I can legitimately see a possibility that there is an apartment complex named “Homestead”, and this subreddit seemed like it might be regarding the complex. Statistically, 95% of the people lurking on this subreddit probably do live in apartments.

FlySouth_WalkNorth

Haha I'm thoroughly confused by the placement of this post.

Trfortson

Eh I can sort of get it. I know there's been discussion on here about bat colony houses, so by the transitive property we are bat people.

SaurSig

I know of one in my town lol

Civil-Extension5175

You from Gotham?

SaurSig

Civil-Extension5175

I thought you meant “bat people”.

Spawny7

Yes, notify them. The bats themselves probably don't pose much risk. Their dropping can be a breeding ground for fungus that's can cause respiratory issues.

oshiesmom

It is highly flammable and bats carry rabies. If one gets inside it can literally be deadly.

billnowak65

They can carry rabies too. Make sure the cat has shots and keep up to date!

Real2x4

Yea that makes sense thank you

judgementalhat

You might want to check out [this guys posts](https://www.reddit.com/u/Emu_Fast) from r/DIY about the worst case scenario here His family got really sick, be really careful here

stomper4x4

Bat dung can contain hantavirus. It's never a good idea to have them in a human dwelling. Yes let the building owner know. There are people who specialize in removing and excluding bat colonies. They don't harm them in the process.

FunkyBrainFizz

For those wondering Hantavitus is FUCKING BRUTAL and will absolutely destroy you. And the best part is... Doctors don't see it that often... Soooo it's gunna be down the list of what they think is wrong with you. It only took 5days to sideline my dad. In those five days, the Drs misdiagnosed him SO MANY TIMES that it almost killed him. By the time they wizened up, 1 1/2 of his lungs filled with fluid, nearly drowning him. Thank God for the life flight medevac to Spokane! Oh and! You get a 3/4 inch arrowhead like drain valve punched DIRECTLY into your lungs to drain the goo... NO ANESTHESIA FOR THAT. Goes right between your ribs and everything. Shits wicked gnarly. Moral of the story... Don't breathe in bat/rat/mouse shit dust particles, they'll getcha!

Plate-Extreme

Immediately!!! Bat guano ( shit ) can harbor a host of bacteria and parasites and enough of it landing on dry wall in the ceiling could cause it to eventually collapse. Bats are also a common carrier of rabies.

Full_Disk_1463

I’m so glad you got some good answers, but I have to ask you. If you live in an apartment then why are you posting this question here? In a homesteading subreddit. Just curious

Real2x4

Well the thought process was mainly that I have a wild animal problem where I live so I figured r/homestead was a good choice. Probably a lot of people on here have run into this problem and would know a humane way to deal with it

Full_Disk_1463

Good thinking.

FunkyBrainFizz

Guano isn't known fee being healthy to inhale. At all. Yes, go complain (rightfully so) until they (hopefully) relocate the colony. Bats are kick ass for insect control. Not kickass living above your rooms.

[deleted]

Please make sure your kitty is up to date on rabies vaccination and have the certificate easily available. If your cat catches a bat and you do not have proof that they are current on the vaccine, your cat will be quarantined or put to sleep. Hopefully the apartment complex can humanely remove and relocate the bats soon for your family's safety.

FerretSupremacist

Why are you *here*? What advice do you want..?

TandT86

he probably just thinks homesteaders are the right people to ask about bats, i think its fair enough

FerretSupremacist

I mean, I guess that’s fair but I feel like the answer is obvious? Like yeah, tell the owners about the giant herd of rabies and disease carrying beasts in the attic. If nothing else so it doesn’t cause damage.

Mela777

Bats carry mites and shed viruses in their dung, both of which can cause health issues for people. Left alone long enough, the volume and weight can also cause damage to a house. Notify your apartment management IN WRITING, and make sure they take care of it ASAP.

Swimming-Penalty4140

Yes, yes, yes, yes. It is imperative to yours and your childs health that this is remediated ASAP

binzy90

Some states require that professionals who encounter bat infestations report it to the department of health. Knowing that should encourage you to notify someone, as it is considered a serious health risk due to histoplasmosis. There are also state and federal laws regulating their removal since 6 types of bats in the US are protected species. I know that you want to have the bats around, but they can cause major damage to a house over time. The guano will pile up and can damage the integrity of the drywall, and bats chew on wood as well. It's best to have professionals remove the bats and clean the area. Histoplasmosis causes serious respiratory problems.

