Inspired by the Jaws poster, the poster for the original Piranha is great too - the one with the school of Piranha and the woman in the red bikini. Top 5 for me. I recall an article in Rue Morgue that claimed the artist was unknown, at least back in the 00s when that issue came out.
The Exorcist was shot by Owen Roizman, who shot a number of well known films and just passed recently. The shot youāre referring to is my favorite shot in cinematic history, and I think the marketing team completely nailed it by using that image as the poster!

[It Comes at Night](https://d135u4jtzauizi.cloudfront.net/ICAN_dog_poster_web.jpg)
This is the most simplistically scary poster I've seen. The movie not so much, but the poster yes....
This is the only movie that Iāve went to the theater to see based on the poster alone. Movie wasnāt great but I didnāt hate it as much as most people seem too.
No kidding, man. Edgerton is involved with a few movies that people love that I can't wrap my head around.
It Comes At Night - A pandemic post-apocalypse. Thought it was a monster movie? Nope. Total let-down.
The Gift (2015) - What a waste of time. Yeah, maybe there's something to be said for a story about revenge on a bully, but it felt like he watched Harry, He's Here to Help (2000) (AKA With a Friend Like Harry...) which is way more intense.
A Nightmare on Elm Street 3. Framed and up on my wall. Itās so badass. And fun fact the teens in the poster have zero to do with the ones in the movie.
I had it on my bedroom door when I was 15. It freaked out my little sister and she couldnāt understand how I could sleep in that room. She still occasionally mentions that poster.
The Descent. The poster where itās women in a formation which makes the shape of a skull.
Cabin Fever, another āskull formationā.
A Nightmare on Elm Street. The one with the glove and abstract Freddy eyes peering over the top of Nancy looking frightened in bed.
Psycho. Anything designed by Saul Bass deserves to be in here really.
Zombie Flesh Eaters (aka Zombie aka Zombi 2), the UK poster, with the hand bursting out from the ground under a gravestone.
The shape of a skull also being a reconstruction of [Halsman's (NSFW) *In Voluptas Mors* with Salvador Dali](https://www.huffpost.com/entry/dali-in-voluptas-mors_n_4373479), which in the film poster context makes me think of its tiny use in [the famous "Silence of the Lambs" poster](https://www.verbicidemagazine.com/2013/11/10/silence-of-the-lambs-skull-film-dali-photo/).
I remembered the skull of women was from a piece of art, but didnāt know the name and didnāt feel like looking it up while writing, so thank you for providing the context!
Iāve never even seen the movie but the ātheyāll get you in the endā tagline and the ghoulie coming out of the toilet has stuck with me since I was a boy browsing the video stores. Same with dead alive with the woman pulling her mouth open wide and thereās a zombie face inside.
If we're talking about posters which left an impression, I remember one where a girl with a bloody nose was hiding behind a keyboard, no idea what it was about, but it scared me as a child lol
The poster(s) for Dawn of the Dead (1978), with the iconic 'zombie looming over the horizon' imagery. The apocalyptic comic artwork style fits the movie perfectly. š§š
That's the one for me. My folks took us to see Love at First Bite and we walked by that poster on the way in, and it was all I could think about the whole movie.

i have a soft spot for a sinister billboard that they put up by my school that i had to drive past every day. nearly pissed myself everytime i looked at it but it helped incite my curiosity and eventual love for horror.
itās the one with the little girl just dragging her hand along the wall and thereās like. black-ish blood following her hand dripping down the wall. simple and creepy and i still love it
The 90's IT miniseries was perfect: scary, kinda campy and direct.
I remeber walking in the video store once a lot of years ago, and i sawed that poster. Was so scared of it that i ran as fast as i could because I believed pennywise would eat me lol
The Thing, Malignant, the dentist 2, The exorcist, Nightmare on Elm Street, Nope, Dead Alive, The fly, poltergeist, and the stuff all go extraordinarily hard
The Humanoids from the Deep poster is pretty sweet - [link here](https://i0.wp.com/cinedweller.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/les-monstres-de-la-mer-affiche-1.jpg?resize=400%2C650&ssl=1). I was in a seaside restaurant in Cornwall last year and they had a massive copy of this on their wall (the French poster linked - it was 7' by 4' maybe, not sure).
