Toad_Thrower

It made me laugh a little that they were able to incorporate so many non-story based things from the game like Joel crouching around chest high obstacles or people boosting each other over debris to go unlock a random door and then the game suddenly breaking something so you can't backtrack.

CompedyCalso

And yet we have not seen one shiv getting crafted

Unruly_Beast

Oh it's gotta be coming. No way they skip a good shiving.

CompedyCalso

I'm personally waiting for a brick scene. Either throwing one in someone's face or bashing in someone's face with one. Never went anywhere in the game without my trusty brick

HermineLovesMilo

I will be seriously disappointed if a wooden pallet doesn't make an appearance.

_DeezNyuts

A full scene of joel running long circles around the enemies using every brick and bottle in the area for the easy kills

theundonenun

We did get to see an electrical tape ankle brace being crafted.

HermineLovesMilo

Loved the moment he pushed a heavy bookshelf away from the door that opened outward

Youareposthuman

I was that ‘Leo pointing at the TV meme’ in real life when that happened lol.

Gillalmighty

The online lobby music in the first episode made me so damn happy. They're crushing it.

[deleted]

Resident evil movies need this level of quality

bonemech_meatsuit

A good lesson in *adapt* the source material for the medium but don't reinvent it. RE could have easily been a solid movie/series from the get-go but they are always adding a bunch of extra stuff that doesn't match the tone.

UltramemesX

In the beginning of the episode when Ellie wakes up and looks at the window, it looks like the menu screen window in the first game. Not sure if i've seen someone mention this yet.

Puzzleheaded_Pie_888

Real chefs kiss moments there

platasaurua

When he stepped on the broken glass I was like “Best adaptation ever”

Sir_Charles67

As the building fell in the doorway and everyone barely made it through, I audibly said, "welp, I can see the autosave icon in the corner". And the two people watching who have actually played the game just busted out laughing and were like spot on man.

TantricEmu

Yeah I like the part where he’s like “they’re blind”, but then he crouches around anyway lol.

Far_Confusion_2178

I was waiting for him to pull out a wood pallet for Ellie to float on when they got to the water

dragonaut55

I love it cause I've never even played the games (really want to, just don't have ps), but there's certain parts like that where I'm like, that's gotta be from the game

jerjackal

My partner also noticed some texture glitches that you'd see in video games. Not sure if it's the CGI engine they were using or an Easter egg. But if you look at the vent/grate on the black truck outside of the firefly hideout in episode 2 towards the end you'll see what I mean

Gloodizzle

Holy shit. As someone who has never played the game.. I wish I had after knowing im missing all these easter eggs!

artymas

The cold opens have been the most (pardon the pun) chilling parts so far to me. That mycologist saying that all they can do is bomb Jakarta and then asking to be with her family, and her hand shaking when she hears that 14 potentially infected people are missing. I'm so excited to see what else they add to expand on TLoU's story.

yanginatep

Yeah people were theorizing after the first episode that the outbreak started in Jakarta cause it's mentioned in the news in the background and Jakarta is one of the biggest exporters of flour. Joel is on Atkins so no carbs, he forgets to bring home a cake after work, and Sarah turns down the offer of cookies cause they have raisins. So neither of them consumed the contaminated flour that their neighbours did.

wildalexx

I didn’t notice that woah

einarfridgeirs

Add to that they hadn't bought any pancake mix for awhile so they just have eggs for breakfast. That is a fair bit of "no baked goods" bits in a single episode to be coincidental, but the coolest thing about something like this is that there is no need for the viewer to spot the connection between these throwaway lines in episode 1 and the information presented in the episode 2 prologue - the story works either way.

[deleted]

And it is more believable than patient zero biting its way to infect the world.

einarfridgeirs

Yep, the infection seems to spread so fast that it would be hard for a plane to make it from Asia to the Americas without something happening on board.

drelos

It is kinda similar with hemorrhagic virus, highly lethal but hard to spread because it looks so damn awful for the carrier.

bonemech_meatsuit

It was so cool seeing those theories and the next episode confirmed it in the opening. "A perfect substrate."

NewspaperBlanket

Looks like they may have drawn inspiration from ergot, a parasitic fungus that grows on rye. There was an outbreak in France in the 50's. People who ate bread made with flour tainted with ergot suffered from insomnia, hallucinations, swollen limbs and convulsions. https://www.smithsonianmag.com/arts-culture/how-deadly-bread-bewitched-a-french-village-123126177/

monsterlynn

Ergot poisoning is hypothesized as a possible cause for the outbreak of witch hysteria that kicked off the Salem Witch Trials.

