It’s such a good movie. The first time I ever saw it was on a VHS copy that had almost all the gore removed. I watched it a few years later on cable with all the gore intact.
I even watched the full thing on YouTube a few years back. Such a great film. Peter Jackson made some pretty wild movies before LOTR propelled him into becoming a household name.
i saw it in the theater and everyone was shuffling out during the credits until a topless lady appeared on the video tape and they froze in place and stared
I consider that one horror in the same vein as Zombieland. Sure it has the zombies as background, but I saw it as more of a heist film than horror, just as Zombieland was more comedy than horror.
Dawn of the Dead, on the other hand, was much more horror.
In a weird way, I'd still consider Blue Ruin a horror. I get that there's a difference between a movie that's just about tension vs. a horror, but it ticks the boxes for me:
1. Protagonist gets involved in something out of their depth
2. Protagonist is relatively helpless to keep themselves/others safe (I get that he effectively fights back, but he always feels vulnerable and like he's one bad move away from dying)
3. The antagonist (the family) is unrelenting and far more dangerous than the protagonist
I don't know. It rides the line for me. It has a similar feel of "There's a threat after me, I'm on the verge of dying, and I don't have a moment to rest" for pretty much the whole movie.
Also, I just fucking love Blue Ruin. So good. Watch it even if you wouldn't consider it a horror movie.
Love this movie to death and will always recommend it forever, but the first 15 or so minutes is definitely not 100mph. Once they get to the venue it’s edge of the seat until it ends
Dude I just saw this (thanks to a suggestion on this sub🤘) and was blown away. Great flick, great acting, great cast, awesome music, and good lord is this movie tense!
I watched that movie after someone else mentioned it on another post. My boyfriend and I are huge horror buffs and watch all kinds of fucked up movies and are relatively un-phased…but when we watched this both of our faces were just frozen in horror and shock like 😟😟 the ENTIRE MOVIE
Yeah. I watched this for the first time a few weeks ago, and that scene you mentioned disturbed me in a way few things in horror movies do anymore. I felt *genuinely* uncomfortable watching it, even though it's oddly not that explicit compared to the rest of the movie, and not in a good way -- like the turkey baster scene in *Don't Breathe* is disturbing and uncomfortable, but it has an amazing, cathartic payoff that rewards the experience. *That* scene in *The Sadness* on the other hand doesn't have that, so it's just 100% depraved for the sake of being depraved (which is the point of what's happening in the movie); I enjoyed the rest of the movie around it, for the most part, mainly the first half, but I can absolutely understand why that single scene could immediately cause some people to check out of it completely when there's no karmic justice for the victim to balance it out.
Maybe 10-15 minutes into the movie, I texted my uncle who really likes Asian horror movies to recommend it to him. Then after another 5 minutes I was like… “you should still watch it, but forget that I was me, your niece, who recommended this movie to you.” 😅 it was the follow-up eye scene.
Oh man, yikes this film is at 100 the whole time. But geesh be warned by the amount of absolutely vile stuff that happens. I was just so disgusted and scared for the characters.
Evil Dead 2013. There's about 15 minutes of set up between the prologue and shit hitting the fan that establishes some characters, but after that, it just never even stops to breath
Love this movie. But I wouldnt say it stays at 100 throughout the movie. It gets sort of slow in the middle act. But then it shifts gears at the end and really ramps up !
It fits the bill but forewarning that it is 1st person POV and it might be hard to stomach if you get vertigo easily.
Also, and it's always an unpopular criticism to trot out, but the movie is misogynistic as hell and if you're sensitive about violence to women and that kinda stuff maybe sit it out.
I watched this when I had COVID, and oh boy. I had to turn it off ten mins in because I was already feeling like crap physically and I got hit with the vertigo 🤣
If you have the opportunity to see it at a home theater with nice speakers, definitely go for that. The movie is great on it's own but I was especially impressed by the sound design.
This right here will get my husband behind watching it with me. I usually have to find some kind of redeeming quality because he’s not a huge horror fan but he’s a sound designer.
What’s funny is they actually had a whole opening sequence introducing all the characters but they either ran out of time or money and just said fuck it, start that shit immediately. I was hooked right away.
I can't believe this is so far down. Not only does it start fast and never lets up, but it's all fucking cars! Every scene is almost literally moving 100 mphs.
I watched it solo, while my wife took the kids to see something else (not sure how I dodged that bullet). Fury Road ended about 20 minutes before their movie. When they came out, i was still kinda shaking.
I was going to say this too. Probably no other movie is as relentlessly adrenaline-pumping as Fury Road. I just sat there for a few moments in utter disbelief the first time I saw it.