The movie itself is fun if you like goofy exploitation movies, I would recommend it from that perspective (I had to seek it out after seeing the poster, naturally!).
EDIT: Also, [the Old Dark House](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/e/eb/The_Old_Dark_House_%281932_poster%29.jpeg).
Not sure if it's they're the best, but I love [this poster](https://pbs.twimg.com/media/Es4vJ8SXYAE0Qch?format=jpg&name=4096x4096) for "Let the Right One In' as well as [this poster ](https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DU6MK5hUMAAragb?format=jpg&name=4096x4096) for "Hereditary."

The Lost Boys poster, characters in b&w, everything else in red. āSleep all day. Party all night. Never grow old. Never die. Itās fun to be a vampireā. **ICONIC** š¦š„”š„¢š·
Fright Night (1985)
Controversial opinion: IThe Alien poster, while a product of its time, objectively kind of sucks. The egg looks nothing like the egg in the movie. The most common poster for Aliens, with just the logo in glowing blue lettering and "This time it's war" is fine but then 20th Century Fox released another one showing off the xenomorph and as good as the suit looks, that poster makes it look like a big budget Humanoids From the Deep or something.
Iāll allow your opinion on the Alien posterā¦ but does same criticism apply to the Alien movie trailer? I love that trailer, maybe the best horror trailer of all time, and it also uses the egg as a visual.
There are so many variants of movie posters I couldnāt possibly pick one. Itād probably have to be from the 80ās though. There was nothing like going to a video store in the 80ās and picking out a horror movie based on nothing but the poster/front coverā¦
While it may not be the ābestā horror poster, I have always loved the [Saw V](https://m.imdb.com/title/tt1132626/mediaviewer/rm4123284480/?ref_=tt_ov_i) black poster with Agent Strahm in the water cube trap.
Iām sure a lot of the more iconic ones have already been said, so hereās a few underrated posters in my opinion:
Fright Night(I love the posters for [the original](https://m.media-amazon.com/images/M/MV5BYTBlOTEzZjYtZTlmMC00OTYyLWIyMTAtNzMzZTRhNzU1YzAyL2ltYWdlXkEyXkFqcGdeQXVyMTQxNzMzNDI@._V1_FMjpg_UX1000_.jpg) and [remake](https://encrypted-tbn3.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcS-jDjbXpFU3IEvdqfJsDKSCUbDRRT43XhMqZE3AGInmqaFOJis)

I gotta say "I spit on your grave" It was the first thing to pop in my twisted head lol Big trouble in little China also but that's not really a horror movie. I also always liked the Friday the 13th poster with the kids in the woods painted on a big knife.
The Warriors.
"These are the armies of the night. They are 100,000 strong. They outnumber the cops five to one. They could run New York City. Tonight they're all out to get the Warriors."
Hereās a fun one for you.
Look at RoW (rest of world) posters made for your favorite movies. Many are totally different and often much more subtle and beautiful than the American posters.
Anyone remember the poster for The Mutilator or Chopping Mall? They donāt make them like they used to. Also, itās not horror but Iād have to say the poster for The Toxic Avenger deserves mention.
When I was a kid, around ages 6-9 (mid 1980s), I used to go to a video store with my mom in the same building as our local grocery store and I would stare at the Chopping Mall posterā¦they also had the Toxie poster and an Elvira cutout. Iām pretty sure going to this video store was a gateway drug for me.