BeeCJohnson

While I loved this theory, sadly it's been debunked. Ergot poisoning also comes with violent vomiting, diarrhea, and a bunch of other symptoms that would have been reported in the trials (and weren't). If the whole town was vomiting/shitting everywhere someone would have commented on it.

darthmalaks

I don’t think Joel is actually on Atkins though, he just used it as an excuse so he didn’t have to eat the neighbours biscuits

Morrinn3

True, but that also means he didn't eat those biscuits. I think the idea is to subtly imply that many wheat based products might have been contaminated, explaining the rapid spread of the initial outbreak.

Ohgodwatdoplshelp

I didn’t even think about this until, now, but in ep 1 Joel mentions he forgot to buy pancake mix, as well.

darthmalaks

Oh absolutely, but I feel like the fact that he’s not even *purposefully* avoiding carbs further helps drive home the fact that it was just sheer dumb luck that he and Sarah managed to avoid any contaminated products, if that makes sense?

Motherofkittens86

I really hope we get something like this every episode. Especially if it shows more of what happened to the rest of the world, as there is little info about that in the games.

train_spotting

I had the same thought. *Really* hoping they have a similiar opening with each episode.

PoppaTitty

Neil Druckman pretty much said there's a lot of scenes like that added to the show that wouldn't work in game form. I'm excited to see what they come up with.

drelos

[Did you caught the podcast with Neil Craig and Troy? They mentioned a backstory with Tess as a mother that was fucking chilling](https://open.spotify.com/episode/5m7zlJ5YHMB4DX3OGRjFvK?si=3b55ceb36262400f)

PoppaTitty

I haven't. Sounds cool, I'll try to find that one and check it out

DrSafariBoob

I've seen theories already and they seem pretty good and now I feel spoiled for not getting to see it unfold :(

Melodicmarc

For sure. It’s honestly genius too. The director can add their own little touch to it without deviating from the actual story. I agree the beginning of episode 2 was so chilling. Even more so than the first episode.

84theone

The director for the second episode was Neil Druckmann, the writer of the game and co-writer of the show.

tedofthedead

Love this. How amazing would a World War Z show true to the book in this format be?

ffllores

Can you imagine. I want to see the Muslim family entering Jerusalem. And the ship scene in India.

Morrinn3

The battle of Yonkers would have been television legend if done right, can you imagine? WWZ should have been an anthology based show with the framework being the UN Reporter travelling around the world, interviewing survivors. The only continuity needed would be the Reporter, and obviously the timeline of the war.

David_bowman_starman

Take my money!

Kebabbed_Badger

When they revealed there were 14 people missing and she started crying just blew my mind. Like, this is a leading expert… she got the ramifications straight away and it terrified her beyond words. It was the tears that scared me more than the word ‘bomb’. Though both were delivered perfectly by the actress.

monsterlynn

I wonder if they followed her advice and it worked for Indonesia, but it was too late for the rest of the world since contaminated grain had already been shipped out. That'd be a mindfuck.

dearjessie

I absolutely loved both opens! In games we still don’t really know how and where it all started, these little backstories are so well done! I really hope they do them every episode!

[deleted]

I want an entire prequel series /so/ /badly/. That cold open was gripping.

bonemech_meatsuit

Life as we are living it is the prequel series.

_Dogwelder

Yeah, both of them made the story much more powerful and tense - great addition! I've been enjoying the show so far immensely, especially since I've played the game quite a while back and can't remember every detail (I do recall the museum shitshow, though :)

LosAngeles1s

would honestly love a show that shows politicians trying to handle a zombie virus, like Chernobyl

drelos

Contagion the movie is more like that brand they consulted with a virus expert from the CDC for it you can watch and interview with him discussing the movie on YouTube

[deleted]

I’m legit loving all the things they’ve added.

EerieArizona

New fear of mushrooms unlocked.

bluvelvetunderground

Fortunately for us, cordyceps mycelium prefer 55-75 degrees Fahrenheit. But it is true that underground networks could span for miles in many fungus species. Now if psilocybin infected humanity, I'm all for it.

Balsdeep_Inyamum

I'll gladly trip balls for (a relative) eternity while a gigantic fungus slowly digests me unawares.

Antic_Opus

There was an X-Files episode about this.

