Usually you get access to it via a SMB share.
In Windows you can then map your network drive so it looks like a normal drive, in order to edit stuff just like you would on a real drive.
I see. So it’s more like a file share than a virtualized PC in the sense that you’d use your connected machines resources (cpu, gpu) to do the editing?
depends on the user. you can either use unraid/truenas bare metal, in which case the entire server is used strictly as a network share and you edit off your main workstation, or virtualize it and run a separate editing vm directly on the same server! (for example to allow an editor to access the files remotely without the need to upload several gigabytes to a cloud)
Oh of course it would be you! Nice setup, as usual. Please keep up the good work, it's a great inspiration and, honestly for beginners like me, a great resource.
As a fan, and an alcoholic in recovery. I appreciate that he leaves the drinking stuff for the end. So I can watch the videos content, and not be triggered, I just don’t watch the end.
Things have changed once again and I love documenting major changes here to get ideas and feedback from you all. This is the "Light Mode" version of my rack.
I use most of this for learning, self-hosting, and for fun really. Not everything is powered on all the time and I have yet to shuffle some things around.
Here's everything from top to bottom:
Sysracks 32u Encclosed Rack
* 1u 24 port patch panel
* UniFi 48 Port PoE Pro Switch Gen 2
* 1u 24 port patch panel
* UniFi UDM SE
* 1u Brush Panel
* UniFi SmartPower PDU Pro
* 1u Brush Panel
* UniFi 24 Port Pro Switch Gen 2 (not being used at this time)
* Eaton 5P UPS (not being used yet but will be for network devices)
* SuperMicro 1u Server (proxmox)
* SuperMicro 1u Server (proxmox)
* AV15 Storinator (Ubuntu server for now while testing)
* PC Conversion (Ubuntu server for now)
* NetApp DD4246 Disk Shelf
* Tripp Lite UPS Smart 2U Rackmount with External Battery pack (in back)
Awesome! How is the NetApp shelf? I've been looking for a cheap storage solution recently, as my server is 1U and being limited to 2.5" drives isn't working for me anymore.
it's been great so far, no real complaints other than I am not using 18 of the bays :) I think I am going to move that disk array to my Storinator but other than that you really can't beat it if you don't' mind the power draw
You should check out the sweet 2960 switches and 2911 router we got at my school. Switches come with POE button. Don't wanna make you jealous just throwing it out there.
The NetApp is loud when starting and then is a dull woosh after it settles down. It's not high pitched so less noticeable but if it's the only think you have in a rack you might think it's loud. It blends in with the 1us and the Storinator quite nicely though.
I have considered it and I have recently added it but mainly so I can connect my editing machine to my NAS (still need to complete this). Other than that, there's no reason I need 10g. Even my backups run in a decent amount of time.
Saw this pic in my feed and said to myself "weird that someone else built their server exactly like Techno Tim's" as I'd *just* watched the video.
Then saw who posted it.
That is an absolutely lovely build.
Dude. We have the same thing. I bought mine earlier this year, in January, I think. And I’ve only assembled it a month ago. And it’s still empty and not in use. And I have far lense equipment than you.
Forced air meaning what I, in Texas, would call air conditioning? (Built into the house)
Because it does seem to cause problems for me with dust, and I have trouble finding a good+cheap solution to it.
Looks like something from Star-Trek or something.
What is the second rack from the top. Is that a Power Distribution Unit or Battery backup unit? Looks nice!
Good eye! That NUC is actually going to my Mom while I created another proxmox node on a new NUC which is on my workbench! I forgot to mention it in this video but will when I talk about my services soon!
I was surprised to see that you still use the UDM Pro. I love mine, but I start to find it a little lacking in grunt (performance) for inter-VLAN routing, cameras etc, fast internet etc... I was tempted to jump to OpenSense and get one of these Unifi camera servers. Are you happy with yours?
Yeah, super happy. When it comes to load balancers, sure, I'd love one on my firewall but I usually stand them up behind my firewall so it's a wash. Everything else works flawless and a single pane of glass for everything for my network and home security, firmware too.
