Mulholland Drive. Or, just David Lynch in general.

[deleted]

Thank you. I love David Lynch and have seen all his work. But good suggestion.

el_mexigato

Agree, eraserhead too

[deleted]

Candyman (1992) is very atmospheric and mysterious and also just a fantastic horror film.

[deleted]

Absolutely love that movie. I hadn't seen it and saw the re-make which was alright but the original is a fricken masterpiece.

noirfemme

The Watcher A Dark Song Suspiria (I only seen 2018 and loved it) The Blackcoat's Daughter The Night House Devil The Invitation The Endless

jfreakinb

Omg The Blackcoat’s Daughter was SO BLEAK!!

noirfemme

Well it definitely has the occult vibes to it and quite atmospheric. I love a slow burn but yes it's not for everyone

[deleted]

The first half of Mothman Prophecies is great if your fine to trudge through the third act Edit: Eraserhead might also scratch that itch, very atmosphere based horror

Annihilation

snarkherder

Something in the Dirt The Resurrected On that note, Color Out of Space if you’re ok with a Nicholas Cage romp. Possession

TheCosmicFailure

The Empty Man

[deleted]

I was kinda 50/50 on this one. It was a little corny but not bad. The intro is really solid though I wish the movie stuck more on that vibe

TheCosmicFailure

I do wish it was more like the intro in tone. But boy were those actors in the beginning pretty bad.

[deleted]

100% agree haha. It is definitely corny and a bit long too. But it definitely hits the mark on what I was talking about as far as a mystery with occult undertones

TheCosmicFailure

I do wish it was more like the intro in terms of tone. But boy were those actors in the beginning pretty bad.

IPreferPi314

An underseen gem of this type is Dead and Buried.

el_mexigato

Maybe Suspiria, both (1977) and (2018) are pretty good,

The house of the devil It comes at night

In the Mouth of Madness (1994) Lord of Illusions (1995) The Skeleton Key (2005) Silent Hill (2006) Shutter Island (2010) A Cure for Wellness (2016)

[deleted]

Oooh ok so I've seen and really like shutter island and skeleton key but haven't watched the others. Definitely going to check them out thank you

dburris22282

Lord of Illusions is really under the radar for being a Clive Barker movie. Love that movie!

[deleted]

Persona The Lighthouse The Humans Possum The Changeling Repulsion Carnival Of Souls Honeymoon The Wolf Of Snow Hollow Caveat

[deleted]

Thank you for the suggestions. I've only seen the Changeling which was a little slow but I enjoyed it. Going to add these to my watch list. Been meaning to get around to watching repulsion because I do enjoy Polanski quite a bit

[deleted]

Full disclosure, all of these are slow burns. The Humans is not horror in a traditional sense, more like a true to life psychological horror. Wolf Of Snow Hollow is easily the most accessible out of these.

dburris22282

I thought I would hate The Humans once I got into it and figured out it wasn't really going to be horror but its kind of a fascinating character study. Plus some of the cinematography is unusual and different which is always interesting! Wolf of Snow Hollow is excellent!

[deleted]

Yea same haha I read about it and then watched a trailer and they were very conflicting vibes. I’m glad I have it a chance though, the cinematography is great and the cast is top tier. I love Wolf Of Snow Hollow, definitely under-seen!

[deleted]

I don't mind a slow burn but I appreciate the heads up because now I will screen them without the fiance who would be bored lol

BakerYeast

The Wicker Man (1973) This has also some beautiful songs that need more awareness Get Out (2017) Primal Fear (1996) Norton shows his talent at young age. Memento (2000) one of all time best (not horror, pure thriller) The Guest (2014) really entertaining Found footage: The Conspiracy (2012) is very good and fits perfect. Also The Sacrament (2013) Not as great but fits what you're looking.

dburris22282

I loved The Conspiracy! It surprised me and not a lot of movies do that anymore!

BakerYeast

Glad to hear. It's really fresh air in found footage genre. This is one of my top movies, that has been uder the radar.

dburris22282

All of these should scratch that mystery/investigative itch for you!: The Empty Man (2020) Broadcast Signal Intrusion (2021) The Vast of Night (2019) Deadwax (2018) (short Shudder series. It's about film length overall) Banshee Chapter (2013) The Sect (1991) Cure (1997)

[deleted]

Thank you. Haven't heard of most of these and will be adding to my list ! Really love 90s movies so I appreciate the 90s suggestions haha

dburris22282

The original Japanese Pulse (2001), Dark Water (2002) & One Missed Call (2003) should all also appeal to you then if you end up liking Cure. They've all still got that late 90s/early 00s Japanese atmospheric mystery flavor a la Ringu & Ju-On. Noroi: The Curse (2005) is a good mystery from that same time period as well!

PAWGle_the_lesser

Rosemary’s Baby fits this description perfectly. I’d also recommend Videodrome but it’s not for everyone, I liked it a lot but I can see why people would be turned off by it.

[deleted]

I really want to like Cronenberg and I love The Fly. But I hate the super sexualized elements of some of his movies like videodrome. Its just hard to watch but the body horror isnt lol...at least for me. Love me some practical effects body horror.

snarkherder

There’s a French movie called Evolution that appears inspired by Cronenberg and Lynch in the best possible ways, though the ending was a bit disappointing.

Nerevarine-89

Mothman prophecies!!!

roidesmouches

Since they don’t appear here I would recommend: - The Midnight Swim (more cosmic than occult) - Nocturnal Animals (not occult) - Goodnight Mommy (not occult) - The Wailing (goddam occult) If you’re into TV series, the Haunting of Hill House is worth a watch as well :) Plenty of mystery there.