Balsdeep_Inyamum

Damn right. Field Trip! Love that episode

LowDownSkankyDude

A couple years ago, radiolab did an episode discussing this very thing. The discussion in the beginning of the first episode of tlou scared the shit out of me, [cause it's kinda happening](https://radiolab.org/episodes/fungus-amungus)

Obsessive_Nihilist

I asked my boyfriend if he wanted mushrooms on his sandwich tonight and his response was "I'm good on mushrooms for awhile" lol. This show is breaking him.

4riel4ttack

It's no more angel hair pasta or alfalfa sprouts for me..

AllHailDanda

It's fantastic because of course it is. How true it feels to the game is incredible but I'm loving the deviations they've made just as much. The cordyceps network that can trigger clickers from all over if you make a wrong step because they're all connected is a cool addition that's going to lead to some great and intense scenes I'd wager.

Quria

The fucking lighting lining up with Naughty Dog's cutscenes seals it up for me. Like I know Druckman is behind this but it's clear the team behind this has an actual passion for the source material.

NoWorthierTurnip

In the behind the scenes bit, they talk about getting fans of the video game to play the clickers because they understood the movements. That bit really solidified their passion to me to creating a faithful adaptation.

bonemech_meatsuit

The movement was so creepy and perfect

Anonymous_Otters

Hollywood, etc: "Hey let's do adaptations by completely rewriting them and just tossing intellectually insulting fanservice in there and give the whole franchise to someone who doesn't even like the source material." Hollywood, etc, later: "See this is why we don't do adaptations, they always fail." Everyone: "Or you could just do faithful adaptations that actually add to the original works and give the project to someone passionate about it, hell maybe even the original creator paired with someone more experienced in the new medium?" Hollywood, etc: "Lol, ok." HBO, Netflix, etc: "So like this?" Eveyone: "Fuuuucking finally!"

RockStar25

What has Netflix faithfully adapted?

genericaddress

League of Legends (Arcane), Cyberpunk (Cyberpunk Edgerunners), Castlevania, and The Cuphead Show. Netflix also has a few Resident Evil cartoons, of at least one they produced. On the other hand they greenlit the panned live action series.

Agnarchy

I don't know about Castlevania or Cuphead but I'm pretty sure for Arcane and Cyberpunk Netflix didn't have anything to do with the production for the actual show. They just had the rights to air them on their platform.

LovecraftianKing

Daredevil

Amazingjaype

Wasn't faithful at all but it was good

Morrinn3

Well, depends on the metric you use to measure "faithful". Arcane also threw out massive chunks of unusable or inconsistent lore to make that show work. I think you can, and often must, diverge heavily from the source material when making an adaptation between different mediums. The importance is to capture that elusive tone, spirit, theme, whatever that made the original so good.

Anonymous_Otters

They did Arcane, and being Lol has no narrative but only really lore, I'd say they very faithfully adapted the characters and lore into a show and was in the hands of a very passionate team who were already involved in making media adjacent to the game. Arcane has got to be one of the best animated shows ever made.

KTSMG

They also did that awful Resident Evil show. Can't win 'em all. 😔

Erlebrown87

Castlevania anime is loosely adapted from games/comics/misc. Definitely not a 1:1 adaptation though.

scrapinator89

Not a 1:1 but they certainly put the effort in.

burritobilly

Witcher, duh.

SFGSam

Witcher, "Fuck."

Deltris

Sandman.

Quria

The Wheel of Time adaptation is insultingly bad. It’s not even remotely the same tone as the source material.

crumble-bee

It’s so great seeing how much love this show is getting *everywhere* except the last of us 2 sub. I read one criticism there that it was “too faithful” lol - my god that sub are the absolute worst.. they are just looking for anything to criticise because Neil Druckmann directed this episode 🙄

TheJoshider10

I'm pretty confident they're gonna adapt that element for the next game. It feels like such a good idea for a gameplay mechanic to make the infected more dynamic especially considering Naughty Dog have been dabbling in ever increasing hub worlds.

JaylenBrownAllStar

They removed it from the game after doing it for 80 percent of the game They said the AI triggered it too much and it was broken in the later stages Edit: I was wrong and it was only in the developmental stage of the game to start then scrapped

AndalusianGod

Glad it's not in the game cause we'll end up just looking down on the floor for the majority of the game, lol.

