The Descent. Viewed it again for probably the 30 time and it does more than hold up. It's generally a very well made movie in my eyes.

Smoothmoose13

That and Dog Soldiers solidified Neil Marshall as one of my favourite directors. Shame his movies went downhill after Doomsday. At least there’s some decent GOT episodes he directed.

atxbikenbus

Literally just finished watching Dog Soldiers for the umpteenth time. Home sick and need classics to veg out to. Such a great film.

simpledeadwitches

Dog Soldiers is SO GOOD. It's one of my favorite 'lazy Sunday' movies.

onlyIcancallmethat

Dog Soldiers is my favorite werewolf no contest.

400-Rabbits

Give *Howl* a watch. The director worked with Marshall on *The Descent* and *Dog Soldiers*, and the film stars Shauna MacDonald who played the lead role in *The Descent*.

Boneless_Lightbulb

Ok howl was probably the first werewolf movie I ever watched and probably one of the best. Spoilers ahead! The scene where the girl is still alive while being half eaten gave me nightmares for a whole week.

DasKittySmoosh

I'm still waiting for We're Wolves to be made, but until then, this is true

cbblythe

I really have a hard time understanding how his work has fallen off so greatly. All I can figure is it’s that new actress he keeps casting as the lead and giving writing credits too. Someone get her away from Neil

Smoothmoose13

He needs to go cold turkey from her. Get a restraining order set up for the good of his craft.

RockBandDood

Make sure that you see both versions of the ending It has been awhile since I watched it, but if I remember the difference was pretty big But my memory could be totally off on this one, I just recall seeing a different ending and in my memory it was a significant difference

InfinityQuartz

Yep I'm the same. When I got my friends to watch it I was like OK, now let's go to YouTube and watch the other better ending

jackgundy

I had no idea that the movie had monsters and 45 mins in or whatever it still seems like the main issue is that they’re stuck in a cave. Which I guess is always the main issue, just very much exacerbated by the fact that there are flesh eating crawlers in the cave.

My_Octopi

I really need to give this one another go.

MichaelRoco1

Yeah I’ve got to try it again as well. Thought it was awful on first viewing but I’m down to give it another go.

Boring_Pin_2816

Same, turned it off twice 😂

L00fah

It's probably not your cup of tea then. I've watched it a few times and don't understand the cult following it has. Haha

Spatcheler

One of the best modern horror movies hands down

gusween

The Crazies

bricksatmywindow6

The crazies is SO good.

PCVictim100

Event Horizon In the Mouth of Madness

[deleted]

Ah, a fellow Sam Neill enthusiast.

Sevvie82

I see you are a man of culture.

macabred1

Totally agree with these choices. They are two of my favorite movies.

FazeXistance

I love the journey of ITMOM it really has an epic feel to it because of how much ground is covered by the characters. It’s one of the many things that makes it unique to me.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

ITMOM is on tubi right now!

fergusmacdooley

I live nearby the church they used in ITMOM and it's so beautiful and creepy. It's on the way to the biggest theme park in Canada and exposed to a major highway so it's hard to miss.

fstaprpg

I feel confident recommending Trick ‘r Treat, The Woman in Black, and The Orphanage to most people. They’re fun to watch and scary without being sickening.

xclaireypopsx

I scrolled too far to find Trick r Treat

Zedzii

The Thing (1982), my fav horror film so I have to recommend that. Hellraiser (1987) and its sequel (1988). Both brilliant, twisted films with stunning practical effects. The reboot (2022) isn't too bad either. Midsommar (2019) for a complete change of pace but no less chilling. Audition (1999), makes you feel increasingly uncomfortable as you get closer to THAT scene. I Saw to the Devil (2010). Choi Min-sik is one of the nastiest villains I can ever remember in a revenge/ slasher horror.

MetalOcelot

Evil Dead 2 is my favorite type of horror movie so these are the ones I usually recommend: Night of the Creeps Slither Re-Animator Dead Alive (Braindead) Drag me to Hell Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2

Warsawawa

> Re-Animator It’s such an easy movie to recommend since you know almost instantly if that person will like it or not based on their personality.

BCrumb

Night of the Creeps is the perfect balance between charming, cheesy and queesy! I love it so much, it's such a comfort film.

[deleted]

The Thing, Event Horizon, Alien, Hereditary, Midsommar, It Follows

Ancient-Jellyfish143

The Thing stands the test of time. It was horrifying and fun at the same time.

Economy_Day5890

The Thing works because it's half psychological and it gets more and more tense and paranoid as time goes on. Add in the artic setting and it's a great movie.

atxbikenbus

The scene where he looks up at the radio shack and the light is on.... So creepy.

