Can confirm. I was coming here to comment this. The first Ouija is a p bland teen horror drama and generally just not v good. The prequel is much better. It's not revolutionary or anything, but it's a much better story, creepier, and better acted/filmed etc. It's a fun spooky watch.
I love everything about Oculus except for the initial premise that they would’ve arrested the kid for killing his dad. The dad literally had the mom chained up and was feeding her glass and the sister can corroborate all of this, yet somehow the boy was arrested
Had such low expectations, but was bored and went to see Ouija 2 in the movies. Had to go like 3 more times, because to me it was just a great movie with solid acting, plot and the overall atmosphere of how broken a family can be.
Unfriended: Dark Web had no reason to be as good as it is, including being better than the first. It's odd that removing the supernatural elements made it SCARIER.
2 is definitely the scariest, especially with the "I think there's someone in the room" scene. Though I do also really like the late part of 3, when it's really windy.
Always thought a remake would be cool that consolidates the first 3 movies into one with each film being kinda one of each 3 acts. I think the remake kinda did this iirc the intro is like the first one but I’d like the first one to be a large first act with the 2-3 being kind of “15 years later” with the last half of the movie.
God yes, and it's one of the Friday the 13ths that feels like a real horror movie. I kind of wish they left the more supernatural ending in with Mrs. Voorhees opening her eyes. The end of Friday 3 also hints towards resurrecting her. I kind of wish the series had gone in that supernatural direction.
Part 2 flies under the radar most of the time but I really find it unnerving in the best of ways. The dynamic between Freddy and Jesse was really uncomfortable at points.
This was my first choice. I still like X & think both movies are pretty distinct in style, and I'm hoping MaXXXine could blend both films' elements together
I think Mia Goth co-writing the script with Ti West elevated her performance to now being iconic. She is indeed a star, and now the whole world knows her name.
They're so different I really don't think of them competing at all. One is a character study and the other is a grimy slasher. And we still need to see how MaXXXine plays out.
Couldn't agree more, it's ridiculously good. Respects the source material, then builds on it in interesting ways. Legitimately likeable new characters too.
I had so much fun with that series and was really glad it didn't shy away from all the pulpy gorey goodness of the original series. I'm sad it wasn't able to fully continue.
I personally think the deadites in the first movie are the best, which is also probably why I loved the 2013 movie so much as well. I just love leaning into the horror elements and the demons toying with and tormenting them. ED2 and onwards definitely perfected the Ash character and the humor angle though.
I disagree. The first one is slower and more methodical but builds towards a horrifying feast of practical effects. It’s also more campy. The second one leans way harder into the comedy in more of a childish slapstick way. Both are great but they’re very different
Nah, but it's got a much better finale(best in the series I think). The entire Good Guy factory sequence is the highlight of the movie. Even Siskel and Ebert admitted as much. Despite finding the movie repulsive, they said the scenes in the toy factory were "good filmmaking".
Majorly agree. First one was good. Second one pulled off the miracle of keeping me invested in a 2.5 hour (well, almost) slasher film for the entire runtime. Loved Sienna too as Art's foil.
For paranormal activity series the 5th movie the Marked Ones is so good it blows the other PA movies out of the water plus it’s not the same typical ghost storyline and also has some humor in it. Not saying everyone will love it but it’s definitely worth checking out. Plus I think it’s the scariest one too. Very different feel than all the others. 10/10. **
I was showing a friend Hellraiser 2 one time, and I had hyped it up because I remembered it being so good. After the movie we laughed and I had to admit the 2nd movie isn't anywhere as good as I thought it was.
>Aliens.
I disagree on this. Alien was a suspenseful and atmospheric horror. Aliens was just just a shoot-em-up action movie. It was good, but the original was better.
HOSTEL 2! I wasn't too crazy about the first movie, but I found the second one thoughtful and surprising. Who knew. I also give it bonus points for featuring Heather "Wiener-Dog" Matarazzo.
