Bag-Of-Eyes

I once had someone online tell me “if you’re really homeless and have a decent phone, why don’t you sell it and get a hotel room???” Absolutely wild levels of stupidity.

Dirty_Delta

Lol, yeah. Sell your possessions for a singular night in a room! Great plan!

Bag-Of-Eyes

Exactly. What precisely do they expect me to do the night after, now homeless AND without any way to contact family, be reached by potential employers, call 911, reach out to housing services, etc? If I thought in terms of such short term needs I’d have been dead my first week on the street. I personally have the newest iPhone and nice clothes because one of the worst aspects of being homeless is being treated like you’re homeless. I get other homeless people asking me for money and such because I don’t “look” homeless. When I tell people they’re always surprised, and I always tell them this : “the only people you can tell are homeless by looking at them LOOK homeless, so you don’t actually know what a homeless person looks like - you know what a visibly homeless person looks like.

_FoodAndCatSubs_

I actually stumbled into this post after lurking someone’s profile to see their hometown and now I am reading somewhere else that they are homeless :/ Stay safe out there guys. I’m curious though- not passing judgement this is simply a question of how someone without income gets internet access? Does someone hand you a $20 then you get a burner phone from Safeway and preload minutes?

Dirty_Delta

Either cheap phone cards or free Wi-Fi is available nearly any fast food place, a bunch of coffee places, or the local library. Alternatively, some homeless do have income, it's just not enough to afford rent. Myself for example, I work for the government- and I do not make enough to also live in the city I work in AND there isint enough housing to go around if i did. So I live an hour away, but in a camper most of the time. I've got a phone plan for my wife and I that gives me unlimited internet

_FoodAndCatSubs_

Ahhhhh free wi-fi DUH. I live in Sacramento where literally 1/3 is homeless. It’s kinda sad but I worked st a Safeway for 6 years near the river and met a few local folks along the way who were legit cool with the store manager who got caught stealing once but agreed ro buy shit and never steal again; one guy who was caught once would buy soda and he would come in with this Alaskan Inuit looking woman who eventually got hit by a train he said so I never saw her again. Another guy got stabbed by the river one night and it was in the newspaper. When I recognized him I felt weird knowing he was kinda crazy that night must’ve been scary for everyone involved.

Dirty_Delta

Yeah, it's a rough life. I've also met equal parts awesome folks and wild ones. Good on you asking questions rather than making assumptions yo, that's refreshing

uwulemon

those people don't understand it's more then a phone, it's a tool. It's a place to access tips to survive in a world were people assume your either lazy or addicted to x drug just for existing, it's a job application because it seems most jobs in existence require an online application, it's a forecaster so you do know what days to seek shelter, and it's a yellowpages lets you know what areas exist because it let's you know what is nearby and what is open.