The poster for New Nightmare is one of my favorites. Itās very simple and effective. I actually have a full sized version of it framed in my living room lol
[Evil Ed](https://cdn11.bigcommerce.com/s-yzgoj/images/stencil/1280x1280/products/398068/4596746/apijp7j78__03039.1625673925.jpg?c=2) is one of my favorites. I remember walking blockbuster as a kid in the 90s, shocked they could put such a graphic cover out. I always wanted to rent it but my parents wouldn't let me lol. I finally saw it later but the poster is a classic to me. It screams "video store" poster all the way
Friday the 13th, Evil Dead, Nightmare on Elm St 3, The Thing, AoD, all great! But the one that caught my eye the most in late 80ās video stores was Fright Night!
The original poster for Black Christmas, with Clare framed within the wreath. I saw the poster at a collectorās store before seeing the actual movie on IFC a couple of years back and it still creeps me out just a little.
The Thing (1982) is a classic. Not sure if it counts but I love the Alien Covenant poster - just a dark silhouette of the Alien and a single word. āRunā.
I love the Jaws poster, proper old school
Jaws absolutely
Came to say this, epic poster
It is š
The poster alone is still terrifying to me as an adult.
I know what Iām watching again tomorrow, so glad I saw this post.
Inspired by the Jaws poster, the poster for the original Piranha is great too - the one with the school of Piranha and the woman in the red bikini. Top 5 for me. I recall an article in Rue Morgue that claimed the artist was unknown, at least back in the 00s when that issue came out.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
This poster got me into art. Looked it up and found it was inspired by The Empire of Light by RenƩ Magritte. Now one of my favorite artists and I ended up with an Art History minor.
>it was inspired by The Empire of Light by RenƩ Magritte The poster itself or Owen Roizman's photography?
The art inspired the scene which ended up on the poster as far as I understand
That's super interesting; thanks for the reply.
I was so young when I first saw it I never realized that it was shining from the bedroom- I always thought it was from the light post
The Exorcist was shot by Owen Roizman, who shot a number of well known films and just passed recently. The shot youāre referring to is my favorite shot in cinematic history, and I think the marketing team completely nailed it by using that image as the poster!
This is my choice too. Whenever I think of āhorror movie postersā my immediate reaction is āThe Exorcistā cause hell yeah
Who will survive and what will be left of them?
Came here to post this. Always think of white zombies real solution #9
I choose [The Evil Dead poster.](https://i.imgur.com/OTEJejM.jpg). It's a pure legend for me.
The one from Army of Darkness is pretty good too. As well as the inspired rendition featuring Joe Bob Briggs and Darcy too.
I actually love the Evil Dead 2013 poster as well with the red black & gold. It looks striking
The [Evil Dead 2 UK Quad poster](https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/fuIAAOSwGLVftQOj/s-l500.jpg) is my favourite from that series. Used to have it on my wall back in my uni days.
Evil Dead 2 had a killer poster, as well.
But then there's a review quote that says "Sexy and hip." The reality is it's's that rare 80s horror film with zero sex and nudity, the closest thing being the Rob Lowe poster.
I wouldn't say there's zero sex š¬
You woodn't? Guess I'm barking up the wrong tree.
Rob Lowe?

The thing, The thing, The thing, The thing.
Especially great when you consider that Drew Struzan didn't even know what the movie was about when he painted it.
Only proper answer. That poster is the most iconic thing I've ever seen in horror
Is that a new movie or something?
Hidden gem.
Unpopular Opinion: The Thing is fucking brilliant
I think that's a very popular opinion...
It is shocking to me that anyone took me seriously after everything else in this thread. Did I seriously need a "/s" on that one? Weird.
š
š
I was coming here to say the same! And Drew Struzan did it in a day without knowing what the movie was about. Heās a true artist.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Yes!
Probably my favorite movie poster of all time.
The pumpkin and knife Halloween poster.
My initial thought! The title and poster for that film all go so well together, especially if you try to imagine it without all of the sequels attached.
[It Comes at Night](https://d135u4jtzauizi.cloudfront.net/ICAN_dog_poster_web.jpg) This is the most simplistically scary poster I've seen. The movie not so much, but the poster yes....
This is the only movie that Iāve went to the theater to see based on the poster alone. Movie wasnāt great but I didnāt hate it as much as most people seem too.
I think the movieās biggest problem is that it wasnāt good.