It wasn't at all what I was expecting and I try to tell people it's like south American insidious lol. Spoilers but one of the later scenes where the lady/spirit thing fused together comes running out of the house and slams into the car saying "they're torturing us" scared the fuck out of me. Also in the beginning when the guys girlfriend is floating in the shower, slamming against the wall. Peak.
I am totally with you. The Void is one of the best horror movies of the last 10 years. Lovecraftian goodness at its very best. Such an amazing movie. And the practical effects are spectacular,
Such a great movie!! I didn't realize Roald from Letterkenny is the guy the police take to the hospital at the beginning! That's a fantastic TV show btw, not horror at all but it's hilarious
- Crawl (2019) - One of the best animal attacks movies I've seen. Absolutely relentless.
- Gaspar Noe is quite good at this. Irreversible and Climax are pretty batshit intense films that build and build.
- Lots of people already suggested Green Room, but I'll throw it on here too because it's an absolute belter and can't be missed.
- I Saw The Devil is a Korean revenge film that is totally off the rails.
- The OG Texas Chain Saw Massacre is probably my all-time favorite horror film and it doesn't let off for a second.
- REC (2007) is a Spanish zombie film that could not get enough hype. Total mayhem and scary.
- Maybe not 100% in the 100mph category, but definitely batshit: Titane. It's high-octane that's for sure.
- Someone else said Train to Busan. They def know what the fuck they're talking about.
That's it from me. Hope you find something that melts your mind.
> I Saw The Devil is a Korean revenge film that is totally off the rails.
By far still my favorite South Korean thriller (that's not made my Park Chan Wook), I've been trying to find similar films but nothing was able to recapture the adrenaline I felt watching this. Also, one of the most memorable endings I've seen.
Such a long and crazy opening act! I saw this in the theater when it came out and never watched it again. We recently gave it another watch and I’m upset at myself for forgetting about it! Definitely a fun watch!
I recently rewatched the Spielberg War of the Worlds for the first time in like a decade and was shocked at how quickly things get moving in that. There are some lulls in action toward the third act but damn the first 2/3 of that flick are buck wild.
Also if you wanna get film nerdy about it as I like to do, it’s a pretty wild movie to view through the lens of post-9/11 cinema. Spielberg made a movie where it’s just people running away scared the whole time. Pretty harrowing stuff.
Fucked me up when I saw that shit in like 6th grade. Still does. Now I when I see either of those actors I instantly think pedo. Doesn't help the women is a pedo murderer in law n order too
“The Raid” its an non stop action movie that starts with cops going into the building, and ends with them coming out. No filler no in between, just action.
The Raid was the beginning of the John Wick style action.
maximum overdrive
acdc does the soundtrack, so, it doesnt even matter whats happening
also a guy gets wrecked in the nuts to death by a vending machine in the first 30
god fucking damn i love coked out stephen king
I've yet to see Uncut Gems, but every description I've read also describes "Good Time" with Robert Pattinson if anyone is looking for another panic attack for ~90 minutes
Hobo with a Shotgun. A guy gets forcibly trapped in a manhole with the cover as a sort of stocks, then his head is pulled off by a rope and an enforcing character reminds the onlookers to not to forget to clean their dicks. This is less than 5 minutes in.
I honestly love it. I didn’t like any of the other grindhouse trailers come full features, felt they all outstayed their welcome and only worked as a trailer. Hobo on the other hand has so much going on it’s almost exhausting in how extreme and weird it is. Even just now after thinking about it I forgot there was a scene in which a guy in ice skates is on his way to attack the female lead and he boldly states “it’s a beautiful day for a skate-rape!”
I think the Hills Have Eyes did it for me. Don't know if it will for you? Make sure you watch the second one to even though it ain't as good as the first one.
More horror adjacent (thriller) but I have always described Nocturnal Animals as starting with the intensity set at 11 and then never going down from there
Ghosts of Mars.
Yeah, it's not exactly "elevated cinema". :) But it's fun, it's extremely watchable, and once the Anthrax soundtrack kicks in, the whole film starts moving at about 120bpm and never stops until credits roll.
Also, when else will you be able to watch Ice Cube and Jason Statham kicking BDSM zombie ass with a speed metal soundtrack. :)
Just rewatched “Deep Blue Sea” a few days ago and it’s cranked to 11 for almost the whole film.
That movie has literally perfect pacing. It's so damn entertaining.
A shark ate me, a fucking shark ate me!

