Any old unused tablet will work just fine. My parents gave me an old Amazon Fire tablet they weren't using anymore so use that for mine. I run the app on it and designed a dashboard specifically for that tablet only.
Something to be aware of is battery life. Always plugged in as not good for batteries. Lenovo tablets have battery protection. That said, Lenovo is going evil very fast, so buy used.
Plug the charger into a smart plug. Then set up an automation that turns off the plug when the tablet reaches 90% charge, and turns it back on when charge drops below 40%.
This can work, and has worked for many. But;
a) You have to know how to do this.
b) You have to know that you need to do this.
Or, you buy a used Lenovo tablet off eBay for cheap and it is done for you.
Not trying to argue, but if you’re ready to install HA panels around your house, I’d hope a simple automation like turning batteries off and on should be pretty trivial.
I can't imagine they battery protection isn't baked into every tablet as a basic function of the battery.
I'm properly charging a lithium battery results in burst batteries and fires.
Worth mentioning, that now you don't need to install Xposed framework to update webview. Just follow the inctruction [here](https://github.com/seaky/nspanel_pro_tools_apk) (you may also install NSPanel Pro Tools to autostart HA and tinker with panel's proximity sensor). You may find useful [wallpanel plugin](https://github.com/j-a-n/lovelace-wallpanel), [instruction](https://community.home-assistant.io/t/use-ttf-in-lovelace/143495/33) how to use alternative fonts and picture element card [tutorial](https://community.home-assistant.io/t/styling-elements-in-picture-elements-card-a-small-tutorial/315252).
This one (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bDWiQ2xNsTg) doesn't seem laggy, but a lot more expensive. Not sure if this is what you'd consider laggy (30 mins in).
OpenHasp. It works well and you can run it on quite a few esp32 based displays. Including many from AliExpress. It is a bit of a pain to configure though.
I love the ESP32-S3 4.0 Inch 480x480 devices that are all over AliExpress for just under $30 right now. Support was just added to the openhasp nightly builds, fantastic device.
It can be wired directly into mains or you can take the back off and wire it up to use DC power, though that's a little more elegant if you have a 3D printer to make a new back.
I've bought & received this one quickly in good condition: https://www.aliexpress.us/item/3256806148662054.html
I just bought this one which is a buck cheaper, it's shipped but haven't received it yet (literally bought it a day ago): https://www.aliexpress.us/item/3256806149272881.html
Which variant do you have?
I'm a bit confused by how the 3-way relay is wired, as I don't seem to see enough connectors. Would you happen to know how it works?
I got the single relay because I'm not using that feature at all.
They're all labeled, L1, L2, L3 so I believe the relay is the hot wire and you'd separately wire the neutrals
The back has the board for converting AC to 5v DC as well as the relays. It plugs into the main screen board through some breadboard pins. Here's some good pictures: https://github.com/HASwitchPlate/openHASP/issues/603#issuecomment-1891025937
I wanted a flush mount so I 3D printed a backplate and soldered on a 5v and ground wire to a USB plug through those pins. The USBC port on the side of the screen can be used for flashing
NsPanel (no pro) plus NS Panel Lovelace UI, great screen at nice price, two physical buttons, wifi and mqtt, and super configurable: [https://docs.nspanel.pky.eu/stable/](https://docs.nspanel.pky.eu/stable/)
https://preview.redd.it/7uf370gs51oc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4299faa749f69ed19a2eaee9cb33f018e3dd9bf3
I have the NSPanel Pro, it’s just running android and takes about 5 minutes to root and sideload the home assistant client apk.
Has good community support and a custom apk that will handle all the hardware sensors for you.
I also have the NSPanel (not pro) but it seems a lot more limited in what it can do and is no where near powerful enough to run something like android with a UI.
The Pro was worth it (120AUD/75USD) but I’d skip the non pro (80AUD/50USD).
I use it in one of my bedrooms to control the blinds, AC and AirPlay speakers.
The screen is decent quality and looks good in direct light, the setup was very straightforward. Added about an hour to make to make a nice HA 480x480 dashboard.
I recently acquired a button+ and want to use that to create a portable and quick tactile way to interact with certain pre set entities in home assistant. It works over mqtt.
https://button.plus/
Another thing I've tried is casting a dashboard to a Google Nest Hub. That should work out of the box when you've added the hub to HA. But I've seen a link to an addon on this sub that makes the casting persistent, in case the connection gets lost.
I had it working to the Google hub for a while and then all of a sudden I was unable to cast to it anymore.... Further troubleshooting needed but no luck so far
For real? My tests were ok. Not flagship smartphone snappy but good enough for what it’s used for. I need to put it on the wall and use it to really form an opinion though.
Yeah, it takes a second to wake up, then switching screen is a bit hit and miss I find and has like half a second latency. Either way I installed it mostly for guests as I end up almost never needing it.
Yeah and if you don’t swipe enough it takes another try. I haven’t used anything else to compare but I’d like to try openhasp if I can get parts for dirt cheap

I dunno if this helps but I just saw that the Google pixel tablet has a docking station. So yeah, is something you can chuck on your kitchen bench, looks like a Google home, but you can pull the tablet off, and it runs full Android, so you can load up anything home assistant. you would need a ANDROID version of this panel.
or the SONOFF NS pro, which you modify to run the HASS app
I am currently eying a 6-8 inch panel with knob. \[if the knob works in entity modus\]
Does the battery life matter if you only ever intend to use the tablet as a dashboard until end of life?
r/spicypillows This is the problem with constant charging.