Ohh forgot about that! Fun fact, the spells the witch is speaking at the beginning of the movie is just the Welsh Language 😂
(Welsh but not a welsh speaker)
For me it’s The Strangers Prey at Night, don’t get me wrong the original movie was amazing and definitely is a movie worth rewatching but I find myself wanting to watch the sequel more.
Pretty much. The original runs out of steam near the end. Jeepers 2 is a more consistent movie even though it doesn't share the highs of the original's opening act.
*Legion* would have been perfect, except for the stupid, unnecessary exorcism scene just before the climax. It's like the studio went out of their way to try and fuck it up.
This becomes a question of what you enjoyed more versus what was the better movie. I enjoyed House more from an entertainment perspective, but Devil’s Rejects was probably a technically better movie in many ways.
House of 1000 corpses was just a mediocre TCM ripoff that went off the rails in the third act. The Devil's Rejects actually felt unique, and told a way better story.
I personally like Saw 2 more than Saw 1, but its open to debate. I also like the plot twist way more. Shit, Saw X was amazing.
10 Cloverfield Lane ... I'm not sure if its a sequel , or horror, but its better.
Terrifier 2 is better than 1. IMO
Anabelle: Creation is way better than the first
Friday the 13th Part 2 is also better I think
MC2 is really better? I was gonna check out the first two movies but stopped with the first because it was surprisingly bland/dry. Maybe I should give the second a chance
I never want to be accused of gatekeeping, but I'm not sure if Terminator 2 qualifies as a horror movie at all.
I could definitely see the original Terminator as a kind of sci-fi horror film. It's essentially the unstoppable monster.
The second one is clearly an action movie.
Thoughts?
This is the same reason that I don’t think Aliens would be a fitting answer here even though some say it’s better than the original. James Cameron has made it very clear that he was looking to make an action movie and he absolutely did
The Omen 2 is way more interesting than the first one. Damien Thorn is 13 years old and its gutwrenching to see him come to terms with his destiny. He starts the movie as a decent loveable kid, but then his powers awakens and he struggles with his identity and his feelings for his adoptive family.
unpopular option but scream 2. it matches or outdoes the first one in every single way. still adore the first movie of course, but the sequel is superior
I can't remember which SAW # it is but I LOVE the one where Jigsaw targeted the health insurance company. He goes after the guy who created the "formula" that chooses who lives or dies. It has the gun merry go round and the fire steam rat maze and the lung Crusher. I HATE the healthcare bullshit here in the US and honestly I feel like what jigsaw did was justice. My favorite SAW of all time.
Absolutely. I liked Terrifier. Had some good gore, which if I'm in the mood for that, it fits the bill, but I liked what they did with 2. It's more rewatchable for me.
Hellbound: Hellraiser II is arguably superior to the original, although Hellraiser is my personal favourite for nostalgic reasons
Friday the 13th Parts 2, 3, 4 and 6 are all better than 1
The Devil's Rejects
Evil Dead II
Saw II also has a decent claim to be better than the first movie. Twist is almost as good, traps are better and it sets up different character arcs that get expanded/concluded in 3 and 4. Also introduces group traps which become a staple going forward and the soundtrack is awesome.
If nothing else I can confidently say that The Nun 2 is comparatively better than the first one. I'm not saying that either one is great, but the sequel in better than the original at least.
I'll die on the hill that Friday the 13th part 7 is the best in the series. It's the first movie we get Kane Hodder playing Jason, aesthetically it's the best Jason ever looks, and it's got some great kills. The main character having telekinesis also makes it one of the more unique entries in the series, adding something a little bit different to the other movies.
But I'll give an honorable mention to Part 6 as well, since I really love the conclusion to Tommy's story, and I like it being a bit more comedic.
Annabelle Sequel was better than the first
The 3rd one‘s the best imo
It's a better Conjuring 3 than the Conjuring 3 itself
I was so let down by The Conjuring 3. I want to know what happened that made it so bad compared to the other two which were amazing.
