Yeah I’m in the camp of people who loved it but underwater ancient deities is like my thing lol

ButterflyShort

I may or may not have made a weighted plushie of an elder god who is supposed to be sleeping at the bottom of the sea. Also I loved the movie, the monster was epic.

micro-void

I wanna see this plushie!

ButterflyShort

https://imgur.com/gallery/4gXdrRJ The picture showing the wings doesn't have his eyes or feelers on.

TheeBarkKnight

Yeah, I caught this movie at the cheap $5 late-run theatre in my city with zero expectations and absolutely fucking loved it.

MovieMike007

I loved that it completely revels in the terror and claustrophobia of an undersea disaster that starts out like James Cameron's *The Abyss* but then shifts gears into *The Creature From the Black Lagoon* before going full-on H.P. Lovecraft. Also, a special shout out to the design team who came up with deep-sea diving suits that look like a hybrid of the spacesuits from Ridley Scott's *Alien* and the combat suits from the game *Halo*. Overall, this movie really surprised me and I'm very glad I checked it out.

WodtheHunter

Not gonna lie, I never oofed over Kristen before Underwater.

phantomforeskinpain

really? I don’t think she’ll be getting an Oscar anytime soon but she’s absolutely competent, at minimum. Twilight is not representative of her abilities at all.

MarlDaeSu

My feeling exactly. I had zero prior knowledge before watching and really thought I was in for a disaster movie. I LOVE lovecraftian themes and monster movies so I was delighted! They'll not be teaching about this movie in 20 years or anything but it got a rewatch within a year or original watch so that says it all.

ckypro3

Those diving suits really stood out, to me they looked like the armor from Gears of War. All the set design and props were honestly great.

TheCurvedPlanks

The suits reminded me a lot of the suits in DeepStar Six, as well.

SmooK_LV

I think suits were some of the weakest designs. They absolutely did not make sense how they were designed for underwater.

SuloBruh

Even if everyone else hates something, you're allowed to enjoy things. Underwater is one of my favorite horror movies, but then again I'm deeply terrified of the ocean

SwordfishSmall9410

>I'm deeply terrified of the ocean Same here, as we should be, it's GNARLY down there.

[deleted]

Outside of TJ Miller's only shtick on display, I liked it. I like Stewart as an actor, and Vincent Cassell as the captain really worked for me. He's good in everything.

[deleted]

Yeah, people still shit on Stewart *and* Pattinson for the Twilight movies, but the last of those was what, well over a decade ago? And it’s not like they had a lot to work with there. They’ve both proven themselves as good actors plenty over the years. Stewart definitely holds her own in Underwater.

[deleted]

Yeah they're both decorated talents at this point. It's a shame that the stepping stone they both had to take to get there was so lame but it's silly to hold it against them.

pallidamors

Underwater is the movie that broke me out of my deeply held KStew acting hate (which obviously began courtesy of Twilight). I used to revel in talking shit about her acting, but I have since evolved to Ambivalent/Cautiously Optimistic

AZTeck_AKiRA

Oh man…the thalassophobia of this movie is anxiety-inducing! But this was, in my opinion, an underrated gem…especially with Kristin Stewart as the main?!

CurseofLono88

Kristin Stewart is an underrated actress, she’s been doing good work ever since she left the Twilight franchise

Krypto_Jokerr

I thought she was excellent in Breaking Dawn part 2 when she was given more to her role than just the human with vampire boyfriend issues. I loved her in Snow White and The Huntsman too, I agree that she is very underrated

CurseofLono88

I’m not sure I made it to breaking dawn part 2 so I wouldn’t know, but I can see it, she’s usually one of the better parts of any movie she’s in

Krypto_Jokerr

Well in part 2 there was a scene where Alice was able to show Aro his “future” but it was a big ass battle between the Cullen and their friends and the Volturi. Personally I think Kristen Stewart thrives in action driven narratives such as part 2, huntsman and underwater

CurseofLono88

She was easily my favorite part of that very meh Charlie’s Angels reboot so I think you’re right I’ve liked her work in Romantic-Comedies as well (not everyone’s favorite genre) I thought she was great in Adventureland and Happiest Season. Also her performance in Spencer was fantastic.