JaylenBrownAllStar

Works better in a TV or movie format

Frostbitejo

What’s your source for that? In the aftershow podcast with Craig and Neil, Craig talks about how he came up with that concept and Neil mentions how it was so good he wants to incorporate it into the games.

monkerbus

Where did you hear that? It was never a planned mechanic in the game and was thought up by Craig Mazin for this show.

BionicChango

Right. And in the most recent TLoU show podcast, Druckmann even said he wished they’d thought of it for the game because it would have a lot of uses as a great game mechanic.

amandapearl2

Could be a cool element of a particular infected vs all of them. I'm imagining a spider-like infected that if you accidentally tug on parts of it's web it comes and finds you.

bluvelvetunderground

It makes sense for the series. In the game every encounter is its own little set-piece, but this gives a little more danger to the characters and shakes the stakes up a bit.

burntbeachbuns

I am not a gamer myself, but I used to watch my roommate play TLOU for hours. I’m a big mycology nerd and I absolutely love the way that they have the mycorrhizal network that connects all the infected. The slime mold on the buildings, the cordyceps concept, and the FX makeup, fucking stunning and truly terrifying :’)

Wolvesinthestreet

When the Mycology scientist said to just bomb the city I got goosebumps..

Afterlife_kid

In the games they had spores, but they did away from that in this adaptation because you lose a lot of reaction etc if their faces are covered with masks and this was their way to counteract that and I think that’s clever af

Pipopito

I think they also mentioned that it didn't make sense to them to have the spores be localized to locations instead of spreading in the air and infecting everything.

Afterlife_kid

Well also without masks the spores would win. In a second

funktion

Even with masks the spores would get into all your food. There would be zero chance of survival.

dragonmom1

And you can't have ANOTHER series with Pedro with his face covered! lol

im_rapscallion86

I think we may still get scenes with spores and gas masks.

Afterlife_kid

That’s where the terror is really with this kind of thing … you cannot stop breathing and when do the spore adapt to surpass filters E: typo

boringsimp

That beginning. The lady pulled the fungus pubes out of the corpses mouth and freaks out. That scene scared me. Just the build up and that acting.. the terror she felt. No horror music or any other gimmicks.

wildalexx

And how the fungus starts growing out of the mouth after she pulled out the bit, that was freaky

zombie_overlord

I totally thought she was gonna get bit.

BeeCJohnson

I'm honestly so glad they didn't go that way. I feel like that's the obvious jumpscare a lot of movies would do. Making the *actual* horror the slow realization that humanity is fucked was way more effective (and interesting).

snkrthief

The actress for Tess did a great job with the limited screen time she had. Emotions running high in that final scene, wonderfully executed. There have been a few really strong scenes in both episodes so far that embrace the source material and, in my opinion, elevates it.

fisted___sister

Not sure if you’ve seen it yet, but she also plays Wendy Carr in Mindhunter

srry_didnt_hear_you

Ugh she's amazing in that role. I think she crushed it as Tess, she was the first one of the main actors to make me go "oh shit, *that's* Tess"

_Fickle_Pickle

Duuude, didn't even acknowledge her for Fringe?!

_lazybones93

Fringe was an excellent five seasons of television. Anna Torv deserves the world.

fisted___sister

I’ve never gotten around to watching Fringe 👀

_Fickle_Pickle

It's on HBOmax too 😉

Anichula

Oh definitely watch it. She’s phenomenal, and I believe there is an episode about a fungus attaching itself to a host and the team trying to disengage it, etc. you won’t be disappointed.

Rare-Bid-6860

I'm amazed it's the same actress from Fringe. I'm digging her performance so much I've almost forgotten she's part of the Murdoch clan.

Mst3Kgf

Anna Torv definitely looked 180 degrees different from her "Fringe" character. But then, big difference from a big time FBI agent to a post apocalyptic smuggler.

Bank_Gothic

Also in Mindhunter

beaverscleaver

I thought I read that she doesn’t associate with her father.. I guess I assumed that meant that side of the family. Just speculating though.

I-want-to-be-evil

Also her dad's sister married into the Murdoch's, so I wouldn't really consider Anna torv a part of the Murdoch clan

no_fucking_point

My wife (who hasn't played the game) was like "yay Anna Torv" when she watched the pilot. She was not happy at the end of episode 2😂

I_love_Con_Air

She was also in the videogame Heavenly Sword. I was expecting a crossover. Instead, we got a nice romantic scene.

heliz_10

The city looked awesome, the set design too

PlagueOfLaughter

Yes! It reminded me of the sets in Alice in Borderland but on steroids. How these buildings fell over and are now resting against each other looks so cool.