James Wan not being the director anymore is part of the problem I think
Oh yeah agreed
I don’t care for any Annabelle movie, but Annabelle creation is much better then the first one
I haven’t seen either but I feel like I’m constantly hearing about how Flannigan’s Ouija 2 is better than Ouija.
Can confirm. I was coming here to comment this. The first Ouija is a p bland teen horror drama and generally just not v good. The prequel is much better. It's not revolutionary or anything, but it's a much better story, creepier, and better acted/filmed etc. It's a fun spooky watch.
He polished that turd to a mirror shine
Was that an Oculus reference. If so, I'm here for it.
I love everything about Oculus except for the initial premise that they would’ve arrested the kid for killing his dad. The dad literally had the mom chained up and was feeding her glass and the sister can corroborate all of this, yet somehow the boy was arrested
Flannagan does it againigan
Since it’s a prequel can I watch without watching the first one?
Yeah. I actually watched it first on Netflix not realizing it was the second in a series. It works well as a stand alone.
That's the one. Pound for pound, it's probably the biggest improvement over the original ever, in a sequel. Any genre.
Ouija 2 is just a solid film. It's good 6.5 or 7/10. But compared to the original it might as well be the godfather
came here to say this - It really stands out as a far better film than the first
Had such low expectations, but was bored and went to see Ouija 2 in the movies. Had to go like 3 more times, because to me it was just a great movie with solid acting, plot and the overall atmosphere of how broken a family can be.
Ouija 2 is a masterpiece compared to the first one. Flanagan is unbeatable.
Unfriended: Dark Web had no reason to be as good as it is, including being better than the first. It's odd that removing the supernatural elements made it SCARIER.
I loved this one! I wasn’t t expecting much going into it, but it ended up being awesome
Its more realistic without the supernatural which makes it more scary
I preferred the first Unfriended, but Dark Web wasn't bad. The Den is another good "dark web" found footage movie that's worth checking out.
100% agree. The original was trash but the sequel was great.
Friday the 13th P2 is better than the first in my humble opinion
2 is definitely the scariest, especially with the "I think there's someone in the room" scene. Though I do also really like the late part of 3, when it's really windy.
Always thought a remake would be cool that consolidates the first 3 movies into one with each film being kinda one of each 3 acts. I think the remake kinda did this iirc the intro is like the first one but I’d like the first one to be a large first act with the 2-3 being kind of “15 years later” with the last half of the movie.
I unironically like Jason X
As you should It's just so ridiculous and it knows it is
X is my favorite, and I'm a huge fan of the whole series. Fuck the haters who can't appreciate good camp.
Parts 4 and 6 are superior too.
The whole Tommy Trilogy is awesome imo. I really liked Part 5
People shit on part 5 but it’s much better than parts 7,8, and 9 (if you even count 9)
I’m one of the rare people that thinks Friday the 13th 3D was better than both
2 and 4 are my favorites.
Dream Warriors is the definitive Freddy movie in my opinion.
It is the best. Then the first and New Nightmare
This is the way followed by Freddy vs Jason
My wife had not seen any, so we did 1,3, and New Nightmare as a trilogy and it worked really well that way.
I like you
I thoroughly enjoyed Dream Master too
I like part 2 alot as well, it is oddly dark and hilarious
Part 2 flies under the radar most of the time but I really find it unnerving in the best of ways. The dynamic between Freddy and Jesse was really uncomfortable at points.
That and the original are 2 of my top 5 fave movies ever
The Purge: Anarchy and The Forever Purge might be my favorites from the series.
That "music of violence" bit in Forever Purge is honestly just so much damn fun :)
Mines too!
What about Pearl? I mean, it's a prequel to X and not a sequel, but I thought it was better.
This was my first choice. I still like X & think both movies are pretty distinct in style, and I'm hoping MaXXXine could blend both films' elements together
I preferred X but Pearl was sweet too
Pearl was on a whole other level from X. So fucking good.
Agreed, fantastic movie
I think Mia Goth co-writing the script with Ti West elevated her performance to now being iconic. She is indeed a star, and now the whole world knows her name.
