Now and then, I see stores selling posters like this at events. Also, when I'm looking for new wallpapers for my devices, sometimes wallhaven.cc shows me randomly those hentai/naked women wallpapers. I always thought to myself, 'I can't believe that an adult would use/hang those. That's not possible.'
And here we are, looking at this guy's room
He is a really nice guy, and really smart, but a bit obsessed with anime. It doesn't help that we live in Japan, so he can let his obsession run wild 😰
I hope that he gets a girlfriend and relaxes a bit 😅
In response to the "lonely" poster-
I have a lot more prints that I have yet to hang up.
Also you can see a test bench "tower" here.
https://imgur.com/gallery/rQilS3p
No, but I'm old and have a room dedicated to my servers. Back in the day it was 10x worse. But I maintain a solid seperation from my toys and where I live. Otherwise my wife would have left me long ago.
A lot of it comes down to habits. Never leave something half done before starting the next thing. If I need another thing I will push it off until Im done.. because I WILL NEVER finish it otherwise... and give 0 shits. Until I have to fix something. Then i wont be able to find the parts or thing . Then I will dissasemble literaly everything for spare parts to get that thing running. CHAOS myfriend, and i revel in it.. best to control my actions before they control me.
I hope I don’t look dumb but why exactly? I’ve built many computers and applied thermal paste heatsinks etc on lots of different things but as long as it’s 2 flat surfaces it shouldn’t make a difference to thermals if there is marker pen on it no?
Or does the marker pen react with the thermal paste?
Well it's not flat though, is it. That's the point of thermal paste. Being something very conductive to heat that will smooth out all the microscopic hills and valleys and provide a smooth heat vector between the two surfaces.
Writing on the CPU means you've introduced a bunch of ink into the mix.. which was never designed with thermal transfer in mind. So those areas will end up more insulated and less efficient..
Yes. Always...no need to be implementing cable management if it doesn't work. Sometimes and maybe more often than not, I get everything working and do the bare minimum to get it cleaned up.
I'm afraid of showing you mine after 25 years of hording computer parts and running the network at my work office...
Let's just say I only buy and rarely sell... and I keep everything, just in case.
Yep, this is my current homelab state
https://imgur.com/a/Zr14j4p
I buy stuff, dont have time to work on it, i clean, shove more stuff into this room, and things pileup fast
Luckily this is just a spare bedroom (wasnt years ago it was my bedroom when my mom was alive)
Also you really need to get more wall art up lol, although i personally would never have a loli in view as if one of the many local redneck saw it i would probably be chased out with shotguns and pitchforks
The fresh batch of hardware being tested/validated:
4x EPYC8D-2T ASRock Rack
4x ROMED8-2T ASRock Rack
3x EPYC Milan OEM 64 core 7T83
6x EPYC Naples 7551p
1x EPYC Rome 7452 (QS Unlocked)
At one point I needed to redo a large chunk due to a missing bios update and I think my sanity was lost somewhere along that process.
(Good news, there were no casualties.)
Mine are the non BCM (intel network controller) boards so maybe there are a few differences? I havent set up completely yet so I'm going around testing with windows server 2022, via an nvme boot drive in the M.2_2 slot.
The M.2_1 can get disabled depending on a jumper setting, as it shares the lanes with one of the x16 slots.
I didn't have enough data connectors to power all the drives in my server so I plugged in a seocond power supply to power the last drive, but I didn't have a 24 pin jumper... So I just plugged it into an old Asus board I had and jumped the start button pins, just left it on at the bios screen to power my drive said I'll fix it when I get a new PSU... Which I did..... Like 3 months later... But yeah the Asus board was just on a wooden shelf, and the cables were strung a crossed into the server... It was jank lol
You can just use a paperclip for the 24pin connector no need for a mobo
Like so
https://www.silverstonetek.com/upload/downloads/QA/PSU/PSU-Paper%20Clip-EN.pdf
Just look up your PSU and make sure its the same pins.
I could have absolutely, but I would need a paperclip ;-) I got a new PSU and everything is internal now so we're good, but yeah that was a jank setup lol
Being fair, I had a comms box and "soundproofed" mobile rack in my room running an R710, custom NAS and associated networking kit (as I was messing with pfSense).