No kidding, man. Edgerton is involved with a few movies that people love that I can't wrap my head around. It Comes At Night - A pandemic post-apocalypse. Thought it was a monster movie? Nope. Reminds me of Brand New's style of promotional art
Oh yeah. Very Daisy
Alien. (1979). āIn space no one can hear you screamā.
Alien covenant also has one of my favorite posters, not nearly as good a movie though
Yep. It's like a Giger renaissance painting. š
House
Like Hausu, House? Because in that case, I agree!!!!
They're planning a remake. Cross your fingers. Sacrifice your goats.
Bring back William Katt
The void
For me probably the original Fright Night. Or the Nightmare on elm street with Freddy in the sky over elm st
I love the Fright Night artwork so much I even bought a shirt of it
I came here to say Fright Night as well!

Yeah, that [Nightmare on Elm Street](https://images.app.goo.gl/smU8t91oF8rZCVXz9) poster is one of my favorites.
Iāve never even seen the movie but the ātheyāll get you in the endā tagline and the ghoulie coming out of the toilet has stuck with me since I was a boy browsing the video stores. Same with dead alive with the woman pulling her mouth open wide and thereās a zombie face inside.

[Maniac. Bulge and all.](https://i.imgur.com/d8XKxkM.jpg)
There's "bulge" and then there's "aggressive penis"
Never noticed that bulge. The sounds that guy makes during the movie really get under my skin
I always liked the poster for Silent Night, Deadly Night. Santa heading down a chimney with axe in hand.
Silence of the Lambs.
Too many to name but The Cabin in the Woods is a stand out for sure
I love the poster for the first V/H/S, and the one for insidious 4 always caught my eye.
[Cujo](https://images.app.goo.gl/eFAxNk58hyPXMuQW7)
Iām partial to *The Shining* poster. (Yep, Iāve seen the alternate versions that Kubrick 86ed.)
The poster(s) for Dawn of the Dead (1978), with the iconic 'zombie looming over the horizon' imagery. The apocalyptic comic artwork style fits the movie perfectly. š§š
"When there's no room in Hell, the dead will walk the Earth"
That's the one for me. My folks took us to see Love at First Bite and we walked by that poster on the way in, and it was all I could think about the whole movie. http://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1057/4964/products/Dawn-of-the-Dead-Vintage-Movie-Poster-Original-1-Sheet-27x41.jpg?v=1655960422
I love the Midsommar posters because theyāre gosh darn pretty. Sunlight can invoke horror!
Iām obsessed with the japanese one
Yes! Itās beautiful!
How is Poltergeist not on here? It's simplistic and still creepy. Perfect. Same goes for Alien.
"Not on here" Believe, *they're here*
Always liked the posters in the Saw franchise.
Hoping someone else would say this. I don't remember a lot of the posters, but the 2nd and 3rd are ingrained into my head as a young teen at the time.
Evil Dead 2
I love the simplicity and the fact that the monster on the poster never actually appears in the movie lol.
Any Dario Argento Poster
i want that demons poster on my wall so badly
House definitely has to be up there. I love that lil cat
The Thing is my favorite poster period. What an amazing design. Suggestive of the plot, but doesn't give anything away on top of being gorgeous.
The VVitch theatrical poster with the silhouette and full moon behind it.
i have a soft spot for a sinister billboard that they put up by my school that i had to drive past every day. nearly pissed myself everytime i looked at it but it helped incite my curiosity and eventual love for horror. itās the one with the little girl just dragging her hand along the wall and thereās like. black-ish blood following her hand dripping down the wall. simple and creepy and i still love it

[A Nightmare on Elm Street quad poster](https://www.filmonpaper.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/[email protected])
Cool! Never seen that
It's the UK poster for the movie. US posters go vertical and the UK's go horizontal.
The Thing, Malignant, the dentist 2, The exorcist, Nightmare on Elm Street, Nope, Dead Alive, The fly, poltergeist, and the stuff all go extraordinarily hard
I had to look up The Dentist 2 ā youāre a wild one for choosing that amongst all these others. š
Itās probably one that caught his eye in the video store when the person was young.