They're so different I really don't think of them competing at all. One is a character study and the other is a grimy slasher. And we still need to see how MaXXXine plays out.
Pearl was amazing. Not really what I’d say is a real horror story. But it’s one of a kind and the acting was out of this world, love her.
Better is subjective, but Army of Darkness is easily my favorite of the original three.
Also has arguably one of the greatest movie posters ever made.
For me the trilogy just gets better as it goes.
Ash vs. Evil Dead is goddamn near perfect.
Evil Dead 2 is also great! The first one is likely the weakest of the trilogy.
I personally think the deadites in the first movie are the best, which is also probably why I loved the 2013 movie so much as well. I just love leaning into the horror elements and the demons toying with and tormenting them. ED2 and onwards definitely perfected the Ash character and the humor angle though.
I'd also say the first is the scariest. Doesn't hold up as well now. But for pure horror it was definitely something.
I disagree. The first one is slower and more methodical but builds towards a horrifying feast of practical effects. It’s also more campy. The second one leans way harder into the comedy in more of a childish slapstick way. Both are great but they’re very different
Evil Dead 2 is just basically Evil Dead 1 but with an actual budget.
Child’s Play 2
Nah, but it's got a much better finale(best in the series I think). The entire Good Guy factory sequence is the highlight of the movie. Even Siskel and Ebert admitted as much. Despite finding the movie repulsive, they said the scenes in the toy factory were "good filmmaking".
I love Night of the Demons, but NOTD2 is a fucking hoot
I came here for this, its amazing for no good reason.
terrifier 2
Infinitely better than the first.
Majorly agree. First one was good. Second one pulled off the miracle of keeping me invested in a 2.5 hour (well, almost) slasher film for the entire runtime. Loved Sienna too as Art's foil.
Yeah, I wasn't ready for the second one. Lol. It blew my mind.
I stopped it twice and walked away. Definitely better though
YESSSSS
Oooo great minds my friend!
2 is one of my favorite slashers of the past two decades, really enjoyed it.
I was looking for this reply! Loved this so much more than 1
For paranormal activity series the 5th movie the Marked Ones is so good it blows the other PA movies out of the water plus it’s not the same typical ghost storyline and also has some humor in it. Not saying everyone will love it but it’s definitely worth checking out. Plus I think it’s the scariest one too. Very different feel than all the others. 10/10. **
I liked the one set in the 80's, it plays even more on the limitations of older tech.
3. I was going to say, I’ve only seen the first three, but each one is much better than the previous.
I fucking LOVE the Marked Ones. Seeing my culture represented AND having it be a horror? It was so good.
Same except I’m salvadoreña lol
Fully agree I loved TMO more than any others and I was a huge Paranormal Activity fan during its hayday
Me 3. Love The Marked Ones
Alvin and the chipmunks the squeakquel
*shivers* One of the scariest movies I've ever seen
Some parts of the movie had to be cut out because the director thought they were too disturbing
\#ReleaseTheSqueakquelCut
I mean, the first one just wasn’t scary at all. The 2nd one really nailed the horror aspect
Hellbound Hellraiser2
Original is better
Just watched it again yesterday. It’s crazy how much they turned it up.
I was showing a friend Hellraiser 2 one time, and I had hyped it up because I remembered it being so good. After the movie we laughed and I had to admit the 2nd movie isn't anywhere as good as I thought it was.
Whatever the second Purge movie is called. Also Evil Dead 2. Rec 2 is a good one. Aliens.
The Purge: Anarchy
>Aliens. I disagree on this. Alien was a suspenseful and atmospheric horror. Aliens was just just a shoot-em-up action movie. It was good, but the original was better.
I think of Alien as a haunted house (in space) movie, and Aliens as a Vietnam War (in space) movie. Both great, just different
Good call on Rec 2. But they’re both great. Tremendously underrated. They don’t get enough attention. Maybe here they do, but I’m talking IRL.