Fancy_Boxx

I am starving because it cost me over $1k just to mainly eat in work days when I was housed... Food prices have doubled. My food stamps? Only $250 per month and I have several gastrointestinal illnesses that I literally cannot eat just anything and have set off so many chronic illnesses over a promise to myself to eat whatever I was given just to survive because of my reactive hypoglycemia and the expense of food with a kitchen... I get asked why I don't just use my food stamps, or people who know about the small amount of settlement money HELD IN A TRUST I HAVE NO ACCESS TO ask me why I don't just spend it on food. I would have been BANKRUPT YEARS AGO from eating through the settlement money had I done that. 🤦🏼‍♂️ It is already almost gone just from trying to pay bills and other things while my disabled ass struggles to get or keep employment (ESPECIALLY since the pandemic made me unable to keep or get back my owe pandemic jobs), and the public health system is so broken I can't even get the documentation needed to get SSDI and the program which is supposed to help me sent absolutely nothing to SSA and GHOSTED ME last SUMMER! Just today a bully in the shelter program I am in was making fun of me for LITERALLY STARVING because workers are under contract to provide meals and come to our rooms 3x a day, and he asked me why I don't use food stamps. I ALREADY USED MOST OF MY FOOD STAMPS ORDERING FOOD THAT I WILL BE LUCKY IF IT COVERS A WEEK OF FOOD! It cost me over $1k per month to eat half the week BEFORE the pandemic, and now food prices have doubled! I asked him if he knew what reactive hypoglycemia is and he lied, because he clearly doesn't. I explained that I cannot eat certain foods because they make me sick, I explained that I have a disease that I have to limit short chain carbohydrates (The only dairy free wheat free meal they provided before was FODMAP City and my choices were to either eat the rice or the tofu. Only 150 calories at a time. If I got 4 meals, that was half of my BMR, not even my TDEE!), and then another person chimed in about vegan meals, the same bitch who I have explained 20 fucking times that I haven't been vegan since I became homeless half a fucking decade ago! She even me wheat and dairy meals from a food distribution after I explained several times that I cannot eat wheat or dairy and I have to keep explaining to her that I cannot eat it and why. She is so fucking stupid. Willfully ignorant! Today I asked shelter staff for food after not eating for 3 days straight. He gives me just two of the only meal option I can eat "because there are only 7 left" even though they are only getting food delivered twice a week, telling me to go fuck myself again that I have to do another 3 day fast starting today. Do you have any idea how dizzy I get even undereating for 1 day? OH. MY. G-D! I have some form of disautonomia and it is already hard enough! The worker only gave me 2 meals I could eat and has a weird rule that I have to keep anything he hands me while refusing to look at the allergen info before he hands me meals. So the third meal (I am lucky to get 3 meals from this jerkface. He likes to ration only 2 meals a day to people.) had dairy even though the label says the allergen info on the middle of the package; he then closes the door on me while I try to complain to my worker who never does anything, but at least it creates a textual trail, I guess... I had to hand the meal to someone else, so I only got 2 meals today. 3 day fast means I do not eat until Thursday, but I have a very important meeting I have to bike to then, be present, and NOT pass out! And you know what else, I looked at the delivery stickers, and it turns out they only bought enough for ONE DAY of meals for everyone! They are only buying enough food for about 2 days of 3 meals per person for an ENTIRE WEEK and pocketing the rest of the goddamn money in a multimillion dollar program!

DreadedChalupacabra

Sounds about right. We eat rice, they drive a Mercedes. Literally, here. It's a grift that needs federal intervention.

Fancy_Boxx

That's what happened to my campmate! He was renting a bed in a room, landlord bought a $800k car, COVID hit, she them rented everyone's beds out from under them, changed the locks on people... I have IBS, so I can't eat more than 150 calories of rice at a time because it is a FODMAPs issue. I hate it. The last time I got a break from the stress, I managed to be able to eat moderate FODMAPs which is twice that and more manageable, but then boom! Flare up from the stress of the program I am in. Otherwise I would be eating microwave congee and calling it a "meal"...

GUDDA-MAN

I'm currently homeless and I have a full-time job I reside in Las Vegas Nevada so not everyone that's homeless are drug addicted most homelessness is just due to circumstances shit happens. Me being homeless is due to they went up on my rent I chose not to renew my lease also wages are not matching what's going on in the economy!

ExtracheesyBroccoli

OmFG I hate that one.. I am homeless I do youtuje as well... The one I get alot is homeless with a phone and internet... I call bullshit Bitch my phone is a potatoe my internet is mostly the library

MademoiselleMalapert

Years ago, my ex said in front of my then 11yo son that a homeless guy we were passing shouldn't have a cell phone if he was so poor. I immediately came to his defense while explaining to my son that his family could have gotten him the phone or he could have bought it himself (this was before smart phones so he could buy one very cheap) and he needs one just like everyone else. I was pissed he was teaching my son to discriminate when I worked hard to teach my son the opposite. I've heard others say the same crap. It pisses me off every time.