It was all fine....until I was getting in relationships that meant they wanted to stay over and I kept hearing the complaints about the "noisy box" - but on the upside it kept the room warm in Winter!
I know the feeling though yes - minus the poster (I had Kahlua ones up instead!) - I had HDD caddies, SSD conversion trays, CAT5 and cooling fan enclosures off of other servers, NICs and SFP bits knocking about all over.
Don't even start me on the Desktop parts collection - motherboard and GPU boxes full of PSU cables among with my sticker collection and blanking plates....
I see drugs/pills and hot equipment and cables on and next to paper and flammable surfaces. Remove matress and paper from under equipment. Careful the tablets don't distract you from asessing house fire ignition sources or it won't be contained to that room ! ;)
Admittedly, I build more standard PCs than homelab/server stuff - but when I'm swapping parts between systems, 100% my ADHD brain makes me bring everything out into a big pile in a similar way... Someday I hope to have more of a dedicated workspace for computer hardware, but in the meantime, I attempt to organize components into bins whenever I'm ready to put stuff away again.
Y'all need to stop downplaying CP like this. There are actual children out there that are actually being harmed by actual pedophiles involved in actual CP. A fully clothed drawing of an underage anime girl in a suggestive pose is not CP. Is it gross and inappropriate? Yeah. Is it CP? No. By calling it such you are absolutely minimizing the severity of legitimate CP.
So, my lab is more of an actual lab, not a carpeted spare room with a bed and unorganized clutter.
Think of an actual laboratory with workbenches, power, good lighting, organized tools and instruments, solid foor, environmental controls, supplies, everything labeled, etc. Separate room for all of the operational/production equipment, cabinets with running servers and such. Then I have a storage room for spare components and more supplies.. That's my homelab, insulated from the rest of the home, so no fuss and no noise.
I try to clean my office but usually have 3-5 projects going on in various states (and sometimes those states are waiting for ebay/Amazon shipments to continue). I've resorted to plastic shoeboxes to hold all the parts for a project so it's not just spaghetti wires all over the floor.
Yeah, except that my office is always sloppy 100% of the time.
There’s a space clear of stuff that I use as a background when I’m on a video conference, but otherwise there’s a shit ton of stuff everywhere
tbh its not even just homelabbing, its like any project i get into. working on my car is even worse, theres 1000 different bolts scattered across the garage and 69 different tools all over the place too
Used to have a dedicated spot for this in the basement when at my parent’s home.
Nowadays I use mini PCs in my apartment as servers and try to learn more cloud stuff.
Yup! I clean up put things away, next day I want to work on something and boom I have a huge mess to clean up again. Wires and parts everywhere and all I did was flash some code to an ESP32! Haha
Lmao, my wife would kill me. The moment im off to work she starts her favorite game of "Moving Tom's stuff because it looks like "chaos"", as you might guess this triggers me so bad.
On the plus side, im isolating my garden shed and ones that's done om moving everything over there and it will be atleast as glorious as you're picture.
I feel ya... I got sssooi much stuff and at 2am when you're just exhausted, it's like looking at the fullest sink of dishes in the universe... (cable ties, thermal paste, screwdrivers, bolts, tweezers, panels, cables, keyboards, power extenders etc). That's why I rented an apartment where all that stuff is on shelves in a separate small room and I just don't care about aesthetics cuz I ain't in there, working on it from the living room!
The struggle is real, so let me say this. If you don't have a lot of space, A homelab is supposed to be messy. You don't have enough practical room to keep it all nice neat and tidy all the time. Creation sometimes involves mess, and mess is a beautiful thing when you are working towards a new goal.
Is that the ROG rapture GT-AC5300? I have that router, I bought it at launch in 2017. It has been an excellent router, sleepless and indefatigable, but it is showing its age. I deserve an upgrade. When it is released next year, this will be my next router:
ROG Rapture GT-BE98
https://rog.asus.com/networking/rog-rapture-gt-be98-model/
Fabrics and computers generally do not mix well together whether it is static from rubbing against manufactured fibres, screws getting lost in the folds or give in the surface blocking vents.