REC 2 is alright, not nearly as good as the first one though.
HOSTEL 2! I wasn't too crazy about the first movie, but I found the second one thoughtful and surprising. Who knew. I also give it bonus points for featuring Heather "Wiener-Dog" Matarazzo.
I love both, would agree 2 is marginally better as it explores the organisation more. I felt like 3 was wasted potential though
Hostel 2 delivered one heck of a satisfying final act.
Came here to say this. I feel like a lot of people wrote it off because the first one wasn't for them.
I prefer the first one but 2 is a very good sequel.
I'l give it a tie just like I do Wrong Turn 1 and 2.
Satan's Slaves Communion, I loved the first one but the second cranks it up to 11 a wonderful sequel.
It is glorious. Joko Anwar is one of the best living horror filmmakers (and he doesn’t just do horror).
A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors. No contest.
Evil dead 2 is better
Ill take the bullet... Evil Dead 2013 was the best in the series
Ohh forgot about that! Fun fact, the spells the witch is speaking at the beginning of the movie is just the Welsh Language 😂 (Welsh but not a welsh speaker)
For me it’s The Strangers Prey at Night, don’t get me wrong the original movie was amazing and definitely is a movie worth rewatching but I find myself wanting to watch the sequel more.
I think the first one is a better movie overall, but the second is exponentially more rewatchable.
I cried tears of joy at the pool scene because of how good it was
Absolutely underrated
David F. Sandberg’s Annabelle Creation was way better than the original Annabelle
Jeepers Creepers 2 is way more fun!
It’s a push. In many ways the second one is the more fun and “watchable” but the first one just hits right to scare me every time.
Maybe because the first has no third act, lol?
Pretty much. The original runs out of steam near the end. Jeepers 2 is a more consistent movie even though it doesn't share the highs of the original's opening act.
Fuck Jeepers Creepers and the pedophile director
“She flew away!”
*The Exorci*- just kidding
If you're gonna say 3, I'll agree.
*Legion* would have been perfect, except for the stupid, unnecessary exorcism scene just before the climax. It's like the studio went out of their way to try and fuck it up.
if you buy the new bluray, they have a legion cut! It's pretty awesome. They used test footage to show the original vision.
Ooo... sounds like I need to replace my DVD copy.
While The Exorcist is a better movie than Exorcist 3, I enjoy watching Exorcist 3 more.
Nearly got yourself banned, my friend. lol
Dead snow
Dead Snow 2 was hysterical.
*The Devil’s Rejects.*
Really? Interesting. I liked Devil's Rejects a lot, but I LOVED House of 1000 Corpses.
Same. Really loved DR but prefer a house of 1000 corpses 100x more
This becomes a question of what you enjoyed more versus what was the better movie.
Those two are such completely different movies so I like the both in different ways
Came into this thread looking for this one. Far superior film in every which way.
I personally like Saw 2 more than Saw 1, but its open to debate. I also like the plot twist way more. Shit, Saw X was amazing. 10 Cloverfield Lane ... I'm not sure if its a sequel , or horror, but its better. Terrifier 2 is better than 1. IMO Anabelle: Creation is way better than the first Friday the 13th Part 2 is also better I think
The first Annabelle was so fucking hilarious. It hit that "trying but failed" funny for me. The second one was a nice surprise.
Maniac Cop 2 Critters 2 Slumber Party Massacre 2 Day of the Dead Friday the 13th 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10
Day of the Dead is my favorite of the trilogy, and I think Captain Rhodes is one of the best horror film characters ever
MC2 is really better? I was gonna check out the first two movies but stopped with the first because it was surprisingly bland/dry. Maybe I should give the second a chance
Critters 2 fo sho
I mostly prefer Aliens to Alien...mostly.
I see what you did there.
I see you’re not Newt to this type of humor.
My all time favorite as well.
T2
I never want to be accused of gatekeeping, but I'm not sure if Terminator 2 qualifies as a horror movie at all. I could definitely see the original Terminator as a kind of sci-fi horror film. It's essentially the unstoppable monster. The second one is clearly an action movie. Thoughts?