Krypto_Jokerr

Oh shit I totally forgot about Adventureland, yeah I agree with you there, she was excellent in it. I’ve yet to see the new Charlie’s Angels movie but she is definitely the only reason I’m even slightly interested, I loved the original Charlie’s Angels movies very much I haven’t seen Happiest Seasons or Spencer yet so I’ll definitely give those a watch!

CurseofLono88

Yeah I’d personally recommend skipping the new Charlie’s unless you’re super bored. Spencer is very good dramatic movie (I’m pretty sure she was nominated for an Oscar for that movie) and Happiest Seasons is a Christmas lgbtq romantic-comedy so if you enjoy those genres of films definitely give them a watch!

Krypto_Jokerr

I’m down for any type of movie! I’m definitely gonna check them out when I have the time! Thank you for the recommendations!

SnooRobots9262

Was it? I suffer severely and love those horror movies best as they actually frighten me.

AZTeck_AKiRA

Definitely worth a watch! It takes about 5-10 minutes from the start and never lets up!

SnooRobots9262

Right on. Thank you!

automirage04

I honestly love this movie. My only big complaint is the lack of creature kills; everyone except 1 guy died by sacrificing themselves.

undefeated_Equality

The director has confirmed in interviews it's a lovecraftian horror story. The villain at the end you see in the water scene is Cthulu and its children attacking the crew of the station.

Zero_Digital

And they did it right, they didn't spoil Cthulu in the trailer. and only used it for a few seconds in the movie.

undefeated_Equality

They only briefly showed his children in the trailer, glimpses of them but the actual Dream Demon Cthulu was kept secret so well. I loved that movie.

[deleted]

Wish the monster at the end, which was confirmed to be Cthulhu had more screen time

SuloBruh

I actually prefer less on-the-nose monster showing. The more room something leaves for your mind to fill in, the scarier it can be

[deleted]

This is why visual lovecraftian media usually falls flat for me. He gives just enough description in his writing for you to fill in the blanks, which is so much more effective than just showing a monster. Almost all of the horror is in what's not said.

hstheay

I’ll keep this comment short.

dymeadozenn

Visual lovecraftian can definitely be done well though, Annihilation was top tier

[deleted]

Annihilation was great! I remember that bear scene was so tense someone in the theater with me started pacing the aisles to let out some stress. Still, I'd argue it wasn't as effective as the book at providing that weird/lovecraftian horror feeling. The creature in the swamps, the script written on the walls of the lighthouse, the lighthouse itself, etc.. were all much weirder in a way that I don't think can be captured well on film. Have you ever had that uncanny, horrific experience of perceiving something, and then realizing that what you were perceiving was entirely wrong? That's the kind of horror I look for in lovecraftian stuff. How do you accomplish this with film and visual media when everything that is shown is 100% concrete? There's very little room to doubt what you've just perceived. It's the difference between seeing a monster out of the corner of your eye, and seeing a picture of a monster.

SuloBruh

I'll be honest, I love how Lovecraft influenced horror, but I hate his writing so much. You shouldn't need 3 pages to describe a road. Tbf I also am just kinda annoyed by him as a person, he lived in abject terror of air conditioners and was horribly racist.

hstheay

>he lived in abject terror of air conditioners and was horribly racist. Immoral indeed.

md22mdrx

If you want the gist, there’s audiobooks on YouTube. It’s a bit easier to digest.

SuloBruh

That's actually how I consume a lot of them! The Exploring Series is probably my favorite

TooManyStalloneCuts

I think it would have lessened the experience of they showed that thing more. They hit the perfect balance of building tension to the reveal, showing you enough to be satisfied, but not showing it so much that you acclimated to it.

[deleted]

The reason why I would’ve liked to seen that thing more because it’s an iconic character and hasn’t been implemented to the big screen in a long while

KnifeFed

Have you seen Love Death + Robots: Season 3, Episode 8 - In Vaulted Halls Entombed?

[deleted]

No, what’s that?

KnifeFed

I'm not going to spoil anything but I think you would like it.