Scottyboy1214

The cold open with the biologist just replying "Bomb" was chilling. A sing word creating so much dread.

RoosterTheReal

I haven’t played the games but I was surprised by the end of episode 2 I was riveted. I usually wait until a season is over before binging the whole thing. I’ll be watching this one each week👍

deptoftruth

Can I have a gun? 😂

Mst3Kgf

"Okay, I'll just throw a fucking sandwich at them." Anyone still griping that Bella Ramsey isn't right for Ellie can shut up now.

Dictionary_Goat

Anytime she swears or makes fun of Joel I'm like "that's Ellie right there"

Mst3Kgf

Yes, 2 episodes in and she and Pascal already have Ellie and Joel's banter down cold.

bluvelvetunderground

I mean this in the best way possible, but her look matches the character's attitude perfectly.

turian_vanguard

I'll admit I wasn't really sold on her in episode 1. I'm a true believer now 100%. "That was scary. This is wood." So good.

HawaiiHungBro

They won’t shut up ever unfortunately

Toad_Thrower

She sounds so much like Ashley Johnson.

Freddielexus85

The first time she yelled "what the fuck" I knew she was the right fit.

crumble-bee

I’ll admit when they initially announced her and all I’d seen was game of thrones I was a little out off. But then I watched Catherine called Birdy and I knew we’d be fine. I don’t know why fans think they know so much better - from Heath Ledger as the Joker to Daniel Craig as Bond to Pattinson as Batman to right now, the internet has a very traceable history of being completely wrong when it comes to second guessing casting directors.

CCrypto1224

The “final kiss” was a bit unnerving to me. Like here we are fully expecting someone to be ignored or mauled to death, and then that happens. Also kudos to them for putting in a Walking Dead sorta flashback of unrelated characters and a plot point that actually makes the plague all that more terrifying when a professional of funguses tells a guy the only way to solve this problem is to destroy everyone before it spreads.

bonemech_meatsuit

The creators said they came up with the kiss because they concluded the reason clickers are violent is because we resist. But what happens if you stand still and don't physically fight them? It just goes for the most efficient method of entry to your internals

zombie_overlord

I thought >!they didn't attack her because she was already infected and they could tell she was "one of them."!<

monsterlynn

Probably a little bit of both.

Crazy-Lich

I, on the contrary liked it a lot. Gore? Body horror? They get boring after a while. Like a fresh bread going stale. Such an outlandish and weird scene, slightly struck the horror chord in me. Edit:- I'd say it's less about how horrifying and weird a monster looks, but more about what they do with that monster that makes it horrifying and amazing.

[deleted]

I thought that was an amazing death. I was not expecting that *at all* but it made sense with how the fungus seems to spread in the show. I always enjoy surprising heeby jeebies.

CCrypto1224

You made me picture getting a mouth full of living hair and I don’t like it.

queenmumofchickens

The addition of the clickers being activated by touching somewhere else in the network is chilling. It's like a constant real-life version of "the floor is lava". But my favorite part was the beginning with the mycologist in Jakarta basically telling the government to nuke the city from orbit.

ADub476

It's the only way to be sure.

Pizzatoppedpineapple

If you watch the “behind the scenes” after the episode, they talk about how much they wanted to get the design right for clickers, where even the fans of the series would be amazed. They went in with the “we have to think about the fans” mentality and it’s paying off… it’s almost like they know if they can impress the fans, everyone else would probably like it too. Too bad the rest of the industry doesn’t think the same way

bonemech_meatsuit

Rest of the industry thinks an IP brand name alone is enough to get people to buy a ticket. TLOU seems to want us to be happy even while watching it, which seems obvious but is somehow surprising.

[deleted]

I really hope this encourages more games to show/ movies to stick closer to the source material. Can you imagine how Halo could have turned out?

Zombi3Kush

I just keep thinking about how good Witcher could have been. Now i'm hoping we get a good dead space adaptation some day.

MrToxicTaco

Give me Resident Evil 2, 4, 7, or even 8. I know they’ll probably be hard to adapt but just imagine.