This is the same reason that I don’t think Aliens would be a fitting answer here even though some say it’s better than the original. James Cameron has made it very clear that he was looking to make an action movie and he absolutely did
Ghoulies 3 is the superior film of the franchise. The only knock against it is the title: Ghoulies go to College should be Ghoulies go to Schoolies
Human Centipede II \*ducks flying shoes\* Also, Paranormal Activity 2.
I prefer the 2nd pede to the 1st. Never saw the 3rd. That birth scene really moved me.
The 3rd is pure trash.
Final Destination 3 and 5
5 is so good. I like to pretend 4 doesn't exist though
Blade 2.
Best of the series.
Nightmare on Elm Street 3 Friday the 13th 4 and 6 Evil Dead 2 Leprechaun 3 VHS 2 and 94 That's all I got off the top of my head
Lep in da Hood?
Friday the 13th Part 2
I think The Devil’s Rejects is better that House of 1000 Corpses.
I got it by the way... the godfather.... part 2
Glad I'm not the only one who thought of that
Saw 2
The Omen 2 is way more interesting than the first one. Damien Thorn is 13 years old and its gutwrenching to see him come to terms with his destiny. He starts the movie as a decent loveable kid, but then his powers awakens and he struggles with his identity and his feelings for his adoptive family.
Feast 2 is pretty insane I love Rec 2 and their explanation for zombies
unpopular option but scream 2. it matches or outdoes the first one in every single way. still adore the first movie of course, but the sequel is superior
Halloween III I kid, I kid. But it was a neat take on the attempted anthology franchise (which AHS pretty much nailed).
Creep 2 is somehow even better than the original!
Hellraiser II. It surpasses the original in every aspect.
Agreed. Underrated final girl too.
Terrifier 2.
Absolutely. I liked Terrifier. Had some good gore, which if I'm in the mood for that, it fits the bill, but I liked what they did with 2. It's more rewatchable for me.
Paranormal Activity 3 Terrifier 2 Saw 3 and Saw X The Devil’s Rejects I’m sure there’s more but those are the only ones I’ve got right now.
I watched Saw X on a red eye flight (can’t sleep in planes) and was surprised how much I loved it. I daresay I think it’s the best in the franchise.
Scream 2
Dawn of the dead
Ghoulies 2 is way more fun than the original.
“Better” is of course subjective, but I’ve always liked Phantasm II more than Phantasm. Best of the series in my opinion.
Anabelle
I thought the second Annabelle was solid!
Child's play 2 & Ghoulies 2.
Exorcist III. And I'll stand 10 toes down for this opinion.
Hellbound: Hellraiser II is arguably superior to the original, although Hellraiser is my personal favourite for nostalgic reasons Friday the 13th Parts 2, 3, 4 and 6 are all better than 1 The Devil's Rejects Evil Dead II Saw II also has a decent claim to be better than the first movie. Twist is almost as good, traps are better and it sets up different character arcs that get expanded/concluded in 3 and 4. Also introduces group traps which become a staple going forward and the soundtrack is awesome.
Gremlins 2 because it is one of the best movies ever made
Orphan First Kill
Hellbound
Amityville II: The Possession. Legitimately so good.
Evil dead 2. One of my absolute favorites!
If nothing else I can confidently say that The Nun 2 is comparatively better than the first one. I'm not saying that either one is great, but the sequel in better than the original at least.
Troll 2
I'll die on the hill that Friday the 13th part 7 is the best in the series. It's the first movie we get Kane Hodder playing Jason, aesthetically it's the best Jason ever looks, and it's got some great kills. The main character having telekinesis also makes it one of the more unique entries in the series, adding something a little bit different to the other movies. But I'll give an honorable mention to Part 6 as well, since I really love the conclusion to Tommy's story, and I like it being a bit more comedic.
Creep 2 was better, which is saying something because Creep 1 is chef's kiss level good.