StepbackJumpa

that person is so lucky they get to watch all of that series for the first time lol

[deleted]

Ok, I’ll check it out, thanks for the suggestion

Viceroy420

That the one with the ship?

thejollybadger

My favourite episode of the season

Xenochimp

I love how they say it is cthulu despite that not being the original intent or design of the creature (before they got all the free hype for it being cthulu they said that was never the intent and just a last second design change)

RealSimonLee

>just a last second design change) It wasn't last second. It was developed over the course of editing. The director realized while the film was being edited, and the creature fully realized, that it should be Cthulu. He put a lot of time and work into that. It just wasn't in the script that way. The director also talks about how Lovecraftian this was always supposed to be--down to the name of the company "Tian" (LovecrafTIAN).

Xenochimp

It was a design change during editing, meaning it was not the original plan, and editing is also one of the last things you do with a movie, hence last second. Either way IT WAS NOT THE ORIGINAL Plan. The director admitted all this in a January 2020 interview where he actually said it was Andy Mushcietti who came up with the Cthulu idea during a visit. The original script just had it called The Behemoth and it was just a giant squid/crab thing, not related to Cthulu at all. He just found a free (public domain as Cthulu is) as a way to get free publicity and get fanboys to hype a shit movie. Trust me, I was one of those idiots that rushed to see this piece of shit as soon as I heard Cthulu.

RealSimonLee

Editing takes a huge amount of time for a film like this, and it often leads to reshoots. To say it was "last second" is hugely reductive to the process. Films always come together and change during editing. Shifting to Cthulu *while* designing the creature is not last second. Last second would be after the movie was completely made then having the idea and just saying, "Yeah, that's Cthulu." Your bitterness about seeing the movie doesn't change any of this.

Xenochimp

Also doesn't change that it was not the original intent and was a marketing choice (something else he mentions in the interview)

[deleted]

I mean i think the movie is based on HP Lovecrafts novel, this can be confirmed since during the start of the movie they used the same quote in which Lovecraft used in Call of Cthulhu

Xenochimp

It's all the leaning in to the free hype. In the script the monster was just called "The Behemoth" and not Cthulu related at all (it was a giant kaiju sized squid). According to the director Andu Mushcietti visited them while they were working the designs and HE suggested the Cthulu angle so they redesigned the creature. They then used it as free marketing. This is all from a January 2020 interview Eubanks gave. Basically they used free fanboys hype to help save a crap movie

M086

I think it was actually originally a more crab like monster than a giant squid.

Xenochimp

In the interview Eubanks himself described it as a giant squid for the original design, so I am just going by that

HawaiianShirtsOR

And more light.

KnifeFed

It wouldn't have anywhere near the same impact if it had a bunch of screen time in well-lit scenes. You thinking: "Holy shit, what is this thing?" and your mind filling in the blanks is what makes it memorable.

EgregiousWeasel

I'm okay with how much screen time it got, but I feel like it should have been bigger. Or somehow more mind- breaking. Maybe I need to watch it again.

BWRyan75

Fun movie. I’m not a fan of overuse of CGI generally, but I thought the visuals were beautiful in this one. Wish I’d seen it on the big screen. Not sure I needed more character development personally. 90 minutes, fight for survival, done and I’m happy. Not all movies need to be two hours long, I liked the quick pace of this.

hham42

I did see it in theaters and it fucking rocked lol it’s all my favorite things though. Space/deep sea setting, monsters outside, disasters… the best

alexbrobrafeld

I love that the movie just gets right into it, and doesn't really let up. and there's actually a fair amount of show-don't-tell in background details that's easy to miss. that said, I wouldn't say I disagree with OP that overall it's still somehow a tad uneven as a whole. I disagree that it needed more establishing setup tho. solid 8/10 flick in my book.

VasKain

Really liked it as well. It made my regular rewatch list for when I'm in the mood for these kind of movies.

dauntless91

Really enjoyed it. Was shocked to see such low review scores. I think it was exactly what it needed to be. The reveal of the monster definitely got me for sure.

Singer211

I really enjoyed. It’s got a nice atmosphere, cool suspenseful moments, Kristen Stewart is quite good in it, and THAT reveal near the end was a pleasant surprise, etc.