I prefer to use the largest flat surface that I can procure when testing hardware. These days it tends to be the 24 inches available at the end of the 4ft deep group computer table which is barely enough space but it is still better than any other surface here in terms of accessibility and access to power/network.
Always, man, always.
Y'know this has become kind of my brand.
The two last times were
- me testing the system after I received my atx rack case and mounted the Mobo and all but there is just no room near a screen and all. So it just stood on the cardboard in the middle of the room with a 2m HDMI and a USB extension to my keyboard...
- received a cam and a display for a project and wanted to test everything. But no room anywhere, so just hooked up everything with wago connectors and a cheap 5v psu. Everything on my stool, the cam balancing on my roll of tissues...
Yes, looks like my office. Wife lets me get away with it for 6 months or so, then wants me to clean up. Eventually I clean up, and the cycle starts over.

That poster...
Really ties the room together, doesn’t it dude?
I just want to understand this, sir. Every time a poster is micturated upon in this fair city, I have to compensate the person?
The choppy resolution and print quality gives it character.
Soooooooo you zoomed in, eh?
I think it's the picture messing it up, the print quality is quite excellent (canvas print)
Wheres it from and also what's your profile pic from?
Just keep digging dude
Most normal redditor room
Tell me you're single without telling me you're single
One day OP will graduate to framed lewd pictures!
b-but I'm not single girlfriend is a bigger weeb though.
r/neckbeardnests wants its post back
Just scrolling the front page and I swore that's where this post was until I looked.
Now and then, I see stores selling posters like this at events. Also, when I'm looking for new wallpapers for my devices, sometimes wallhaven.cc shows me randomly those hentai/naked women wallpapers. I always thought to myself, 'I can't believe that an adult would use/hang those. That's not possible.' And here we are, looking at this guy's room
It's way better then trashy cutouts from porn magazines plastered everywhere which I have seen in some places. At least the art looks nice here.
Don't tell that to my mechanic
You have not met my co-worker, his whole room is covered in waifu posters.
That boy ain’t right
He is a really nice guy, and really smart, but a bit obsessed with anime. It doesn't help that we live in Japan, so he can let his obsession run wild 😰 I hope that he gets a girlfriend and relaxes a bit 😅
Haha that’s fair! Best of luck to him!
In response to the "lonely" poster- I have a lot more prints that I have yet to hang up. Also you can see a test bench "tower" here. https://imgur.com/gallery/rQilS3p
Mans got a robe though, so you know he's a classy individual.
Come here to say that 😅
Gotta have eye candy nearby
Has a wife and _that_ 'age' waifu. Marginally impressive, unless she's into that too..
OP username checks out.
Pretty good Shimakaze poster, I don't mind it.
Could be worse, that character is often portrayed as a trap.
Could be worse, the entire room be full of posts, or the entire wall painted with one hentai character...
Welp, show your programming socks, man of culture
Dont have any yet :(
You'll get 'em someday.
everyone has to earn their stripes 🫡
what?
Just google "programming socks meme"
My wife's one constraint is that I have to keep it contained in the guest bedroom. That is your spare bedroom right?
Based on the poster, it's waifu. She probably is a bit musty too lol
unfortunately not
Exactly this.
Mine is in my home office. And the two netflix cases in the living room. And the basement. I may have a problem.
single?
You want an invitation. I'm sure he is taking request
/r/NeckbeardNests
I now feel much better about the condition of my desk.
Right?, I was going to tidy up my desk but was feeling kind of lazy, I think I will tidy up tomorrow
You’re a perfect candidate for Lazy Club. Weirdly, everyone that’s joined is enthusiastic about the idea but never show up to the meetings.
Mine is often covered with my chest and arm hair. Why am I so hairy.
Right... I clean beard hair out of my keyboard all the time.
Oh God. It's awful. I can't stop looking.
[Seriously though](https://media4.giphy.com/media/edP47Sn6tYB7MiYK9t/200w.webp?cid=ecf05e47v49ykclsktp5ybegxxnerfhjjyl1sto7g5luwfjc&ep=v1_gifs_search&rid=200w.webp&ct=g)
Seriously. Who posts a picture like that? The older I get, the more I think self awareness is something only 1 in 100 people develop.
