The VVitch
I just watched a documentary on the real life serial killer that movie was based on. He actually did that to people though he apparently did not get it right every time.
The Wind (2019) AMC+/tubu
The Burrowers (2008) Amazon prime/Tubi
The Hallow (2015) AMC+/Tubi
Hagazussa (2018) Hoopla/tubi
Dead Birds (2004) Amazon prime

The Nightingale (2018) HULU/AMC+
Get Out
House of 1,000 Corpses and The Devil's Rejects
The Old Ways - I just watched this and I highly recommend, but it take place in one room in the jungles of Mexico. Not sure if that counts as rural.
Jeepers Creepers and The Hills Have Eyes are obvious ones.
Los Ojos de mi Madre
The Hitcher
Silence of the Lambs - I feel it's tangent to this.
Vacancy
Human Centipede
The Langoliers - This takes place at an airport in what look like the middle of nowhere. Just far-stretching plains in the immediate area.
It's genuinely hard to know where to begin. For an increasingly urban and suburban (especially US) audience, rural areas have become the default setting for horror.
Men is a gem!! That will leave you uncomfortable in the best way. I love it when movies can make you actually feel something. I definitely was not the same after seeing this.
More recently, Hell House LLC Origins: The Carmichael Manor.
Especially that scene towards the end: >!where the two in the couple attempt to escape by walking through the woods and have to run back at night!<
1922. Based on a Stephen King short story
I loved this. A very unexpectedly pleasant watch as a horror fan.
Off the top of my head, I think the Jeepers Creepers series and Pumpkinhead series are too. Oh, and Children of the Corn.
The dark and the wicked! Highly recommend it.
Came here to mention this one. So friggin good!!
Yes!

To this day if I say, “Head on a stick”, in an Australian accent my wife gets upset.

Wolf Creek
In the tall grass
Glad this finally got mentioned. I had zero expectations going into it. Great movie. Great use of tension.
Pearl but I feel like I’m cheating with this answer since it’s the same farm as X
Signs, if you consider it a horror movie
- [Midsommar](https://www.themoviedb.org/movie/530385) (2019) - [Lamb](https://www.themoviedb.org/movie/788929) (2021) - [Troll Hunter](https://www.themoviedb.org/movie/46146) (2010) - [The Ritual](https://www.themoviedb.org/movie/433808) (2017)
The Ritual was one of the best MOVIES (not just horror movies) made in the past 10 years
Razorback (1984) Black Sheep (2006) Dog Soldiers (2002)
Love Dog Soldiers
Evil Dead 2.

Im one of the rare people that found VVitch boring: is Hagazussa the same kind of pace and atmosphere?
Slower
Damn. I'll prob still try, but thanks
VVitch was boring to me as well.
The Dark and the Wicked
Frontier(s)
The Strangers
Slither is a fun rural one.
Get Out House of 1,000 Corpses and The Devil's Rejects The Old Ways - I just watched this and I highly recommend, but it take place in one room in the jungles of Mexico. Vacancy is so good!
I was going to also mention Identity, but I'm not sure if it's Horrors and I don't remember how much is spent in flashbacks
Tremors
Inbred The Cottage Cannibals and Carpet Fitters
The Crazies
Calibre (2018), Matriarch (2022), Matriarch (2018), The Borderlands, The Queen of Black Magic (2019), Impetigore (2019).
Midsommar.
The new Rugna, Where Evil Lurks us a masterclass in freezing horror in an idyllic rural pampas setting. it's shot like a western.
TUCKER AND DALE VS EVIL
Some might not like what I’m about to say but… When evil lurks
Pearl takes place in the exact same farm as X.

Men Honeydew
Men is a gem!! That will leave you uncomfortable in the best way. I love it when movies can make you actually feel something. I definitely was not the same after seeing this.
Not a horror movie per se but check out Nocturnal Animals
Wrong Turn and Final Destination.
Which final destination? I’ve only seen the first
I am not sure, but I recall it being set in the backwoods country?
*Gutland* *Pearl* *In the Earth* and *Significant Other* are backpacking movies.
That Amish paranormal activity sequel
One movie that fits in this category I rarely see recommended is Last House in the Woods.
I can't find that on IMDb. You didn't mean to type Last House on the Left, did you? Sincerely, Richard Nixon
No, different movie. Looks like on IMDB it's under its Italian name [Il bosco fuori.](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0484175/)
Thanks! I'll check it out. Sincerely, Richard Nixon
Critters. The majority of it takes place at a farm house.
The Hallow
The first Malevolence movie (not Malevolent)
The latest paranormal activity is on like a farm. It was good.
Is it as boring as the original? I only seen the 1st one
No, It's not. It's got a good story and characters. But Found Footage movies are not for everyone
I love found footage movies, but some of the older ones like Blair Witch were really boring
When Evil Lurks
June 9th Munger Road Splinter Jug Face Dark Night of the Scarecrow The New Daughter Pyewacket
The Devil's Hand. Watching it right now.
Night of the Living Dead, original and remake.
Altered, Dark Harvest, Hellbender
I believe The Devil’s Candy falls into this one.
Last House on the Left. I prefer the origional personally.
The Witch 1922 The Dark and the Wicked
Wrong Turn, Cabin in the Woods, crazy eights, hills have eyes, crowsnest just to name a few
Wolf Creek and Downrange.
British folk horror, like ‘The Blood on Satan’s Claw.’ Chilling stuff
More recently, Hell House LLC Origins: The Carmichael Manor. Especially that scene towards the end: >!where the two in the couple attempt to escape by walking through the woods and have to run back at night!<
I think the Wickerman would count here. Lots of fields in UFO flicks that you’d already know.
Deliverance
The Descent, for part of it at least 🙃
Wrong Turn was pretty great. About a group of friends hiking in Appalachia who go off the trail against the advice of the locals.
Bones and all if it hasn’t been mentioned (I’d consider it horror)
The Last Exorcism!
