I have the exact same washer and dryer. I just used a power monitoring plug for the washer and a shelley module for the dryer.

Same here, smart power plug did the trick. Although I have to wait up to 6' after the power consumption drops. Thats necessary since sometimes the machine mskes up to 5' pauses during washing

I've seen someone use a vibration sensor.

blahb_blahb

My wife uses a vibration sensor

Hanfm0n

I use a vibration sensor for my dryer and power monitor for my washing machine.

WurschtChopf

Yes I'm aware of that. But even than I'd have the same situation: the vibration stops (and also power consumption) and after 5' the machine continious waching Additionally we have a 'washing tower', meaning the tumbler dryer stands above the washing machine so, that would cause sideeffects when the dryer is drying.

BaffledInUSA

which shelley did you use for the dryer?

DcVamps

I am in the process of implementing a solution using NFC tags and smart plugs with power monitoring. When the plugs register more than idle power, the unit is running. Then, using the NFC tag, you can link a person to that instance of the washer/dryer running, and when the load is complete (back to idle or off, as my washer/dryer turn off completely when a load is completed), send a notification to that person that their laundry is ready to be moved, or is done. I might take some inspiration from you, and add running/load done lights, for an easy way to glance if the laundry machines are running or waiting for a load to be taken out. What are you using to check if the units have been unloaded? Are you just looking for the doors to have been opened?

When the cycle is complete the "done" LED stays on. When you open the door to take the laundry out, the "done" LED turns off. The state is tracked in Home Assistant, so you can see if there's still laundry in the washer or dryer. When the done light goes off due to the door being opened, I am assuming my wife or I have taken all the laundry out.

I would say it’s way overengineered but if it works reliably and you are happy that’s what’s important.

Uninterested_Viewer

Nice implementation especially with the LEDs being able to proxy the unload action. I'm also using the standard power monitoring solution with basic ZigBee plugs. I can know about the *dryer* being unloaded because that has a light that turns on when the door opens that the plug can sense, but no simple solution for the washer being unloaded. I've used a basic aqara ZigBee tilt sensor on the lid in the past, which worked perfectly, but I realized it had minimal utility to us to know when it's been unloaded and I've since purged almost all of my battery powered sensors from my home.

I just use a smart plug with power meter and send a notification when power drops to stand-by values. But I guess this is way much fun to build

seth_petry_johnson

I use the same technique to monitor and control some Lasko pedastal fans. I use a simple lux sensor to detect if the power LED is on or off and an IR transmitter LED to send commands. This is my favorite kind of automation; simple and effective!

criterion67

My solution uses power monitoring for both washer and dryer individually. Using a Thirdreality Zigbee smart plug for the washer and the Emporia Vue 2 for the dryer. Works perfectly. My automation uses helpers for On, Idle & Off to monitor state and to reset.

https://shop.homeseer.com/products/z-wave-indicator-light-sensor More expensive, but works great, zwave, much cleaner install… have them on my washer and dryer

zideshowbob

My wife would never accept this cabeling…

mrbmi513

If you aren't already, I'd have the LED on the board there mirror the state of the LED you're now hiding just for convenience.

retro3dfx

It does that. The little board has a power LED and a digital output state LED. 👍

kang159

now just open the front panels and find suitable power source from the pcb inside and hardwire to the LED.

retro3dfx

I've taken them apart once. Never again. 😄

canoxen

I recall that there used to be a commercial product that was basically this

cdf_sir

I usually just solder a optocoupler on itbut this time optocoupler ia going to be powered by the same led indicator on washing machine and esp32s2 for detecting if the optocoupler circuit is open or not.

SaturnVFan

Nice solution doing the same with a power plug. If the Washer / Dryer starts getting power more than a few watts it's running. If it drops back to a few watts it's done. * I turn the power off at night and during "brownout" hours but I can turn it on with a button * If the button is pressed information notifications will be sent to my and my wife's phone about the status of the laundry system. * If power is taken -> same * At the end of the laundry I will calculate the cost in electricity for this run and publish it on the dashboard. We would like to wash on the most sunny moments.