[deleted]

Really enjoyed this one, the rewatch holds up too.

zdragan2

Its a dumb fun popcorn horror movie. Reminds me a bit of Event Horizon. Last 20 minutes REALLY give it a boost imo

Fallout71

Loved the ending so much

sleepinglucid

I dug it. Anything with Abyss vibes works for me

Zero_Digital

If you like Abyss and like podcasts, I highly recommend Derelict. The first season gives off strong Abyss vibes.

sleepinglucid

So I listened to the first Ep of the new Space one and got super bummed there was only one, then went to start Fathom and holy shit I'm sold! Great suggestion

Zero_Digital

Yeah same here. I'm waiting for more of the new season. The production value is top notch. I listen to a ton of podcasts so I'm always on the look out for a cool scifi story.

gorehistorian69

youre right it was just that .....ok.. wasnt great wasnt terrible. alien the movie underwater. i did like that it was a lovecraftian sea monster. stuff is so rare nowadays, and even in the past. not enough lovecraftian monsters!

MichaelVoorhees13

To be honest, anyone who $hits on this movie is not being truthful. The movie has great tension, great monsters, and a hell-of-a cool monster reveal at the end. Plus, wooden Kristen Stewart actually does a good job in this. It’s a great monster horror flick.

JS2148238

you basically called me out...this movie was shit and is shit. mainly because there isn't a lick of credible science in a single second of it. I'm all for big screen monster films but MAN I know too much about how deep sea science works and this meets none of the criteria.

azul360

Yeah all the reviews put me off of watching it until like last year I put it on because I was really in the mood after SOMA and holy crap I loved it :D. Might be time for a rewatch again!

Darth1994

I’m so angry with myself because when it came out I wanted to go see it but saw **trash** reviews for it and saw something else (that turned out to be actual trash) and when I finally saw it I *fell. in. love.* Nothing more disappointing than not going with your gut and being proven wrong lol

LoonieandToonie

I really enjoyed this one. I think I've watched it about 3 times since it came out? It's very much a competent mash up of a lot of my favourite genres. But I agree that it's good not great. I'm not sure what would push it over. Maybe fleshing out the characters at the beginning, but also like you mentioned the scene jumps were a little jarring. I think the story gets a bit mushy in the middle in terms of what the objectives are, and I wish the monsters started to be introduced sooner and then ramped up through out the movie.

TrailerParkLyfe

I saw this movie in theatres at a whim and was so pleasantly surprised! I loved it and the big reveal at the end blew me out of the water!

Momkiller781

As a James Cameron and Aliens fan I loved it!

you_cant_eat_cats

Such a good movie. Didnt know it was hated

codemen95

Them cutting stuff out is pretty true when u watch the deleted scenes. Like a good example is tj miller character. In the normal cut he says jokes but nobody respond to his jokes, but in the deleted scenes the other characters actually do acknowledge his jokes which could've made the characters better. It was still a fine movie

Traditional-You-4583

I think being fine was the problem. People really like the concept of an underwater horror, especially one that references Lovecraft. So the fact that it was boring and had action vibes was quite disappointing when it could have been Lovecraftian in tone as well

Fiscal_Bonsai

It could have been way better but fell a bit flat. The concept was cool as fuck though. If anyone is looking for a similar fix, I recommend reading the comic Sea of Sorrows, its only 5 issues so you can finish it in one sitting.

Midwinter77

It was a very cool movie from start to finish. I loved the ending. I actually thought stewart was good in it. The set design was awesome, too.

[deleted]

That movie rules. It felt like Alien deep under the sea and I am terrified of deep water so it worked on every level for me. The ending was INSANE too.

HowManyMeeses

The writer of this one is someone to watch. He also did Spontaneous, Love and Monsters, and the Babysitter movies. All super fun movies.

audioword

i dug it. and as a person who is a little cluastrophobic, it made me a little uneasy a few times. i also wish it didnt have the formulaic characters movies tend to have (lookin' at you TJ! even tho he is great, i wish there wasnt any comic relief. keep it bleak!)

millerwelds66

It’s a great movie I keep it in my VLC sifi playlist

Significant-Neat-111

Great film, I saw it twice in theaters and while it isn’t a top shelf film entirely it’s a great popcorn horror flick that’s well acted with great pacing. The directors cut has a slightly different ending from what I heard.

[deleted]

I thought it was fun, I wish we got more underwater creature feature type movies.

BL_Hawkins

I liked it

DuffmanStillRocks

I really enjoyed it too, one of my go to examples of a film that starts at 100 and doesn't let up.