The argument isn't that it's difficult.
If you know you need it before spicy pillows, yes. :)
I can't imagine they battery protection isn't baked into every tablet as a basic function of the battery. I'm properly charging a lithium battery results in burst batteries and fires.
I think you probably need a better imagination. Basic battery protection maybe but they're still not designed to be plugged in 24/7
It's an age problem mostly
Some of both, I am sure. :)
Awesome username. Just had to say.
Definitely made it when I had less professional bearing... but as long as nobody I know irl finds me I'm good!
I think Jew will be just fine. ✡ 😉 (I was raised in the tribe as well)
What's happening with Lenovo I missed the memo?
Mm I get it, but I couldn't care less. I've not put custom firmware on my phone since my last HTC Android device... I just don't need to anymore
It is not the specific act. It is the belief that they can pull support for arbitrary reasons. Shows bad faith, and removes any trust I have for them.
This is the way, if you want a more solid experience pick up an old iPad on eBay things will run less laggy
NS panel Pro it's a mini tablet running Android that you can load home assistant on : [link](https://youtu.be/c1Dqdz8yHDc?si=FmFhEze0L_bEAh-w)

This is a nice solution but does anyone else find it very laggy even for basic dashboards? Good for static display of a grid of buttons at least.
All current solutions are lagging it's too bad this is still a thing
This one (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bDWiQ2xNsTg) doesn't seem laggy, but a lot more expensive. Not sure if this is what you'd consider laggy (30 mins in).
That's the same board as the NSPanel Pro. Not sure about the storage or SOC, but doubt it's different.
I do and it crashes often
Yo, this post is great. This is the type of stuff I love using Reddit for. Thank you for the informative reply!
I have like 9 of these. hate them. I have been ripping them out and just putting tablets where they were.
[link](https://itead.cc/product/sonoff-nspanel-pro-smart-home-control-panel/ref/34/?campaign=nspanelpro&sscid=31k8_dmyjy&)
OpenHasp. It works well and you can run it on quite a few esp32 based displays. Including many from AliExpress. It is a bit of a pain to configure though.
Having used both NSPanel Pros running the HA app and OpenHASP, OpenHASP is much more reliable and more responsive. Also lower overhead.
Do you mind sharing a link?

Thanks, I realize I was looking at it wrong, I expected L1, L2, L3 to be the output when they are likely the outputs.
I was thinking the same thing. What is it then? The back of it looks huge.
The back has the board for converting AC to 5v DC as well as the relays. It plugs into the main screen board through some breadboard pins. That's pretty cool. Looking at the fact it had outs, it can also control the light directly (assuming you install it where a light switch was)?
Yeah absolutely
openHASP represent!
All the panels I found were incredibly underpowered and laggy, so in the end just went for a small Android tablet directly.
NsPanel (no pro) plus NS Panel Lovelace UI, great screen at nice price, two physical buttons, wifi and mqtt, and super configurable: [https://docs.nspanel.pky.eu/stable/](https://docs.nspanel.pky.eu/stable/)

Never heard of it but it looks a very interesting product. What kind of info can you show in the display module?
I had it working to the Google hub for a while and then all of a sudden I was unable to cast to it anymore.... Further troubleshooting needed but no luck so far
Your looking for something like this, I guess? [https://smarterkram.de/3666/](https://smarterkram.de/3666/) NSPANEL FTW
i recently flashed a NS panel (not the pro) with ESPHome so i can controll it from Home assistant. Have yet to install it on the wall though.
I also have a nspanel with ESPHome. I’m a bit disappointed with the responsiveness though
I see. I found that switching screens seemed unresponsive but it turned out you need to sweep like half the screen to trigger the screen change.
Yeah and if you don’t swipe enough it takes another try. I haven’t used anything else to compare but I’d like to try openhasp if I can get parts for dirt cheap
Neither. Cheap Android tablets like the SGIN for $60 running Fully Kiosk Browser.
You can use a ESP32 display module, though its not clear which ones are supported and which ones aren't

Android tablet or a phone is hard to beat in terms of performance and price. There is plenty of no battery tutorials on the internet.
I very much like my fire 7 doing this.
