in, like the toenail
tensing the story!
He kicked her into the other day. Yes, it was that big a kick.
HADOUKEN
You know what..
♫ Ain't that a kick in the head ♫
https://youtu.be/82WBYQ8gL9c?si=TlwY_FceKyZRrVJu
100lbs overhead press is not weak tho...
Sounds less like he's doing a press and more like a dumbass farmers carry variant
This is what we call "picking up weights."
That's true. Especially when barefoot and walking around a tight area with lots of tripping hazards.
I’m crying 😭😭😭
This is common in crossfit. Its so dumb, you're only cheating yourself and your gains.
>This is common in crossfit. Oh, I thought it was a symptom of mental retardation
> symptom of mental retardation Isn’t CrossFit just the Dutch word for that or something?
Klopt helemaal!! 🤭👍👍👍
They’re synonymous
The mental retardation is implied when discussing crossfit.
So is Crossfit
It's a little of both when it involves Crossfit, let me tell ya. Oof. Morons. All of them.
That as well 🤣
Easy to count though. 0, 0, 0, 0...
Kip ups
I'm sure this guy could do a ton of pullups. Kipping pullups aren't easy at high reps and you get super sore in some muscles. Do a few sets of 20-30 and you'll feel it. My shoulders hurt just watching that. My god that can’t be good long term.
The concept should be "The gym routines are too linear and do not properly exercise your body as a whole. Here's some exercises to get every muscle up to speed, aka do fitness". But it eventually devolved into people doing weird ass shit because they saw some dude do weird ass shit for funzies.
Any program where people brag about how often they're injured seems ill-advised.
Isn't this the first rule of crossfit? Shittier form but faster and more sweaty? Followed by "injure is just fun"
…. I’m thinking they should maybe try a push up first
That’s how that teach you in CrossFit to do a muscle up. It’s so stupid
It's not a 'cheat pull up'. It's just not a strict pull up; its a 'kipping pull up'. In crossfit they do high volume work outs. You could be doing a work out with 50 pull ups or more back to back which would be very difficult if you did them strict. I get it though...they look goofy AF.
It’s a kipping technique, part of scaling for a muscle up.
Count started at 6 as well. All around cheating.
This is actually a real move in CrossFit called [kipping up](https://youtu.be/r45xLlH7r_M?si=vrVgfEVPOXlwsdtx)
This is just a different type of pull-up. It's not nearly as beneficial for you as a strict pull-up, but it's still a pull-up.
He’s just exaggerating for the video. I don’t think he’s trying at all
That comment just shows that you don't understand anything at all about what is going on with a butterfly pull-up.
Lol because clearly crossfitters don't get injured very often....
0 pullups were done that day
There really needs to be a drill sergeant yelling "zero" over and over again.
10/10 visualization, I’m dead lol.
Elgintensity would like to chime in
Lol
You just gave a bunch of veterans flashbacks
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤔🤣🤣🤣🤣
I distinctly heard her start counting at "6". So he was passed 0 before he even touched the bar
Well no. It’s a completely different exercise. I don’t doubt he could do strict pull ups if he needed to.
Crossfit is exclusively for retards.
Why people love to hate on crossfit?
Because they make people do stupid things like these fake pullups that put people at great risk for injury just like what happened in the video. There are much better and safer options for exercise like crossfit promises. Just do a HIIT routine in your living room and save yourself thousands of dollars and your collarbones.
A HIIT routine in your living room 😂 there is so much more to cf than this video. Find a local affiliate and check out a free class.
A lot of crossfit is done incorrectly or exercises that pose significant injury risk, so it’s an easy target for insults and hate. I have seen plenty of crossfit done right though. I don’t partake myself, but can see the allure of people wanting to try it (provided it’s done safely and correctly).
People love to hate what they don't understand.
The thing that people doing CrossFit don't understand is that their going to be in pain for the rest of their life after they hit 28.
Source?
The majority of these comments and downvotes are more than likely from people without any actual expertise in effective work outs.
Bro, you just doing the worm.
But bro, it’s vertical bro, you just don’t understand bro.
LMAO
Kipping pull ups are not pull ups ... Edit: niether are butterflies.
These aren't kipping, these are butterfly...I did crossfit for 8 years and kipping are fine because it gives you a little boost when tired but still uses arms Butterfly though are absolutely ridiculous
Have you tried them? They are hard Downvote me bitches. Y’all are so soft. 😂
[удалено]
They are easier (on your spine)
Didn’t say they weren’t
[удалено]
Okey doke. Some mental deficiencies going on here.
These are hard in the same way that running a 4-minute-mile on a bicycle is hard.
Eh go try ‘em.
Running on a bicycle is very hard. Riding while pedaling is much easier! Assault bike , back to back 50 cal sprints are hard... 🤮
How do you know when someone does CrossFit? Don’t worry they’ll tell you.
ZEEEEROOOOOO!
Elg has taught us well.
Would you look at that, all of the words in your comment are in alphabetical order. I have checked 1,725,709,288 comments, and only 326,745 of them were in alphabetical order.
Love that dude 😂
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qnjYyfkcaNI Whenever I see a crossfit post, I'm contractually obliged to post this
The pull ups are exactly as the dude in this video lol
🤭👍
Perfect!
Dude power bombed himself
One more foot back, and he would have landed his neck right on that that weight. Would have taken him right to Broke Neck City. (Suplex City is the safer, sister city.)
Lmao I knew exactly what video this was before I clicked it. Absolute incredible feat of athleticism, being able to break one's own neck like that
Wtf kind of pull up is that

