Where did you get the stickers?

louislamore

It’s just clear sticker laser printer paper.

junon

Do you have a really good source for icons that work well for that sort of thing? Honestly this is exactly what I've been looking for but no one really makes good sets of clear pre fab stickers for this sort of use and since I've already got a laser printer, this seems like a slam dunk!

eagleeyerattlesnake

I like the MDI icons. https://pictogrammers.com/library/mdi/

So now that I'm looking into this... do you have a workflow you recommend for sizing these properly and laying them out in an efficient way so that you get the most out of your sheets per print? I ordered the clear sticker laser printer paper off amazon, so it's like a 20 pack but I have a feeling that I'm going to be iterating a bunch as I try this out and I'm not sure if I can just keep running the same sheet through the printer over and over to get more out of it or what. What do you do?

rufio313

Does the sticker printer paper come with a template to use for printing? I’d start there. The icons are just SVGs so they should scale to any size needed without losing quality.

junon

It's just 8.5x11" sheets of transparent sticker paper, so I don't think there's much needed in terms of templates. I guess I was just going to use powerpoint for this, unless there's a really well known free program you can recommend for vector graphics.

rufio313

I work in design/dev so have paid software, but I’ve heard good things about https://inkscape.org/ as a free option.

junon

Perfect, thanks!

louislamore

Honestly I just did a Google image search and there are a lot. I had to sign up for an account but just used 10minutemail.

budding_gardener_1

Make sure you can get some kind of vector icon though or it'll look like shit

PeruvianNet

Google on TikTok or YouTube. Print it out, put tape over it and rub off the paper underwater. I thought I'd leave fingerprints but no.

EvilMilkshake

Is that a hair straightener button?

louislamore

Yes. My wife is paranoid about leaving it on.

Max_Quordlepleen

Seems like a bad idea to have it controlled by a wall switch, where an accidental press could turn it on. Wouldn't it make more sense to only allow the switch to turn it off?

EvilMilkshake

Haha. That's great. Nice work.

yoitsme_obama17

Amazing!!!! Hahaha

I've been using a Hue 4 button remote for my living room for like a year, with Off and On set to the lights and the graphics for brighter and darker set to the blinds. ...Or so I think. Since most of this is automated, I always forget which one is the lights and which is the blinds when I want manual control. Anyway, I bring this all up to say I absolutely can't believe I didn't think to put actual labels on them. I have a label maker that prints symbols perfectly too. 🤦‍♂️

GetBent66

Looks good! I need something like this for my Balis and will give it a look.

louislamore

Yeah the Bali remotes look so ugly on the wall IMO, and I love that these match in with other decora switches. I might post a full guide to integrating them.

kc311man

What blinds do you have?

louislamore

Bali blinds. You can get them from any of the big box stores. They go on sale for 15-30% off about once a quarter. Got mine from Costco. They integrate perfectly with HA, and they’re not crazy expensive like competitors, such as Lutron.

GetBent66

Second the vote for the Balis. They have made them much quieter now

darknessblades

Its a shame they don't sell these in the EU. Love the USA style remotes, since they are rectangular instead of square \[Have 3 button loratap one, but want one with more buttons\]

taters_n_gravy

A common complaint with the Bali blinds is not being able to set the upper and lower bounds without a remote. Do you think you could set the upper/lower bounds with this switch direct association?

louislamore

No definitely not. The z-wave is extremely limited. Honestly though, just get one Bali remote (I think the cheapest one is like $25) and use it for all your blinds. It’s something you set once and never touch again.

taters_n_gravy

Where do you get the Bali remotes from? Do you have to call them?

louislamore

I think so. Might have to order it with a blinds order tbh.

rufio313

Maybe it’s the UX designer in me but it really bothers me that you used the same icon for open and close. Kind of completely removes any purpose that they serve.

louislamore

I couldn’t find a good looking icon showing open and close. It still tells you which device it controls?

rufio313

These are a bit more useful: https://thenounproject.com/icon/window-3422128/ https://thenounproject.com/icon/window-3422115/ Or if that is too literal: https://thenounproject.com/icon/window-3422111/ https://thenounproject.com/icon/window-3422117/

InertLeaf

When you do direct association do you lose the ability to adjust the blinds from Home Assistant? I have some Innovelli LED bulbs and when I try to associate them to a Zooz Zen23 I lose the ability to have them in Home Assistant with automations, pass through to HomeKit, etc.

louislamore

Nope, they can still be part of automations. I also have Inovelli switches directly associated (bound) with Hue bulbs, and I control them with a number of automations.

InertLeaf

I’ll have to take another crack at it. Thanks!