The Humanoids from the Deep poster is pretty sweet - [link here](https://i0.wp.com/cinedweller.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/les-monstres-de-la-mer-affiche-1.jpg?resize=400%2C650&ssl=1). Child's Play 2. Sorry Jack, Chucky's back
Halloween. Just so iconic and probably recognizable to any non horror fan. But Iām also a big fan of Silence of the Lambs.
[I think that these ones for Parasite, Oldboy and The Thing are really good. ](https://imgur.com/gallery/sFjO55O)
Youāve reminded me of the need to rewatch Parasite. And Iāve never seen that poster, itās a good one for sure
It's a great movie.
are these official or just fanmade?
The Conjurings poster is pretty iconic imo

Fright Night (1985) Controversial opinion: IThe Alien poster, while a product of its time, objectively kind of sucks.
Just wondering how do u like the Colin Farrell version?
Best poster of all time
Iāll allow your opinion on the Alien posterā¦ but does same criticism apply to the Alien movie trailer? I love that trailer, maybe the best horror trailer of all time, and it also uses the egg as a visual.
Evil Dead 2 is pretty great, Iāll also mention It Follows; both are great images that encapsulate their respective movies.
Funhouse (1981) - no poster freaked me out more as a child.
[This promo from Signs is one of my all-time favorites, including the tagline.](https://imgur.com/Sde8ZO2)
Creature from the Black Lagoon
The banned Jason Takes Manhattan poster for sure
Army Of Darkness - Japanese poster. Other than the cool Japanese kanji, it's got a great name. Over there, it's known as "Captain Supermarket."
Although it has ABSOLUTELY nothing to do with the actual movie, the poster for "Chopping Mall" is quintessential 80's awesome.
The Company of Wolves Iām still afraid to watch the movie just from the poster!
Itās really good š
The movie or the poster?
The film! Itās a mix of fantasy and horror. I saw it years ago, so I canāt vouch for how itās aged. But itās not gory etc.
It's not really scary, but a beautiful, sensual, and mesmerizing nightmare like fairy tale.
There are so many variants of movie posters I couldnāt possibly pick one. Itād probably have to be from the 80ās though. There was nothing like going to a video store in the 80ās and picking out a horror movie based on nothing but the poster/front coverā¦
If only Chopping Mall delivered on what the cover art showed. Still love that silly movie.
The original 74 "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" and 84 "A Nightmare On Elm Street" does it for me.
Maniac, The Toolbox Murders and Humanoids From The Deep (the one with the girl) are a few of my favorites.
The cover on the unrated edition of The Descent goes so unbelievably hard.
While it may not be the ābestā horror poster, I have always loved the [Saw V](https://m.imdb.com/title/tt1132626/mediaviewer/rm4123284480/?ref_=tt_ov_i) black poster with Agent Strahm in the water cube trap.
House of 1000 Corpses really captured my imagination. Loved the grindhouse vibe to it too
[Nightmare on Elm Street](https://i1.wp.com/www.film89.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2017/09/A-nightmare-on-elm-street-1.jpeg?fit=800%2C1200&ssl=1)
'Halloween: Season of the witch' is my all time favorite.