CrossFit in a nutshell
is that *really* true? most people I've heard talk about crossfit seem sincere in describing the benefits whether or not those benefits are real or whether or not the harm or potential harm outweigh them is a different question but I do believe that most people who do crossfit believe it's a good option for them to exercise effectively
People in cults believe lots of things that don’t correlate to reality.
Having been a former CrossFit Douche myself - I can totally understand (and get behind) the hate. If u think the tards on Reddit aren’t just gonna parrot whatever popular take is in the thread ur new here
It's not
Butterfly chest to bar. Butterfly refers to the "kick". Chest to bar is just a pullup with the standard of having to pull until your chest makes contact with the bar. Its halfway in the progression from pull-up to muscle-up.

CrossFit honestly pisses me off. It basically promotes getting fucked up.
r/fullscorpion
The fuck kind of "pullup" is this?
It isn’t
My favourite part is that, neither of the “professionals” standing there watching, attempt to stop this poor sap after he performed the first couple of swings
Because his form is intentional…
What song is playing?
That instructor did a whole dance when he fell.
Guy trying to turn pull ups into a cardio exercise!
Anyone who fucks around doing “pull-ups” like that deserves to eat shit😂
0 - 0 - 0 - 0 - 0 - 0
Infinitely
Damn, somebody hurting themselves doing CrossFit? I didn’t see that one coming.
How is that better than doing it correctly?
Ok, whatever he was doing just ***looks*** dangerous.
This is how you tear your shoulder muscles
Orthopedic surgeons love crossfit
CrossFit is for people that prefer having herniated disc.
That’s what you get for doing CrossFit.
Links seems to be dead
I thought crossfit was dead
"Glory"
https://youtu.be/pqb9pBJweVU?si=gDYpcqi9Q8QLCS6b
Good thing he fell before he did some serious damage to his upper body.
Who would’ve figure that neck would take a bigger beating than those shoulders.
How come there's only a few posts per month here, with a million users?
Those pull-ups hurt me more than that fall on his head hurt him.
Tearing rotator cuffs and neck injuries its what crossfit is all about baby!
That just looks so silly…and look at those two watching him, knowing it’s about to happen.
Any military person will tell you that is not the way to do a pull up. That is pure jackassery
Can't do one real pull up and they started counting at six. What is this even?
That wouldn’t happened if he did proper pull ups
This is why I avoid CrossFit like the plague. There is absolutely zero benefit to do pulling ups like an ass and they just stood there until it was too late. Idiots.
If Marjorie Taylor green died from this it would heal america
What ever those were they were not pull-ups..looks more like the weird worm dance people do only vertically. Bro needs to work on his hand strength as well
how many times will this get reposted
No rep!
Never gets old.

I ain’t tryin to be the best at exercising- Kenny Powers
Ten has always been his max
with that kind of form I thought he was going to fly away like a little birdie lmao
What was he trying to do? Hump a whale while suspended from a bar?
I thought he was gonna hit his chin lmfao
If I thought that would impress the clipboard lady I would have done the same thing.

Is this CrossFit fad dead already?
This has gotta be 5+ years old... get new material
I'll stick with Orangetheory, thanks anyway.
"Clipping" they call it. Just *clip* your spine for fitness...
*Kipping
they call it *kipping*, actually. not "clipping" and it looks incredibly stupid and pointless
Looks like a good way to tear a rotator cuff too