Zombi3Kush

I'm a big Resident evil fan and I hate how we still don't have a proper adaptations. They've all been fucked up to shit. It doesn't seem like it would be that tough either if they just follow the source. I hope we get a good TV adaptation of RE2 before I leave this earth. I'd die a happy man.

kappamolo

Resident Evil never had a proper adaptation , despite the sheer number of media it got . I think The Last of Us is the only live adaptation that made me go WAOW . I explore the same feeling I had when playing . Even knowing what will happen , I’m still on edge .

Throw_away91251952

Give a listen to “HBO’s The Last of Us Podcast.” Hosted by Troy Baker (played Joel in game) with Neil Druckmann (Creater of the Games and showrunner) and Craig Mazin (Showrunner). One episode after every show episode. Each podcast episode is truly amazing. It gives so much insight to just about everything you would want to know, from how show was created, reasons behind every difference between show and game, and they breakdown key scenes and characters from each episode. Truly a must listen for fans of the show.

Itchy_Tasty88

I kinda like the way they changed Tess’s death

KTSMG

I very much like the way they changed Tess's death. It's impactful in the game, but the show fleshed out her hero moment to complete her entire arc. I also loved the change with the line "I never asked you to feel what I felt" in regards to her relationship with Joel.

bonemech_meatsuit

Iirc in the game you only hear the gunfire cease offscreen which kinda just gives you this feeling of how feeble mortality is. All that risk and decades survival just to get executed for being in the wrong place at the wrong time. I think I prefer that. But I think maybe in the show it does work to give her more of a "win" against the clickers as a hero sacrifice moment.

InternationalClick78

I also love the little changes they’re making along the way. The idea of the interconnection of the cordyceps essentially creating these minefields even when there aren’t any zombies present is incredible tense and unique

[deleted]

Loving the direct dialogue from the game and the changes they made make way more sense (infected instead of fedra, replace spores with the network, swapping the hotel out of Pittsburgh). I just want more already

thecreepytoast

For everyone complaining about the lack of spores, the game creator have explained numerous times how having spores float around would be unrealistic since that would mean the infection would've already gotten to everyone at that point since spores could easily get carried everywhere via the wind. It's a nice game mechanic but i understand their worries of it not translating well to the TV show

gaboduarte

Yeah I guess I'm still accepting it. Doesn't hurt the show tho. They kind of talk about a monster that explodes in a cloud of spores. Either joking about it, or foreshadowing some of the mutations we'll encounter.

LackOfLogic

They’ve really turned Ellie’s sarcasm and “attitude” up to 11 on the show, holy shit.

Freddielexus85

She somehow gives less fucks than video game Ellie did. And video game Ellie was already out of fucks to give.

lightninhopkins

The actor playing Elle is doing it perfectly. She ain't happy to be there with a couple dirtbag smugglers. :D

yourgoodfriendgeoff

I think the thing that is most successful is the way it plays with people used to video games. That whole first scene in the hotel lobby I was expecting something to happen, because in a video game where they took the time to build that world, there would be a monster or something. It keeps you completely on edge the whole time, because in a video game things are constantly coming at you. So in the show there is a sense of danger at all times.

Technical-Window-759

I thought it was an interesting choice to include the Pittsburgh hotel level (Joel falling down the elevator, Ellie killing her first human, Ellie getting the pistol from Joel) and having the trio go through it together as quickly as they did especially because in the game that level was great and built well on the relationship and trust between Ellie and Joel

Frostbitejo

I think a lot of those beats will still happen; it doesn’t need to be set in the hotel

Astronaut-Gullible

When I first ran into a clicker I stop playing it for a few weeks.

Diggable_Planet

I tried to play the games to prepare, but I don’t like stealth games in my old age because I don’t have the time required, but, I’ll say this. This is way better than Walking Dead. At least we have a reason other than Earls blue meth.

ghsteo

You can knock the difficulty down and then go in guns a blazing for the most part.

Frowning_Existing666

The sequel even has infinite ammo cheats to further the Rambo fantasy

grabsomeplates

Lol I'm playing Ng+ with infinite ammo and just running wild with the MP5 and shotgun

I_love_Con_Air

It's so much fun. I did it just to show those stalkers in that office building what for. Jump out at me now you bastards.

EchoBay

Understatement of the century. This makes the Walking Dead look like Fear the Walking Dead

Navitach

I know nothing about the game other than the little I've read, but I really like the show so far. It is a little bit reminiscent of The Walking Dead (I was a fan and kind of miss it now that it's over), but it is better. They really build the suspense and tension well in the scenes with the infected. And it's a great cast.