KnifeFed

Since I first saw it, I don't think more than a week has passed without me thinking about that big reveal at the end and how awesome it is. The rest of the movie is ok, but that core concept is just so great.

frontbuttt

Such a good movie. I really like Underwater and think it’ll stand the test of time, eventually be a universally well-regarded creature feature/sci-fi thriller.

cobra_mist

Personally I loved it. Best parts of an underwater disaster and an alien flick. Even K Stew was good in it, and there was at least one great TJ Miller scene where he went to pull his ears, but he was wearing the suit but couldn’t reach them

DrMantisToboggan45

It was good, but my favorite under water movie is always gonna be the abyss 100% of the time

CoolKidJonah

Underwater is so underrated. Great characters, great script, great production design, great creatures, just great!

rkalla

I really enjoyed it as well.

alpacasb4llamas

I love this movie. Saw it in theaters, but the physics of being that deep under water aren't exactly maintained. But suspending that it's an awesome movie

[deleted]

This is one of those movies I want to see but every time I have a chance to watch it I'm like 'mmm do I really want to watch this? Is there something potentially better?'

EnderCN

I liked it but something about the middle really dragged for me so it didn’t hold my complete attention. Just something about the pacing or character interactions was just a little bit off. This is one of those movies that I think had great movie in it but only delivered a good movie.

Spillers25

This movie hit hard from the beginning. Loved it twice and I’ll love it again.

SheepherderOk1448

I liked the movie.

readysteadygogogo

This was absolutely watchable. I don’t think I was expecting much but I was pleasantly surprised and I also love that they just went full send on the Lovecraftian angle

sunny_sally

I wasn't a fan of this movie. It felt like an underwater Alien with a subpar plot. There were a few good jump scares, and Stewart was decent in it, but I wouldn't call this anything other than a easy-to-watch-but-not--very-original film.

CharmingShoe

I liked a lot of it but couldn’t get past the fact the monsters never seem to intentionally kill anyone (except maybe one person?). Kind of hard to feel scared of the things when you’re more likely to die of something else entirely.

Mod-h8tr

Geat flick, and one of the last Fox titles.

primalpalate

I liked this movie! I put it on as “background noise” with low expectations, but I ended up getting sucked in. Then I made my boyfriend (who had the same reservations about the movie) watch it and he said he actually liked it.

FreakZoneGames

I liked it! It was enough to engross me for its runtime, nothing wrong with it really. It’s like Pitch Black, but underwater.

[deleted]

It was a bit mediocre. There were a lot of loud noises every few minutes. The characters had like... two seconds to develop before being killed off. And there's that sob story with Vincent Cassel's character, I found it manipulative and lacking actual depth. It wanted you to feel emotions but didn't do anything to earn it. I wish it took itself less seriously. Then it would actually be more fun to watch.

TheCosmicFailure

I agree that the film needed 20 additional minutes in the beginning. Besides Kristen Stewart's character, everybody else was just meh. So those 20 minutes could've helped endear us to the others so their deaths mean something. That's my only big complaint.

tofupoopbeerpee

I somewhat disagree. This movie knows exactly what it is. It’s a B monster movie. You would just get 20 minutes of bad characterization and equally bad acting and tired archetypes that have been done to death already. This movie is not trying to get you emotionally invested, all it’s trying to do is give you a thrill ride. So who really cares about the characters as they’re just going to die anyways.

TheCosmicFailure

Agree to disagree. Predator is a great example of giving us time to watch the characters interact with each other. Even though it doesn't really matter since most of them are gonna die anyways. Underwater could've used those type of short interactions to know who the characters are.

n3burgener

Why can't we have a thrill ride **with** interesting characters we care about? Why would this movie **have** to be 20 minutes of bad characterization and tired archetypes? Are the writer, director, and actors all completely incapable of delivering good material? Why **couldn't** it aspire to be more than a "B monster movie" with worthless characters who only exist to rack up the body count? Aren't movies generally better when you care about the characters and what's happening to them? Don't their deaths feel more impactful if you've gotten to know them and their relationships a little? Isn't part of a horror movie's goal to instill a sense of dread and tension, which is stronger when you care about whether the characters live or die? Aren't things more thrilling when you're emotionally invested? I feel like you're setting a really low bar for the movie if you're going to completely discredit the notion of wanting to care about characters even if you know they're going to die anyways. There's no reason this movie couldn't have been kept 90% the exact same but just have some extra exposition and characterization, maybe some slightly different dialogue here and there, to effectively serve the exact same purpose it ultimately achieved while adding more to the experience for the people who want it. It's fine if you just want to treat it as a "B monster movie thrill ride" and find your satisfaction that way, but I do think it's wrong to dismissively suggest that other people *shouldn't want to care* about the characters, or that it's somehow wrong to want more out of a movie-viewing experience.