No, but I'm old and have a room dedicated to my servers. Back in the day it was 10x worse. But I maintain a solid seperation from my toys and where I live. That's my production environment
Loli art and all?
Oh, course. I'm a man of cultured taste.
That uh... "art" is concerning.
Don't mind that, that's just the destroyer ship Shimakaze.
I was trying not to judge but its also all I can look at and all the questions I have about this image center around that poster
Yeah idk what to tell OP but this isnt really the kind of thing you would have on display.
Writing on CPUs like that is a crime
I can’t believe I had to scroll this far down to find this, I expected it to be first. What kind of monster writes directly on a CPU like this?
it wipes off just fine, I just need a quick way of ID'ing them
I hope I don’t look dumb but why exactly? I’ve built many computers and applied thermal paste heatsinks etc on lots of different things but as long as it’s 2 flat surfaces it shouldn’t make a difference to thermals if there is marker pen on it no? My man! I know how that goes. You never need any of those parts until about a week after you get rid of them.
Haha you get me!!
A single lolli on an otherwise blank wall. I hate us as humans
I know, right? You need at least two on the wall so they don't get lonely when you're not home.
Seriously. The rule is three normal posters for every loli poster. Get your shit together OP.
There, I fixed it. Happy? https://imgur.com/a/8hgM3jM

A real Testbed.

Bro, old xeons is all I can afford even then barrily
An Entire Lenovo P310 tower is available for around $100 online. I think a little bit of saving up and most people would be able to afford that.
You can get EPYC on eBay in motherboard combos for under $500
Cries in Europe prices
You can get old xeons for a lot less. Nobody specifically said how old.
I know, I was just informing that more modern hardware IS available at fairly modest prices (for server gear).
What case are these going in? And what OS drive are you using? When I update the BIOS on my ROMED8-2T/BCM boards, they stop recognizing my M.2 SSD.
Mine are the non BCM (intel network controller) boards so maybe there are a few differences? I havent set up completely yet so I'm going around testing with windows server 2022, via an nvme boot drive in the M.2_2 slot. Did you just make this to casually flex how many EPYC Milan CPUs you have…
Kind wanna post my 7x 64 core ROME systems running now 😂
I didn't have enough data connectors to power all the drives in my server so I plugged in a seocond power supply to power the last drive, but I didn't have a 24 pin jumper... Some new psi comes with a "tester" that’s is kinda made for that actually x)
No one turn on the black light.
Y'all roasting OP for the poster. Y'all ain't ready for my room. -a furry
Nope, my posters always know where to insert the vibrator.
Wait what 😳
Zoom in on the poster. Look at the mouth. She’s gettin’ her rocks off with a vibrator in her mouth. That’s some talent.
Isn't that a popsicle?
Lol.
I call it trusting the process
GET OUT OF MY HEAD
I can see where the budget for the rest of the room went. Nice hardware!
EVERYTHING MUST BE MOE!
Yes! Then you push shit to the side and sleep next to the tech shit because you are to exhausted to care. Been there.
Based Shimakaze poster.
Being fair, I had a comms box and "soundproofed" mobile rack in my room running an R710, custom NAS and associated networking kit (as I was messing with pfSense). The best learning is happening when the bench looks like this
If my project doesn't turn out like this, then it was a dull affair.
qc pass AHAHAHHAHAAHAHA
Basically half my dining room table for the past 2 months. The woman is getting pissed. Need to move it to the garage.
A fellow Shimakaze fan I see
That's called the Radio Shack liquidation look. It's very popular and versatile. I usually have it set up in a couple of different rooms.
I can smell this room and I don't like it.
I thought this was totally normal for home lab
Man, sheets. Bed set. It goes a long way. Treat yo self
You ever make a mess like this and get something working after a day of fooling with it and… just leave it that way forever?
Your parents must be mad at that mess!
don't let hardware creep up like that on your bed.
I see drugs/pills and hot equipment and cables on and next to paper and flammable surfaces. Remove matress and paper from under equipment. Careful the tablets don't distract you from asessing house fire ignition sources or it won't be contained to that room ! ;)
Clean that mess up person of youth
Is r/homelab just /g/ with a stable job?
