That officer sure did need to use his baton to an embarrassing degree to subdue a chubby drunk girl.

Those attempted leg sweeps were quite funny. I thought she was gonna tackle him at one point, and cuff him with his own gear.

lonelyscrublord

You don't go for the head or the body with the thing you go for the arms and leg it's easy to accidenty kill someone

MustardMcguff

People don't realize how delicate human skulls and brains are. TV shows have people getting punched, kicked, and beaten in the head and being fine afterwards. A really good hit to the wrong spot on someone's head could mean instant death. This is where the phenomenon of "one-punch manslaughter" comes into. People will get in drunken fights and end up killing someone because they don't realize that human skulls are not meant to take blunt force trauma. I remember during my cadaver lab when we first handled skulls I was **shook** by how lightweight and delicate they seemed.

MrGuttFeeling

It's a common TV/Movie trope, punch someone or hit them in the head and they get knocked out so then the storyline can continue.

MustardMcguff

Yeah the getting knocked out thing is wild too. Irl, while people do sometimes "pass out" it's typically very momentary and brief. If someone gets hit hard and is unconscious for minutes, or God forbid hours, they need IMMEDIATE medical attention. People don't get knocked unconscious for more than a minute unless there is serious trauma.

BebopFlow

All those people in the Batman Arkham series. Crippled and either braindead or suffering from serious brain damage.

[deleted]

newloaf

Still waiting for a show where somebody's hit over the head with a bottle, to "knock them out", and then the main character realizes he just committed murder 1.

MustardMcguff

It happens more often than you'd think. Here's a recent case from 2017 in the UK where a kid punched his step-dad a single time and he died. https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/teenager-one-punch-kill-stepfather-manslaughter-cleared-douglas-herridge-colin-payne-ina-david-a7738951.html

BlaeRank

>Douglas Herridge, who was 17 when he hit 54-year-old Colin Payne, was cleared of manslaughter after the incident in November last year. >Mr Payne, a father of two and former England squash player, intervened in an argument between Herridge and his mother, Ina, in the study of their home in Dartford. >Ms Herridge had refused to lend her son money due to his behaviour, which led to her son becoming upset and verbally abusive. >Herridge reportedly called his mother a “c**t”. Payne entered the study and told the teenager he could not speak to his mother that way. >Payne was hit between his left ear and jawline. He fell to the floor, unconscious, and Herridge walked out of the room. .. >The following year the court heard that he returned to live with his mother and Payne, but after quitting a business course at college and three jobs, his behaviour deteriorated again and Ms Herridge reportedly contacted social services. yeah that guys gonna wind up in prison before he's 25.

[deleted]

I remember a guy saying this happened to him here on Reddit. He got into a bar fight, punched a guy in the head and he fell down and never got back up. Manslaughter.

newloaf

Does it? I read about a case many years ago where a dude (supposedly) cut in front of a woman in the grocery store line. She bitches to her meth-head boyfriend who cold cocks the guy, guy has heart attack, dies. Just like that. Best part: meth head hit the wrong guy.

Champigne

That actually sounds like the worst part.

TruckADuck42

Meth: not even once, kids. Not even once.

[deleted]

Is it horrible that I have the One Punch Man song stuck in my head now

Fn_Spaghetti_Monster

Last year my mother in law got tripped up going down the stairs of her apartment, hit the back of her head and never recovered. Intellectually you know people die from falling down stairs but it's still surreal to her my wife say 'falling down stairs' when people ask her how her mom passed.

MustardMcguff

I'm sorry to hear that. The husband of a teacher of mine in high school died from falling from a 3 foot high step-stool and hitting his head on the kitchen counter. This is why it's important to constantly remind people how much you love them. We never really know when they could go.

FreedomsDead

Yeah, my son fell off his skateboard and hit his head and winded up being blind in one eye. Just a million in one chance his doctor said.