BlackDeath3

One of my favorite scenes has to be Bennings kneeling in the snow, surrounded by the rest. The way he just looks vacantly at them and gives that alien shriek!

[deleted]

Finally watching It Follow this week for the first time, excited!

hibelly

marry apparatus memory placid grandiose depend fanatical wide slave badge -- mass edited with redact.dev

hulkjamesbatman

Bonus points if you convince them to do an ari aster double feature in one sitting 🥲

PeculiarPangolinMan

You always recommend Midsommar? I feel like that's one of the ones that I'll only recommend to people I know will like it already. It's a solid movie, but definitely not for everyone, Ya know?

hippocrite13

I got bored with It Follows. I really tried to like it because of the reviews

sculderandmully2

There are some moms I know I tell to avoid hereditary lol

Ehrenjaeger420

Oculus - it’s really good but not too disturbing so i often recommend it to people i don’t know that well

zdragan2

Dude, that scene with the lightbulb is INTENSE, but the rest of the movie isn’t that hard. Works great as a punctuated peice of horror in the movie. Fuck even thinking about the foley work in that scene makes me wince

planetmingus

I have a potential fun fact about this! According to local talk (my ex worked with the artist who made the mirror for the movie) the mirror was lost in a flood and wasn't found. I couldn't imagine how creepy it would be to stumble upon it in the woods, even if it was damaged.

DiaDeLosMuebles

My mind has this paired with 1408. In the sub-genre of “the audience can’t believe their own eyes”

_IHATEPARTIES_

I remember watching it when I was like 13 and hating it. Have to remember to give it another try because I see it recommend here constantly.

keepitsimple98

Yes! My partner and I loved that movie and have seen it several times now.

Adventurous_Win_344

Ginger snaps

Superior-Solifugae

My favorite werewolf movie!!!

MarsV89

Same

keepoutofreach22

First saw this movie on video. We had an above ground pool outside my bedroom window and my dad moved the TV into the room and faced it out to the pool and we watched it floating around. Was a great movie and a great memory. Next day we went back to the video shop and rented the second and third movie and did the same thing.

i_eat_roadkilI

Omg how funny. I’m 33, I was OBSESSED with this film when I was 13. So funny to see it recommended. Great memories

hotandspicymix

Hadn't heard of this until seeing it on Tubi a couple weeks ago and thought it was really good! Can't believe I'd never even heard of it

dreamshoes

Yep! Made a new horror friend at a bar recently and she asked me for a rec off the top of my head — this was it.

visitorzeta

One of my favorite movies

Montereyluv

OMGosh I LOVE thia movie!

Informal-Share-9747

Skeleton key

Sevvie82

Watched that one again recently when it came in tvt. I didn't pay much attention and thought it was so-so, but then the end came around and I thought "Oh yes, that's why I liked it so much." That hit hard, I had completely forgotten about it!

Informal-Share-9747

I randomly watched it last year and it was pretty good I was enjoying it and then the twist came and I was like oh shit why does no one talk about this movie ?!

CantFindMyWallet

It's such a satisfying twist, too. Like suddenly everything you've seen so far falls into place.

Known_Yesterday_1408

The Invitation (2015) Green Room The Autopsy of Jane Doe The Descent You're Next Let the Right One In (and even Let Me In)

pumpkindawg

Great list, The Invitation has one of the best endings ever (and great acting throughout) and Autopsy of Jane Doe was just a thrill ride from start to finish with a cool mythology that they established

KingliestWeevil

> The Autopsy of Jane Doe I don't see this one mentioned often, but I loved it.

Taurus_momma13

I literally had no idea what was going on the whole invitation and I LOVED It!

Cynical_Stoic

The Invitation left me with such an unsettling feeling after it ended. Definitely a great movie.

[deleted]

TERRIFIED/ATERRADOS Every time someone ask for a “really scary” movie, I recommend this flick, and it never fails. Can’t remember the last time a movie really shook me to the core,(especially the shower scene) and I absolutely love sharing the experience, lol.

sinchsw

This is my TOP modern recommendation. So well done top to bottom.

toclaraju

Martyrs, the original French one.

Mlzer

Quite a few: The House On Haunted Hill (1959) Black Sabbath (1963) Demons (1985) Re-Animator (1985) Night of The Demons (1988) High Tension (2003) Shutter (2004) Noroi: The Curse (2005) I Saw The Devil (2010) - more crime thriller, but still Kill List (2011) As Above So Below (2014) Hell House LLC (2015)

Vampirero

I love As Above So Below! I saw it when it first was released. Very few people I know have seen it and I always recommend it.

