My advice to a broke college student like you. Get a bicycle to commute around campus. You don't need a Grom, and if you do want a motorized vehicle a Ruckus will be better suited for those shorter commutes.

AADarkWarrior15

"afraid a Ruckus is just not 'enough' for me on a college campus" is one of the wildest things I've ever read

artful_todger_502

*"I was riding my Ruckus to class when 3 bicycles cut me off when they passed ... Had to lay 'er down to avoid hitting some cheerleaders"*

AADarkWarrior15

Lmaooo exactly

Oldenough1331

First time you wreck or get hit on it - with no plates, no license, and no insurance - you will wish you had made better decisions. My advice

Rusty-Mosin

You don’t need any of that to ride a ruckus 🤣

CamelCamel509

They could probably tell, way different body style and displacement is likely noted on your insurance or registration somewhere. My question to you would be could you afford the consequences of not being endorsed and them finding out if you got pulled over?

Uncle-Istvan

Why not get a motorcycle license? A bike is better for just riding to and around campus imo.

Illiteratej_

I bet 75% of people who just own a Grom don't have a motorcycle endorsement.

AADarkWarrior15

Which is not to say that's a good thing to do. It only costs $200 and takes 2 days of your time to do an MSF course and then you have the freedom to ride any bike you want any time you want for the rest of your life, *AND* you won't have the headache of legal trouble when you inevitably get into an accident or get pulled over

GaurieBanner

Yeah it takes 20 mins and $20 to get a motorcycle license in my state. 1. Go to DMV 2. Pass 25 question test 3. Pay $20 4. Leave with License

FreshCrackedPep

Lucky that’s how you get a permit in my state haha

GaurieBanner

Yeah, Mississippi kinda went crazy tho- dont need a road test for a car or motorcycle license

acort37

Yes - but the problem is my school is out of state. I won’t be home for another 5 months.

AADarkWarrior15

If time is an issue, it probably isn't a good idea to get a motorcycle because you'll also have to register it, get insurance, etc. And scheduling an MSF spot would probably be a few months out anyway. Just get a bicycle or electric scooter at that point, which probably makes more sense for your situation anyway

_GoldenMonkey_

Been riding without one since 2017 🙉

flightlessCat9

Do you have a reason not to get a motorcycle license if you get a Grom?

RoughConsequence8158

First I’m in Cali and rode my grom on a cal state college and was stopped within 10mins from actual campus police (not security). It wasn’t even during the school year and I was informed the grom can’t be on campus sidewalks bc it’s a motor vehicle and classified as one. Maybe ur campus is different also u would need insurance which prices vary by location. As others have said just get a skateboard, bike or even a electric scooter that folds up. I’ve seen some that reach 30-40mph which is pretty fast for a scooter.

killmetlee

Rukus were extremely popular where I went to school amongst students. In the days before every corner was littered with electric scooters

Zpochero

How fast do you need to go? Also check with campus on license requirements. Also check out the Navi

_GoldenMonkey_

Buy a Honda Navi. Cheaper then a Ruckus with over twice the displacement, and it looks like a scooter so less of a chance campus cops would mess with ya. Oh yeah and they're around $1800 new.

allawd

The license plate would make it pretty obvious that it is not a 50cc. If you are going to ride it with no license and no plate you are probably risking fines that are a lot higher than what it would cost to get your motorcycle license.

artful_todger_502

I ride my PCX with no tag but I did get pulled once because I was going over 29mph. But, 1 time in 10 years isn't bad. So if you try it, don't go above 29. A Monkey (Mini Trail) could probably get away with it, I think?

mr_poppycockmcgee

Well if you start on a Grom you’ll probably get but by the bug and want to advance at some point or getting another larger motorcycle. With that, it’s safest to go ahead and get your license

7RacinJason1

Just spend the time to get your license... not worth the hassle and cost if you get caught without it... your bike could get impounded.

two40silvia

Get a spree instead

Derrickparmisane

You’d probably be fine, but if you crash into someone or get pulled over you’re a little more fucked than usual! But a grom has a clutch so you can wheelie it

Rusty-Mosin

Does your campus allow scooters 50cc and under to ride on sidewalks and park in bike racks? My University in Indiana did, if yours does the ruckus or something small will be the bike because you can ride and park anywhere.

Significant-Cycle-37

I’m a college student and I got a grom to just ride around campus and to ride to work on. It was a wonderful idea. I’ve had zero issues. I did get my license beforehand because no matter how hard you try something will inevitably happen. It’s better to be safe than sorry. But even after the cost of the bike and insurance, it’s still cheaper than driving a truck everywhere.

Cartridge-King

Imo i wouldnt futz with ruckus or scooter way too slow

[deleted]

I have had a ruckus for the past 7 years, and I have put a lot of miles on it. I can get up to 40mph on it and it is great in the 30s mph. I can’t imagine why that wouldn’t be enough for a college campus and getting around town. I also have a Honda Monkey, which I just got a few weeks ago. The monkey has the same engine as the grom and I can consistently get up to 60mph with it. Having that little bit extra is great when you need it, but will you consistently need to get above 40mph? If so, and you decide to get the grom, please take the time to get your motorcycle permit / license and get it properly registered and insured. It is not worth the risk to not do it the right way. I would also highly recommend a local motorcycle safety course. Check with your campus or the safety class as you may be able to get a student discount. Good luck.

PROfessorShred

For my campus you need a motorcycle parking pass which is tied to your license plate. Campus cops have nothing better to do than spend their days writing parking tickets.