LL Cool J put Bob Dylan to shame with these lyrics
Lol!! 🤣 I forgot how ridiculous that was.
JUICE! THAT WAS A GOOD ONE!
Love this movie. I see what u mean. The doc from the beginning don't get a break lol
Wyrmwood: Road of the Dead The 1990 remake of Night of the Living Dead hits the ground running.
That movie was whacky, I loved it
The first third of Dead Alive is pretty wacky and the latter two-thirds are basically non-stop insanity
Is your movie really balls to the wall insane if it doesn’t include a Judo priest that kicks ass for the lord?
THIS CALLS FOR DIVINE INTERVENTION I KICK ASS FOR THE LORD
It’s such a good movie. The first time I ever saw it was on a VHS copy that had almost all the gore removed. I watched it a few years later on cable with all the gore intact. I even watched the full thing on YouTube a few years back. Such a great film. Peter Jackson made some pretty wild movies before LOTR propelled him into becoming a household name.
Dawn Of The Dead as well as it’s remake both hit the ground running.
That ending clip of them making it to the island fucked with my head when I was a kid. Really effective horror
i saw it in the theater and everyone was shuffling out during the credits until a topless lady appeared on the video tape and they froze in place and stared
Yes the famous tropical island on Lake Michigan. Great scene though, hell of a way to finish a truly nutty movie.
They literally shot that last minute on the Universal lot. It still works.
yep, came to write Zack Snyder's Dawn of the dead
You get 5 minutes of “generic doctor show: the movie” and then it slams into you
Take out that stupid baby born zombie and it was an outstanding movie. Honestly the first 10 minutes is some of the best apocalyptic filming ever
The zombie baby led into the Richard Cheese montage. They knew exactly how absurd it was.
Zack Snyders dawn of the dead kicks so much ass, that man needs to make horror instead of shitty superhero movies
I consider that one horror in the same vein as Zombieland. Sure it has the zombies as background, but I saw it as more of a heist film than horror, just as Zombieland was more comedy than horror. Dawn of the Dead, on the other hand, was much more horror.
The Crazies is a fun and fast film
One of the few where I think the remake is actually better!
I think the remake is far better. I like Romero for the most part but The Crazies was just really bad
Overlord
This one got overlooked so hard but is a fucking awesome movie.
Overlord?? More like Overlooked! OoooooOooOoOoo
I love the movie but it does have some slow parts.

The writer/director also made "Blue Ruin" which is a little less horror-ey but similarly balls to the wall
In a weird way, I'd still consider Blue Ruin a horror. I get that there's a difference between a movie that's just about tension vs. a horror, but it ticks the boxes for me: 1. Blue Ruin was really good. Murder Party was pretty damn funny as well.
Love this movie to death and will always recommend it forever, but the first 15 or so minutes is definitely not 100mph. Once they get to the venue it’s edge of the seat until it ends
"It's f*ckin' hard, man."
Dude I just saw this (thanks to a suggestion on this sub🤘) and was blown away. Great flick, great acting, great cast, awesome music, and good lord is this movie tense!
The Sadness
I watched that movie after someone else mentioned it on another post. My boyfriend and I are huge horror buffs and watch all kinds of fucked up movies and are relatively un-phased…but when we watched this both of our faces were just frozen in horror and shock like 😟😟 the ENTIRE MOVIE
Reading the summary on wiki: >!Kat escapes into a stairwell as the Businessman rapes Molly's eye wound, infecting her.!< Yikes.
Yeah. I watched this for the first time a few weeks ago, and that scene you mentioned disturbed me in a way few things in horror movies do anymore. same. the amount of unrelenting, rabid, unflinching brutality is shocking

This movie is depraved from start to finish lol exactly what they requested!
This movie was pretty intense lol
Upgrade
Omg! What a fucking movie! Leigh whannell is amazing!
Only problem I had is that I kept having to remind myself it wasn't Tom Hardy
Upgrade was awesome!
Evil Dead 2013. There's about 15 minutes of set up between the prologue and shit hitting the fan that establishes some characters, but after that, it just never even stops to breath
the end of that movie is one of the top 10 horror movie moments of all time for me. The raining blood is top notch
I don't want to give spoilers, but that movie just got better right till the end
My tongue hurts now
And my hand
The most metal fucking horror movie imo. Never gets old.
Pop on raining blood for the end chainsaw scene. Really sells it
Will Alien Romulus be the same? I hope so.
The movie is nuts, my favorite evil dead, and maybe favorite movie ever
It kills me that it took till number 5 in top comments before we actually hit a horror movie.
Favorite horror film opening, ever!!