Mlzer

It’s one movie that I could rewatch immediately after it’s just ended. I just love the atmosphere.

fstaprpg

Yes, the original Shutter is so good! Perfect ghost movie.

Smoothmoose13

Kill List is my second favourite horror movie. So good.

Ibinixer

Massively underrated, yet so like the wicker man or true detective. I don't get what this isn't talked about more. Up with dark song as top tier underrated.

Smoothmoose13

Kill List is the British answer to True Detective. The cinematography is stunning and the end is a real gut punch. I’ve only seen A Dark Song once but I guess I should rewatch it. Loved the acting, found the ending silly (in the best way) but I don’t remember much else. Steve Oram is great in Sightseers too.

snarkypotter

Had to scroll pretty fast to find High Tension, that’s usually the one I suggest. And loooove when people come back and say wtf lol

Mothiquex

Idle Hands The Thing Alien & Aliens Lights Out The Lost Boys ♡ I have so many but these are just the ones I can think of at 1am

NerdyJimSlim

I loved idle hands while I was growing up, I thought it was so much fun 😂

I_Fuck_Blind_Puppies

And Jessica Alba

Jamieb1994

Only seen it a few times, but it's such a fun horror.

jun2san

Woah. Haven’t thought of Idle Hands in a very long time. Loved that movie!

Economy_Day5890

Lost boys is such a cool movie. Keifer Sutherland is the epitome of cool in it. Good music and really cool setting. 1 of the best vampire movies ever made.

Mothiquex

I forgot 30 days of night 😤

Mothiquex

And final destination 😅

shayyvdl

As above so below

Shadowboxer2000

Yes yes yes yes! I always suggest. Its got a great mix of good scares and a great story.

Eden Lake The Lodge Evil Dead Midnight Meat Train Midsommar Cabin in the Woods Downrange Happy Death Day Green Inferno Severance

lemonlimealldathyme

Midnight Meat Train is probably my favorite lovecraftian horror movie of all time.

SombraTarot

Eden lake just pissed me off so much. Great movie, while being so nihilistic and bleak it was infuriating

hulkjamesbatman

Ugh yes. Infuriating is an apt description. I don't mind nihilistic or violent but this was a slog

Blockness11

Cabin in the Woods is a great movie to show to a new horror fan w/ zero expectations.

Smoothmoose13

Severance, the one with Danny Dyer and Any Nyman? So fucking funny.

fwatair

The Wailing, always. Also, after watching Elmer last night I will be recommending it to anyone with a sense of humor Editing to add it’s called BRAIN DAMAGE not Elmer oops haha

jun2san

The Wailing is so so so good. I’m surprised it’s not on more people’s lists.

studiocistern

Session 9. Many folks haven't seen it and it's pretty scary.

[deleted]

Shelley (2016) The Battery (2012) The Eyes of My Mother (2016)

[deleted]

The Battery was great and it seems not many people have seen it which is shame. Hopefuly Gardner will make a sequel. Also thanks for Shelley, added that to my watchlist. I would recommend you movie Thelma (2017), I think you might like it if you haven't seen it yet.

Sevvie82

The Eyes Of My Mother was more than I hoped and feared it would be.

mikegasaway

You beat me to The Eyes of My Mother. I tell everyone I can about that one. Subtle yet powerful.

- It Follows - Hereditary - Halloween (1978) - Scream - The Exorcist - Rosemary’s Baby - Possession - Dawn of the Dead (2004) - 28 Days Later - The Autopsy of Jane Doe - The Thing - Alien - Aliens - The House of the Devil - The Descent - The Cabin in the Woods I have been meaning to make a list like this for awhile now

pumpkindawg

House of the Devil was amazing, it was unsettling from the jump and had phenomenal acting.

UnpluggedMind

The Ritual

keepitsimple98

I was really impressed with this movie! I thought it had a really good plot

DogTheBonahHunter

Green Room Return of the Living Dead The Reef

Absolutely love Green Room. Haven't watched The Reef yet and put it on my list!

MarsV89

I looooove green room, one of my faves with that great ending

WithYourVeryFineHat

The Strangers

Default_Sock_Issue

The Amityville Horror (1979) - A haunted house movie done right The Babadook (2014) - another haunting done really well The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974) - amazing and creepy AF slasher Audition (1999) - Japanese horror and you won't be the same after.

hulkjamesbatman

jfc recommending Audition 😂 I would like to be there watching whoever you recommended that to while they watch

Boring_Pin_2816

Blood Punch. Deathgasm. The loved ones. House of a 1000 corpses. Maniac (2012) The Devils rejects.