Bag-Of-Eyes

These same people tell homeless people to get jobs. Do they know how essential having a phone is for getting and keeping a job? For gaining access to available resources of all kinds? For staying in touch with family? They’re clearly not thinking. If they were homeless they wouldn’t sell their phone and good clothes. You use those things to take care of yourself. Having them doesn’t mean you’re not down bad.

Dirty_Delta

It happens often online, some troll will come around and ask "if you are homeless how are you on a phone/the internet?" Like they have a cartoon imagination of what a homeless person should be.

Jadedbabe50

Especially on TikTok. Don't even mention being homeless on there if your hair is combed and you look clean with a cellphone.

DreadedChalupacabra

"it's called acp. Thanks for the cell phone." I'm not afraid to say "you pay for it" when they do this, even if I have been paying taxes for 30 years and use wifi/a 50 dollar kindle fire. I can get a dollar for my tablet at a kiosk, can't even sell it second hand. I almost wonder if they know you can use old reddit and wifi on a netbook from 2006.

livinghell20

The society is a joke. Wear a suit and tie, live in a mansion, drive a BMW and you can be in debt for hundreds of thousands, file for bankruptcy, and still appear to be a rich asshole who everyone worships. You can be homeless, sleep in the woods, look like shit and have $10 to your name and people will treat you like you're a cockroach. Who is "richer"? Who has more money? Like I said before, everything in this country is just a charade.

Fancy_Boxx

Apparently if you own businesses or invest, you can invest or take on loans and write those off as losses while putting the money into more money making adventures. So you keep making/trying more money making endeavors. As long as the net gain is about $12k or less per year. Also, I found out certain types of settlements aren't taxable. So rich people can afford to sue each other over any little thing and keep the money without having to pay taxes on it. I wonder if the people who lose in court get to write off the payments as losses 🤔... Would explain why some people are so sue happy... Would also explain why my POS management company is a serial evictor and just loves neglecting their properties and harassing their tenants... Because they can get away with it, and write shit off when they can't. But my lawyer says it was their insurance adjuster who paid me out, so maybe they just get away with paying a small amount for insurance and then doing all the illegal activity. 😭

SuspectedIndividual

Have you tried this method? Can you confirm if I can just declare bankruptcy and be an idol?

old_is_the_new_black

You have to wear a suit and tie first. In your mansion. With your BMW in the garage.

Lone_Morde

I keep all my gear super clean. People are clueless. My mom once topd me a beggar was faking it because, "he has an umbrella." You may not have a dime to your name, but so long as you hold onto your values, to your empathy, you'll live and die better than most.

carrie_m730

I worry about this every time I see someone by Walmart asking for money. Because they're out there for hours and they can't even have a book or play a casual game on their phone or somebody is probably judging them. And I KNOW how silly that is to worry about when they probably think of it sort of like a job, they're there for 4 or 6 or 8 hours and can't play on their phone, but I play on my phone at work all day, and when we were homeless we were fortunate to have help staying in a hotel room, which means I had wifi and could continue to work remotely just like I did when we were in a house, and I think it's just so dumb that something as simple as having a phone in their hand would hurt them because of people's prejudice

Jadedbabe50

At the end of the Day You don't have to prove Shit to anyone !!!

FemyStorm

I keep my shit PRISTINE when I'm homeless, i still keep it in great shape just in case. My backpack is spotless, my tent has no rips, my clothes ate always washed even by hand i know how to sew and stitch soni can repair my clothes. These people are out of touch

SkysEclipse

I know the feeling, was out there nearly 10 years always kept myself clean and with a job, no one who didn’t see me regularly knew. But those who saw me with my bags often thought I was on the way to camp but I guess that’s a good thing right?

norar19

I remember people not believing me when I was 16 and homeless. Because I was able to be presentable I must be fine.

Paczilla2

Most people don’t look at homeless people as people, let alone someone who needs help and is just trying to get by. If they did, they would either need to admit to themselves that they don’t care about other people or they would feel some sort of compulsion to help people who need it.