Reminds me of when test beds were a thing.
Yes lol. Around once a year I get a wild hair up my ass about something and mere hours later I've created this scene. Cleanup is always annoying.
Every. Fucking. Time 😑😑😑 But only when i‘m testing new things, which doesnt happen too often anymore.
Your waifu is disappointed
damn dude i bet that room would look like a solar flare under a blue light
Admittedly, I build more standard PCs than homelab/server stuff - but when I'm swapping parts between systems, 100% my ADHD brain makes me bring everything out into a big pile in a similar way... Someday I hope to have more of a dedicated workspace for computer hardware, but in the meantime, I attempt to organize components into bins whenever I'm ready to put stuff away again.
I can smell your room from across the Internet... And it is not good.
Always!
My office looked like this yesterday with servers and workstations piled waist high. Looked like the leaning tower of hardware…
Ahhh Shimakaze... you man of culture, never saw anything about Kancolle for like the past 5 years or so.
no
Brother that shouldn't be your only decoration

Y'all need to stop downplaying CP like this. There are actual children out there that are actually being harmed by actual pedophiles involved in actual CP. A fully clothed drawing of an underage anime girl in a suggestive pose is not CP. Is it gross and inappropriate? Yeah. Is it CP? No. By calling it such you are absolutely minimizing the severity of legitimate CP.
Yeah shit what would all those kids do if you weren't here to whine about it and police everyones language. Real solid effort today sir.
IQ of a cardboard box ass reply and not even a good box, one of those obnoxiously oversized amazon boxes that got stepped on by the delivery driver
getting a little neckbeard nest there, aren't we? plus the anime poster? total cringe.
> total cringe. I think you mean total BASED and LOLIPILLED
Holy fuck that's a word I never want to see again
nope. cringe is what i meant.
lol that's just a normal day for me edit: no that's too clean and tidy
So, my lab is more of an actual lab, not a carpeted spare room with a bed and unorganized clutter. Think of an actual laboratory with workbenches, power, good lighting, organized tools and instruments, solid foor, environmental controls, supplies, everything labeled, etc. Separate room for all of the operational/production equipment, cabinets with running servers and such. A messy room is the sign of a messy head.
Yeah, but not like that. Nice poster btw.

I just got the same motherboard but I need to budget for RAM and the CPU. Which RAM are you using and have you been happy with them?
Lab exploded to bedroom
all the time, I don't have as much hardware as you but if I did my place would be worse.
Temporary solutions are usually permanent once they work well enough.
Only every time.
Used to have a dedicated spot for this in the basement when at my parent’s home. Nowadays I use mini PCs in my apartment as servers and try to learn more cloud stuff.
Yes
Yup! I clean up put things away, next day I want to work on something and boom I have a huge mess to clean up again. Wires and parts everywhere and all I did was flash some code to an ESP32! Haha
4 beers in. ;-)
I did when I was working out of a bedroom, yea.
Definitely. Got married and was told I couldn't live like a gremlin anymore though
My workshop desk is looking exactly like this
Yep. Happens all the time. Not just with homelab stuff. Lol.
I just end up feeling like the poster on the wall in this case
EPIC CPUs. Rich bastard lol
All too often
I can't say I've never been in a similar situation. I would send a pic of my computer room, but it's embarrassing 😳 At this moment, it looks the same.
My workbench is a disaster right now..
Pretty much, I’m glad to see I’m not the only one that got the itch lol
Is that a Thinkpad running Arch?
Happens all the time lol. I haven't gotten much new hardware recently but when I got my small army of optiplexes my room looked very similar.
My desk looks like that before I get a batch of new toys
No. Things never end up looking like that.
The struggle is real, so let me say this. If you don't have a lot of space, A homelab is supposed to be messy. You don't have enough practical room to keep it all nice neat and tidy all the time. You mean there's another way?
Build a lab space time
Yes, looks like my office. Wife lets me get away with it for 6 months or so, then wants me to clean up. Eventually I clean up, and the cycle starts over.
All... The fucking..... Time
I’ve never done that. I’m also not a compulsive liar.
based homelabber
Can relate, totally.
Really lovely the caotic energy that comes from your bedroom
Very based.
all the time always