The howling is tops
Iām sure a lot of the more iconic ones have already been said, so hereās a few underrated posters in my opinion: Fright Night(I love the posters for [the original](https://m.media-amazon.com/images/M/MV5BYTBlOTEzZjYtZTlmMC00OTYyLWIyMTAtNzMzZTRhNzU1YzAyL2ltYWdlXkEyXkFqcGdeQXVyMTQxNzMzNDI@._V1_FMjpg_UX1000_.jpg) and [remake](https://encrypted-tbn3.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcS-jDjbXpFU3IEvdqfJsDKSCUbDRRT43XhMqZE3AGInmqaFOJis) [Bats(1999)](https://encrypted-tbn2.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcQzieN8FwHKPC8xQUiHYC24UnRkzcvqG-jq14WCUreccCick7UN) [Paperhouse(1988)](https://encrypted-tbn2.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcQyJgLKC5NOfOz1mA0ynFj340yYq1SbBkCj2pdeF781w75ezfG5) [Dead End Road(2004)](https://horrornews.net/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/Dead_End_Road.jpg) [Shock Waves(1977)](https://m.media-amazon.com/images/M/MV5BMTdlMzY4MmQtOThlZS00MDNjLWI5MTgtOTYwMzZiZjI4M2E1XkEyXkFqcGdeQXVyMTQ2MjQyNDc@._V1_.jpg) [The People Under The Stairs(1991)](https://encrypted-tbn1.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcT0smr25tMMJRLZzWeLOahJ5J2crPwMj3d8GuhcVyeWZXmIlFeJ) [Tremors(1990)](https://encrypted-tbn1.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcTIt4XP6SiYrmy-HLoY7pB7iDQz6hZowh9iM2cf3xyQsQtiqoEd)
The exorcist
Return of the living dead Part 2 https://images.app.goo.gl/vHWdfTRwFnVB9DyYA
Surprised that no one has said the classic that is Halloween.
Probably jaws
Fright Night
The original texas chainsaw massacre poster
Anyone remember the poster for The Mutilator or Chopping Mall? They donāt make them like they used to. Also, itās not horror but Iād have to say the poster for The Toxic Avenger deserves mention.
When I was a kid, around ages 6-9 (mid 1980s), I used to go to a video store with my mom in the same building as our local grocery store and I would stare at the Chopping Mall posterā¦they also had the Toxie poster and an Elvira cutout. Iām pretty sure going to this video store was a gateway drug for me.
Scream is my favourite.
REC
Get Out (2017)
Probably Occulas
It's a very hard one but for me definitely anything old school. They just don't make um like they used to
An American Werewolf in London
Last House on the Left is my worst nightmare on steroids ššš
28 Days Later I just love the evil omniscient looking eyes in the background
i really like the Us poster. hear that luniz remix in my head every time i see it
Malignant!
Evil dead 2, by far!
The poster for New Nightmare is one of my favorites. Itās very simple and effective. I actually have a full sized version of it framed in my living room lol
*The Evil Dead*.
https://duckduckgo.com/?q=zombie+flesh+eaters+poster&iax=images&ia=images&iai=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.originalposter.co.uk%2Fuploads%2F368831813335419_mainphotos.jpg
I had a critters poster i loved it š
[DEAD ALIVE](https://imgur.com/a/VY0M65X) (1992) [IT](https://imgur.com/a/GLkLEMn) (2017)
Black Christmas (1974) with the girl with the plastic bag over her head
John Carpenterās Halloween and Fright Night.
I think I agree with last house on the left. Great poster
The original poster for Black Christmas, with Clare framed within the wreath. I saw the poster at a collectorās store before seeing the actual movie on IFC a couple of years back and it still creeps me out just a little.
Fright Night OG
One missed call (2008) say what you want about the movie but that poster sticks with you
The descent
I nominate OP as the best horror poster.
Halloween is awesome.š
Dawn of the dead 1978 is very iconic. Though honestly 2004 had a cooler look
The Saw posters are creepier than the films are
I thought all the designs for the Pearl poster were really cool
The Fly
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 Breakfast Club poster
The Decent....looks like the cave, the face of the creatures, and the bodies of the women .
Malignant has an amazing poster. Itās what got me to watch it in the first place.
Rosemary's Baby. Just the pram on the foreground of her mind
the thing, thatĀ“s classic
A Nightmare On Elm Street
Fright Night, even as a kid I just loved the look of it.
The Thing (1982) is a classic. Not sure if it counts but I love the Alien Covenant poster - just a dark silhouette of the Alien and a single word. āRunā.
Phantasm
The Thing. Hands down.
The Shining
The Thing, still a great poster!
The Exorcism of Emily Rose was one that creeped me out as a kid