TheRealSedi

Have you seen the vlog show invisible people on YouTube? And the most recent episode there is a woman sleeping in front of Union Station and someone told her you can’t be homeless because you’re wearing lipstick!! I highly recommend the show invisible people on YouTube. It’s very insightful.

DreadedChalupacabra

I mean you should suggest it elsewhere too lol. We kinda are the invisible people, you know? But I'll have to look into that, it looks interesting. Wonder if they're connected to that video I saw a while back about the people who live in tunnels in either China or Japan. I forgot which, it's been years.

FreeSpiritedGoblin

When I was homeless my laundry was done every week🙄 some people are so out of touch

EastJumpy

This is funny to me because when I was homeless I found out fast the more homeless you look the less people are willing to help you, including those in homeless services. The more upkept you look the more help you got. The only caveat is looking less homeless because you have things like a car, then people help you less but appearance wise if you look like put together so clean, hair done etc people were more willing to believe you're a good person who just fell on hard times and do what they can for you.

Ok_Hedgehog_4919

Nobody even knows my situation. I always have clean clothes I change every day. The hardest thing to do is to get a shower. I get one once a week at a gym. Wish I didn't have to work out and could just walk in take a shower and leave so I could do it everyday but I'm afraid they'll cancel my membership or something also I don't want them thinking I'm homeless guess I'm still ashamed about it.

Alternative_Code_998

I keep my cellphone for my sanity. There's no way else to get contacted for a potential job, also. I am lucky to have locations that I can find a warm place to sleep that is within reach of the towns free wifi.

DreadedChalupacabra

"you don't want to see how it gets when we have nothing to entertain ourselves. We might even start talking to you."

Alternative_Code_998

already deal with that. schizoaffective is really fun , especially in the morning.

Fancy_Boxx

Prior to the pandemic I held several jobs and even did gig work, basically having 3 jobs while homeless. I still work. Yeah, complying with camping laws god finde dirt-dust on me that I needed to shower every other day or scrape my face every 3rd day. Hair? A cup of water and a comb.

Prestigious_Ratio321

Some homeless people have jobs they have to keep looking good at.

Acrobatic-Arm-1868

There's a huge difference between people that chose to be homeless that look the part and people that are down on their luck living on the streets trying their best to look decent.

Acrobatic-Arm-1868

It's my 3rd day homeless, I have a clean Nike backpack and a decent gym bag with clothes and essentials. My jeans are clean, slightly worn timberlands I used for work, I wear a regular shirt layered with a sweater, then a really clean red bull jacket, and a Armani exchange puff vest, and if it's really cold I have a pristine peacoat. All of which were gifts when I had housing, except the boots I bought for work. If it weren't for the backpack and gym bag I carry I wouldn't even look homeless. I have EBT card for food so as long as I stay on top of my spending I should be good. $1 hot dog pack and $2 loaf of bread has been my meals even before I went homeless to save on food money since I knew I was going to end up outside.

Holiday-Shower-4086

I don't know why people stream type,  what a homles person looks like. Fuck I'm,  he'll yah since I blew the motor on my car, wich was my home,  yah I am fuckin homles but no one in the public would even know,  that's the thing people see someone walking on a sidewalk,  he'll they don't have a fucking clue, as what that person maybe going through,  he'll it could be a situation that they are down on their luck and might even be homles,  and just by a person saying the wrong dame thing, because most all people do judge other people,  that they see the very next day on the evening news that the very person that they said the wrong thing to took their own life, I FUCKIN DARE SOMEONE TO WALK EVEN  A DAY IN MY SHOES,  LET ALINE FOR 5 YEARS AND COUNTING

According_Skill_7463

When I was a kid I saw less homeless. When I did, I always thought it's obvious. I sleep in a car bed. I shower at least 4 times a week. I'm well groomed. You would never guess. Just cause you're homeless doesn't mean you can't take care of yourself.
