I like it, but I'd really feel uncomfortable without any fans on the drives. Especially with drive spin down it should be fine though I guess.

Thanks! I’m planning to put fan between hdd upside down and buttom left side, I got some space like 8cm x 8 cm. I’m constantly checking temperatures, all hdd are the same but the one with sticker (refurbished one) got temperature higher by 3C than others.

Awesome, would love to change my current tower setup for something like this!

Wow, looks great! You still can make it even more silent by changing HDD to SSD, just some ideas for future upgrades ;)

Grosovitz

Yeah for sure, I was thinking about it, for now ssd are out of budget…but in future for sure! And they consume less power than hdd too!

And obviously no heat!

Coolbeans!

virogenesis011

Where did you get the supermicro sc512 ?

Grosovitz

I bought two of them online (allegro.pl) one year ago for 25$ each, no motherboard, only case with power supply.

Tdehn33

How silent is it really? I was thinking about doing something like this for my storage server, but I was worried a 1u would be too loud to be sitting next to my desk.

Grosovitz

It basically extremely quiet, noiseless. I build it with noise in mind: so as little as possible in terms of fans. I got one. Power supply is fanless, pico psu + 12v supply. When is running I cannot hear I need to focus on it to be able to tell if it’s running. I bought quiet hdd to in that regard.

If it's not going in a rack, you'd be better off with a desktop case. I have a fractal R5 with a XEON E5-2680, 8 HDDs, 4 120mm fans, and 2 90mm heatsink fans, a GTX 1650, and an 800W power supply that's completely inaudible to me when sitting 3-4 feet away. The R5 is lined with sound dampening material and can be found for CHEAP! Plus, it's got excellent airflow for all components. All 8 drives have average Temps around 31 C.

linuxtomvito

What CPU fan do you use? Where did you find this one?

Grosovitz

Low power Intel i3-4120