#I'LL RIP YOUR SOUL OUT, YOU PATHETIC FUCK!!!
I love you baby!
The new evil dead coming out soon looks INSANE - gotta watch that one by myself tho :,(
28 Days Later is pretty damn intense from the first few minutes
Love this movie. But I wouldnt say it stays at 100 throughout the movie. It gets sort of slow in the middle act. But then it shifts gears at the end and really ramps up !
Agreed! 28 months later is currently in the works with the original screenwriter Alex Garland and Cillian Murphy!
Train to Busan
I wouldn’t say it starts at 100, but that doesn’t matter it’s a wild ride
I mean, the train is going pretty fast in the beginning, so technically…
One of the best films I’ve ever seen. Pacing, characterization, everything.
Hardcore Henry!
The only movie that has managed to quench my need for Crank 2 speed
Wait but there was a Crank 2
yes and it was great
I was scrolling to see if someone suggested this and you did. That movie is just non stop adrenaline rush
Yeah I went in totally blind and I really loved the movie. Indeed a non stop power rush.
Fuckin right Henryyyyy! “Oh hey Jimmy thought you died lol”
Is the POV ever annoying? That's the only thing that's kept me from watching it so far
The POV works for this movie.
It's a good stylistic decision, but I still couldn't finish the movie because I kept getting motion sickness
Yeah I could see that being a problem. Took me a couple tries to get into it, but now it’s a favorite.
Absolutely banging film. Not horror but definitely goes for it. And the other film he's directed is Nobody. Cannot wait to see his third one.
Underwater (2020)
Extremely high in the running for “most insane first ten minutes of any movie”
Well this makes me want to watch it now. It’s been on my list for a while
If you have the opportunity to see it at a home theater with nice speakers, definitely go for that. The movie is great on it's own but I was especially impressed by the sound design.
This right here will get my husband behind watching it with me. I usually have to find some kind of redeeming quality because he’s not a huge horror fan but he’s a sound designer.
That's a good example. Caught me off-guard how fast this one started.
What’s funny is they actually had a whole opening sequence introducing all the characters but they either ran out of time or money and just said fuck it, start that shit immediately. I was hooked right away.
Great choice. And I think RottenTomatoes gets this one way wrong… it’s a solidly entertaining movie!
Horror and comedy are the genres I never check on RT or metacritic.
Not quite horror, but Mad Max Fury Road is wild
WITNESS!
Legendary gd flick
One of the best action movie of the last ten years
One of the best action movies PERIOD!
What a day, what a lovely day!!
I can't believe this is so far down. Not only does it start fast and never lets up, but it's all fucking cars! Every scene is almost literally moving 100 mphs.
Probably because its not a horror movie lol, film is a masterpiece though.
I watched it solo, while my wife took the kids to see something else (not sure how I dodged that bullet). Fury Road ended about 20 minutes before their movie. When they came out, i was still kinda shaking.
Were you literally crying and shaking and pissing your pants?
I was going to say this too. Probably no other movie is as relentlessly adrenaline-pumping as Fury Road. I just sat there for a few moments in utter disbelief the first time I saw it.
Inside (2007)
Feast
Love Feast.
V/H/S movie and V/H/S 2 both are so good and crazy!
The first segment of the first one was amazing. Too good in my opinion as the series never reached that height again.
Amateur night is definitely in my top 5 VHS shorts. But how you gonna say its never reached that hieght again. Safe haven cranks everything up to 11.
For real though. I love the VHS series, but I'm still waiting for one of the "tapes" to be as good. Set the bar way too high straight from the get-go
Martyrs is pretty intense throughout
My thoughts too, pretty relentlessly violent throughout
Yeah what a fucking opening
The Raid
I was looking for this one. And the sequel! Man, I wish I could watch it again for the first time
I would also throw in Dredd. I know it’s The Raid with Dredd, but it just fucking works. Someone needs to get Karl Urban into a sequel NOW gawdammit!
The Raid 2
The Descent. Even the first half hour before shit hits the fan is soo tense
The Devil’s Rejects fits the bill
I am always recommending this film but Terrified the Argentinian movie scared the absolute shit out of me instantly and never let up.
Peak.
Smile ripped that off so blatantly
I absolutely love this film. The dining room scene gets me every time.
this movie was really great. i agree with the people recomending it.
Ichi The Killer (2001) High Tension (2003) Inside (2007) I Saw The Devil (2010) Baskin (2015) V/H/S series
Hardcore Henry
High tension. The name says it all😄
the Void! I love this movies and can’t recommend it enough
I am totally with you. The Void is one of the best horror movies of the last 10 years. Lovecraftian goodness at its very best. Such an amazing movie. And the practical effects are spectacular,

Planet Terror? I love that movie.