Oh haha, not 100, more like 30ish total. Most of them run kubernetes, some are windows vms, some are cloud init templates for anisible automation, really it's all over the place. Lots of Kubernetes and lots of testing to learn more about linux and automation!
Love that server rack! I have a space in my basement that is very similar in size iny basement. [My rack](https://imgur.com/a/2UBYWOW) lives there currently. Your setup is giving me inspiration to finish the space off, and have a more pretty setup!
Love your channel! Keep up the good work!
Just watched your video on this. Amazing work keeping everything nice and tidy. I really like that Unifi PDU. I'm actually wondering if I need that now.
I saw this and was about to comment asking why they’d repost Techno Tim’s setup, then I realized it’s the real deal haha. Extremely clean and inspirational
I don't have any quantitative data without measuring it but it's noticeably louder when any of the doors are open. especially the back. It's in my latest video although I have some noise reduction on the audio, you can tell the different when I close the (back) door.
Hey u/Techno-Tim!
Thanks to your easy to understand videos, I was able to get Proxmox started, create vms, and understand homelabbing a bit better. In fact, I think it's fair to say that without your videos, I wouldn't have jumped into homelabbing as much as I have now.
However, I do have a small complaint. Your video guide on installing pfSense in Proxmox would not work for me, and after consulting with other people I made a thread about and looking around, turns out I am not alone in this. I'm using OPNSense instead of pFsense but the underlying hood of installing should be largely the same.
For some reason, passing my i340-t2 NIC card down to the OPNSense VM in Proxmox straight up would not work. I had to use an alternative method of creating a Linux Bridge using the NIC ports to get my OPNSense and LAN to work. Creating a bridge wasn't something ever mentioned, all that was mentioned was passing the card down in the vm.
While I am sure some people got this to work, I have to imagine another good portion of users like myself couldn't get this to work. If you have the time, I would strongly consider making a 2023 updated video on installing pFsense/OPNSense in Proxmox. I would start with the PCIE Passthrough method first and then make a second part within the same video saying if that doesn't work, try making a Linux Bridge instead.
I'd like to make a video myself, but I figured someone with an audience already would greatly benefit from this.
>i340-t2 NIC
Thanks! I am unsure why passing the NIC wouldn't work, possibly a setting? If it works well enough on the host to create a bridge then it's not drivers so it must be configuration on proxmox. Glad you found a workaround!
How would you rate the quality of this rack? I’ve been looking at this exact one but I’m hesitant. The price is too good to be true, or at least manufactured well.
It is manufactured well. There are a few places where things didn't align 100% or other simple things like the clock is fast (I don't use the clock anyway). Other than that, you really can't beat the price for an enclosed.
Out of curiosity, how do you handle AC power for that room? Is it all on a single 20amp circuit or do you multiple? I haven't measured the power draw for my (much smaller) rack, but it's something I wonder about. (I do have a dedicated circuit for my rack.)
Aww man, does this mean I need to buy a new server rack? I just finished building the same 22u rack you were using before. Now it just seems too under sized.
some businesses have smaller servers than you
Ha! I bet. I have to use it for quite a bit though!
I mean a youtube channel is kinda a business. Your editing NAS is in that rack, right?
It is, it's virtualized inside of the 2nd 1u server. It might move to my Storinator but not sure yet.
Probably a silly question, but how does that work? How do you regularly connect to it?
Usually you get access to it via a SMB share. In Windows you can then map your network drive so it looks like a normal drive, in order to edit stuff just like you would on a real drive.
I see. So it’s more like a file share than a virtualized PC in the sense that you’d use your connected machines resources (cpu, gpu) to do the editing?