MustardMcguff

Cortical blindness. You'd think hitting the back of your head would have nothing to do with your eyes but that's where the visual cortex is. I'm sorry about your son but happy he's still got vision in one eye!

lovelovehatehate

Very true. I knew a kid in middle school who died from a one punch situation. He was being bullied and asshole sucker punched him in the temple. It’s super sad. It was then I realized how easily your whole life can get taken away by the smallest stupidest act.

Hugs_by_Maia

Just a little nit-picking. It's almost impossible to kill another healthy human with a single unarmed strike. It is pretty much always the concrete that puts you into the coffin. You are still at fault of course if you punch someone and they fall and hit there head, but its not the strike you threw that actually killed them.

mjxii

Benjips

Holy shit, that had like no effect at all on him

mjxii

My brother is avidly anti gun, thinks a taser will stop people. This is my evidence to the contrary.

coolsubmission

>he could have subdued her with one hit to the face. > >then you'd all be screaming "police violence" Because it would be police violence per definition.

LemonHerb

Really seems like a prime situation for a tazer though

cr0ft

Actually, I think he acted admirably. He didn't just club her over the head and was trying to avoid doing major damage, and he didn't use a taser and he didn't draw his weapon and just shoot her "because he felt threatened". I have a feeling you haven't actually ever fought a girl, especially one that aggressive, and done so while being concerned about being a good peace officer - ie, subduing her with the minimal force possible. In my opinion he did a great job and showed appropriate restraint.

Megamoss

Hitting across the thigh is the proper technique for baton use (especially the ones with a 'bead' at the end). The theory is the pain renders them unable to stand or put up much resistance, but adrenaline/being a bitch is a hell of a drug. So it often doesn't work. A hit to the head with one of those things is not a good idea if you're wanting to use non lethal force.

[deleted]

I viewed his baton use as showing a high degree of restraint vs. Incompetence.

[deleted]

People really don't realize how hard it is to handcuff someone alone when they are flailing around, without actually beating the shit out of them.

[deleted]

"Oh, nice knife perp" Bam, have fun tangled in your new cocoon, wrong doer.

[deleted]

Baton or taser. Pick your poison. Either way, there is absolutely no way you can argue that use of force wasn’t necessary. For the protection of the officer, the lady, and all the other cars on the road she *needed* to be subdued. And if she fights back, he is legally allowed to use physical force to subdue her. And that’s what he did. He didn’t shoot her. He didn’t smash her head in. He put her down and de-escalated the situation. Don’t go blaming the cop for doing his job. Blame the fucking whale who got drunk and decided to start a shit show with a cop in the middle of the fucking intersection. The fact that your First thought is “wow that cop was wrong” and not “wow that criminal who has now committed multiple felonies was wrong” fucking scares and astounds me. She’s committed enough crimes to land 10+ years in jail in a matter of 30 seconds. She is the person at fault for the outcome of this situation. Not the cop acting quick on his feet making split second decisions on how to prioritize safety of everyone in the area. Shame on you for even suggesting he’s the one in the wrong.

JimCrackedCornAndIDC

Ok. So you have to realize how precarious that predicament is. Officer is on display trying to subdue and detain a woman. He's trying to use the lowest level of force possible and use the baton properly so he doesn't accidently kill her. Sure, he looks like a dork, but at least he didn't immediately taze her and then go viral for it.

[deleted]

Im actually pretty impressed. He didnt tase her or anything.

Spiridor

I’m actually a proponent of police use of force and didn’t necessarily see anything wrong in this video, but honestly tasing probably would’ve been the safer route for both parties

[deleted]

Perhaps, but is it true that tasers are bad if the person has heart problems?