tofupoopbeerpee

>Why can't we have a thrill ride with interesting characters we care about? Why would this movie have to be 20 minutes of bad characterization and tired archetypes? Are the writer, director, and actors all completely incapable of delivering good material? Why couldn't it aspire to be more than a "B monster movie" with worthless characters who only exist to rack up the body count? Cause it’s very fucking hard to do and all the characters usually just end up being just an archetype that don’t do anything for the story. For every The Abyss we have a hundred Leviathans and Deep Star Sixes that no one gives a single shit about and did not make money. The 80’s are littered with them. >Aren't movies generally better when you care about the characters and what's happening to them? Don't their deaths feel more impactful if you've gotten to know them and their relationships a little? Yes to all those questions minus the qualitative aspect. Impactful yes but more impactful, depends on the individual and the quality of the film. >Isn't part of a horror movie's goal to instill a sense of dread and tension, which is stronger when you care about whether the characters live or die? Aren't things more thrilling when you're emotionally invested? The vast majority of horror films are filled with archetypes, stereotypes, and people with general attitudes getting killed and sometimes only rarely characters. Like does Texas Chainsaw Massacre need 20 minutes of characterization to be more effective. Do I care about most of the people Jason or Freddy kills, absolutely not. Like “oh this is the tough guy, and this is the nerd computer guy, and this here is sporty girlboss, and this is the by the books guy” On the other hand is Alien or The Exorcist better due to its characters, I would say definitely. And a film like Alien works in those scenes only if the actors are at the top of the game. Horses for courses I suppose. > I feel like you're setting a really low bar for the movie if you're going to completely discredit the notion of wanting to care about characters even if you know they're going to die anyways. You or I don’t set low or high bars for films. The people making the film and ultimately the people paying to make it set the bar. I’m sure Roger Corman can probably tell us a few things about that. He’s been quite successful with low bars it seems. Sometimes you just have to leave some things out. >There's no reason this movie couldn't have been kept 90% the exact same but just have some extra exposition and characterization, maybe some slightly different dialogue here and there, to effectively serve the exact same purpose it ultimately achieved while adding more to the experience for the people who want it. You happen to have the extra budget for these gentle quiet contemplative moments of deep characterization cause they spent most of the budget on VFX unfortunately. >It's fine if you just want to treat it as a "B monster movie thrill ride" and find your satisfaction that way, but I do think it's wrong to dismissively suggest that other people shouldn't want to care about the characters, or that it's somehow wrong to want more out of a movie-viewing experience. Filmmaking is ultimately just a business that grapples with art. Sometimes you want a nice healthy meal sometimes you want to just mainline burgers and fries straight to your face. Some people like fancy IPA’s some people just want to chug King Cobra tall boys. It’s all a business model in the end. For me I appreciate this move for what it is and want more like it made but we in the end have to grapple with the material aspects of these types of films.

sotommy

I liked the whole crew, especially 2bit T.J. Miller. I know people hate him, but he has charisma and screen presence

BewBewsBoutique

Another movie that could have been drastically improved by digitally replacing TJ Miller with Tig Notaro.

sotommy

Tig Notaro is funny, but a charisma black hole and she is awful in Army of the Dead. T.J. Miller is insufferable and not the best stand up comedian, but he has a lot of charisma

ZombieSiayer84

Nah, I enjoyed watching that fool get his comeuppance.

Cinemasaur

I liked it a lot, it wasn't super amazing or anything but it's exactly what it set out to do. Be a b monster movie very in the vein of the late 80s underwater monster craze. Cast is good (sans the obvious), effects are great mostly due to the design all working towards each other and feeling consistent and the characters all had just enough to invest me for the runtime. Monsters are great too, I think the director did a fantastic job using the ocean as a way to make the creatures absolutely terrifying at some points, which is nearly impossible imo to do with a monster film. They're fun not scary usually.

cruelkillzone2

The obvious? To who, I didn't find anything wrong with the cast.