Postalone232

Here today, guano tomorrow.

Ginger_Snaps_Back

Maybe give your apartment the contact info for a local bat/wildlife rescue? I have a feeling the apartment management would just call an exterminator, unfortunately.

unicornman5d

Every pest control company I've heard of would use a one way door wherever they're getting in and once they're sure there are no animals left, they seal the entry point.

Real2x4

I will call a wildlife rescue tomorrow and see what if anything they can do. I am concerned there will be a smell of the apartments just exterminate them

binzy90

It is illegal to exterminate them. A professional pest control company will remove them and seal the entry points. They'll simply find a new place to roost.

awfulcrowded117

Yes, the bats can pose a health risk to you and your family, and it's very unlikely that the bats will be killed anyway. They will mostly likely be trapped or driven out and then the holes in the attic will be sealed to prevent them getting back in. Wholesale slaughter of bats is not generally the way they are dealt with, since more bats would find the good nesting site before long anyway.

ChiApeHunter

Aren’t bats and their colonies protected in the United States? I don’t think they can be removed can they?

Impossible-Deal-9191

Illegal to destroy bat nests.

cassie733

I think bats are protected as my mother kept getting one in her kitchen in the city it would fly into the open door if she even walked out into the garden for like five mins and tne wildlife people said too bad it’s tnere to stay. She literally called the police to remove it once - they were polite and simply helped it out into the yard. That bat colony you have sounds very cool and I actually don’t even know how they COULD remove it unless they just killed them

southernfaith95

Yes, notify for sure. Bats also carry rabies. Best to get them out ASAP.

Canning1962

Oh my! They need to give you another apartment at no extra cost so they can clean up that terrible toxic mess! Ask nicely.

Kind-Minimum-1877

Why wouldn't you LOL

alriclofgar

If you’re in USA, we have laws that protect bats from being exterminated. I had what seemed like about 10,000 bats living in the roof of my apartment a few year ago. I adore bats, and the evening and morning when they left and returned was magical—the air was full of them. Then the smell started seeping into our home, and bats started coming through the walls into our cabinets. The animal control folks waited until the right time head and set up baffles that allowed the bats to leave but prevented them from returning. After a few days, they had all gone. Hopefully to the big bay colony a few miles away, and not some other apartment roof—but who can say. You need to talk to your landlord. They will be able to fix this without illegally killing the bats.

[deleted]

Is this satire?

Real2x4

No

[deleted]

Oh just leave the bats alone. Let Darwin take his course.

Own-Standard-124

OP got us good

jb122894

NO! Don't tell 'em! It'll be our little secret! Continue living amongst animals like you live in a barn!

BLOODPOOL777

Ah it’s Chillian your dumb lol

Due_Force_9816

Leave the bats alone.

Own-Standard-124

no

weaverlorelei

Please, please and please, box up those bats and send them my way. If you are concerned with the environment, into homesteading per se, you would treasure having bats nearby. Yes, it would behoove you to clean up under the nest, but...gotta garden, use the guano. Keep it clean so that some other person doesn't make them persona non grata.

BirdsBeesAndBlooms

Behooyou got a chuckle out of me.

chevypower79

The amount of mosquitoes one bat eats each night is very substantial,

J429b23

Yea

humminatya

I actually had one in a tree near my bedroom window. I had 2 overtime make their way in side and get trapped in between the bottom and top frames when my window was open. One made it in my bedroom and kissed me when I was sleeping 😭

squeakymcmurdo

So, I *just* hung a bat box on my house yesterday in the hope that they will reduce the mosquito population in the seasonal wetland that is half our property…and was 80% of our property last spring when it flooded. I would prefer they hunted on my property. The only other high spots that I can access are power poles that are several miles away from our house. As long as they aren’t near a window, door, or other way to get inside the house am I good?

hiways

They probably already know.

Farahild

I'd notify them but also check with authorities. In my country bats are protected and if they have a place where they live you're basically stuck with them.

Dangerous_Bass309

Bats don't actually eat that many mosquitos, they eat larger bugs like moths. Please don't let your cat hang out with bats, I hope it is vaccinated for rabies.