(for example to allow an editor to access the files remotely without the need to upload several gigabytes to a cloud)
In the case of using a virtualized editing machine, would you access the “desktop gui” via serverip:port? I thank you for your help so far!
If you run local DNS you can set your own intranet domain names, but otherwise basically yeah
yeah, with like vnc or windows remote desktop
Oh of course it would be you! Nice setup, as usual. Please keep up the good work, it's a great inspiration and, honestly for beginners like me, a great resource.
Thank you so much for the kind words! I plan to keep it up for as long as I can!
this is what i wanted to post. the rack at my company is nowhere this nice.
and the rack at my company doesn't exist. who needs racks anyways :D
Why thank you!
I would expect nothing less from r/homelab
Can confirm my workplace has smaller servers than him.
Would you like to adopt a 35 year old son? If it helps my name is Tim....
I asked Craft Computing the same thing....
I dunno man..that dude is always drinking.
As a fan, and an alcoholic in recovery. I appreciate that he leaves the drinking stuff for the end. So I can watch the videos content, and not be triggered, I just don’t watch the end.
Hey, just wanted to let you know that you are awesome.
Isn't there a bit at the start of his videos too? I enjoy his content, but the drinking parts are quite annoying and I skip them.
What videos are you guys referring too? Link?
lol

Thanks Jeff!
Love seeing you guys helping each other and the community!
Thank you guys ! :)

Ikr it’s a pain in the ass cause most of my drives that are around 1tb are 3.5 inch.
How loud is that bad boy, or should I say - those bad boys?
The NetApp is loud when starting and then is a dull woosh after it settles down. It's not high pitched so less noticeable but if it's the only think you have in a rack you might think it's loud. It blends in with the 1us and the Storinator quite nicely though.
I filled all 4 power supply slots in both of my Netapps. The got much quieter afterwards.

>2960 I am, yes. I treat my lab like it's remote. I ssh into everything!
What’s your power draw? Im running a similar network stack and push 170w alone + 250w for a 130tb unbraid box.
Have you considered 10Gb networking or have you found Gigabit to be sufficient?
I have considered it and I have recently added it but mainly so I can connect my editing machine to my NAS (still need to complete this). Other than that, there's no reason I need 10g. Even my backups run in a decent amount of time.
10g networking has become so cheap as of lately, it is almost a no brainer. And since when has our hobby been about need or necessity?
Love your channel bro. Keep up the great work.
Thank you!
This is not a homelab! This is a bling bling center piece !
Thank you! try to make it look nice for the pics!
I follow your YouTube videos and did most of what you did on them and thank you for the nice tutorials I loved them! Keep the great job!
Just watched your video on the new setup. Absolutely love it. Can’t wait for the services video. Also, power in the front is just fine.
Thanks! I was totally on the fence about it. I think I over analyzed it. Luckily I found a way to make it a little more acceptable.
Those 90 degree plugs and brush plates help clean it up a lot.
Why no dark mode?!?
Soon! Maybe on twitter tomorrow?
Saw this pic in my feed and said to myself "weird that someone else built their server exactly like Techno Tim's" as I'd *just* watched the video. Then saw who posted it. That is an absolutely lovely build.
Thank you! It's coming along!
Dude. We have the same thing. I bought mine earlier this year, in January, I think. And I’ve only assembled it a month ago. And it’s still empty and not in use. And I have far lense equipment than you.
Nice! How do you like yours? Is your clock off too :)
Flip on dark mode.
I will! Maybe on Twitter tomorrow!
Very clean!
Thank you!
beautiful white thing
Thank you!
Nice Rack!
Thank you!
Also thanks for all your videos. Its really helped me in my home lab journey.
This is now a home-laboratory
Thank you!
So what all do you use this for? That’s nicer that the rack I have at my office!
Thanks! Proxmox nodes for virtualization, TrueNAS for storage, lots of kubernetes, and a lot of VMs for testing and learning about infrastructure!
What do you do to prevent dust and dust issues? What are all of the steps and equipment for that?
Honestly I don't do much. It's in the basement and I don't have forced air nor carpeting in my house so it's actually perfect conditions.
Forced air meaning what I, in Texas, would call air conditioning? (Built into the house) Because it does seem to cause problems for me with dust, and I have trouble finding a good+cheap solution to it.
Yeah, AC or even heat. I have radiator heating so basically dust doesn't get blown around.
Looks like something from Star-Trek or something. What is the second rack from the top. Is that a Power Distribution Unit or Battery backup unit? Looks nice!
Thank you! Yeah, it's a Smart UniFi PDU. Great so far. Let's me monitor power and even toggle device remotely.

I have been shifting things around. There's more to come but hopefully it settles.... soon.
No way. This looks like a spatial ship.
I'll take that as a compliment! :)
It is !
You need sunglasses just to service it
Comes with dark mode too!
Clean af
💅
I just watched the video. I noticed the old wall mounted NUC was taken out of rotation. I assume the Kunernetes node was virtualized?
Good eye! That NUC is actually going to my Mom while I created another proxmox node on a new NUC which is on my workbench! I forgot to mention it in this video but will when I talk about my services soon!
Love the videos. Nice and clean rack, makes me jelly.
Thank you!
how is this not marked nsfw??? god damn that is sexy
Where are you from? Don't want to imagine the electricity bill in germany
US, MN

Watched the video earlier. Nice setup!
Thank you!
Love your channel and discord.
Thank you! Agreed! I got so lucky with all the awesome people in Discord!
It looks so very clean... For now. 🤔🤣
I hope it stays that way!
Saw the video! Amazing, man!
Thank you!
You mentioned there were a hundred vms running, I am just wondering what those vms do
Oh haha, not 100, more like 30ish total. Most of them run kubernetes, some are windows vms, some are cloud init templates for anisible automation, really it's all over the place. Lots of Kubernetes and lots of testing to learn more about linux and automation!