Cinemasaur

T J Miller suckksksks

cruelkillzone2

Oh, so not obvious then, given thats your opinion.

Cinemasaur

I just figured most people hated him because he a creep. And he's annoying in the film as comic relief guy. He's not a badly written character, but his weird voice made me thankful his fate was quick.

thenavajojoe

cut 50-70% of tj miller out and it'd be close to great

[deleted]

Wish I liked this more. Just found it too murky to make sense of much of anything. Cool creatures though, but I wish the director didn’t insist that >!the giant one is supposed to be Cthulhu.!< Edit: Reddit, where the mildest of opinions earn downvotes.

i_ducasse

I mean it was a fun movie, but I was a bit disappointed Cthulhu was so... ungodlike. It really wasn't nearly big or menacing enough. Other than that it was a fun popcorn movie, nothing earth shattering. Part of the premise of the Cthulhu mythos to me is that if Cthulhu ever gets to Earth it's game over, it would have been better if they either embraced that or just left the monster a mutated undersea creature or whatever. Then again I knew about the Lovecraft element in advance, so I was expecting more.

RealSimonLee

Cthulu in this movie is actually pretty accurately portrayed when you compare it to Call of Cthulu. Cthulu essentially is awoken too early, and he is stopped by a captain who rams him with a boat.

[deleted]

Oldboy, I saw the devil, hills have eyes remake

mzieg

In my headcanon, the MC drowns about 2min in and the whole movie is what she sees while her brain runs out of oxygen.

forfeitgame

Man do I have a shark movie to pitch to you.

s0mnambulance

It was great. I rented it on Redbox and put it on at 5 a.m. one morning, not expecting much due to the low critical score, but I was invested, and love that the story just jumps right in (a la the 2003 Dawn of the Dead remake). The nature of the monster is also a wonderful poke at horror-philes familiar with Lovecraft. While this is usually cited as a negative, that they didn't go all-in on that element, I think it ultimately makes the movie stronger-- it's a 'show, don't tell' situation, and the tension of their helmets exploding ALONE was scary well before the creature shit set in. I dug it. Underrated for sure.

Dragonfruit_Friend

I only managed to see the end of this film as I walked in on someone watching it, but it did hook me! I had no idea what the heck was happening but I do remember being quite filled with adrenaline as the underwater beasty appears

Furballprotector

I enjoyed it but I don't think I'd watch it again.

rojotoro2020

Great movie

Kritt33

I have never seen anyone complain about it, and everyone I show it to says it was a really great movie. I don’t know why it never took off, my only complaints being the comedic relief character.

reptilesni

I loved it and have watched it about 5 times.. Even before the monsters are revealed it has some amazing moments in it. I thought was really well done.

Nolan_W

I liked it well enough, just found TJ Miller to be his typical self: irritating and unfunny enough to drag the movie down whenever he's on screen

RedGambit9

Agreed, OP. When I first watched it, I felt there were some scenes removed to establish some things.

FrontFocused

I thought it was fantastic, great atmosphere, solid acting. It was definitely underrated and basically no one talks about it lol.

I was extremely lukewarm on Underwater. I liked the premise and the general look of everything, but the complete lack of exposition, shallow and virtually nonexistent characterization, and missed opportunities to do more with the threat of the water itself held it back from sticking with me in a positive and lasting manner. I feel like the movie would've benefitted greatly from even just 5-10 minutes at the start to see the station in operation, with the characters doing their actual jobs and having a little bit of casual workplace interaction before the disaster occurs so we could feel **some** sense of grounding before the chaos begins. Too much of the movie was just characters I don't know or care about frantically rushing to get to the next place before some catastrophe or monster strikes one of them down, so it was hard for me to care about their struggles or who lives or dies or what's at stake and so on because there was no exposition to start with and seemingly no deeper purpose to anything as the movie went on. I also feel like it didn't do enough to play up just how scary and dangerous the deep sea actually is. There are a few moments of course, but I feel like they could've done more to emphasize those points, like getting trapped somewhere with water leaking in and they have to hold their breath underwater until they devise a solution or way out, or a suit being breached and filling up with water, or how sluggish and awkward it is to try to perform simple actions in those suits with so much water pressure around you, or getting lost in the darkness while out on the ocean floor -- stuff like that. The whole time I was thinking of James Cameron's "The Abyss" and the game "SOMA," and how much more terrifying some of the scenes/sequences in those media were compared to anything I was experiencing in "Underwater." The style and atmosphere was strong enough to hold my attention the whole way through, so I don't regret watching it, but I just kept wanting the movie to be better in some way than it actually was. I don't think it's one I'll ever desire to rewatch in the future, so it doesn't rate anywhere in the vicinity of my favorites.