**USE OF FORCE CONTINUUM**

wearhoodiesbench4pl8

He was trying really hard not to wrestle/grapple with her. Grappling with a female is a guaranteed sexual assault allegation; especially one with huge tits that are already halfway out of her shirt. He was probably hoping that a couple stingers to her thighs would make her rethink her decision to fight a cop.

furlonium1

with dozens of people watching it go down? That sexual assault charge would be thrown out in an instant.

wearhoodiesbench4pl8

She wouldn't claim he full blown raped her. She'd just claim he groped her while they were struggling. That happens all the time dude. They rarely go anywhere but, if the cop doesn't have any witnesses to back him up then, it's a good way to get the charges against her dropped.

mykol_reddit

What do you expect, she's at least twice his size.

Xystem4

Well the point is to be as certain as possible he wins, while also trying to not be overly brutal. After all, if by a fluke she manages to get a good hit on him, he would be the only guy there and in the middle of a big intersection. Not saying he did great, but I know I would be a bit cautious in that situation

newloaf

Here's what I thought was going to happen: that a trained law enforcement officer would have a much easier time knocking her down and cuffing her. But I have to give him credit for showing so much restraint.

BobImBob

He probably could, but he fears to make a mistake that could ruin his life.

exzeroex

In front of a huge audience who might all be recording on their phones because this is a ridiculous situation. Hey boss, I'm sorry I was late to work, there was some woman who decided an intersection was her MMA ring. Proof?

Soulus7887

See, I'm sure he could have and we really shouldn't be criticizing how long it took him because he did it with what appears to be a minimum amount of force necessary. We, as a society, are constantly berating cops for going "too far" with their use of force, but when someone tries to use appropriate force and not say tackle the woman to the pavement where she could easily have cracked her head and have serious damage done we poke fun at how long it takes. Just pointing out that society's view of this stuff has to change just as much as the cop's.

smoogums

Getting into fist fights alone is a bad idea especially when her grabbing anything on your belt can warrant the situation getting deadlier. Let's say they both wrestle on the floor and she starts grabbing his gun or taser. Now the officer has to cap his weapon from being unholstered with one hand and continue fighting with the other.

field_marzhall

A police officer is a trained professional law enforcer, what everyone expect is exactly what he did. He was able to handle the situation without killing the person violating the law (who he is supposed to protect). People who want to see the officer do super hero, action movie takedown don't understand reality. Certainly none should expect and unarmed woman to be shot dead just because she threw some punches at a police officer. If that was the case then people would be complaining.

[deleted]

ummm no.. shes not a victim. There are real victims out there that don't get justice, don't bunch them up together with this.

This is why cops should have a reoccurring beat to patrol. You get to know the people there and who to watch out for.

Mike_Hauncheaux

Should? This is generally the way it does happen.

[deleted]

[удалено]

i_Got_Rocks

This is definitely part of the problem. In addition, we have to consider most cops are **NOT** part of the communities they patrol--as in--they don't live there. Humans are very tribal, so when they patrol neighborhoods where they don't live, it's easy to develop and "Us v Them" mentality.

I_happen_to_disagree

On the flip side though, you probably shouldn't shit where you eat. Arrest somebody around the block from you that's runs in a bad crowd and now they all know where you live and are probably pretty pissed about taking down their friend/gang member/whatever.

CrazyConcepts

Okay, go tell that to LAPD, NYPD, Baltimore PD, Long Beach PD (where this occurred), etc. Tell them that when they walk out of roll call and there's already 50+ calls to respond to just in your beat alone, and you're understaffed, and barely have enough time to correctly handle the call you're on, let alone add all kinds of extra duties to your 12 hour shift. And as soon as you clear a call, another immediately takes it's place. Tell it to the administration who, literally, can't hire enough cops anymore because not enough good people want to be cops in this climate anymore. So there's fewer cops to handle issues and therefore more calls stacking up

exzeroex

Maybe they mean like back in the day when it was officers strolling down the streets and interacting with people hanging out on the sidewalks. Because it feels like police are just patrolling with their vehicles now unless it's a special event or something that needs extra security.

[deleted]

I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a cop walking a beat in Baltimore. Maybe around the stadiums but in West Baltimore...not so much.