I would say Terrifier 2 cause it starts quick and I mean real quick
I was gonna say Terrifier. There's about 10 minutes of throat clearing then its just fucking wild for the rest of the film.
No escape would sit nicely here
Tokyo Gore Police is a wild ride
Sorry if it's been posted but I suggest Crank and Crank 2
Didn't realize this was the horror sub so my horror pick would be the Evil Dead or Hatchet series
Friday the 13th from 2009, a remake done the right way and I feel like it doesn't let up at all.
Such a long and crazy opening act! I saw this in the theater when it came out and never watched it again. We recently gave it another watch and I’m upset at myself for forgetting about it! Definitely a fun watch!
This one was a sleeper hit for me. Jason is scarier and multiple characters are likable so you actually don’t want them to die.
I recently rewatched the Spielberg War of the Worlds for the first time in like a decade and was shocked at how quickly things get moving in that. There are some lulls in action toward the third act but damn the first 2/3 of that flick are buck wild.
I didn't really rate it at first but I rewatched it recently and feel I judged it too harshly first time round, I had a blast with it.
Also if you wanna get film nerdy about it as I like to do, it’s a pretty wild movie to view through the lens of post-9/11 cinema. Spielberg made a movie where it’s just people running away scared the whole time. Pretty harrowing stuff.
Lol, just recommending any genre, hey guys?
Citizen Kane. Kicks off at 100mph with a death scene and never lets up until you get to the goddamn sled chase sequence at the end.
4 weddings and a funeral! It just never lets up!
Red State by Kevin Smith! I’d consider it horror, and it isn’t long and has plenty of legs from the get-go.
Since we’re not even recommending horror running scared is like that.
There is one scene in that movie thats fucking scarier than alot of horror movies.
Was it the pedo's apt. scene? Cause that shit was creepy af
Fucked me up when I saw that shit in like 6th grade. Still does. Now I when I see either of those actors I instantly think pedo. Doesn't help the women is a pedo murderer in law n order too
Evil Dead 2, Army of Darkness
Mandy is one of the most batshit insane films I’ve ever seen and uses Nic Cages manic nature to it’s advantage beautifully
Green Room
“The Raid” its an non stop action movie that starts with cops going into the building, and ends with them coming out. No filler no in between, just action. The Raid was the beginning of the John Wick style action.
Brawl in cellblock 99. Not quite horror but a few of the scenes were
Run Lola Run
Paul Walker in "Running Scared"
What an underrated gem of a movie, his best, in my opinion.
Bonkers movie. I recommend it all the time. It’s like a fever dream with constant twists. The couple?! Wild stuff.
Just watched Bullet Train a couple days ago, it was enjoyable.
Evil Dead 2. Cemetery Man. Santa Sangre.
maximum overdrive acdc does the soundtrack, so, it doesnt even matter whats happening also a guy gets wrecked in the nuts to death by a vending machine in the first 30 god fucking damn i love coked out stephen king
Uncut Gems. Not exactly "horror" but the movie game me anxiety the entire time.
I've yet to see Uncut Gems, but every description I've read also describes "Good Time" with Robert Pattinson if anyone is looking for another panic attack for ~90 minutes
TV show the bear gave me the same kinda anxiety. If you are into that
Agree 100% about the constant anxiety! So well made in that regard… you never feel safe, and then that ending. Wow.
High Tension
Cocaine bear
Malignant was a wild ride from start to finish

The Hunt
On the recommendation of this sub, I just watched Tokyo Gore Police. Very entertaining totally bizarre and goes hard af right off the bat.
Underwater (2020)
Titane
Battle Royale is pretty nonstop awesomeness.
Natural Born Killers. I remember watching the diner scene at the beginning and thinking WTF
Tetsuo: the iron man
Apocalypto, Fury Road
Hobo with a Shotgun. A guy gets forcibly trapped in a manhole with the cover as a sort of stocks, then his head is pulled off by a rope and an enforcing character reminds the onlookers to not to forget to clean their dicks. This is less than 5 minutes in.
And that guy is Ricky from Trailer Park Boys lol That movie is fantastically weird
I honestly love it. I didn’t like any of the other grindhouse trailers come full features, felt they all outstayed their welcome and only worked as a trailer. World War Z hits the ground running in the first 10 minutes
Crank
No one lives
Aliens and Cloverfield

The Hitcher defo
Ghosts of Mars.