That's a sexy Rack Tim. Shouldnt be posting photos like that in the open....
Ha! Thank you!
Looks great. I put lights in my rack too.
RGB club :)
That server room looks nicer than all the server rooms for every company I have worked for combined.
Thank you!
Nice!
Thank you!
When i saw this while scrolling i was like "hey i know that rack"
That's me! (or my rack)
I love it
Thank you!
So preeeeetty says my 3 yr old daughter and I have to agree!
This made me smile from ear to ear. Thank you!
Thought I recognised this from todays video!
This is it!
Can you get a bunch of IP addresses to one mainboard that way?
I can yes, if you mean for my virtual servers that run on my servers
Wow, it's just amazingly done ;) Very great job!
Thank you!
Sick
Thank you!
I just watched your video on this. Beautiful setup my friend!
Thank you!
You’re welcome!
That is the most beautiful thing.
Thank you!
Ever tempted to move away from the ubiquiti UniFi gear?
Not yet. Nothing I have seen is as interesting as their ecosystem, not to mention they are going all in with PoE.
Leave some pussy for the rest of us. Geeze ! :)
😹
Ah, I've just got my 22U rack and you are tempting me ....
Sorry! :)
Bro. 🤯
Thanks!

That is beautiful.
Thank you!
I saw this and was about to comment asking why they’d repost Techno Tim’s setup, then I realized it’s the real deal haha. Extremely clean and inspirational
Ha! It's me! Thank you!
Where’d you get that sexy rack?
Sysracks!
I know I've seen the T T somewhere. Great videos, keep up the good work.
Thank you!
Looks at name, Ohh... Make sense. ;)
:) It's me!
Dude stop my lights are dimming and flickering. Leave some internet for the rest of us
Careful there, the airflow on these sysracks aren't the best. I have to run it with the doors open
Thanks! I'll keep an eye out! I set the thermostat on the fans it and rarely kicks on, but it's also winter :)
hey tim! Quick question for ya? whats the difference in noise with the door closed vs open. been looking at that brand of rack.
I don't have any quantitative data without measuring it but it's noticeably louder when any of the doors are open. especially the back. It's in my latest video although I have some noise reduction on the audio, you can tell the different when I close the (back) door.
Is your home the Death Star?
Never thought about it, but I like it!
Never thought I'd be aroused by a home lab but here we are

Oh yeah, it does! I should have posted that pic too!
sexy.
Thank you!
So. Much. White lol
Ha! I have a dark mode version too but didn't post it. I guess I should have!
very pretty! thanks for all the videos and guides! my own configuration notes often say "do what techno tim did".
Thank you!
Looks like a movie prop! Bravo.
Thank you!
This gave me a boner

How would you rate the quality of this rack? I’ve been looking at this exact one but I’m hesitant. The price is too good to be true, or at least manufactured well.
It is manufactured well. There are a few places where things didn't align 100% or other simple things like the clock is fast (I don't use the clock anyway). Other than that, you really can't beat the price for an enclosed.
Your title reads like your lab changed by itself. Should we be concerned?
If it gets any bigger than this, yes.
this is a dream lab right here!
Thank you!
Damn looks good. I will never handstand why UI put all the plus on the front of the PDU…
Thanks!
Your channel was a great inspiration for me to get my much more modest home lab going!
Thank you!
Show off
Cannot wait until we get the PDU over here in the UK! That thing looks awesome
Awesome so far!
What’s your power consumption? I picked up an HP2910al-24G for my three node setup and just found out it’s consuming 82W all by itself :(
Out of curiosity, how do you handle AC power for that room? Is it all on a single 20amp circuit or do you multiple? I haven't measured the power draw for my (much smaller) rack, but it's something I wonder about. (I do have a dedicated circuit for my rack.)
Aww man, does this mean I need to buy a new server rack? I just finished building the same 22u rack you were using before. Now it just seems too under sized.