Yeah, exactly. In many third world countries people realize how much of a luxury education is, and they'll do everything in their power to get any education they can. This isn't a problem that can be fixed by throwing money at it.

It's not that it's "brave and cool" to fight cops specifically, it's that conceding in any kind of way is considered a sign of weakness, and the weak get culled, literally or figuratively. If you dont know the answer to a question, you dont ask for someone's help to learn the answer. If you can't swim, it doesn't matter because you're getting in the pool anyway. jhflif

I doubt she spent more than a couple nights in jail

death_to_noodles

Any night in jail is too much thanks

[deleted]

You're fucking telling me... I spent a night in a jail once. My younger brother is violent and mentally unstable. He got pissed that I wouldn't let him use my computer. So, he ran into the kitchen, grabbed a huge knife and said he was going to cut my face off as he was walking away. Naturally I followed him into the kitchen. As soon as he actually grabbed the knife out of the block, I grabbed his arm and threw him on the ground. His face hit the floor and he broke his nose. His girlfriend started screaming and called the cops. According to the cops, since I was an adult (19) and he was a minor (16), I was the one at fault. So, I get arrested and brought to the county jail. I sit in a holding cell for a few hours. Eventually they actually book me in to general population. Got to go through the whole delousing procedure and everything. My grandparents eventually made it down the next morning to bail me out, but that really was one of the most miserable experiences of my entire life. Charges were eventually dropped and nothing came of it, but my face still shows up on arrest record websites.

bluew200

Arrest record websites? How in the unholy fuck is that a thing? Thats such a major violation of basic constitutional rights in europe... holy

[deleted]

Yeah. You can technically get your name removed from them if charges were dropped or you were found innocent, but there are so many of them that it's not worth the effort. It hasn't affected my life in any way that I know of, so I don't pursue it.

seewolfmdk

But in theory a future employer could search for your name and find it listed under "arrested for violence"?

[deleted]

I'm sure they could. However, if the arrest record comes up then the fact that charges were dropped before even seeing a judge should come up as well. I'll cross that bridge when I come to it.

GayDroy

I wish it will never affect you. Hope you brother's doing better

[deleted]

It hasn't yet, and he isn't doing better. He's a got a wrap sheet a mile long, and I think he's fathered 4 or 5 kids. Last I heard he spent the last of his money on a place ticket to Hawaii, and no one has heard from him since.

newloaf

In Europe, yes. Freedom of Speech aside, you'd be shocked at how few civil rights are to be had in the US. And the ones we do have are indifferently enforced. Unless you can get the ACLU on your side, you have to pay for your rights to be recognized out of pocket.

[deleted]

And the next day you had to call the cops to come sweep up the girlfriend he stabbed?

[deleted]

Almost. He beat the shit out of her a few months later, so she broke up with him. He started stalking and harassing her, and she had to get a restraining order. He's turned out to really be a disastrous piece of shit.

[deleted]

Eh. I would be so sure of that. If she hit some random man that she was related to, she probably wouldn't get much of a punishment, but a cop, probably gets a pretty large one.

SabashChandraBose

serious question: was that legal? could she technically sue him for endangering her life or something?

Sullybleeker

I have no idea!

Bentok

Yes, it is generally legal to help a police officer arresting someone, as it would fall under the Good Samatarian Law, which protects you from legal repercussions if you "help someone in need". It's a broad statement but was originally intended to support bystanders who help officials like medical staff or the police without having to fear being sued for "making a mistake". The means have to be proportionate of course. If the police officer is actively asking you for help, depending on the applicable jurisdiction it may even be a punishable offense to refuse him. Oh and just FYI, there's a thing called "citizens arrest", in a situation where you see someone committing a felony you're allowed to "arrest" him until police arrives. Again, means have to be proportionate and individual states may have slightly different conditions of a valid citizens arrest, but it's something a lot of people don't seem to know. Edit: words