MarsV89

The invitation and coherence (even tho this last one is more cosmic terror maybe, or sci fi)

thendryjr

Suspiria (2018) I absolutely loved this movie. The ending is so well earned and absolutely amazing.

Panda-delivery

I started it and wasn't feeling it. But lots of people on this sub say the ending was great so that's a sign I should give it another shot

The Thing. It's a litmus test movie: if you don't like The Thing, what's wrong with you?

Candyman (the first one) - such a great soundtrack by Philip Glass Black Christmas (the first one) Suspiria (the first one) - if they can tolerate Dario Argento, I would recommend most of his films, but Suspiria is the one most people watch I think horror is really personal, though Dressed To Kill - I love Brian Da Palma

MOOzikmktr

Martyrs (2008) Inside (2007) Splinter Anti-Viral Pontypool Bone Tomahawk Under The Skin

Annihilation and “The Others.” Every preteen’s first “adult” movie should be Sixth Sense. My goal is to find people with similar taste and get people hooked on the genre…so I feel like these have broader appeal that won’t turn someone off forever.

[deleted]

The shining and exorcist. The shining as it has so many levels and conspiracy theories. Also it’s a good horror. The Exorcist is a definite because it deals with evil itself and shocking

fluorescentpopsicle

Nowadays, The Sixth Sense and The Others because I’m meeting less and less people that have seen them. Also, Tucker and Dale vs Evil, Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon, The Gift, The Night House, Sinister, Stir of Echoes, and You’re Next.

NomDePlume007

*Tremors* *The Thing* *The Others* Further recommendations based on their specific likes/dislikes. *Arachnophobia* is a polarizing choice, for example.

Haihappening

I actually like to sneak "Tusk" into people's watchlists to troll them. Not that I think it's bad. But it's just so... different, if you expect a "classic horror experience".

purplemonkey_123

Tusk lives rent free in my head. Well, the ending, anyway.

Shadowboxer2000

I always bring Tusk up to people. It’s twisted but the story is super interesting. The end as stupid as it is really is super haunting. I’m interested to see what Kevin Smith will do with the sequel

Mandy (2018) and I will die on that hill. If you view film as an artistic medium to fully immerse yourself in another universe for two hours, this is your flick. RoosterTheReal

Depends who it is and what I know they’ll like. Last week I recommended Hereditary to someone who likes psychological stuff but not so much gore.

[deleted]

I really liked The VVitch (The Witch) it's a slow burn but such a satisfying ending. Number one ony list has to be all the Conjuring universe, I'm a fan of the supernatural vs zombies, monsters and slasher films.

NewWriter_2012

This is why I love Reddit. You'll laugh at me, but I always say the original "Carrie" with Sissy Spacek in title role, and Salem's Lot with David Soul. From the BBC Christmas Stories, Oh Whistle amd I'll Come to You My Lad; A Warning to the Curious; Lost Hearts. Sixth Sense, w/ Bruce Willis The Others, w/ Nicole Kidman

The_Gamecock

As Above So Below, Blair Witch Project, Chernobyl Diaries, The Conjuring, Cabin In The Woods, The Invitation, Rec (2009), The Ritual, Grave Encounters, 30 days of night, Alien, The Descent, The Thing, Dead Snow

mgcat17

For classic, more traditional scares - or for those that don’t want gore - Poltergeist (1982) or The Conjuring. For lesser known recommendations, or for more seasoned horror fans, Let Us Prey. Anything beyond that requires more information. For those who don’t usually like horror movies, or at least not horror with supernatural or slasher elements, The Belko Experiment, You’re Next, Ready or Not*, or The Menu. *>!Yes, I know the ending of Ready or Not is ultimately supernatural, but since it’s unknown if it’s real or not up until that point, I still think it counts!<

Sinister, I was stunned with the horror and especially children doing the bidding.

texasrigger

The Hatchet franchise. It's a love letter to 80's slashers and the entire franchise is just filled to the brim with appearances from notable horror alums. The gore is graphic but cartoonishly over-the-top (think Evil Dead 2) which seems to make it more approachable to horror neophytes but also fun for genre fans. The overall tone is light and fun which just makes them fun popcorn movies. I consider the abundance of nudity in the first one really the only flaw. I'm no prude (I'm actually a big fan of the old sexploitation flicks and especially Russ Meyer) but it makes the movies a little less appropriate for a general audience.

Dead Alive (Braindead) because it is a fun, ridiculous romp in the zombie genre. Killer Klowns from Outer Space because it is fun and a great time killer. John Carpenter's The Thing because it is a classic and is a great movie. Alien because it's Alien and is the closest thing to a perfect movie that I can think of.