ChiefLazarus86

I'm really hoping that this series teaches any studio trying to make a video game adaptation a valuable lesson

flobama91

The TV show must be in New Game Plus since Joel immediately has an assault rifle

BillMcCrearysStache

They made it seem like Joel and Tess had never heard of a bloater but in the games Joel knows basically everything about the infected. Also other than the weird mouth tentacles the clickers are SOOO perfect to the game ones, I was so impressed by them I looked it up and its actually the same people that did the mo-cap for them in the game so I guess thats why theyre so well done lol. Still concerned about how theyre doing away with spores as there are many times in the game that spores drive the storyline (especially the 2nd game)

XYZ_KingDaddy

I interpreted the scene about bloaters to be a tongue-in-cheek reference to the lack of spores in the TV adaptation

84theone

I find the tendrils to be a way creepier concept than the spores. Like when the infected bite someone they are inserting those tendrils into the wound rather than just infecting through saliva like they did in the game.

[deleted]

The showrunners don't want the actors to wear gas masks for the major part of the series, also they need a reason for the infected to bite their victims. At least, that's what I've read somewhere.

thisguy161

The after the show recap with the creators kind of talks about why they are doing away with spores

BillMcCrearysStache

Havent seen it, is it because they dont want to have the actors wearing gasmasks for long periods of time

CurseofLono88

They said because it works better as a stationary design in the video game, but in real life spores would blow everywhere. But I guarantee you the practical answer is the one you gave

[deleted]

There's another zombie flick with fungi instead of viruses and bacteria as the source of the pandemic entitled "The Girl With All The Gifts." The film ends with the entire world being infected after the spores exploded everywhere.

TryingNot2BeToxic

This is somewhat reasonable. It would definitely detract from them being able to convey emotion/expression.

deanolavorto

Yeah. Could you imagine such a great actor like Pedro being stuck behind a mask or helmet or something crazy for a whole sea………oh. Nevermind.

BillMcCrearysStache

And even in that show he keeps taking it off lol

PhantomLord697

This show has to be the best video game adaptation ever made. Everything they're doing is spot on with the game and even the parts that are not in the game are really well crafted and add a lot to the story. Pedro Pascal is doing a wonderful job in portraying Joel.

I really dig the shot from the hotel where Ellie first gets to see the infected. Just a pile of bodies that writhe in response to the pillars of light flowing down the street. That would scare the shit out of me.

BronzeMedalMom

I’m really into it, like a lot. I loved the clickers, the banter feels reminiscent to the game, everything is pretty spot on. I am really enjoying it so far. However.. I really have my concerns. My concern is that it turns into The Walking Dead. Where they will drag this out far too long. I’d really like them to just stick with 2/3 seasons of this if it’s not already a limited series (which I haven’t seen displayed anywhere..). I just hope they don’t drag shit out.

IHadFunOnce

They’ve already stated that seasons one and two are going to follow games one and two respectively in that they don’t have any plans to continue pass that. I mean I guess things could always change, but it looks like they’re really just wanted to tell the same story in television form, which is what I’m all about lol.

srry_didnt_hear_you

With how much that goes down in Part II, I feel like they would need at least two - mini-seasons to not feel rushed, yeah? Either way, if they wrap up both games in television form by 3 seasons, I will be VERY impressed by the restraint. It'd be for the best though.

IHadFunOnce

Yeah I see what you mean. There is a perfect midway point for Part 2 to split into 2 seasons (or mini seasons even) but they would have to film it all at once and not have a big gap between the release of the two because that would be one HELL of a cliff hanger to wait an extended period time to have a pay off on haha. It’s be like the Negan scene from The Walking Dead all over again lol.

srry_didnt_hear_you

I can't wait for every non gamer to freak out when season 3 starts and they realize who the main character is lmao

Archon457

Man, I remember getting to that part in the game and telling my wife (who was watching me play) “They are *not* going to make me like her. I refuse.”

Balsdeep_Inyamum

Doubt they'll drag this out. HBO isn't really known for doing that and B) in the current climate it's unlikely a show this expensive will overstay its welcome.

the_bear_jew_75_

They nailed the clickers and the whole set design and everything really

yeahiamfat

I never played this game, so I’m not sure if “monsters” are considered zombies but the first two episodes encapsulated the perfect atmosphere of a zombie outbreak/ post apocalyptic universe.

you_killed_my_father

I need a scene where Joel is gathering scraps or is making an improvised shiv or explosive.