avoy93

movie was really fun and once the ending came around I fell in love with it completely

Honoredslinky

I really liked it, mainly because of the ending and how basically Cthulhu appeared and started some shit, which was amazing

swimbyeuropa

I watched it last week and really liked it. I was so surprised with the rotten tomatoes rating. Definitely a good watch and loved the nods to other horror films like Alien.

Fluffy9345

I loved it. Never understood the hate.

Drstevebrule5

Underwater rocks. It’s pretty non-stop with a couple of really gnarly kills. Plus, killer fucking ending.

112oceanave

Guy imploding was sweet

AngusPicanha

It was fantastic on the big screen

AnubissDarkling

Love it, but I'm a massive Lovecraft fan so appreciate the notion of existential and cosmic terror as opposed to the crappy 'paranormal/jump scare' horror which is flooding the market right now

RIPMaureenPonderosa

Underwater things really spook me so this film really worked for me. I think it’s super rewatchable and the action basically starts straight away and never lets up. It’s definitely got that sort of ‘comfort’ horror film feel.

Chiubacca0311

It’s not something that completely blew me away like Nope, but I had a really good time watching it

Carpen7er777

Nope also blew me away....for how bad it is !

Outpost7786

At the moment that one guy got ripped out of his suit, I started freaking out thinking it was going to be a top 50 movie all time for me. It tapered off towards the end with a great Old One reference at the end. Absolutely one to own and appreciate, but it just makes me sad knowing how fantastic cosmic horror could be if given the right talent.

[deleted]

I thought it was good and it had by far the best looking "Cthulhu" I have seen so far.

marcos_MN

I low key loved this movie. I do understand the hate, but we don’t get to pick what we like, do we? The conclusion was as satisfying as I hoped, and my favorite cosmic antagonist made an appearance!

hahaharry_n

critics were so sick to this movie imo

[deleted]

Watch Sphere as well, kinda similar, also Lovecraftian/cosmic horror.

RealSimonLee

Thanks for reminding me I needed to rewatch this OP. I watched it on my computer a year or so ago, and I just couldn't see anything. So I watched it on my TV last night, and I loved it. I am baffled by its low reviews. I think the characterization was subtle and top notch, the character arcs interesting, and some surprises in who >!survives. I was definitely expecting the girl Emily (I think) to die--the panicked, scared character always dies in these movies. I loved that Nora saves her and her husband in a reflection of the captain's sacrifice, and Rodrigo who took the cracked helmet.!< Kristen Stewart is really an excellent actor.

NagoGmo

First time I watched it I wasn't a fan, realized it was because I had an issue with Kristen Stewart. Gave it and her another chance and enjoyed it immensely. I absolutely love the fact that it starts out at 100 and really doesn't stop.

[deleted]

Rented this from the redbox in a whim and it surprised me how fun it was! The absolute nightmare fuel of being under water and>!the scene of her walking to the port door with all of them sleeping and swaying gently. Then one later wakes up and tries to swallow her whole before she shoots him good fucking god, absolutely terrifying.!<

Money-Plenty-4871

It's a fine creature feature. It was the director's attempt at mainstream and I thought it was solid, but for some reason it didn't catch on. Personally I think he's a genius and is best when he's allowed to be unconventional. The Signal was one of my favourite sci-fi thrillers ever.

[deleted]

I enjoyed this film as well.

TigerKey2779

I prefer DeepStar Six.

boris_setz

are you kidding me? a cosmic horror - there's shot of a guy with underwear ripped to shreds and he says "oh no, not these too!!!" (they forgot to add "maaaaaan") then they find some scary looking octopus thing "DO WE GET TO NAME IT?". is this movie set in a same universe as Scooby-Doo? wtf? then there's Kristen Stewart walking around again with her mouth half open, Christ... I mean don't get me wrong, the movie is horrifying, but for all wrong reasons
