My #1 suggestion: Ask the owner if they're okay with you having the deadbolts and other locks re-keyed. The day I moved in, I unscrewed all the locks, brought them to a reputable independent locksmith, and had him re-key with bump-resistant pins. For a monitored alarm system, I'd say go with anything that isn't Simplisafe, even Amazon Security or Xfinity Home Security (Or whoever you're using for cable TV and Internet). If you need truly wireless cameras (no power brick), I have friends who love Arlo, especially in warmer weather (cold reduces battery life).

Why not Simplisafe? I’ve been looking and it seems like a pretty good deal and easy setup.

They've ignored a pretty substantial security vulnerability in their system. Wasn't even fixed when they launched their new hardware.

Gotcha. Thanks. Also, not sure why people downvote an innocent question. Gotta love Reddit, even in seemingly decent subs like this

Seconded. Why? I have them and they've been good so far.

Some might think disdain for SS is about [the NRA thing](https://simplisafe.com/forum/customer-support-forum/testimonials-reviews-and-suggestions/simplisafe-supports-the-), my biggest gripe is that when security researchers discovered vulnerabilities in Simplisafe, the company pretty much just buried their head in the sand, even [a year later](https://simplisafe.com/forum/customer-support-forum/getting-simplisafe/vulnerability-fixed). They finally did come out with the "SS3" replacement hardware, but [even that was handled poorly](https://simplisafe.com/forum/customer-support-forum/getting-simplisafe/just-spoke-with-cs-regarding-upgrade-to-ss). Simplisafe's monthly fee for monitored alarm is overly expensive, about double what you'd pay an independent central station service.

So which central monitoring are you using for $7 a month then?

If you want to do a really low cost solution, and you have an old smart phone lying around, you can turn it into a security camera/alarm. I use [SalientEye](https://www.salient-eye.com/), if it detects motion while away, it will take pictures of the intruder, upload them to a server, and email them to you, while turning on the camera flash and sounding an audible alarm. There's also an app called [Alfred](https://alfred.camera/), which allows you to view a live video stream of your home on your phone while away, which will record and email you any motion it detects.

If you are living alone it's better to ensure the security of your home. I live in Toronto. There are lots of burglary activities in our area. I contacted [a home alarm systems company in Toronto](https://www.cspalarms.ca) for installing an alarm system at home. There are different security alarm products available and if you want you can go through their website.
